Detective Chief Inspector Tim Maybridge's criticism of the crime writers assembled at a weekend seminar provokes the murder of one of the writers, who is found in his bed with a taunting note to the Inspector pinned to the headboard
I haven’t read a book in AGES, so this was a good introductory in restarting my book nerd journey.
I am one who typically leans toward non-fiction, criminal or psychological books. Also, I do not usually read British style language.
All in all, it did take me a few chapters to get hooked, but once the murder took place, I did not want to put it down. Chapter after chapter, another mystery was added to the mix- definitely read the Epilogue.
The situation was an intriguing one, a murder at a seminar for mystery writers. The characterization was good and the writing concise and clear. The mystery/plot was a proper challenge to the reader. This reader, however, was way ahead of the detectives, and the detectives never managed to catch up, even at the end of the story. Instead of a bang of an ending, we get a fizzle-pop-fizzle-fizzle-pop, a damp squid of a denouement.
I liked this murder mystery better than Suspect, a book published earlier by the same author. This book took place at a seminar for crime book authors. Chief Inspector Tom Maybridge is asked to speak to the authors about murders, suicides, and even critiques many authors in their mistakes of crime in their books. Turns out the chairman and head of this crime writer club, Godfrey Grant, dies, and an investigation takes place. There are many twists and turns...is this a murder or suicide? Why was a skewer thrust in Grant after he was dead? Why was a note put by the body intended for Maybridge to read and solve this crime? All of this is figured out, even well after we think all the questions are answered.
One of those mysteries where they spend too much time in the head of the detective and not enough actually solving the case. I can't sympathize or identify with the lead characters so I found it dull. And of course, in the end the case is solved by luck and nothing more. Bleck. I'll not look for any more B. M. Gill novels!
