The Choice

Rate this book
Juliet Jameson finds herself in a difficult situation at her first high school party, trapped in a dark room with a girl named Piper. To Juliet’s dismay, she finds that being near Piper elicits more feelings, physically and emotionally, than any guy ever has. It is at this point that Juliet must make a decision. Should she give in to her hidden, innermost desires and kiss Piper, or should she be the good, little Christian her parents raised her to be? It is with this choice that Juliet’s story breaks off into two completely different, yet equally possible futures. One where Juliet, or “Jules,” falls madly in love with a girl she never thought she could get, though she loses her family and sometimes her pride in the process…and the other where Juliet reluctantly marries her childhood guy friend and is quickly pulled into the hell that is alcoholism and substance abuse. But, in the end, there can only be one choice.

I LOVED this book and read it completely in one day (which considering how many chapters there are, its an accomplishment). At first, I thought I might have liked it to go a little slower but I loved getting to see the most important parts of Jules and Juliet. The biggest thing I took from this book was how thankful I am for my parents and their reaction when I came out as bisexual - they were confused, yes, but still loving and supporting. I also saw how my life could have turned out had I not lived my life the way how I needed to. Following Jules on her path to find happiness and love was a journey I was honored to be a part of. Following Juliet fall apart, on the other hand, was a journey I wished I could protect her from.

I really enjoyed this book and read through it in one sitting. I definitely wanted to know what would happen next, and the author did a nice job of ending each storyline's chapter in a spot where I would want to know more.

However, all that aside... It felt a little preachy, almost. The two separate lives were almost two separate, if that makes sense. When she chose to be gay, her childhood sucked, but then her adulthood went so well and she had everything line up for her. Whereas in her "straight" life, it just seemed like everything fell further and further apart as time went on. I mean, it got BAD. Like, drugs being abused and stillbirths bad.

Now, I'm LGBT myself, so yeah, I agree, if you try to hide your true self, it will lead to miserable consequences and your life may fall apart. But unfortunately, life isn't just a bouquet of roses once you're out of out of high school if you come out of the closet. What I've found is that identity tends to be more of a push and pull phenomenon rather than all or nothing like this book betrayed it. Some days, you're really in tune with yourself and proud to be LGBT. Other days, you want to hid from the world and pretend to be anyone other than who you are. This creates more of a tide-like flow of good and bad moments, rather than mostly good or mostly bad and all dependent on whether you're out or not.

Overall, it felt like maybe the author had a strong idea of which way the story was supposed to go, and the story got pushed that way whether it liked it or not. It made me ultimately feel a little disconnected from Juliet/Jules - It felt like the sort of story your mom would tell you about her past. You know there's probably more juicy bits to it than she's letting on, but she wants to make sure you don't miss that moral, darn it.

Enjoyable read!

I enjoyed the way the book is written where you see what happens to the character depending on the choice she makes. A nice read. Enjoyed the book!

Awesome book

I honestly can't put in too many words how awesome this book was. It opens a person mind into visualizing how the choices we make can make us into the person we think we need to be and the person we should actually be. That's it I'm done the book was just awesome.
