Rate this book
In Travels with Confidential Destinations, travel and style influencer Sofía Sanchez de Betak invites readers on a journey to off-the-radar hideaways and secluded retreats where those in the know seek unforgettable experiences. The truly adventurous are beckoned to unearth hidden gems tucked away in some of the globe’s most sought-after destinations. Partake in the eclectic literary legacy of Naples’s Albergo del Purgatorio, where guests are asked to leave behind a book of their choosing. Enjoy being surrounded by art at the Marco Polo Mansion, owned by a painter whose works in progress adorn the hotel. From the savannahs of Kenya to the glacial bays of Iceland to the soaring mountains of Patagonia, de Betak shares her settings where wildlife and adventure abound, the lines between a hotel and its surroundings are blurred, and visitors are welcomed like old friends. All the senses are awakened, imagining the sound of a rushing river, the smell of baking bread, or the sight of an impossibly clear sky painted with stars. Including must-try dishes and essential souvenirs, Travels with Confidential Destinations details the elements of each haven that should not be missed. With these vibrant, animated stories, travelers will be keen to explore beyond the known and experience the euphoria of cultural immersion and discovery.

I'm sorry to say I found this book incredibly pretentious. It brands itself as a guide to the less explored (and perhaps this is the mistake), when it is really a collection of hotel reviews by an influencer. Many of the hotels don't have the 'insider' view the book promises but rather a price tag that likely excludes most locals. The photos seem taken from her phone and often feature her rather than the places.

Sure, there are some interesting anecdotes and good inspiration for places to travel. Sofia has certainly been to some fascinating places and I think a luxury traveller would likely enjoy the list of hotels on the back alongside details on how to get to the destinations. However, I found the shift in focus back to her and her experience particularly frustrating. I think many travellers would welcome information on the markets or small eateries she says she visited. I also thought that it was insulting to suggest that her 'odysseys' to get to remote destinations in Kenya, Greece or Botswana, often by a long-haul flight followed by a private (or small) plane, are a good representation of how locals in these places live.

A nother book from a "influencer" this time well-connected and priviliged Sofia Betak. However flipping through this book seeing the numerous selfies and grainy mobile pictures. One has to wonder what the pitch was too the publisher??? Dont waste your money people all the same info can be find through travel influencers on instagram. Nothing special here.
