Smith (1838-1915) was an American engineer, author and artist who built the foundation for the Statue of Liberty, wrote numerous famous stories many of which offer highly-praised portrayals of the Old South, and received awards for his paintings. His first popular novel appeared in 1891 and this work was first published in 1911.
