Oliver Napoleon Hill was an American self-help author and conman. He is best known for his book Think and Grow Rich (1937), which is among the best-selling self-help books of all time. Hill's works insisted that fervid expectations are essential to improving one's life. Most of his books were promoted as expounding principles to achieve "success".
Hill is a controversial figure. Accused of fraud, modern historians also doubt many of his claims, such as that he met Andrew Carnegie and that he was an attorney.

Everyone needs to read and study Napoleon Hill's work! The wisdom is timeless - Easy in concept, difficult in execution (at least for me). Here are a few bits of insight I took from Napoleon Hill’s Success Principles Rediscovered

Our subconscious mind cannot distinguish between an actual event and a vividly imagined experience. “Your subconscious mind is your hidden boss, then, and gives orders to your consciousness.” Practicing the art of visualization is an important tool. Imagine yourself achieving your goal. Build a storyboard frame by frame and use your senses to add enthusiasm and energy to your mental movie. Concentrate on the one image that you want to develop. Practice several times daily to further your goal - conceive it, believe it, and achieve it.

The life we create is determined by our power to choose. “If you do what you always do, you will get what you always have got!” If your choices have not produced desired outcomes, then change your choices. Get out of your comfort zone, push yourself harder, and change the ordinary response to receive extraordinary results. Be of service instead of being served, and open up rather than close down. “The universe hates two things: a vacuum and inaction.” “Accept the challenges that life offers. Just around the corner could be your greatest challenge that comes along holding hands with the greatest reward. Choose to partner with your greatest power - the power to choose.”

Napoleon Hill said, “Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed on an equal or greater benefit.” A crisis can force one to focus and prioritize one’s actions like one has never done before. Much good can come out of adversity. Struggle sorts out the weak from the strong. The strong are resilient and rise from the ashes to become a stronger and an improved version of their past selves. Anyone can overcome poverty through determination and faith. Accept the struggle as a challenge and stumbling blocks as stepping stones. The journey of 1,000 miles begins with but a single step. Have a purpose and a plan plus the determination to carry them to fruition.

Our failures are learning tools if we heed the lesson intertwined in the failure. Do not accept defeat. If one does not possess persistence, one does not achieve noteworthy success in any calling.

We remember moments, not days. Place the best moments of our lives on our memory playlist. Which playlist do you choose to have played in your mind? Only you can decide.

The book concludes with, “When you get your own thought habits under control, you will have yourself under control, but you cannot do it by drifting. Organize your thoughts. Decide what you want, to what position in life you aspire. Then plan ways and means to express your thoughts in terms of organized action. Follow through with applied faith and unremitting persistence. This is the means by which you can become the master of your fate, the captain of your soul. Waste no time worrying about what others may think. The important thing is what you think and do.”

You are building some sort of a character all the time. Character is built slowly, step-by-step. Every thought and every act goes into it. Character is the crystallization of things you do, words you speak and the thoughts you think. Thoughts we think, emotions we feel, habits we repeat, do lead to our character development and character determines our destiny. The journey begins with the first step. What direction will you travel in?

Happiness comes only from helping others find it.

At least eight of the world’s great religions all teach the Golden Rule in one form or another. We need to raise our own level of expectations as to the universal gifts that are all around us.

“By consciously looking for the good outcome, we become co-creators of the future. We find what we look for, we receive what we expect, and we appreciate what we hold dear.” “When we respond with a positive action, negative energy is dispelled and we have a chance to erase the chalkboard and write something new.” Prefer flowers over weeds. “I suspect that intolerance and hatred and greed and jealousy will not find room in our hearts if we gather around this big round table often enough, because men cannot break bread together and still be enemies.” “You can be a man with a grievance or a man with a message; you can be a builder or a destroyer.”

Love is man’s greatest experience. It is an outward expression of the spiritual nature of man. True greatness will never be found where love does not abide. Love is the magnet that attracts the best of everything.

“When we truly want what we desire, we think about it, meditate on it, write about it, plan for its attainment, and then actually begin to take action toward achieving it one step at a time.”

Gratitude is one habit worth developing. It assists us in cultivating and maintaining a positive mental attitude. See the good in the world. What we think about, we become. As we think on the positive things, our life moves towards a positive focus. There is good in everything. Focus on finding things to praise rather than things to complain or worry about. Light candle after candle mentally until you are able to eradicate the darkness within. It is a choice. See the good or see the bad. You decide. Make it a daily habit to do some little gesture or action that will bring joy to another person. Your attitude will become and remain more and more positive.

Gratitude is a matter of comparison. Compare circumstances and events against what they might have been. You’ll become aware that no matter how bad things are, they could be much worse – and you’ll be grateful they aren’t. Be thoughtful. Try to find new and unique ways to express your gratitude. There’s always something to be grateful for.

Without the “bad“ we would not appreciate the “good.” “In every adversity and defeat, there is a seed of an equal or equivalent benefit.” “First we must pry open the shell to find the pearl hidden inside.” In maintaining a positive attitude it is a prerequisite that we cultivate an attitude of gratitude. Be thankful for the small gifts. Practice positive self-talk and remind yourself at night just how lucky and gifted you really are. Power the mind through self-suggestion, feed and nourishment. Demonstrating gratitude in advance of attainment signals our subconscious mind that we have already received it.

Napoleon Hill imagines eight princes of healthy living, noting that an attitude of gratitude always has and always will continue to work wonders. The difference in our outcome in life comes in the doing, not in the thinking about doing. What you believe – along with the actions you take – compose your life.

How do you spend your spare time and how do you spend your money? Without your health, you have nothing. You won’t have the endurance for hard work if your body isn’t conditioned. When we waste our time and money, we are lacking in gratitude for the gifts we have received.

True leaders serve because they are called to service. Leaders serve as a visionary and set the pace for the group to follow. “As in life, when you’re green you grow, when you’re ripe you rot. There can be no status quo leadership.” Through force, trickery and deceit, an individual may become a leader for a time. But no one can long be leader of any people without the consent and goodwill of those who are led.

For those aspiring to lead, you must first get your own values and beliefs in line with the mission they want to accomplish. As they say in the Marines, “Leader of one, leader of many. If you can’t lead one, you can’t lead any.” Once you declare your vision, either people will line up to endorse what you represent, or they will head in the other direction. Be certain as to the direction you are moving.

“At many stages in a person’s life faith seems to disappear just when it is needed the most. An illness or death in the family, a loss of job, a personal illness, sudden depression, financial setbacks, expectations that remain unfulfilled, and numerous other “losses” can cause a person to doubt what before had been a strong belief in the good things in life.”

Faith and fear cannot co-exist in our thoughts. We decide which memory predisposes us to our future rewards or penalties by deciding which wolf to feed. We create our outcomes by the thoughts that we choose to focus on with regularity. Fear can stop us in our tracks, but faith can open wide the path that needs to be traveled. By being faithful, we cannot be fearful. Fears can only be conquered by doing the thing we fear the most. Step on board the success train and face the fear that holds you back.

Fear is faith in reverse gear. Fear is a negative belief in something, and belief is the very foundation of faith.

Faith is a positive mental attitude in action. A positive mental attitude has its roots in the spiritual wells of one’s soul. “Keep your mental attitude right and your future will always be bright. Success goes to the person whose mental attitude is such that he expects success. And health, wealth, and happiness are products of a positive mental attitude.” “Your mental attitude, whether it be positive or negative, weaves into your character every thread of your thoughts.” A positive mental attitude is the factor which makes prayer pay off. People who work with a positive mental attitude are constantly doing the “impossible.” Our Creator has made us so that our strength grows out of our struggle. Faith is a state of mind which has been called “the mainspring of the soul.”

Besides a positive mental attitude, free from negatives such as envy, hatred, jealousy and fear, applied faith has other fundamentals, including: a definiteness of purpose, supported by personal initiative or action, recognition of the fact that every adversity carries with it the seed of benefit; the temporary defeat is not failure until it has been accepted by you as such, the habit of expressing gratitude for one’s blessings daily. When you are overtaken by defeat, remember the man’s faith is often tested in many ways, and defeat may be only your testing time; therefore, accept defeat only as an inspiration for greater effort. Think of faith as guidance from within. Applied faith is taking action in the direction of your belief. This means that you “act as if” the outcome you believe in is already a fact. Your belief, or faith, is the element which determines the action of your subconscious mind. The subconscious mind will transmute into its physical equivalent. “A mind dominated by positive emotion, becomes a favorable abode for the state of mind known as faith.”

Hope is elusive, invisible, and intangible. Like faith, and in the abstract, hope is not able to be seen, heard, touched, tasted, or smelled. Yet without it, our lives have lost the capacity to endure. Without hope lives can spiral down and even end prematurely. Hope comes from the internal optimistic belief that the best outcome will occur regardless of the circumstances. It is the lighthouse of the soul. It uplifts us and gives us momentum for the future. Hope enriches our lives. It promotes thankfulness by causing us to recognize our daily blessings. It inspires us to keep on keeping on. Hope leaves us when we permit pessimistic thoughts to invade our mental space and take up permanent residence. By choosing to be depressed rather than uplifted, hope vacates the poisonous environment. Hope is evicted and soon fear becomes the new resident.

Our power to choose creates our outcome. When hope is present, people recognize that the possibility can exist for a better end result. Why not cultivate hope? You have far less to lose than if you pursue the other option. The way to success is the way of struggle. All down the road of life you will meet with obstacles - failure and hurdles in your way. Behold - nothing is permanent! “Look back over your past and you will see that those experiences of yesterday which bore heavily on your heart at the time, and seemed to end all hope of success, passed away and left you wiser than you were before.” These are some of the greatest lessons to learn from. Every time you master failure you become stronger and better prepared to meet the next one.

Depression occurs in a person’s life for multitude reasons and, usually these causes relate directly or indirectly to one of the seven fears (poverty, criticism, ill health, loss of love, old age, loss of liberty, and death) Hill writes about. The seven “ghosts“ of fear throw us on the negative side of life and cause us to worry many times unnecessarily. We must learn about what makes us fearful and then work to control our fears.

In death and dying research, Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross states that there are five stages that individuals experience in the dying process. The stages are: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The stages mirror the change process. Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) enables each of us to retain the “I can” attitude even in the face of fear. Note: The depression stage can be viewed as a positive thing since the step labeled “depression” is the last step before “acceptance.” “Once a person accepts the change that they are going through, the cycle is complete and transition and/or learning has occurred. The struggle has ended and the worry is over.”

“The mind attracts the physical counterpart of that on which it dwells.” Feed your mind with pictures of the things you want.

Deciding your major purpose in life is a must if you want to have a clear direction for your future.

As Victor Frankl teaches us in his classic book, Man’s Search for Meaning, our attitude is ultimately the only thing we can control in life. To be happy, act happy. Success is achieved by those who try and maintained by those who keep trying. “Direct your thoughts, control your emotions, and ordain your destiny.” “A genius is simply one who has taken full possession of his own mind and directed it to objectives of his own choosing, without permitting outside influences to discourage or mislead him.”

One can do anything within reason if he or she wishes to do it badly enough. Use adversity as a shot in the arm instead of accepting it as a “kick in the pants.” The successful convert defeats into stepping stones instead of accepting them as stumbling blocks. The person who throws himself on the side of the “I can do it” impulse is the one who wins.

“Sometimes I sits and thinks, and sometimes I just sits,” is often attributed to baseball player Satchel Paige. Dr. Hill includes accurate thinking and controlled attention as two of the principles of success. Daydreaming that leads to meditation, and meditation that leads to visioning is a good way to begin. “Before you can be it, you have to see it.” No one ever became a “doer” without first becoming a “dreamer.”

Research has shown that the more you understand yourself, the better you understand others. For example, all human beings have a dominant communication trait. The four basic DISC traits are Driver, Inspirational, Supportive, and Cautious personalities. www.naphill.org
Learn about your inner workings and learn what makes others perform as well.
“When a man can manage himself, he is ready to start managing others.” Hill’s 17 Principles require self-discipline, faith in yourself, and concentration on your objective. “Your success or failure is entirely a matter of how you discipline your mind.”

Success without work lacks the substance that is satisfying. When things are handed to us, we do not appreciate them as much as if we earned them. What you earn, you value. Napoleon Hill spent over 20 years (1908-1928) on his research and studying the success methods of many American icons, for the Law of Success.

The late Cyrus H.K. Curtis, founder of the Saturday Evening Post, defined success as “the ability to get everything one desires or needs without violating the rights of others.“ Never, under any condition, engage in any transaction which does not bring equal benefits to all persons it affects. You can compromise with others but not with yourself. Establish certain standards of moral performance and adhere rigidly under all conditions.

It is not wealth that makes a person – it is character, persistence and a strong determination to be of service to the world. Success will be measured and determined by the quantity and quality of service that you render to the world.
