Surviving 23 is a collection of poetry. Raw, real, heart-wrenching, humorous poetry. The reader delves into the scattered mind of an eating disorder—body dysmorphia, purging, denial, and healing. The poems explore every facet of class, family dysfunction, fractured relationships, losing direction and finding it again. Surviving 23 is an uplifting portrayal of despair turned hope, anguish turned reconciliation. The reader will learn that to love oneself is perhaps the most daunting, frightening, imperative task life will demand.
I don't typically understand poetry, but as a classmate of Sarah's, I had to give this a go. I'm happy to report that I understood most of the poems in this book. Sarah's use of language creates vivid images. I can hear and see everything going on within the pages.
