Ren: The Monster's Death

Rate this book
Ren Lewis is the most powerful man in the world and he’s about to prove it.
God, Ren believes, has battled him his entire life, trying to use him as a pawn or punish him for his wrong doings. This man, with powers most can’t fathom, has been content to use his skills to help humanity.

However, when God makes a move that will carve out Ren’s heart for the rest of his life, he makes the decision to finally outmaneuver the Almighty Creator. Using technology, philosophy, quantum physics, psychology and spirituality, Ren attempts to do something that millions of people throughout history have only dreamed of.

Because he’s a strategic man, Ren plans to break God’s laws and be the first human to ever do the unspeakable.

This last installment in the Ren series is the final evolution in a man’s life who thought he never should have been born. Ren’s journey teaches him that not only does he have a heart, but that as powerful as he is, he is nothing without the love in his life.

Ren Lewis will gain the power to hack the system to beat God at his own game, but will he be successful or banished to solitude?

My original Ren: The Monster's Death audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.
This is the final installment in the utterly awesome Ren series. I don’t think it’s necessary to provide a summary of this part. Because this is book 4 you’ll either be familiar with Ren’s story or if not, you really need to start with Ren: The Man Behind the Monster and follow this series in order. It is such a fun but also emotional rollercoaster ride. The entire journey has been a full five-star listen for me, but with this one, Sarah Noffke really has outdone herself. This installment exceeded my expectations. I’ve always enjoyed the humor in these books, but with this final part, Sarah Noffke has created an immensely poignant, affecting and philosophical tale about one man’s refusal to be parted from the love of his life no matter what. Yes, this is a dystopian / fantasy story, which is a genre I don’t tend to pick very often, but I’ve absolutely loved my outing into the world of the Dream Travelers. It is suspenseful, mysterious and magical and delves deeply into topics such as love, loss, hope, commitment and sacrifice. It is such a touching tale, an exciting cross-genre experience, it is easy to enjoy and to take something away from it and become emotionally captivated even for non-fantasy readers/listeners like myself.
When I saw the title, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to handle it considering my ridiculously absurd feelings for Ren, a self-centered, obnoxious and rude man whose sarcasm is out of this world. But Ren has been on a tremendous journey and has grown a lot as is evident from his relationships with his partner Dahlia, with his daughter Adelaide, with his father and his grandson as well as with his boss at the Institute. On a side note, I thought the part of the storyline regarding President Douglas was wicked. Really wonderfully done, Ms Noffke. What a great way to include current concerns! The ending left me sad (because there will be no further Ren books) but also delighted. I am now looking forward to the author’s new book, Alpha Wolf, which will feature Ren’s daughter Adelaide and will further explore the case Ren had started working on. I’m hoping some of the other well-loved characters from the Dream Traveler world will also make an appearance.

Tim Campbell once again narrates this installment, and like the other audiobooks in this series, he completely owns it. He is Ren. There isn’t one thing that I could criticize. Superb performance. One of the saddest things about finishing this series, I will truly miss listening to Tim Campbell/Ren. There were no issues with the audio production.

I love Ren, our snarky, brilliant, complicated protagonist. The author has made me clench my fists in anger, burst out laughing and has even left me weeping like a baby as I traversed the Dream Traveler series on audio. While I bulked at book four, I rallied for book five.

Ren takes on the Almighty as he works to take back what is his. While this might sound religious it isn’t really it is more Ren redefining the rules of death and inevitable separation that occurs when the living lose a loved ones.

Since the beginning we’ve seen through Ren even though he could not make himself vulnerable. The man is a romantic at heart and Noffke did such a splendid job in this last book. Ren is reborn and freed from his own constraints and expectations.

Tim Campbell became the voice of these characters and is brilliant as Ren. He captured their emotions, snark and unique personalities. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

Excerpt from Ren: The Monster's Death

"Everyone dies. Everyone. No account of immortality has ever been documented and yet we continue to fear this certain fate. Humans take every precaution to secure their life but their is no home safe enough. No healthcare plan that can prevent disease. There is no escape. Death is the shadow that follows all of us. And its promise is a real one that it has never failed to deliver."

------------------------------------------------

I'm going to skip my normal summary, as the author summed it up perfectly, and go straight to the review. Let's talk emotions. No one, and I do mean no one can bring emotions like Sarah Noffke. You don't just relate to her characters, you feel them down to your very soul. You laugh with them, you cry with them. They become a part of you. They live through you. Not just her main character, which alone is no easy feat. No, all of her characters. Every single one of them, which is plenty in each book. They are long lost friends in which you eagerly anticipate reading about in the next installment. Even the villains are written so flawlessly, that they too, become favorites.

This book really brought the feels! I thought I knew Ren, but with this final book came an even deeper evolution, that well, you'll just have to read to understand. Sorry you'll never get spoilers *insert evil laugh*. The storyline was executed masterfully, bringing those highs and lows. It also was the perfect set-up for her new series, which is now leaving me in breathless anticipation.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again and again. If it's got "Written by Sarah Noffke" on the cover, I'm reading it. Overall this is probably one of her best books yet, and that is truly saying a lot, since I've loved every one. Each book continues to get better, drawing you in and keeping you there within her world. Turning the last page is always a bittersweet experience. If you haven't read her other books, I very much urge you to check them out.

Last but not least, I wanted to leave this review with powerful words from this book:

"If you don't get over your trauma, if you are forever damaged and react in certain ways because of that, it's because you've made that choice. Life and the way we live it is all about how we think. If I do leave you with any last words then they are to be unconventional. Don't just think outside the box. Throw away the box and think outside a sphere that's constantly morphing. Think so far outside the norm that your ideas startle people. That's when you know you're thinking creatively and the creative mind is the most strategic."

Sarah Noffke never disappoints when it comes to Ren and this is no exception. I mean, come on, who doesn't love the totally prickly, brash guy?! Just when you thought you knew everything about a character, an insanely crazy story pops into an author's head and then makes the reader's mind explode with the sheer brilliant creativity! There are so many incredible elements at play in this book that I can hardly contain myself. While this does hint at death, I'm going to increase my stalking and pestering to ensure that this isn't the last we'll see of the infamous Ren Lewis.

This deserves waaaay more than 5 stars! Just amazing, wow...speechless. If found myself speechless a lot during this book. I assume that if you are reading this you have followed Ren (if not, you must start now!) Ren has always been a snarky, no nonsense, pain in the rear Brit. But we find out that he is truly miserable. He is about to lose all his marbles and is going against the great creator, God. He is determined to turn things around to make things right for himself and the love of his life. Neither can survive without the other. This story is full of surprises. All about second chances and finding great gifts in the midst of tragedy. Death never fails to deliver but can he change this? Change fate? Ren will show you exactly how many layers he has and the pure strength that he has to go the distance for all his loved ones. If you haven't fallen in love with Ren yet, this will surely change your mind. Sarah Noffke has a way with words. She knows exactly how to entertain me but twist my heart around and make it hard to talk for a while :) I was on the edge of my seat constantly trying to figure out the next move. The Ren series is extremely awesome and very unique (haha! Sarah I hope you caught that - Ren thinks that this is simply a waste of words). This is one of my favorite series of all time. But wait til the end....I think there will be a surprise!

"I have received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review!"

I have started this book at 9 pm last night and finished it at 2 am this morning. To say it hooked me is an understatement.
So because of you Ms. Noffke I haven't had my beauty sleep and now I look like a deranged monkey on meth. Although I've asked my husband and he says that I look like my normal Greek Goddess self, I am inclined not to believe him, since he's biased and has ulterior motives. Such as .
Moving on...
If I ever said Ren gave it his all in the previous books just shoot me now, I was wrong. How could I even fathom that he gave it all for something he didn't really care about? No, I was so so so wrong.
Now he gave it all. And I do mean ALL.
He did something that is impossible by any standards.
He blew my mind.
Yep.
He did.
Aside from completely destroying my ever loving mind, this book, and especially the ending, made me suffocate in tears.
You should be put on trial Ms. Noffke, this is no damn book, this is an assassination attempt. My poor poor heart. How do you suppose I live now? You just stand there in your ivory tower and mock us mortals, I just know it. I really know that you get such a big satisfaction out of it. That is sadism, if you didn't know what I was talking about. SADISM
Ok, moving on...
Although I would have loved to give you some more pieces of my mind.
Now, moving on...
I have a hard time letting this go.
No, I will take the higher road. Moving on...
Just move the fuck on....
Ok, now I moved on...
I could go on forever like this. No, I won't do it, I'm not that crazy, or am I?

Now I have to tell what I loved about the book since you seem to think I hated it. No, I didn't hate it, not all of it, just 90% of it. I'm kidding. 89%.
I loved that little brat Lucien and how the little devil got on Ren's nerves. Yeah, I loved him. I also loved Addie and her incessant nagging. And Pops with his infinite patience for his family. And Dahlia with her strong will to live and iron determination. And Trey for overcoming his many problems and still retaining his sense of self. And Trent for listening to Ren and trying his best to fit into shoes too big for him. And Aiden for making the impossible happen with his brilliant mind. And even that fucktard Doug, who reminds me of Trump.
Did I forget anybody?
Oh, yes, and I loved Ren. Why would anybody love that rude, obnoxious, chauvinistic man? WHY?
Well for starters because he is Ren, how could you not? and then because he had absolutely no calms in pursuing a purpose that no other man has ever pursued in the name of love. He achieved the unthinkable and defied every law known to man, God, physics, you name it. And he did it with a ferocity only seen in mama bears defending their cubs. He went ALL in. And he counted right.
How could I deny him my everlasting love? There is no scenario on Earth and the Universe that could make me not love Ren.
And now, I am left devastated because this journey is over. But also hopeful because at the end of every tunnel there is a bright light (well, if you happen during the day, but you get my meaning), we were left with an spin-off for Adelaide's story. And that will be a blast.

So thank you for this extraordinary amazing story of a man who thought himself a Monster but who was truly loved by many and appreciated by all.

P.S. I lied, I don't hate you. I love you. And I loved the book. 100% of it. Just kipping you on your toes.

Appropriate end to an amazing series. Ren Lewis is the perfect anti hero. His harshness and snark end up what making him so endearing. I can’t wait to see what Noffke comes up with next. This definitely leaves an opening for another series.

Perfect ending to the wonderful series. I'm sad to be finished with Ren, this one really brought out my emotions. We see a different side of the genius and I just want to stay with him (and his armchair) forever.

I loved how Ren was intertwined with all the all the Dream Travellers series, so you get snippets of characters from other books throughout Ren's series.

I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

This is the final in the Ren series I am sad to see it end but can I just say the emotional rollercoaster in this one was real. I love Ren and his heart, he has me giggling at times and completely wrecked me at others. I enjoyed seeing a new side to Ren. He is on a mission and he will not be stopped. He is still trying to fix the world but also has his own mission going. The bond between Ren and his family is more than amazing. Even though Ren does not believe he can love with the monster that is in him it still finds a way to peek our every now and then.

The moments Ren has with Adailine, Trey and even Lucin was heartfelt and heartbreaking at the same time. The friend and family bonds are strong.

The ending was great but I really would like to see more of Adailine and see Lucin grow and find his power. So long Ren it was a great run. I do have to ask is this truly the end or is there more to the story?

Incredible Conclusion to the Saga of Ren

Sarah Noffke does it again! Her latest book is amazing! This fourth and final book in the Ren Lewis saga is a gripping story that tells of the final chapter in his tumultuous life. His love affair that goes beyond space and time is the type of love every couple aspires to and often fails to achieve. The physics and overall logic in this book are believable to the point I am beginning to believe Ren and Aiden visited Sarah in her own dream travels to impart their knowledge. I am happiest when exploring the Dream Traveler universe and hope for many more novels. Until then, I will read them all over again! After all, this is the universe that does not end....it goes on and on my friends!

I'm not sure what happened here, in this volume of the Ren Series. But it was a mess, not nearly as put together as the last three books. It felt rushed and barely put together. What's more, I refuse to accept hand-waving, "invent these never before possible things and do it within a week" plot points. And the ending was just ridiculous.

The narrator, however, did a wonderful job with it.

A fitting ending to this wonderful series. And there is more to this book than just Ren saying goodbye. Can he make a deal with god? Or is he forever to be cursed by the god he assumes has never loved him.

A satisfying conclusion that kept me listening to the very end.

The end of the Ren era. It's been a fun ride full of snark, love, twists & turns. And Ren orchestrated every move along the way. Even though the beloved Brit redheads epic journey ends here, I sense that he isn't quite finished with us yet.

This final book in the Ren series exceeds all expectations, it has a soul of its own and will tear you heart out with its poignant beauty. It tells of love, loss, consequences, sacrifice, hope and the search for completeness, it is truly breathtaking. This story is full of surprises, breath holding moments, parts that make you rant and others that bring you to tears. Ren has always been more alive to readers than any other character and I think it is the connections and association with his thought process and feelings (along with his sarcastic humour and snarky personality) that has made him so real. There is so much emotion in this story it is difficult to get it into words. It is a story of loss on so many levels; it is both beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. The emotion and beauty the author infused into Dalia’s dignified decline has a realism to it, it has the feel of a cancer victim who has accepted their lot with poise. The depiction of her slow decline and the gradual wasting of her body puts visuals into the readers mind that makes one actually feel her pain and her slow deterioration. It is both heart breaking and yet it has a quiet beauty to it too. Ren’s “not giving up” talk is tender and pulls at your heart. He is still Ren and puts things in a way that sounds self-centred, his statements blunt, but the sorrow and depth of his caring seeps through while at the same time creating tension as to what he is up to. His interactions with Trent and Trey makes your heart hurt as well, you can feel their depression and loss of confidence and your curiosity grows as to what happened to bring them to this. It leaves you dying to read the story of the Apocalypse.
The goodbyes in this book made me a mess, they are right up there with Rogue’s death in the Reverians Series. At first you cannot believe Ren’s selfishness, he appears so caught up in being with Dalia that he does not consider the hurt his death will inflict on his family and friends, or the consequences the loss of his abilities will have for the Lucidites. Adelaide has only just found her father and is still adjusting to being a Dream Traveller and a mother. The hurt she shows initially breaks your heart and you wonder how he can do this to his daughter. It also gives hints to the reader about new series and of Adelaide’s move to prominence in those books. It is intriguing, but at the same time sad, as we know that Ren can only cameo in future books, and even though his snark will probably show in his words, it will never be as before. The same with his goodbye to Trent and Trey, it felt like he was kicking a dog when it was down. Ren’s ability to compartmentalize his feelings and his apparent disregard actually made me angry. You don’t know whether to love Ren for his love and commitment to Dalia or hate him for his selfishness for leaving. The author captured the sense of love and loss expertly. The goodbye section with Lucien was cute and funny, but also gave the reader hints of how bright and crafty this child is and made you think that he may be a future “Ren” intelligence wise. One wonders if Lucien knew that Ren was planning on leaving and is acting baby like in order to give Ren’s dad purpose. Ren’s dad’s relationship with Lucien is great, the love and tenderness shown is warm and it let us see the love and caring that Ren received as a child. I can understand why he could not tell his dad he was leaving but it broke my heart to think of him finding Ren’s body. I could not imagine the pain caused by my child leaving, never to be seen again, and knowing they chose not to say goodbye. I also loved that last scene with Adelaide, her understanding, selflessness and love for Ren was beautiful. You can feel how she has grown since the last book and see glimpses of the confident, intelligent woman she is becoming. It was heart wrenching, tender and beautiful when Ren finally showed his love for her, it brought tears to my eyes. Like Adelaide, in the end his dad will understand. Ren needs to move on, not only so that he can be with Dalia but to find his completeness, his peace. He knows that his absence will force the people he has touched to evolve too and he has done what he can to set them up to succeed. They have all sacrificed their need for him because they know it is the only way he will find the completeness and peace he deserves, without Dalia he had lost the part of himself that allowed him to feel joy. Their love for Ren is illustrated well in this book, from Aiden helping him without question with the projects, to his family and friends acceptance of his decisions. Even though they know they will lose him, they love him enough to let him go.
“Love is the ability and willingness to allow those that you care for to be what they choose for themselves without any insistence that they satisfy you” - Wayne Dyer
I loved the interpretation the author put on souls and wormholes. Plato’s tripartite soul and immortality theories flow well into this story and adds credence to Ren’s plans. The way the author linked wormholes, dimensions, reincarnation and mind/body/soul was brilliant and definitely made you think. The flickering of the souls through their different lives was a nice touch too, enhancing the feeling of reincarnation while at the same time showing the power of love. My heart was in my throat when Ren found the wormhole into the land of souls, I didn’t want him to enter, as I knew it meant his death, but at the same time I did; I didn’t want to keep reading but I just couldn’t stop. The dichotomy created within the reader between not wanting to loose Ren from the Dream Traveller world and him reuniting with Dalia and at last finding the completeness he deserved is well done. It broke your heart and left you happy at the same time. Ren’s reassembly in the land of souls was heart stopping. You can literally feel his disorientation, and you fear that the Ren we have known will be lost and become something else. His mind/body/soul reconnections were very well written, especially the one with his mom. Getting to do the goodbye he never did as a teen was beautiful and touching, the love felt by both shined through. It is part of what had been missing in his life and in achieving it, he achieved a completeness that allowed him to move on. I loved the spirituality of this story, the combination of love, religions and theories were well done and totally fascinating. This story shows that all losses, even the most heartbreaking ones, are really a means of evolution. Loss forces one to change and grow, even though it may leave footprints on your heart, it gives you the chance to find yourself and in the end you never really loose anyone completely. What they have taught you, be it good or bad, remains with you, as part of you and it will affect your life and the lives of those you touch in one way or another. We grow and change but those who have affected us has influenced how we have grown and thus part of them stays with us. Perhaps people are immortal in some way after all. In Ren, a character was created that became real to the readers, taking on a life of his own and we experienced his love, fear, hope, pain and loss as if it were our own. I’m sure many of us will be left scarred by his death, while at the same time rejoice that he has at last found the happiness and peace he deserved. Sarah Noffke’s ability to draw emotions from a reader and her masterful storytelling that put visuals into one’s mind continues to amaze me and gets better with every book.

This story had me weeping, profusely, at one point!

But, mainly, sometimes with happiness, and other times with loss.

There were so many ideas within this story, that brought back sweet memories for me, and also of loss, and both of these mingled easily, almost seamlessly, with the story I was reading.

This is a beautiful story of loss and redemption, and I wanted so much for it to continue on but, alas, it ended - thankfully, for my tear ducts, on a wonderful ending!

I was absolutely fascinated with the science in this story. Having been introduced to science fiction at an early age, the ideas were familiar to me, although some of it went entirely over my head.

But I didn't mind that, as it fit so well within the story, keeping the plot going at a goodly pace, and helping to 'solve' some of the problems that needed solutions not possible to us, as yet!

I feel sad that this story, too, is now over, although I was happy to see that another Ten story awaits my reading - a bonus content in the box set that I'd bought: Dream Traveler Apocalypse Short Story!

If this is what I think it is, I've actually read about it, but with Rota's point of view, so it'll be fascinating to see how Reb saw it all!

After getting some much needed sleep, I'll start reading this story a little later on (it's now almost 4:30 am here, bin the UK) so, with a brief pause, I'll then see you on the flip side, so that I can tell you if the short story is as good as the rest!

This is the fifth and final book in Sarah Noffke’s Ren series, which is part of her Dream Traveler universe. As always, Ren has a filthy mouth and frequently insults everyone around him, but watch out, because this time he actually expresses some of his most tender emotions.

The plot sometimes challenged my ability to suspend disbelief, but it was quite emotional at times and felt like a fitting ending to Ren’s story. As with previous books in this series, I enjoyed the characterization and the humorous dialog. Ren is so mean sometimes, I’m embarrassed to admit that he makes me laugh and I can’t help cheering for him. It was also very satisfying seeing how much Ren and some of the other characters have grown over the course of this series.

As always, I was captivated by Tim Campbell’s narration. His pacing is good and I enjoy his character voices. The voice and British accent he uses for Ren is perfect for Ren’s arrogance and snarky comments. I definitely recommend the audiobook.

I was given a free copy of this audiobook by the author and volunteered to provide an honest review.

Ren Lewis has evolved so much from the first book. He has found love and will do anything to keep it – forever. It’s life as usual at The Lucidites Institute even though they are still recovering from an apocalyptic event. Ren feels that he has done more than his share to keep the world safe and that it is time to pass the torch. Can he really walk away from his work, his family, and his friends?

Noffke’s fourth and final book in the Ren series, Ren: The Monster's Death, draws to conclusion the story of Ren Lewis. It has been a wonderful ride. Even though he is a character in many of her other books, Ren’s stories will be dearly missed.

This book is shows more than anything else what true love is and what one man will do to keep it alive. I’ve never liked Ren’s lady love, Dahlia, but I’ve never wished her any harm either. What I didn’t realize was the depth to which Ren loved her.

A well-written and edited book by Noffke. A great addition to the Ren collection.

5 out of 5 stars.

A stunning conclusion. The awe-inspiring mix of physics and metaphysics, blending theoretical science with Dream Traveler skills more akin to ancient mysticism. I will warn you that tissues will probably be necessary, they were for me. This book brings Ren full circle, and some of the things he discloses, even some of the things he discovers, have the emotional impact of a speeding bullet train. Ren has always believed he was a god among men and perhaps he truly is.

Only Ren

Only Ren could fight God and win! Great book and a great setup for the next one (that I accidentally read first) Ren is an exceptional character that you want to hate but know he’s good in his heart, flawed but human(ish). I can’t wait to read about the Dream Travelers Apocalypse!

Brilliant...

An exceptional idea written with amazing insight, incredibly dry humour, and a level of wisdom that is astounding. This is a unique story, told in a unique way. Ren's life has truly come full circle, and he has accepted himself completely. The end of an intriguing series. I do hope to see more of Adelaide and Lucien at some stage.

I must admit, the last book was a disappointment. It didn't fit well with the rest of Ren's story, and the very reasons I enjoyed the previous books (humour, Ren's nature) were missing from this book, or felt incredibly forced. It just didn't work for me at all. The first 3 books were pretty awesome though, so I'd still recommend those :)

The Monster's Death (Ren #5) was a great read by Sarah Noffke. Ren is ready to prove that he's the most powerful man in the world. God makes a move to carve Ren's heart out for the rest of his life. He will do his best to outmaneuver God. The is the final part of Ren's evolution. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read more by the author.

Ren: The Monster’s Death (Ren Series #4), the conclusion of the series, my twenty-seventh read from author Sarah Noffke. I’m concluding the series sequentially. A well written, interesting read, with intriguing, well-developed characters. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Ren is a man willing to do the unthinkable as he desperately tries to hold on to the woman he loves. His conclusion is a beautiful, gripping emotion filled one. I honestly couldn’t think of a more perfect way for it to end. Definitely a book I’d recommend.

Wow, what a ride!

The end of Ren Lewis is quite an adventure. This story finishes the lives of Ren and Dahlia in a spectacular fashion. I am hoping the lives of Ren's family and the Institute are found in future books.

This book has filled my heart. I skipped a series because I couldn't wait to read Ren's story and I can say that I have no regrets. He has become my favorite character of all time!

A very spiritual story about Ren. Can I say I blame Ren? Ren is just attempting to deal with the cards he was given.
