According to the Gecko's note at the end of the story, this is a widely-known folk tale in China and is often included in primary school textbooks. The little Gecko was crawling along the wall when a huge snake bit off his tail. He thought he looked very ugly without a tail and decided to borrow one. He turned to different animals for help. But no one was willing to lend him one. He got a new tail nevertheless. How come? The answer is a simple one. Gecko is just capable of growing a new tail if the old one is lost. The book creatively and artistically showcases some basic knowledge of animals and their tails for the very young. The vivid and artistic Chinese brush paintings are just so amazing.
