40 Voices: A Lenten Devotional

Rate this book
If you knew you were dying soon, would you see the people around you differently? Jesus knew in his last week before the resurrection that the end of his human life neared. He knew exactly how events would unfold. He knew what the voices of the people and places around him would say.

40 Voice – A Lenten Devotional captures the words and settings surrounding Jesus that final week, so we hear them with new insights. Their stories and experiences hold wisdom for us today and show us the transformational power of the cross.

Jesus’ presence in their story predicts his proximity within our story.

Lent offers us a time to deepen our relationship with Jesus and to hear God in new ways. 40 Voices – a Lenten Devotional will give you a fresh look to the sounds from Christ’s journey to the cross and will inspire and enrich our journey through Lent.

Each reading opens with scripture and a thought-provoking reflection and closes with a suggested symbol to observe, a question to ponder, and a prayer to guide your time with God.

Listen to the voices on the way to Calvary and draw closer to Christ.

My wife and I used this book of devotionals for this last Lent season. It covers the 40 days of Lent omitting each Sunday as is traditional. Ms. Wise had some devotionals which were very thought-provoking and unique. However, I cannot wholly recommend this devotional because of the frequent and annoying typos (such as words duplicated or omitted) and misspellings. That broke our concentration on the content while we tried to figure out what she was writing.

Another grievous mistake was not putting any chapter markers or days of the week for each devotion. So if you were not sure if you had read yesterday's devotion or lost your place on which day you were on, you had to manually COUNT from the beginning or end to make sure you were using the correct reading. It would have been so easy to put in a table of contents.

To complicate this further the devotions did not correspond to what happened during the last journey to Jerusalem that Jesus took. This was especially noticeable during Holy Week when the devotions ALL had to do with events that occurred AFTER Jesus’ resurrection. So on Good Friday we were reading about the risen Jesus having breakfast with his disciples on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. It is not what we expected.

We also found little meaning to the “Image” objects you were to gather for the devotion and we soon stopped bothering.

Despite all these faults, some of Ms. Wise's insights were profound but the aggravations about the devotional's faults kept us from fully embracing this little book.

A perfect Lenten devotional

This was a perfect Lenten devotional offering rich spiritual insight. Wise focused on scripture and in a masterful way brought it into the present showing its relevance for today. I appreciated the way in which she attempted to lift up the reader while challenging them in the ways of Christian faithfulness as well. This was one of the best devotionals I have ever read...period.

Beautiful and thoughtful reflections

The reflections were thoughtful and lovely. I found myself looking forward to reading them and drawing nearer to Jesus in the days surrounding his death and resurrection.

Thought provoking daily devotional for lent that gives you an image to go along with reading for pondering throughout the day.
The only negative for me the pages are not numbered.
Glad I purchased this book and I am certain to use it next year as well.

40 Voices is a refreshing new look at Lent with a different perspective sometimes an eye-opening journey that Jesus took interacting with all kinds of people and changing their lives and ours as we walk this journey with him and apply it to our daily life. The image, question, and prayer are a good visual to keep in mind,as well.
I was provided the book by the author in exchange for my honest review.

I love the depth of these devotionals and the varying perspectives of those who were with Jesus during his final days before the crucifixion and resurrection. The suggested images add an extra "grace note" to each day's reading.
