In the mid-21st century, a worldwide conflict is brought on by global petroleum shortage. Several nations enter Resource Wars over the last of non-renewable commodities, namely oil and uranium from 2052 to 2077.
China invades Alaska in the winter of 2066, causing the United States to go to war with China and using Canadian resources to supply their war efforts, despite Canadian complaints. Eventually the United States violently annexes Canada in February 2076 and reclaims Alaska nearly a year later. After years of conflict, on October 23, 2077, a global nuclear war occurs.
It is not known who strikes first, but in less than two hours most major cities are destroyed. The effects of the war do not fade for the next hundred years and as a consequence, human society has collapsed leaving only survivor settlements barely able to eke out a living in the barren wasteland, while a few live through the occurrence in underground fallout shelters known as Vaults.
Coopers's Stories from the Mojave Wasteland There is a strange plague known as '116' that only affects ghouls sweeping through the Mojave wasteland. He'll have to venture out of the relative safety of Zion Canyon, something he's never done before and face the dangers of the wasteland to get his caravan out into the world and find get the cure. But can he manage to stay alive long enough to make this happen?
Great read and was not what I expected and I’m glad it wasn’t. Nothing like the video game but just enough of the game mentioned to say oh yeah I know that character. Highly suggest reading.
This is a Post-Apocalyptic road journal, mostly. The Hero is a trader and has to travel dangerous routes encountering people & creatures as odd as he is. (He is odd to me since he has, like, no nose and finds radiation energizing.) Very interesting, creative portrayals of different pockets of society that have emerged since the nuclear event that brought us to this point. I really like the author's dry style. No wasted words and yet not grim - just plain, sparse, excellent writing. Each character is fleshed out in only a few pages and some even have their own language.
Often this sort of novel is full of nasty violence and can be unnecessarily depressing. Somehow, the author refrained from too many lengthy descriptions of violence, although there are lots of fights and lots of loving descriptions of weapons. (The author loves his guns, that's for sure.) But the overall tone remains calm, the Hero remains a pretty good young man, and there is a feeling of hope as it ends. I expect to see and read more from this particular author. If not for this story line, then just to revel in how good it feels to read well-crafted writing.
I love how this book was playing old songs and I had to look them up on YouTube just so I know what they would sound like😂😂😂 I love the charming ending.
I liked how the story captured essence of the game world. The ghoul perspective was fresh and the environment was well -described. I want to read more!
