Don Troiani's Civil War Soldiers

Rate this book
America’s most respected historical artist

In the world of historical painting, Don Troiani stands alone, universally acclaimed for the accuracy, drama, and sensitivity of his depictions of America’s past. His images, both stirring and informative, define the view Americans have of the epochal Civil War.
In this new collection of Troiani artworks, ten years in the making, Troiani teams his signature large format battle paintings with detailed paintings of both Union and Confederate soldiers along with over three hundred photographs of uniforms, equipment, and artifacts from the nation’s most respected museum and private collections to give a full picture of the life of the Civil War soldier. Civil War uniform and equipment experts Earl J. Coates and Michael McAfee have contributed accompanying text. Includes 50 paintings and over 300 photographs.

This fabulously illustrated book by, in my humble opinion, the nation's best military artist features an eclectic and informative sampling of Troiani's many American Civil War prints. This book is both a feast for the eyes as well as the mind since each print featured provides narrative about the soldier(s) or units it features. Additionally, Troiani's large personal collection of militaria is featured throughout the book. As further testament to not only his skill as an artist, but more importantly his character as a man; Troiani recently donated his entire collection to the Army's Center of Military History so generations of museum goers and Soldiers can continue enjoying these artifacts and their stories. Unfortunately, I understand the Army did not accept elements of his collection of Confederate origin which does not speak well for their dedication to presenting history in a holistic manner or observance of the traditional inclination of victors to take trophies (all be they delayed by 150 plus years). This is a beautifully done work of both literature and art which I highly recommend to every American old enough to read or enjoy the wonderful pictures (I know my young son certainly does).
