*review of The One Who Devours by Felicia Beasley* Fast and enjoyable read. Lex is running her brother's business after his disappearance, together with Wes. One day, she is contacted by no one else than archangel Michael himself, searching for his runaway bride Veria. Accompanied by Wes, her boyfriend Killian and the little fiend Fi, Lex follows the trace of dead angel bodies directly to the human-angel pair. Nice story, quickly developing, with several twists and a bit surprising and confusing closure. I liked the characters and their slight development over the short time, and the sharp and witty language used to tell the story from Alexis' perspective. I was given an ARC of the book and voluntarily decided to review it.
I really enjoyed this short read. Lex as always is entertaining and strong. The men? Well are a mystery themselves hahahhaha But it's not the case that has me on the edge of my seat. Ok this case was pretty good and having Killian and Wes kind of working together was fun. But what is coming? Ohhhhhh I'm intrigued. Can't wait to see what else comes our Lexs way.
I was given an ARC of one of the stories in exhange for an honest review : The One who Devours by Felicia Beasly - fantastic story written with her usual flair. Can't go wrong if you like paranormal fiction.
A great addition to the series. I enjoyed trying to solve the mystery with the characters and the darker tone that sets the stage for the next book in the series. I'm really anxious to see what happens next. I voluntarily reviewed an arc from the author.
I've only had my hands on an ARC of Felicia Beasley's The One Who Devours but if the rest of the box set is anything like this story, think winner in a big way. In Harry Dresden style, the author weaves a sassy heroine who is always making enemies and allies with things that can kill her. A big story for such a few pages, the Trenton case is layered with intrigue and plenty of action with just a little bit of romance thrown in for good measure for a fun story. My voluntary review is based upon an ARC.
Previously, I had read a story in this series by Ms. Beasley called Nephilim Falling and became an instant fan. After reading the short story in this set by her, my interest has been cemented. I found it to be even better than the first, even if this one was more like a novella. Great writing, interesting characters (Killian!), and a great, interesting plot are very present in this story. I can see how much Lex has grown up on the two years since the first book. She has taken over her brother’s business and made it her own, and she’s approached by the angel Michael to take on a case of a missing angel. What follows is a fascinating story I couldn’t put down: full of action, an interesting plot (which I said before), and extremely well-written. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next one. If this story is anything like the other stories, this set is really, really excellent. Highly recommend! This exact review will be posted on both Amazon and Goodreads.
*So far, this review is only for Double Double by Wendy Knight*
Double Double - Wendy Knight - 5 stars!
I love Cauldron Bubble and Fire Burn, so I was super excited to get more Fate and Destiny! I love the humor in this series, and I love the fun, interesting world Wendy Knight creates! The whole series is wonderful! In Double Double, we get a glimpse at Fate and Destiny's lives before the events in the first book, Cauldron Bubble, while they have a little adventure, and are finding out more about witches, spells, and warlocks, and we get to see a pinch of the beginning of Fate and Damien's relationship. Fate and Destiny are in their quirky best in this novella, and I love getting more story with the two! I of course want more, so I'm excited to continue on with this series! I don't think it's absolutely necessary to read the other books before this one; since this one is a prequel, but I think it made me feel more of a connection with the girls as a reader because I've already read the other 2 books in the series, but either way would work, and this book does give a good indication of the tone of the rest of the books. Fun, entertaining, quick read! Love Wendy Knight's writing, and I'm definitely looking forward to more!
Review for The One Who Devours by Felicia Beasley Lex is back after her boyfriend Lucas dying and her brother Damien turned up missing. Lex and Wes are running the agency with Wes trying to protect Lex and keep her out of investigating. Fast paced, unique series with interesting and likeable characters. I love this series and Lex's attitude!
This set starts out with Monica Corwin's Double or Nothing story. What a great time travel tale!!! I really hope that goes into an actual series! Loving the other stories too! What a great deal at 99 cents!
I read The One Who Devours and let me tell you I am fairly certain I have become completely obsessed with this author. I have read everything for this series so far and am just waiting, impatiently, for the next installment which comes out in april. I cannot get enough of Lex. She is way to good for Killian and Wes in my opinion. The vision at the end had my head spinning and me thinking omg why is it not april yet so I can read the next installment now!!!! I simply have to know what happens. Also I have to wonder how the rest of this collection will possibly hold up against this amazing story!
Wendy knight always gets me with Fate and Destiny. I loved all the other books in the series and was excited to read the little prequel. We knew from the other books what happened more or less but I was so glad to read how it all really happened. I still love Fate more and I am super glad she and Damien do last after the potion wears off. the girls discovering the extent of their powers is nothing short of amusing.
Not Kindle Unlimited, got an ARC for The One Who Devours by Felicia Beasley but noticed the sale price and wanted to see who only knows what that Jackson Dean Chase was in to now, too, so sort of a combo all books type thing review. Want to know a blurb of the plot? They have one at the top, I don't do those #becauseSpoilers, Beasley and JDC and all the rest are listed {click to telescope out the list to see all}, go to the writer pages, lots of other books you probably haven't read yet, ya know, for after you finish this one and all. I liked the other stories, too, mind you, but am horrible at names so for better or worse as the case may be remember her's and his and that's pretty much all at the moment. Oh yeah, blah blah ARC voluntary copy and ditto review, as if I ever did anything much more than read/review.
For anyone else interested in Beasley, The One Who Devours is a short novella taking place about 6 months after Descent at about half the length, and introduces a character that will be appearing in her Trenton Investigation series. For anyone interested in Chase, once you've cleared it with your shrink have at it, he's usually morbidly amusing on several levels which means half the time the level has to do with Dante.
So far I have only read Felicia Beasley's book The One Who Devours - All I can say is if the rest of the stories are of this caliber this is most definitely the set to purchase. Trenton is looking for her brother and will take any case that will get her closer to him. But is it the case or her associates she needs to watch out for. Plenty of action and intrigue with a crazy cast of characters to keep the story interesting. Great read.
The One Who Devours is a short story (Trenton Investigations Novella 2) set in the Trenton Investigations World. It's one of Lex's cases that takes place about six months after Descent (Trenton Investigations Novella 1), almost two years after Nephilim Falling (Trenton Investigations Prequel to Book 0.5). Its also a great introduction to the first official book: Whips, Chains, and Brimstone (Trenton Investigations Book 1, as indicated by Felicia Beasley) but it will be limited in it's appearance to the Rebels and Runes Urban Fantasy Novella Collection for three months; as per Amazon publication standards. The Rebels and Runes Box Set is an urban fantasy medley of stories by twenty-three leading authors at an outstanding price of $US0.99. I'd have to agree with Felicia that this short novella pleasantly morphed from an originally planned short story into something with more substance. The novella numbering above is however something of my 0own contribution to the outline of books so far, not how Felicia orders them herself.
With Felicia's addition to the collection the story doesn't inherently require knowledge of the world where the events take place: unless that is, you're a stickler for chronological timelines. If that is the case, then the above outline delineates this information in regards to the Trenton Investigations World. Take it from me that in relation to Lex (Alexis) Trenton's exploits, every story not yet including book one - only because I'm patiently awaiting it's release - is outstanding five star reading entertainment. Her life thus far has run the fall gammit of supernatural and late-teen experiences, in an environment where only the strong survive. Lex is also still discovering the places she's capable of going to and reaching for in regards to the moral righteousness she's prepared to fight for. Between pre-order discounts, low pricing and inclusions in box sets like the above there's presently hours of Lex's adventures and hardships for next to no financial outlay. Below is the more specific information relating to The One Who Devours. .............................................................................................................................................................................................................
Whilst a certain "not-boyfriend" (a.k.a. Killian the hot sensual puddle of heated wetness soiling panties wherever he goes) still benefits from the brokered relationship he'd established through subtle manipulation six months ago, his business benefits contrast significantly with Trenton Investigation's. Taking on his contract had only been about paying rent, but since then Lex has broken the promise to herself that she wouldn't venture down roads made by intimacy with him that will undoubtedly ruin her sexual capacity to enjoy other lovers once he does what all demons do: he moves on when she no longer serves any purpose to him. Lex hadn't needed first hand knowledge to know that once you go to the realms of sexual pleasures found in an incubus repertoire of lust fueled passion, you become ruined for an unknown length of time in being able to reach climax in even the most minor comparative ways with lovers who aren't of the same ilk. Indeed she knew humans become hopelessly addicted, and that her cambion halfbreed nature offers protection from the physical trappings of the former, but not necessarily the psychological equivalent.
Getting back to her business interest, whilst Killian sent referrals to her office it was getting the clients to pay that's become next to impossible to achieve. Getting paid has become an annoyance of trying to get blood from a rock. There's a whole lot of effort and tears provoked by the sweat dripping from your brow and from the desperation of needing to pay your overdue bills, for next to no return in that investment. Whilst her labour demands increase in both completing the contracts and in attempting to follow up on getting paid, her bank balance is doing whatever it is that comes after the point of decreasing. If Killian were to be quoted on his response to her objections over the deadbeats he keeps sending, he would say that the reason she isn't getting paid has nothing to do with the clients, and everything to do with her not being intimidating enough to force payment for services rendered. If she were to take his advice and go to Sheol to force payment by the respective parties, though, there'd just be one more dead cambion in an unmarked grave. That is, only after the delectable parts are eaten first.
Despite knowing the first rule of dealing with demons is that you only have their attention as long as you are useful, she still finds herself learning the hard way. After you cease to exist, pushing can promptly cause you to become another type of useful: food. Getting ready to give a serve to the latest arrival pushing through the office door, Lex's essence driven sixth sense kicks in as her face freezes in shock. Angel blooded don't acquire help from anyone as low on the food chain as those who work at Trenton Investigations. Whilst absent the nearly uniform divine beauty of such beings the blood running through her veins didn't lie. Complicating things her body seemed at first to be responding like it is under the influences of the sex-magic that drives Charm. Only demonkind are meant to possess the ability to enrapture in such a way, but there is no denying she needs to bathe in his essence, and it has absolutely nothing to do with looks. On closer examination however, it is revealed as much worse than a need to mount him, it is a need to serve. Such a reaction is completely foreign and assuredly holds far greater potential for harm.
The prospective client announcing his name allows her the first vestige of something to break through the tension coiled in her body. Surely the Michael he claims his name is isn't that Michael, the King of Heaven? She hadn't met him and nor was she ever likely to, but its preposterous to even think that that Michael would ever require assistance, let alone from a halfbreed demon cambion he could smite with just a look. Lex's attempts at comic relief in pointing out the angelic commonality falls stone cold dead when he states that particular thread wasn't present when he was created. There's something infinitely scary when a being says they're created, not born. That a creator had a hand in their existence drums up images of biblical proportion. Even with the combined gifts of their employees and Killian being present would remove none of the fear evoked by his words. With less words than those you'd find in an average sentence, Michael hinted at dangers none of them would've faced; and nor could they defeat it if it came down to it.
Her instant hurling into the trashcan when he drops the magic holding back his angelic aura bodes well only if you were considering the chance of having your funeral in the next few days. Accepting whatever his custom required could very well present such a possibility. Sane and normal people don't ever consider declining one such as he and expect to live, but then sane and normal weren't descriptions usually associated with her name. It galls her further that no sooner does she finish hurling, he removes the presence of his aura altogether. If she wasn't still fearing for her future she'd call him out for his prize cock posturing. If she were to walk in now from the room in the back of the office, she'd have believed that just a normal human sat there.
Although with her sensitivity to essence she'd have felt it back there too. The likely difference being that she might've managed to keep the contents of her stomach where they're meant to be. Obvious now is the unspoken meaning of his way of introducing himself, and so is the now unsaid fact that her client is none other than one of the first group of beings created, an archangel. In some ways he might as well be that Michael. What is it with beings of enormous power that makes them wear it like a badge, as if the words they speak and the actions they perform aren't enough to set the parameters of their presence, or the large arse wings only later ripping from his back. Geez Louise this guy has it bad, you'd think after that many thousands of years it'd be long enough to get past your own need to flop it out to compare measurements.
Magic had obviously been used during his arrival to keep at bay his now more than obvious true nature. She is now intimately aware that archangels are gifted the ability to appear as anything from the smallest to the highest being, in respect to their repertoir of abilities. Thankfully for her its more than potentials that get her interested, not that her latest fling is a good example of her capacity to make the smartest choices; if she can keep telling herself that that's all it is. Had archangels not been so few she's pretty sure more would be spoken of when referring to their kind. For everybody she'd ever known or discussed power with, magic always required a drawn symbol, power in the form of the energy in preternatural blood to charge it up, and a spoken word (or words) of power that directs it's intention. Only rumour had previously theorised for her that their were rare more powerful beings for whom magic required none of the requisite trifecta. For them its as simple as thoughts. It is they who were also endowed with a capacity for creation, an adjunct of the fact they were the creator's first beings. Lex would come away from this meeting to be able to give a name to the rumours that circulate the world about beings who don't require the trifecta, and like many rumours the stories they speak contain a kernel of truth.
Lex was cold enough with the realisations already made, but when Michael says he's there to speak with Damian, her Nephilim half brother by their shared human mother, a new coldness traverses the her spine. Untrusting of anyone who hasn't proven trust through their actions, not their words, and especially not a preternatural, Lex is reluctant to share the information she has. In fact, its not until she could establish the connection between Damian and someone he'd never once mentioned knowing, did she even reveal him as missing. In the end it was the exchange of services by Michael that was a game-changer. He has a missing fiance, Veria, and she a missing brother, for whom her whole world revolved around. The last two years have established the two hardest emotional weights she can ever recall carrying. A quid pro quo is too much to be passed over, though. If through his position then Empyrean can be sourced in the search for Damian she can't pass over the opportunity, if she even had the choice to begin with. Michael is the first link to the celestial dimension she'd had the opportunity to create, an important link she's been unable to use in her search for Damian. Michael denies he is there which is supported by the fact that he is even sitting in their crappy chair, but he'd not sourced that avenue given he never knew until now that Damian is missing.
When her gut feeling, that's not indigestion regardless of what her business partner says, surrounding two dead angels in the case notes of the local morgue's doctor kicks in, the fact that the unknown victims had been dined upon signifies a gruesome potential connection between victims. Between Sentinels and the local constabulary there'd be little to offer in the way of evidence. She could try the latter but the former would try to kill her. If it looks and smells like shit, then, well you get the drift. As she'll do whatever is necessary to get her brother back, her understanding of why he's even missing being a daily frustration she cannot put to bed, then its off to chat with a certain detective. When demonic and celestial beings enter a crowded room and attempt to take in the danger of the entities within, Lex Trenton is among the last earmarked as being a possible threat.
If they don't mean her, her loved ones, or the righteous she swears to protect through her contracts taken on at Trenton Investigations, then their assumptions are a pretty safe bet. But even though she is just an unimportant cambion in the eyes of those who generally matter, there's something as yet unclear regarding what makes her among the most dangerous. Its the unassuming assumptions by others that go a way to making her more dangerous, not to mention her attitudes and the things that drive her to go above and beyond. Then there's the part of her that rears up like a monster straight out of your worst nightmares, but even she doesn't understand it's part. All in all she's capable and has a proven track record of delivering final death to those well outside her weight range. If you're standing between her and where she needs to be, then the safest bet is to get out of the road. Even if Lex Trenton isn't punching heavy enough she has some of the heaviest hitters that call themselves her friends.
Felicia has an uncanny ability to write into the plot unexpected turns even when you are certain you know what's about to take place. These twists and turns can appear right up until the last pages of the story you think can't go anywhere but the place mapped out in your mind. Candidness and an open dialogue that doesn't hold out on useless sensibilities combine to leave little unsaid, taking you to the areas that can often be avoided or overlooked because writers are either uncomfortable going there, or perhaps want their stories suitable to age groups that limit the nature of entertainment the others enjoy. In wanting to be suitable for everyone certain content might be seen as inappropriate for the outer edges of the applicable age range. Such approaches are all well and good, but they do leave certain things absent from the range of content mature readers may enjoy. There's nothing obscene or scandalous, its simply the complete mannerisms, thoughts, feelings and behaviours of the average person from about the age of seventeen upward.
The characters of Trenton Investigations who are the staples have the likeable qualities you want in a group or at a party to ensure the time spent is as enjoyable as can be. The design of the three environments, although one is known but not fully experienced yet, permit unrestrained possibilities which leaves the door wide open for the places where plots can venture. Whilst the stories solve the premise they introduced, there's also aspects linking the books in a chronological order, but thus far it wouldn't exactly limit the order in which they're read: as long as you remember the time span given by Felicia in her commentary on the series to date. Her central character drives the directions and holds the reins almost entirely, but Lex is still one of several and the stories are all the more enriched for it. I'd expect that given her nature and style, she'll also begin collecting more friends and foes as the more central full length novels take effect. This is set to begin soon with the upcoming first major book, Whips, Chains, and Brimstone. These early additions have gathered a full momentum and created an urban fantasy environment you should include in any fantasy library. For a short novella, The One Who Devours packs a full sized punch. ............................................................................................................................................................................................................
Magic Awakens is the short story prelude to an upcoming urban fantasy series by Dominika Waclawiak. The Wilder Chronicles Book 1 - A Case of Magic will be missing an individually published prequel upon it's release 8th April 2017 (in Australia); if the prequel is planned for individual publication at all. The prequel is currently available only in the Rebels and Runes Boxed Set Collection for three months after it's release date 28th March 2017 as per Amazon's publication regulations. Its the eleventh inclusion in this urban fantasy collection which compiles twenty-three authors and their accompanying stories. .............................................................................................................................................................................................................
LAPD Detective Mabry Wildes doesn't have the sort of facial features that support cutting her red hair kept in a pony tail. She'd held on through instructor abuse from her time in the Police Academy. Pulling drill sergeant routines, they'd get up in her face right inside selfie range, yelling that it'd inevitably become a liability the day a perp used it as an accessory. So far, so good, even if the fly aways do sometimes get in the way. Her dimpled chin and square boyish facial features didn't need a masculine haircut to match her already less than feminine face.
Depending on how things were about to play out at it her current door-to-door investigation of a recent home invasion, their knocking might promptly become a domestic abuse after only one door. It could go either way; great timing for a wife about to be seriously hurt, or bad timing for her and her partner Detective John Peters if her read on the husband was correct. One look at the face and arms of the cowering and trembling wife who answered the door said it all. The eyes of the abuser, his hand concealed behind his back and the holes in the wall above where the wife's head came to on the couch she sat in, said where he is likely to take should they ignore the possible crime about to take place. To think, she'd gotten out of the murder squad after seeing too many fatal and DOA domestic callouts.
With the arrival of two other door knockers radiod in by Peters, it spelled their time to take control. Between the strong stench of wet dog she couldn't place in the house and the husband's voice that spoke with hatred and violence, the current situation further reminds her of why she'd gone to robbery investigations instead. Unfathomable as it is, it wasn't the husband who tipped the scales into the reslm of chaos in the end. From nowhere in particular a god awful ear splitting sound ripped through the neighbourhood, and a force picked her up and deposited her against the wall. Peters fell screaming to his knees gripping his ears and head, before writhing on the ground. The husbands eyes that had already been flickering before the sound arrived, had now gone to a brilliant yellow and was escalated by his claws that grabbed her by the arm; despite Mabry's presumption, it wasn't any sort of weapon she could freely explain that he'd been keeping from their view. The werewolf crouched in front of her that was now attached to the hidden hand explained in a completely unbelievable way as to why the wet dog smell permested the house. Her senses began filtering the pandemonium and chaos that broke out, and a rolling blue flame responding to her shock and pain, or because she now fesred for her life..
Mabry's mother had been a witch before her passing and she'd seen and read books about the magical folk during her childhood to age thirteen when her mother died. She couldn't say she was unable to recognise the stream of supernatural creatures now surrounding her, but that went no way to helping relieve her shock. Regardless, nothing could've adequately prepared her for what she is now staring at. That she could even smell the emotions flooding the environment took her completely by surprise. She now inherently knew that it was her own anger that had caused the blue flame to escape from her hand. That emotion decidedly changed once the blue had finished encompassing the werewolf's body to suddenly alter furth
Maybe I have been spoilt by the usual high quality of multi author collections. The length and quality of stories - in some cases, are more suited as cheap magazine fillers. I feel very sorry if a good author got lost in the dross - as I gave up well before the end. You know something is bad when the credits aren't given.
This review is for "The One Who Devours" by Felicia Beasley.
Ms. Beasley's writing is great & I love her characters. Demons, Angels, Nephilim, Archangels, Fiends....all these wonderful creatures appear in this story.
Lex Trenton has inherited her brother's PI business, but she only deals with preternatural clients. When the Archangel Michael appears in her office, wanting to hire her to find his fiancé, Veria, she only agrees if he will help her find her brother, Damian, in return.
If you love fantasy with a smart mouthed heroine & loads of supernatural creatures, you will love this story & the Trenton Investigation Agency.
This review is for "The One Who Devours" by Felicia Beasley.
This is another small look into Lex's life after the disappearance of her brother and takes place about 6 months after the events of Descent.
She is looking into some missing angels when as per usual, the situation is a lot more complicated than what she originally thought. Killian and Wes are still her ever present companions and Fi is actually the character that has me curious. I really want to see how she fits in with the storyline going forward.
I received this as an ARC which I voluntarily read in exchange for an honest review.
This review is for the short story The One Who Devours by Felicia Beasley. All I can say is I loved it. The insight into Lex and who she is becoming is oh so worth the read. Can not wait to read more. Love unravelling the mystery of Lex and of the other characters, also can not wait to learn more about Fi as I am sure she will be important later in the series.
I read this book....or the many stories within it...over the course of a few days as soon as it was released on Kobo. Not all of the stories in it are absolutely wonderful and honestly there were a couple I slowly trudged through and did not enjoy, but there were a few I enjoyed a lot and two that I absolutely devoured and was sad to see the end of. Had the entirety of the book been by just Felicia Beasley (The One Who Devours) and Danielle Annet (Fire Cursed) I would have definitely given this 5 stars.
Beasley's Lex Trenton is a character I couldn't help but love. She's a tough and full of attitude investigator. It was a great introduction to a world of demons, vampires, angels and much more. I am very much looking forward to reading more about Lex and her adventures, especially those containing Killian (who doesn't love a sexy incubus?). For me this story was the perfect mix of urban fantasy, action and steaminess.
So far I have read from this set: "The One Who Devours" by Felicia Beasley This is a short from the Trenton Investigations series - and if it doesn't just kill me that this is not a full-length novel *wiping tears from my eyes* Even as a short story it is packed with action and definitely leaves us questioning if Lex is going in the right direction or if she is letting her hormones misguide her.. I still have questions about Wes as well and we get to Michael (yes that Michael) which also leaves me in suspense of WTH is going to happen next? I am looking forward to reading more from this series as quite a few of the authors rank on my faves list and if their contributions to this set are anything (which I know they will be) like Beasley I am counting on a great set of short stories -
Review for Double or Nothing: Rachel is on the run because she didn't want to be Eric's play thing. But when time agents come looking for her, there may be more at steak then being someone's bride. Can Rachel fix the ripple in time? Loving this story. It does have a cliffy and I can't wait to read the next story!
The One Who Devours Half demon Supernatural PI Lex Trenton does a deal with a (possibly infamous) angel, to find a missing person in exchange for help finding her missing brother. Her work partner/ unrequited love Wes, sexual partner/ boy toy/ evil demon Killian and fiend friend Fi are, apparently, there to help. I know it's good because a) there's not enough Wes b) I have no idea what just happened there at the end and c) it's way too short-- and yet I still enjoyed it. Lex is a snarky bitch and I like that. It's good to see her doing casework, like a darker, less annoying, more conflicted Charley Davidson. I received a copy of this novella from the author in exchange for an honest review, but then I went and bought the whole collection because I liked it so much.
Brief thoughts on some of the other stories: Double or Nothing. The story had an interesting premise about time travellers that wasn't fleshed out enough and was riddled with grammatical errors 3* Reborn. Vampire story that was well written, very creepy but not my type of thing as it is basically a story about child abuse 3* Woman in Red. Sweet piece of dream ghost crime drama 4* Warlock. Enjoyable PI wizard tale of investigating a disappearance 3.5* Shapeshifting gibbon…?! Trial of wonder. Unusual but interesting story about a teenage shifter gymnast trying out for a circus. Not my thing but written with so much enthusiasm. The Grey Eagle Gambit. Generic, overly simple detective tale The Darkness is Forgiving. Scary demon story. I noted it that it needed further editing. The Dandelion Queen. An intro to fantasy story about Opal, an ex- Army medic. Interested in reading more. Spawn Initiation. Read like young adult. Cas the guardian does the world's most simple initiation. Double double. Cute but didn't really interest me. Not into high school stories and it didn't really go anywhere 3*
