Let's hug it out, people.

Sorry. I needed a moment. This book is so damn adorable, I can't even.

Step by Step is basically a modern-day fairy tale, except the "fairy godmother" is a wealthy bear named Guy. Once upon a time, when Guy was young and broke, a kind man took him in. Now, he wants to pay it forward.

Jamie is struggling to make ends meet. His parents have spent his college money on their ongoing, contentious divorce, and he's months behind on rent despite working three jobs. When Guy offers to help, Jamie is a little suspicious. It all sounds too good to be true.

But Guy is the real deal: a nice person who has no ulterior motives. Guy and Jamie get along famously. Guy teaches Jamie to cook, and Jamie brings joy and laughter to Guy's life.

There is a long slow burn, as Jamie comes to realize that he may not be so straight after all. On his 21st birthday, Jamie asks for a kiss. And that kiss just keeps on going.

I loved that the age gap (Guy is 38 to Jamie's 21) isn't a source of angst and anguish. Yes, Guy has twins who are Jamie's age, but Jamie is an adult. He knows what he wants, and Guy never pushes. There is nothing creepy or weird about their relationship. They rely on each other.

Guy's son is a disaster, and his ex is petty and jealous. But his daughter is wonderful, and she and Jamie become good friends.

The best news? There is almost no relationship angst, but the steam is SCORCHING and plentiful. I'm gonna say it again: K.C. Wells writes the hottest sex on the planet.

Jamie has no qualms about making love to Guy. He's not concerned with labels and knows he'd rather be with Guy than anyone else. The two just click, and the chemistry between them is explosive.

Step by Step is relationship driven and has a wonderful HEA. I got the idea that this may be the first in a series, and I REALLY hope I'm right.

I'm not normally a fan of an age difference but this really worked for me.

Jamie is nearly 21 and struggling to put himself through college. The college fund his parents had for him has been used for his parents long and messy divorce. He's just lost one of the three jobs he had and is behind with his rent when a kind of Knight in Shining Armour steps in.

Guy is 38 and has a very comfortable life.He offers Jamie a room in his home, wants to help with bills and tuition and genuinely wants Jamie to get the best out of life.
You might be forgiven for thinking this was just a bit unbelievable but somehow it wasn't and I think it's because Guy is a good man...I mean a really good man. There was no creepy ulterior motive about Guy's proposal. He had been in a similar situation when he was young and someone stepped up to help him and he wants to repay the favour.

Guy is upfront about his sexuality. He's gay but has two grown up children around Jamie's age from a relationship when he was young.Jamie is straight and hasn't had much time or inclination for sex.

There is no insta lust here. They become friends and develop a mutual respect for each other. But gradually things change and their relationship develops at just the right pace.I don't think this book it about being labelled as gay, straight or bi.....it's a story of two men who connect emotionally and then physically.I enjoyed their friendship just as much as their sexual relationship......which was smoking hot!!

Some brilliant supporting characters, especially Ryan and Cole.......I so want their stories. The Epilogue giving teasers about Cole was very intriguing,I'm hoping his story is next,if there is going to be one??

Talking of the Epilogue....I'm not normally bothered either way about one but this was just perfect.

A recommended read, even if you're not a fan of an age difference I think this one might convert you.

Wow! Holy moly!

"To think I might have missed out on what feels like what could be the best thing to ever happen to me."

Let me explain why I chose this excerpt from the book to share in my review. When I read the blurb for this book, I was excited. But there was a little hesitation. The main reason was that I didn't want a good book to feel like a rebound when I couldn't decide on a PNR book to continue my streak. So I really went into a slump to decide which book will suffer the journey of being read probably halfheartedly.

But I shouldn't have worried. It is K. C. Wells, after all! And when I got to this excerpt, the words that registered in my mind were these: "To think I might have missed out on this amazing masterpiece of amazing writing and editing and delicious, cuddly romance that I didn't even know I was looking for!"

The sweet, toe-curling journey from a too-good-to-be-true start to a dreamed-by-all-but-found-by-some swoon-worthy love story was such a rich experience for me. I went into this with a slow, measured pace, but I ended up barging through the HEA (which even set up a premise for a potential upcoming story).

Yes, this is a story with a significant age difference between the main characters, but it was handled with such care and beauty that my heart all but melted into a gooey puddle.

I loved Guy and Jamie. I loved Cole and Carla. I cheekily enjoyed and adored John and Ryan. (Can we please get a story for them?) From the first sentence to the end, this was a delicate yet fierce story about staying strong for your love and true to your character and having an open mind to life and the numerous experiences it brings to your door.

A lovely read. Highly recommended. One of my friends here wrote something like if you are wary of age-difference stories, this is a good place to start. I completely and wholeheartedly second that. If you want to test your feet in these delicate waters, feel free to start here.

When I read the blurb for Step By Step I was expecting a beautiful and warm story about a man helping a younger man who is down on his luck. Unfortunately, I was too freaked out by the situation – so many things happening that rubbed me the wrong way – and well, I had to take an early exit.

Because I have to explain what didn’t work for me, this opinion is most definitely spoiler-y. I apologize for that. But I stopped before half-way, so there will still a lot of things that might happen for other readers to go through.

Yep, this didn’t work for me. Sorry book…

2.5 stars I think it's time. I'm gonna hafta finally move K.C. Wells onto my not-for-me-authors bookshelf. I was on the fence about K.C. Wells but I just love me an age gap, let alone a GFY one! I couldn't resist the siren call. Unfortunately, neither of these characters felt real to me. They were both one-dimensional Disney perfect.

So here's the thing. I've read some other stories that start like this, except they're dark as fuck non-con kidnap/rape type stuff. They can be amazing because they change your preconceived perceptions of yourself and push your emotions to the limit. They can still have HEA endings, just different than we're used to thinking about. Maybe twisted HEA's, but HEA's nonetheless. However, trying to take an insane scenario that in the real world would only ever lead to rape and murder and making it Disney sweet... I'm having a little problem with that. I guess I'm too cynical but I just don't believe it. HE WENT INTO A STRANGE MAN'S BASEMENT!!!

Amy Lane's Sidecar is a more realistic middle ground. In that story, a good sameritan takes in a teenager after finding him nearly dying on the side of the road. They build a friendship over years before anything sexual develops. However in this story, Jamie and Guy are acting like an old married couple within a week of living together.

It's one thing if you want to pay for this guy to get an education etc, but it was never explained why he needed to live there. And if you're doing charity then you don't get to have stipulations. They don't need to have dinner together. They don't need to be friends. You can just send him a check. I know Guy wanted that connection but it just felt weird, and obviously so unrealistic.

But even ignoring all the questionable plot, the dialogue just killed me. And I've had this problem with Well's books before, so that's kinda on me. It's just so stilted. It reads like a play. Everything is overly formal conversations and people that are supposed to be lifelong friends talk like business associates. A lot of cheesy cliche lines like "oh he'll fit right in here!" and "you know me, can't resist a good time!" Just, no one talks like this! Let a lone a 20 year old.

And speaking of the 20 year old. The blurb tells of a struggling youth, and we got that. For all of 1 chapter. Then it's all hunky dory. We never see that side of Jamie again and he was just so flat. Minus a couple conversations with his parents he has one friend and it's all just blown over. We never even see his parents find out about their relationship, let alone that he's gay! That's kinda a big deal!

Instead it was all focused on Guy's one-dimensional family. Obviously there has to be an evil villainous bitch of an ex-wife. Never mind that they were once friends. And yes, Patrick was a dick. But 21 years old seems young for a father to totally wright-off his son, and honestly Guy didn't seem all that upset or bothered by his lack of relationship with Patrick. And that bothered the shit outta me.

So yeeeeah. Anyone who saw my stream of consciousness status update rants knew where this review was headed. A lot of people liked this book, and K.C. Wells's writing in general, so to those people I say, "go forth and be happy!" But to people who want a realistic and emotional journey of a young man struggling to find his way who develops slow burn feelings for his wealthy benefactor I say, "look elsewhere."

Jamie is twenty-year-old and in a college to become a lawyer but he needs money. He is about to kicked out of his little studio apartment. He can’t afford to pay his next semester’s tuition. He asked his father for money but he is on the verge of separating from his wife. So he can’t help Jamie. He works three jobs and now he must find another one. So when Guy offers to help him he has no choice to accept it but with a little suspicious. But Guy told him that when he was Jamie’s age he was in a mess financially too. He met someone who changed his life and now he wants to pay it forward. Oh, I forgot to tell you; Guy is thirty-eight-year-old and has twin who are Jamie’s age! And of course he is gay and Jamie is straight or he thinks he is.

Okay, at first I thought the age difference is something that maybe bother me but nope! I mean it was not so palpable for me. This story is a slow romance. They first became friend and in their friendship they try to know each other and then they develop their emotions for each other. the first half was slow but the second was well-paced. I confess, I’m not really good with slow stories but this one at this time was something that I really needed so I enjoyed it. The characters were perfect and I liked them (I mean most of them).

I thought this one was pretty good. A bit far fetched maybe. But it was sweet. Had a nice slow build the first half and some good steam the second half.

A fairly believable romance despite the age gap.. Low angst, which is always a plus.

Solid, recommended read!

Reviewed for Just Love.
ARC received in exchange for honest and fair review.

From the start, Step By Step was a super problematic read for me and I’ll explain why – step by step:

1. Jamie felt grateful that he “dodged that bullet” in regards to not being gay. This was when he still considered himself straight and the idea that he might be interested in men hadn’t yet occurred to him. Mostly because of his age and inexperience, I’ll happily give him a pass for not having any sexual self-awareness, but I still found that comment careless and insensitive, and it gave me pause. The author – for whatever reason – felt the need to correct me on Goodreads and explained that “dodging the bullet” in this case referred to “more argument/hassle from his parents if he’d been gay.” Feel free to interpret that how you choose; it didn’t change my opinion.

2. The Evil Ex-Wife theme is persistent throughout. I’m personally not a fan of this storyline especially when it doesn’t enhance or is necessary a story. I definitely did not think painting Miranda in a negative light – all throughout the book – was necessary to the story. Within hours of meeting Jamie, Guy was bashing his ex-wife to the point where Jamie was indignant that Guy had to pay child support for his own children. The Evil Ex theme pops up again when Guy blames Miranda repeatedly for turning Patrick, their 20-year-old “problematic” son against him. I was also taken aback at how much Guy didn’t care for his own son and would bad-mouth him in front of others and even allow other people to do the same. I’m not a parent, but it felt a bit more vitriolic than the usual parental frustration. Going back to the Evil Ex-Wife theme, I felt that Guy had plenty of other demons involving past lovers, that painting the mother of his children in a villainous light seemed highly unnecessary.

3. To be honest, from the blurb, I was not prepared for the kind of help that Guy proposed to Jamie. My mouth was hanging open in shock and disbelief the entire first three chapters of the book. His idea of paying it forward was really extreme, and made Jamie 100% dependent on him for anything and everything. Guy explained in great length the reasons for it, but I think it’s fair to say that there were much simpler ways to help a desperate young man, that would’ve still been really generous and meaningful. But what I really had difficulty with was Jamie accepting Guy’s proposition within hours of meeting the man. I will add here that I kept on reading to see if the creepiness factor subsided, and thankfully it did, somewhat. I felt that Guy addressed Jamie a little condescendingly on occasion (or maybe he just mothered him), but their friendship progressed smoothly, as did their growing attraction for each other.

4. Just when I had started to settle into the story and was getting interested in their developing relationship, I hit a complete and utter deal breaker at 61% and I marked the book as DNF. Despite Jamie’s friend Ryan being an out-and-proud bisexual and their discussions about sexual identity, this book contained some heavy elements of biphobia and bi-erasure. Most of it was contained within Guy’s narrative, in which he kept calling Jamie straight, even after Jamie made it clear he was attracted to Guy. And then there were the two “straight” men who had burned him in the past, when it was clear neither man had been straight. One was married to a woman, which makes him cheater and most likely a closeted bisexual, but not “straight.” But when Guy shared the story of his most recent ex, I realized how deep the bi-erasure and biphobia really ran:

“Derek was straight, but that wasn’t why everything got fucked up. It turned out he was a greedy little bastard who was only with me for all he could get.”

“In my experience, a lot of straight guys consider sex with a gay guy because they want to experiment, not because they’re romantically attracted to them. Maybe there are lots of gay guys more readily available for hookups. Maybe they’re not getting enough. Maybe it provides them with sexual release, but that’s as far as it goes. They still see themselves as hetero, and heaven forbid you should fall for one of them.”

“Strangely enough, finding him in my bed with two guys wasn’t the worst part.”

“I should have known better than to become so invested in a straight guy, even if I truly believed at the time that he was looking for something… romantic. I can see now the romance part was all on my end.”

These are just a few excerpts from the conversation Guy had with Jamie that finally did my head in. Between this hot take on “straight guys” and Guy calling everyone straight when they’re obviously bi or gay, I was done. Up to this point, I’d kept telling myself to keep on reading and maybe certain things will improve or be explained, but this proved too much for the likes of me to unpack.

4.5 stars from me. Yes, I was one of the beta-readers and no, I don’t just hand out 5 stars cos it’s KC…I give out 5 stars cos *I* think the story deserves it, and this one totally does!!

I hold my hands up and admit that I was a little wary of beta-reading this one simply because of the age difference. I have a son of my own around Jamie’s age, and it has to be said that I don’t read that many May/December stories anyway. There is a pretty big age gap between Jamie and Guy; however, the further we got into the story, the more I realised that it’s not about the age gap at all, it’s nothing to do with it in fact, it's about how much they loved each other....and don't we all deserve to have a little love in our lives??

 photo rainbowlovedogtags_zpsa7ab0876.jpg

Jamie….I loved, and to say his life was unfair and over-complicated would be a huge understatement. He’s working 3 jobs just to get himself through college for his law degree, and he wants to follow his idol, San Francisco DA Cole Daniels [and yes, dear Author, we definitely need to know what’s going on with him in a future story ;)], his parents have finally decided to stop fighting and get divorced, but they’re using up his college fund to pay the lawyers [oh, the irony], and because he’s had some emergencies, his own savings have run out and his very kindly landlord is throwing him out for non-payment of rent. Jamie’s ‘white knight’ or Good Samaritan if you will, Guy Bass, then enters the story, and chats to Jamie about his own situation when he was Jamie’s age. A complete stranger helped Guy then, and Guy wants to do the right thing and keep paying the good luck forward so to speak, by offering Jamie a place to stay and help with his monetary problems.

Some people would have said that Jamie was incredibly naïve to even contemplate accepting such help [**waves hands** me included], but he has a very old head on his young shoulders, and trusts the assurance he sees in Guy’s eyes. He learns that Guy is divorced, has twins around his own age, and is gay….and offered to help him cos he thought Jamie was too. Now, as far as this ‘paying the good luck forward’ scenario is concerned, it’s a wonderful concept in principle but is of course extremely reliant on everyone doing their bit....

I can honestly say that hairy bear Guy was an absolute godsend for Jamie, and there for him through thick and thin.…even when his own selfish brat of a son accused Jamie of being after his dad’s money. We discover that Guy is a wealthy, self-made man who donates to good causes, and whose two ‘as alike as chalk and cheese’ kids lacked for nothing when growing up. Carla is very accepting of her dad, and a few months away from getting married; Patrick, on the other hand, behaves like a spoilt brat thanks to the vitriol his mum has spewed in his ear since the divorce, and tbh, was a nasty piece of work [didn’t like him at all].

As far as the whole ‘am I straight, am I gay??’ conundrum Jamie was struggling with, well it’s all a question of attributing those pesky labels again, isn’t it?? He’s had little to no experience of dating simply because he was too busy with his studies….how would he have known whether men, women or a combination of the two were what he needed in his life?? He and Guy became good friends before they became lovers...and Jamie was the instigator of that; he wanted it whereas Guy wanted to give him space, for Jamie to make any decision without added pressure.

I’m not giving any more away folks….enjoy this lovely, heart-warming read for yourselves. Ryan [Jamie’s bestie] I also loved, and definitely want a HEA for him…whether with a girl, boy or both ;), Jamie’s mum...no comment, Derek…ditto, Miranda [the twin's mum]...well, sorry but I can't forgive her, and our lovely Patrick?? Ugh...just ugh!! Great read KC.

As much as I like this author, I had a tough time to start this one.
Colour me cynical but after 5 minutes of meeting a penniless student, a man offers to pay for his tuition, his debts and to be his roommate in a nice house for no other reason than to do a good deed and the student agrees right away….mmm…

Keeping my scepticism at arm length and not dwelling on how these 2 guys met, I went through it : the rest of the story is sweet, angst-free and very steamy, with 2 lovable MCs (with age-gap, yeah !!).

After spending a few hours contemplating how I ultimately felt about this story, I've decided I liked it more than I didn't like it.

Initially, the premise didn't work for me. Like, at all. We're talking about some down on his luck college kid (Jamie) who gets approached by a complete stranger (Guy), who offers to house him and financially support him for the next few years, for no other reason than out of the goodness of his heart. Really?

Call me cynical but I just didn't buy Guy's motivations, at least initially. He seemed too nice to begin with, unrealistically so. When he was pimping his suspicious proposition out to Jamie a little voice in my head was screaming...

But, alas, it all turned out okay. Spoiler alert: Guy did not turn out to be the Mayor of creepy-ville as my distrustful self originally thought, and I daresay he even won me over... to a point... eventually.

What did work for me was Jamie and Guy's out of this world chemistry, which if I'm being honest, kind of snuck up on me halfway through the book. It was a nice slow burn to start with - because Jamie is presumably straight when the story begins - but as the two men developed a sweet companionship, so too did they begin to look at each other with the potential for more on their minds.

Once they started exploring their romantic relationship I was all in. I especially appreciated that all the drama in this story actually existed outside of their relationship - it was a refreshing change of pace to all my reading experiences of late.

I also liked many of the secondary characters populating the pages of this book. I'm even hoping that a few of them get their own stories.

Maybe if I wish for it hard enough it will come true!

Sweet, sweet ... did I mention sweet ? Yup I loved it ❤ it was almost a modern version of Pretty Woman - well without the prostitution! This was a journey of self discovery that was supported by great friends... a beautiful case of paying it forward and something warm to enjoy. Books like this give me hope that there really are kind & selfless people out there. Really enjoyed this

ETA 10/18/2017 for Audiobook - 4 stars:

This is probably my favorite K.C. Wells story, and new to me narrator, Conner Goff, did a good job with the narration, without doing anything to particularly stand out or detract from the story itself.

Goff uses distinctive character voices, has good timing and pacing, and made this an enjoyable listen.

For the sticklers: Some of the POV changes were not readily apparent in the audio, and some words were pronounced a bit oddly for me, but most struck me as an alternate way to say the word rather than a mispronunciation.

I had such a great time reading this!

This is such a sweet, low angst, lovely little story that starts off with almost a fairytale-like premise, but just keeps evolving into a gorgeous, loving romance.

Guy once had a benefactor who got him through some really tough times, and when he hears Jamie's plight he decides to "pay it forward" and do the same for Jamie. The same means paying off all his debt, paying for Jamie's university education (through law school), giving him a place to live and a car to drive. Sound too good to be true? It does to Jamie too, but he's literally been evicted from his apartment, and has no money to pay for food, let alone a new place to live. Even though it begins with a healthy dose of skepticism, Jamie quickly realizes Guy is not out for anything other than to help him.

There was a lot I loved about this story, from the dual POV of both Jamie and Guy, to seeing Jamie come to terms with his growing attraction to Guy, to the fact the age gap wasn't really (for them) a factor. And the sex is scorching hot! Like, mega, melt-your-panties HOT.

Side note: I know some people don't really like a May/December type romance, but their ages really aren't a big deal here. They are two adults who gravitate to one another and complete each other so well. So, if you're thinking of skipping because of the age thing - I'd highly recommend you rethink that.

I really liked that not everything was sunshine and roses (Guy has some real pieces of work for a son, ex-wife, and ex-boyfriend), but it was handled so it enhanced the story rather than took anything away. How refreshing!

I did wish I'd gotten a better idea of what Guy was doing in the library to begin with, and that Jamie's "coming out" had been on page, but the story isn't really affected by either thing not being shown.

In the end, I just had a great time reading this, will absolutely put it on my favorites shelf, and I know I'll be back to read it again soon.

P.S.: *fingers crossed* I hope this comes out on audio with a terrific narrator!

P.P.S.: I really hope we get further stories featuring John, Ryan, and Cole.

20-year-old Jamie is a struggling college student with three jobs, no money, facing eviction and has plans to become a brilliant lawyer. The day he meets 38-yr-old hot bear Guy Bass in the library is truly his lucky day because Guy is a wealthy philanthropist who offers to "pay it forward" by paying for Jamie's law school. "I’d like to help you out, the way Stephen helped me. Whatever you need, Jamie: a place to live, financial aid so you can concentrate on your studies instead of burning the candle at both ends, a mentor, I suppose.”

There's a lot to like about this story. We get both Jamie and Guy's POV and the opportunity to watch their relationship slowly develop. Jamie is straight, and had "long since decided [sex] wasn’t all it was cracked up to be" so he's truly perplexed that overhearing Guy and a hookup having hot headboard-banging sex is the hottest thing he's ever heard. Jamie slowly comes to terms with his sexuality and Guy is more than willing to abide by Jamie's pace. There are no angsty misunderstandings - they communicate about anything and everything, and the age difference really isn't a factor. And when they finally have sex, oh, hell it's hot and definitely worth the wait.

But, on the other hand, there are several things about this book that gave me pause.

I give Step by Step 3.5 stars and am placing it on my "Everyone Else LOVED It" shelf!

Perhaps as a warning, please leave your cynical self at the door before venturing into this story. I assure you it will make things a lot easier.

Down on his luck Jamie desperately needs some help, and somehow it finds him in the form of Guy, a wealthy businessman taking the opportunity to pay it forward. Guy offers his home, his money, and his cooking skills to Jamie so he doesn’t have to work 3 jobs to pay for school and can fully concentrate on studying and preparing to become a lawyer. It really is too good to be true, but regardless, Guy and Jamie gradually become great friends and get along fabulously and seamlessly.Though Jamie sees himself as straight, his little sexual experience and his mounting exposure to all things Guy, slowly opens his eyes to his attraction. Curiosity is definitely banging on the door here.

Now this premise isn’t so bad in and of itself, but there were a few niggles that my cold, distrustful heart had to ignore or put aside to continue to enjoy this, especially when it came to the fast progression of how quickly Jamie accepts his newfound luck and the initial weirdness of Guy. However, once those few roadblocks were overcome, this really was a sweet love story with very little relationship angst.

I guess you could say that this is a modern day fairy tale where dreams really do come true. Just check your BS meter at the door and get ready for quite the lovely and really hot romance! Yowza!!! Enjoy!

Oh, how I needed this book. My luck with reading so far in 2017 hasn't been that great. Of the 5 or 6 books I've read only one (before this one) has really been enjoyable. I didn't just enjoy Step by Step. I loved it and didn't want to put my Kindle down for even a minute once I started reading it. It's been a long time since I've read a book that I wanted to read in one sitting.

Jamie, almost 21, is having a horrible day. He's getting evicted from his apartment. He doesn't have money to pay next semester's tuition. He's working three jobs and barely surviving. After a phone conversation with his dad he's convinced his long-time dream of becoming a lawyer is about to be destroyed. He hangs up the phone having not even asked his father for help. It's his parents' fault he's in this mess anyway. They'd saved money for years for Jamie's education only to use it all to fund their very bitter divorce. Dear old Dad thinks he's rolling in the cash because he's working three jobs. I wasn't a fan of Jamie's parents and that didn't change as the story played out.

Guy, 38, doesn't mean to eavesdrop on Jamie's phone conversation with his father but he can't help it. He can, however, help Jamie with all his problems. Once upon a time, when he was the same age as Jamie, he too was in a desperate situation and a kind man helped him. He wants to pay that forward with Jamie if he'll let him.

Jamie is understandably hesitant. Guy could be a serial killer for all he knows. After talking to Guy a little more he agrees to his offer. He has no choice, really. He's about to be homeless and he can't afford to pay next semester's tuition. Guy will give him a place to live, pay his tuition, and even give him an allowance so he can quit all three of his jobs and focus only on his studies - no strings attached. All he asks is that someday Jamie help out someone as he - and Guy before him - had been helped.

This is a love story so you know they eventually get together. It doesn't happen fast and it shouldn't. Jamie has spent his life believing he's straight, though he's never thought sex with a girl was all that. He got off but the experiences didn't make him like other guys his age, wanting it all the time. Everything changes when Jamie overhears Guy having sex with a man on the other side of his bedroom wall. He gets so turned on that he has to take matters into his own hands, so to speak. *grin* After that, things slowly progress and they work toward each other, though that was never part of the original plan.

I love books with characters who have substantial age differences so the seventeen years between Jamie and Guy were right up my reading alley. Because the author allowed the relationship to progress slowly the characters were allowed ample time to work out what they really wanted, especially Jamie. He'd believed his entire life he was straight and then suddenly that was thrown out the window. I don't, however, see this as a GFY story. I see it as OFY because Jamie had never really known who he was until he met Guy. Guy opened up feelings he never knew he had.

Then there are the secondary characters. I fell in love with Ryan, Jamie's best friend. There's also Cole, Guy's district attorney friend, and John, a bar owner. For some reason I could totally picture Ryan and Cole together in their own book. They're as different as night and day, which is probably why I'd love to see it. If not them together, I do hope Ryan, Cole, and John do get their own books. If so, I'll eagerly await the releases.

If you're looking for a sweet love story with scorching hot sex scenes I can't recommend Step by Step enough. Fantastic book.

First off, can we talk about that cover! That look passing between them? That is Guy and Jamie. This is a sweet, fairytale-like story. I love age gap romances and this one worked well for me. Guy is 38 and Jamie is 20 when they meet in the public library, and Jamie is having probably the worst day of his life. Jamie is putting himself through college as his parents spent his college fund on their seemingly endless divorce proceedings, he is working three two jobs (he was just let go from one), and he has just been evicted from his apartment. He’s trying to decide whose couch he could crash on since he can’t bear to be around either of his parents as they bash the other.

Guy overhears Jamie’s phone conversation and offers to listen if he wants to talk. After hearing all the details he offers Jamie a deal – a place to live and full payment of his tuition; the only repayment he asks is for Jamie to pay it forward someday. Guy was once in a similar position and had a benefactor help him out. Jamie is Guy’s opportunity to settle the debt he feels is owed. Although Jamie is skeptical at first, seeing Guy’s house and listening to him convinces Jamie to give it a try. After all, he’s about to homeless and desperate to continue his education. Jamie is soon assured that Guy is just a good man paying it forward. The two get along great and Guy, through his connections and past experience, does everything he can to help Jamie out with his schooling and to reach his goal of becoming a lawyer. As their living situation goes on, Jamie starts to think maybe he isn’t so straight after all. He’s had little time for dating and had never really considered his sexuality, but Guy is bringing out thoughts and feelings that are foreign but are far from unpleasant.

This is a very slow burn. The two bond over everyday living, Jamie meets Guys twins who are the same age as him and different as night and day. About halfway through the story, when Jamie finally gets up the nerve to ask for what he wants (after a dose of liquid courage) watch out because their first kiss is HOT! That kiss just sets the stage for some of the hottest sex scenes K.C. Wells has written in a while. From sexting, to Jamie being more than willing to learn all there is to know about what turns both him and Guy on, the sex was plentiful and varied but didn’t overwhelm the story.

The dual POV works great here. We get to see that Guy isn’t after anything from Jamie and it isn’t until friends start pointing out the looks they sneak at each other that Guy starts to look at Jamie differently, not that he would make a move on his straight roomie. Meanwhile, Jamie is struggling with figuring out and placing a label on his sexuality. His friend Ryan is his go to for support and guidance even if he does sometimes make his point at the expense of embarrassing Jamie.

This isn’t an angsty story, in fact it’s relatively drama free outside of them just figuring out how to make things work. Guy and Jamie both act like adults and work hard to make sure the transition from friends to lovers is what they both want. The age gap of about 17 years doesn’t bother Guy and Jamie, though it bothers some of their family members who have no qualms about letting them know it. Sure, there are some awkward moments, but their chemistry and the love that develops naturally between them drives the story.

I absolutely loved the Epilogue, and Guy’s friend and Jamie’s mentor Cole’s suspicious behavior there makes me wonder if his story isn’t in the works as I write this. If you love a feel good, super sexy, relationship centered story, go check this one out.

Sometimes Wells is just way too corny for me.

Also...the bit about them watching the movie Shelter? This ruined the story a bit for me because that movie is...mediocre. I'll admit it's leagues better than some of the other gay cinema I've witnessed, but the chemistry between the two leads is awkward, making it difficult to believe they feel romantic affection for one another. So the two MCs here lauding the film's merits was a little off-putting. On top of that, Wells actually screwed up when she was describing a scene from the movie:

"He watched Zach pacing up and down in the spot where he and Shaun had kissed..."

Nope. Shaun and Zach kissed at Shaun's house, on one of the bedroom balconies. Later, Zach was pacing on the rooftop where he did a lot of his art.

I'm nitpicking. But damn it, it bugged me.

BTW, for all you M/M lovers out there who want to watch something truly beautiful, check out the third season of the Norwegian TV show Skam. That is worth watching.

Imagine sitting by yourself in a library, wracking your brain to figure out to come up with money for rent, for tuition, and that pesky food you need, all while being just 20 years old and working three jobs, because your parents have blown your college fund on their acrimonious divorce, when suddenly, the older, good-looking and seemingly wealthy man sitting at a table across from you makes you an offer that sounds too good to be true - come live at his house (it's big enough), save money on rent, keep going to college to become a lawyer like you want, and I'll even teach you how to cook.

You'd be running out the door as fast as your feet can carry you, amirite? Because nobody is that generous without wanting a little something in return. Right?

Well, in the case of Step By Step, you'd be wrong.

Jamie is 20, broke as fuck, and doesn't know how to come up with the next month's rent. He's approached by Guy, 38, who was once in a similar situation and who was saved from the poorhouse by someone making the same offer he's now making to Jamie. He's genuine, nice, and wanting to pay it forward.

Oh, and he's gay. With an ex-wife, grown kids, and still mourning the loss of his lover/benefactor a few years ago.

So Jamie, once he's gotten over the shock and disbelief, moves in with Guy. Has use of a car. Drops one, then another of his three jobs. And learns to cook. And makes Guy laugh and smile more than Guy can remember.

And falls in love. When Jamie turns 21, he musters his courage and asks Guy for a kiss. At this point, Guy is already head over heels, but still thinks that Jamie is straight. Surprise!!

There's very little drama here between Guy and Jamie, and I loved that. The age gap is mentioned, but doesn't cause any friction between the two men, as Guy realizes that Jamie is an adult and makes his own decision, and if falling in love with Guy is what he wants, then Guy is only to happy to return the sentiments.

The drama in this book is primarily caused by people outside of their relationship, primarily Guy's spoiled brat of a son, and his petty ex-wife. Guy's daughter is cut from a different cloth, and since they're close in age, she and Jamie become fast friends quickly.

Time and again Jamie surprises Guy with his maturity level, and there were moments when I wanted to smack Guy just a little bit, because he shouldn't have been so surprised, dammit. Though I forgave him when he introduced Jamie to some of his friends and thus provides a leg up for the young man, consistent in supporting his aspirations, just like he promised he would.

Also, sexy times. HOLY SMOKING SHEETS, BATMAN!! Jamie goes after what he wants, he doesn't care about labels and only sees the person - cue "let's get it on". This author can really, really write the sexy times and bring across ALL the feelz. *fans self*

The ending - gah. Beautiful. Might have sniffled just a little.

This book was lovely and I enjoyed every moment I spent reading it, HEA and all. Definitely recommended!

Guy and Jamie's story

I have to start off by saying this is a new author for us and it was a first enjoyable read for us.I normally don't read this kind of gene so it was nice to mix things up a bit and try something new and we are so glad we gave this author a try.We will be looking forward to this authors new releases as the come out.

I loved the plot it was something you don't normally read about strangers doing good deeds and paying it forward so I am glad that was part of what brought this couple together .I really loved this couple they were so cute together. The story also touched on what couples and families encounter as well as friends when those not accepting of the lifestyle one chooses to live.I loved how Guy handled his own family none accepting ways.I really felt horrible for him at the way his ex wife and son dealt with his current lifestyle yet ,it never seem to get him down. Guy seem to take it in stride instead.I loved the fact that this wasn't the kind of story about instant chemistry and acting on it.This story was more about a straight man discovering he is attracted to his room mate and what to do about the feeling he is having.Guy was gay but never once forced his lifestyle on his room mate even though he new from their very first meeting that he was attracted to Jamie.I loved how Guy never forced Jamie to feel the same way and accepted that he was straight .As a reader we felt the struggles that Jamie was having at fighting his attraction he had toward Guy.My heart went out to him as he struggled to deal and find himself and come to grippes whether it was an attraction to all men or just Guy.I feel in this case it was more about finding your on true mate and not whether your gay, straight, or bisexual it was about trusting your hearts chosen choice.

I always pick a favorite character in a story and mine is going to be Jamie.I picked
Jamie as he was just so sweet all the time and I liked how protective he was toward Guy's happiness only wanting the best for him .I liked that he was focused and driven.I loved how he was willing to face and explore the feelings he was having toward Guy even though he had reservations about his own sexual identity.I loved how this couple gradually let things evolved and never once forced each other to feel things other than what they we feeling .I loved how Jamie was willing to explore what could be with Guy instead of letting his own fears get the best of him.I loved how this couple simply fell in love and decided that each of them is what the other needed in order to be truly happy.

I loved the story all around.I really enjoyed Guy as well I thought he was super sweet also had an amazing vibrant personality.I loved how he was willing to trust his heart to another after losing the life of his life.I loved the things this couple did to get to know one another .I loved this couple interactions with their friends they added humor to the story and gave us more than a few chuckles.I really enjoyed that Guy and Jamie had a sense of humor because I believe that it was the way this couple got over the awkwardness when they were with friends or alone. It helped Jamie feel more comfortable with the feelings he was experiencing and the decisions he need to make for himself.

This was overall quite an endearing love story that touch my heart as I loved this couple and wished for a happy ending for them. This story was a page turner for me that had me finishing this story and one sitting as you could not put it down.I loved how the author did an amazing job and creating a story that did not focus on being gay or straight and more on a couple that simply happened to fall in love with each other that happen to be the same sex. This couples sexual chemistry and their sexual encounters definitely burned up the sheets .That added element of erotica and their sexual teasing made their sexual encounters even hotter !I loved as a reader that I was able to connect with the main characters and I did just that.I could not get enough of them.

I recommended read to all.I thought that the author did a amazing job with this story that made you actually feel things for this couple as well as their struggles.

ARC given to us for and honest read and we are giving it 5 stars .I absolutely love it and its characters.

I'm going to be honest right from the start and mention that I have never read a KC Wells book that I didn't give 4.5-5 stars too. There is just something about her style of writing, the characters she creates, the stories she tells that hits me just perfect. There are several of her books that I have read over and over again. (The entire Collars and Cuffs series, for example) This book, Step by Step, will be added to the canon of KC Wells novels that will be revisited quite frequently by me.

Jamie is a 20 yo college student, struggling under massive debts and bills. He is in danger of failing school and has no idea how to get out of the mess he is in, most of which is not his fault. At a coffee shop, one day, Jamie runs into Guy, a 38 year old attorney. Guy had been helped out by an older mentor (and later lover) and now was going to "pay it forward" to Jamie, if he is willing. Guy is attracted to Jamie, but Jamie is straight- at least at the beginning of the novel. As there relationship grows, from mentor to friend to something else, Guy and Jamie have to deal with the pitfalls of their age difference, miscommunication, and conflicts with family and friends.

This novel hits two tropes pretty hard. The first is the May-December (or maybe May- September; there is an 17-18 year difference, but two other recent novels I've read have 22-26 year differences!) There are the usual issues with each MC worried about the age difference from their views. What makes this novel different is the way Ms. Wells is able to get into the heads of the characters and get you to feel their conflict. The second trope is the gay-for- you/realizing you're gay (GFY) idea. Jamie has never thought of himself as gay, but as his relationship with Guy grows, he begins to experience thoughts that he'd never had before. What I liked most about this story line was that Guy never put any pressure on Jamie to explore/express those feelings. He let Jamie know that he was attracted to him, but that he was OK with Jamie being straight and there was no quid pro quo deal for Guy's continued support. He just allowed Jamie to come around at his own pace.

This is one of K.C. Wells best novels. I loved the story line (I have a personal interest in May-December stories!) and loved the two MCs. Her secondary characters are also well-drawn and most are very likable as well. (Ok, Guy's son and ex-wife need to be beaten!) K.C. just has this ability to make me, at least, fall in love with her characters over and over. And throw in K.C.s ability to write some of the hottest bedroom scenes out there... I don't even like to call them sex scenes because they are just so romantic!

Now, for the obligatory disclaimer... I received an ARC of this book in exchange for writing a review. But it did not affect my opinion. K.C. is one of my automatic buy authors because she just ticks all of my boxes as an author!

You might just need to practice your suspense disbelief in order to enjoy this book because it is seriously too good to be true. If this is a historical romance, it might be more believable. But in this 21st century, we are too jaded and too cynical to trust a perfect stranger even though they had the best intention. Something about having a backbone and not taking free lunch?

Jamie is down on his luck college student working multiple jobs, owing rent and with no help from his parents whatsoever. The last thing he expect is getting financial assistance and free accommodation from a perfect stranger. This doesn't happen in real life, right?

Guy is filthy rich and a man of leisure. Yup, he doesn't seems to work anymore and he had more money than he could ever spend. When he came across Jamie, he decided to pay it forward and help a struggling youngster. Even though it might take a big effort to convince the poor guy that he had no nefarious intention.

One thing that I notice in this book is everyone is so nice and tend to overshare. I use to be annoy with characters keeping to themselves, but in this case here, Guy and Jamie really did put all their cards on the table. Nothing is spare and they both even have bffs at hand to listen to their predicament. Ain't they perfect?

They both had a huge age gap with Guy's children almost the same age as Jamie. I might find it weird in the beginning, but Guy didn't treat Jamie like a child, mostly just like a regular housemate. Guy is openly gay and Jamie is supposed to be straight. But the more time they spent together, Jamie unconsciously got attracted to Guy and one curiosity lead to another and more.

I think they both are endearing couple to read. There isn't big drama or angst. They fit into each other lives seamlessly and although Jamie just realize he is attracted to a man, he didn't freak out, instead he decided he will go with his heart. Guy is doing everything he can to help Jamie succeed in his path to become a lawyer and Jamie is accepting it with open arms.

Love is a gift you can only keep by giving it away. The best way to repay kindness is not to pay it back but to pay it forward. We have all heard and used these statements at one time or another in our lives. In Step by Step K. C. Wells brings these two statements to life.

Jaime, a 20-year-old, straight, college student with perfect grades and a solid life plan wakes up one day to find his entire life has fallen down a huge, black financial rabbit hole. Just as he decides his dreams are about to come to a tragic end he meets Guy. Guy is a 38-year-old gay man who has been repeatedly blessed. He comes upon Jaime, in the library, and overhears his conversation outlining his plight. He sees an opportunity to pay forward the good fortune he was once blessed with in a similar situation and makes an offer to Jaime, destined to change both of their lives. The variables in this dynamic are many. May/ December, gay/straight, and everyone is not exactly happy about this Guy’s solution to Jaime’s problems.

The title, Step by Step, aptly defines the growth and development of Guy and Jamie’s relationship and discovery of who they are deep inside that special place where the heart keeps it’s innermost and deepest desires. This is a sweet steady moving story with main and supporting characters that are well developed both individually and in their relationship to each other. You find yourself so drawn in to the storyline that you are amazed when you see the word “Epilogue”. The story is well developed and moves steadily to a conclusion that leaves you asking – When is book 2? Once you pick up Step by Step you won’t put it down until you’ve read it all.

A free copy of this book was provided to me by the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Ooooh I love me some Jamie ❤
This is sweet and adorable and low of angst. I loved how Jamie and Guy didn't jump into a friends with benefit or sugar daddy kind of relationship.
Jamie has his dignity and Guy played along with it.
He let Jamie set his own pace to their relationship, step by step.
Hell not even after 60 percent mark.
But surprisingly this slow burn didn't make me want to strangled someone, it was just has it's own time, and no rush.
There's one time I was kinda pissed at Guy (I won't explain it here). But I think it make sense though.
Jamie is mature for his age and I'm glad, he's just the right one for Guy.
Overall, I really liked this one.

Loved this book. Both characters were great and had awesome chemistry. Even if I'm not a big fan of great age gaps, their story was sweet and sexy as all get out. K.C. Wells knows how to write hot sex and a good story.

This is a relationship driven, sweet romance with an age difference between the two MC's and some very, very sensual love making.

A modern day fairytale if you will. And why not? Sometimes, a little flufflepuff is good for the soul. If you have ever seen An Affair To Remember, Pretty Woman, Beauty and the Beast, you get the idea.

It's not gaggy sweet or too perfect. That would be boring and dumb. This latest from KC is a cut above. Way above.

It cannot be easy to make it all work and KC manages to pull it off.

5 deserving stars for the feels good alone. I hope there is more coming. We can all use a little more romance.
