A collection of poetic reflections on life and death. Ranging from musings on youth and age, and elegies on bereavement and grief to meditations on the nature of mortality, these are poems that explore our precious time on this earth and perhaps even offer some comfort for those seeking consolation.
This was a bit of a mixed bag. I liked some of the poems, not others but overall I enjoyed reading it. The book is separated into different categories, including youth and age, death and grief and reflection and comment. Some poems I liked for their rhythm and the questions they raise, others I didn't care for so much due to the bleakness they contain - not purely in terms of covering death, which of course the title gives away that a lot of poems are about that but more because so many are specifically about war settings (think Wilfred Owen etc.).
Some poems I recognised and others were brand new to me. I haven't studied poetry but I thought its a pretty good book as a general coffee table/quick reference type of a read. I also like that at the back of the book, there's an index of poets as well as an index of first lines. Yes I'd recommend this book.
A great short collection of poetry with many different authors. Each poem shows both the beauty and dark nature that can be found within both life and death. If you are looking for a poetry collection to introduce you to a variety of poets then this is a great choice!
