Rachel is a writer of words, drawer of pictures and champion of silver linings. She exhibits widely, writes tirelessly and frequently creates slightly unhinged characters.

Her written work includes children’s stories and poems, clever advertising copy and lots of other stuff besides. Her illustrative work is a smorgasboard of giant, hand-printed poems, mind-bogglingly detailed gouache illustrations and a cacophony of quirky prints and etchings.

She explores the lovliness of words and the magic of pictures, revelling in a world of jam-eating miniature bears and other made-up animals.

Her work aims to capture a free way of thinking - one which makes you feel anything is possible, a feeling all too easily lost with the end of childhood. When we’re all grown-up, sometimes we just need a little nudge to remember it’s been there all along.

*Rachel has also been an air hostess, a garden designer and a lifeguard. She often runs a really long way and was once invited to the selection of the British ultra running team. She also once won a date with Man of the millennium and has been trying to live it down ever since.

2.5 stars An elderly bear lives with a young squirrel. They live inside a tree in a forest. When winter comes bear catches a cold and has to stay indoors, it starts to snow and Squirrel goes outside to experience this for the first time. Squirrel catches a snowflake and puts it in his pocket to show bear. The snowflake melts and squirrel is sad, the bear reassures the squirrel by telling him that one thing lasts for ever - me and you. The illustrations are nice enough but the story was nothing new.

A bear, named Bear, and a squirrel named Squirrel live together in the forest. One night Bear predicts that there is snow on the way. The next morning they wake to find the ground glistening white.

The two friends want to go and play together in the snow, but Bear is sick, so Squirrel has to go out and play by himself. At first he has fun, as this is the first time he has seen snow, but then he starts to miss his friend.

Squirrel then comes up with an idea to take a snowflake back to Bear. After searching for the perfect one, he eventually finds it and puts it in his pocket, to give to Bear. What Squirrel hadn’t realised though was that snow melts and by the time he gets to Bear there is nothing in his pocket.

Bear tells Squirrel that ‘Snow comes and snow goes, but one thing lasts forever. Me and you’

The Snowflake in my Pocket is a sweet tale of the love and friendship that Bear and Squirrel share. I loved the connection between the two very different animals.
Bear is very wise as he has lived on the earth for a long time and seen and done lots of things, where Squirrel is young and is witnessing things for the first time.

The book is appealing, and colourfully illustrated. With the wintry weather fast approaching this book will make the prefect bedtime story.

A lovely story of the friendship of Bear and Squirrel that live together. We loved reading this book during the recent snow, especially as my daughter also got quite upset that her snowflakes melted! Really lovely illustrations that show the characters emotion really well. It can often be quite hard to find a book that covers wintery weather without referring heavily to Christmas.

"Snowflake in My Pocket" is a heartwarming tale that beautifully captures the magic of friendship, the wonder of nature, and the importance of cherishing simple moments. Rachel Bright’s lyrical storytelling pairs perfectly with Yu Rong’s stunning illustrations, creating an enchanting experience for readers of all ages.

The story of the little squirrel and the wise bear resonates deeply, reminding us of the beauty in change and the joy of shared experiences. The themes of love, compassion, and embracing the present make it a perfect bedtime read, especially during winter.

The artwork is exquisite, with intricate details that bring the snowy world to life, making each page a visual delight. My child was mesmerized by the illustrations and captivated by the gentle, poetic narrative.

This book is not just a story but a cozy hug in literary form. Highly recommended for families to share magical reading moments together!

A heart warming story of friendship between a wise old bear and a young excited squirrel. When Autumn changes to Winter, Squirrel can't wait for the snow that Bear knows comes every year. But, when Bear gets sick, Squirrel learns a valuable lesson that having fun alone is never the same as having fun with your friends.

Well illustrated with a warm feeling throughout, I read this to a Year 1 class after a cold morning at Forest school and it made for a calm and nice end to the day.

A perfect "winter read" to warm the hearts and minds of listeners of all ages! The intricate illustrations--including a captivating two-page spread set in the moonlight--enhance the story's text. Readers/listeners are likely to connect with Bear and Squirrel's winter adventures, and the promise of enduring friendship (with or without snow) is a comforting conclusion.

I was sent a free copy of this book by the publisher Walker Books.

Bear and Squirrel live in a twisted old oak tree. Squirrel has never seen the snow, but Bear knows it is coming. When it arrives squirrel hopes to share it with Bear.

This is such a lovely and sweet story. Bear and Squirrel love to spend time together in the forest. When the snow starts to fall Squirrel is super excited and can't wait to share his first experience of snow with Bear, but Bear gets ill and can't go outside... I can't say more or I'll give away the ending, but it is a fun story which really warmed my heart. The story has a lovely tale of friendship. Bear and Squirrel live together so they are like family so the bond they share feels even stronger. Squirrel is like a child and Bear is like his parent.

The illustrations in this book are really lovely. Not only are they clear and sweet but I love the way some images look like simple pencilled drawings. I also love a clever trick visual half way through the book using a window. The book is wider and a little shorter than A4 size and each page is colourful and glossy. The cover of the book has a lovely effect when you tip it against the light, it shines, showing up the snowflakes as extra shiny and there are extra snowflakes visible on the back to the light.

I really love the story in this book and I think it would make the perfect picture book for Christmas.

This gave me the best warm fuzzies. It's such an adorable book and perfectly timed for a little winter read.

This tells the tale of a squirrel and a bear who are the best of friends. Squirrel is learning all kinds of things from bear at the moment, but most notably he is waiting for the snow that bear promises is just around the corner. He stays up late watching the sky for that very first snowflake. But of course he drifts off to sleep and awakes to a whole forest of snow. He is determined to catch a special snowflake just for his friend and so sets off to do just that whilst bear stays inside.

The illustrations, the lovely narrative and all the warmth of this story just makes it the perfect picture book for young readers. There's a mixture of illustrations throughout, from simple line drawings to more complex ones. I also love the abundance of colours throughout but most especially, I think the little interactive parts of the pages (such as a little hole to act as a window out to the snow) was really cute and well thought out.

I definitely would recommend this book for people looking for something for a young audience - it's adorable, and the adults will love it too.

This product was provided to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This did not influence my opinion of the product.
