This book made me feel overwhelmingly sad. Spoilers ahead It's about a zookeeper's boy who finds out that he can talk with animals if he wears animal ears and he gives the zoo animals false hope that there's a jungle right outside. The animals long to be free and be in their natural habitat and plan to leave the zoo. Then their dreams are crushed and their escape plan fails as the boy informs the authorities. It just highlights the cruelty of keeping the animals in cages and there were two baby elephants Maya and Miko who have not even seen the real world and they're seen asking the boy,
"What's outside the big gates?"
Those baby elephants when released to the wildlife after years of being a showpiece display for years won't know how to survive over there. The book ends with him talking with his pet rabbit , again in a cage with rabbit ears. No remorse over animals being in there just a disappointment that he won't be able to talk to those animals again as they feel he betrayed them. Or awareness that the animals are confined in undersized enclosures, suffering psychologically and feel lonely.
