Pamela Ribon is a screenwriter (Moana, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Bears), performer, TV writer, comic book writer, best-selling novelist, and a Film Independent Directing Lab Fellow.

She is currently adapting her original comic book series SLAM! — co-created with Veronica Fish — as an animated half-hour with Rooster Teeth and Minnow Mountain for HBO Max. She is attached to direct (with Paul Franklin) her live-action feature adaptation of her critically-acclaimed graphic novel My Boyfriend is a Bear (co-created with Cat Farris). She is also adapting her comedic memoir NOTES TO BOYS (AND OTHER THINGS I SHOULDN’T SHARE IN PUBLIC) as an animated series for FX’s CAKE.

Pamela was a flagship contributor to Television Without Pity, and is known as a pioneer in the blogging world with pamie.com, where she launched such viral essays as “How I Might Have Just Become the Newest Urban Legend” and “Barbie Fucks it Up Again,” the latter of which led to #FeministHackerBarbie, a revamp of Mattel’s products and marketing for Barbie, and the creation of Game Developer Barbie as “Career of the Year.” Pamela’s stage work has been showcased at the HBO US Comedy Arts Festival and she created the accidental international scandal known as Call Us Crazy: The Anne Heche Monologues.

A former Austinite with a BFA in Acting from the University of Texas, Pamela has been entered into the Oxford English Dictionary under “muffin top.” That is not a joke. @pamelaribon | she/her

This is the best issue yet! I love that they take a moment to break down the basics of Derby for you. The relationship redemption in this one is beautiful.

DAMN! That’s one way to end a comic issue. It was tough seeing their friendship go through a rough patch and for this issue to end the way that it did, but hopefully CanCan and Knockout can salvage their friendship.
I also really like how much information was given about the actual sport of roller derby.

Thoughts On: Slam! 4

1. The cover is glorious and badass. I would hang a poster of this cover on my wall if I could.

2. Thank you, Pamela Ribon, for explaining the rules of roller derby in a fun and interesting way before I would be forced to Google it. I've seen Whip It a few times, but it's been a while.

3. I love the split screen panels of Jen and Maisie discussing their crumbling friendship with their respective teammates. It's very cinematic.

4. Kristen is adorable, and I agree with her. They do have weird rules about being nice.

5. Jen's parents showing up at the derby match and being slightly surprised about how serious her hobby is. I love how awkward it is because I have lived this moment. Bonus: There are cupcakes for sale at the derby. Yes!

6. Jen still compliments her friend even when she's mad at her. They need to make up right now because I cannot take much more than this.

7. Okay, Jen's parents are officially into derby now. I couldn't stop laughing at her mom screaming, "Get up! Get up and kill her!"

8. God, the art is so good. Sometimes I just want to marvel at it.

9. Jen and Maisie are back together, and it is truly beautiful. "She needs me. And I need her."

10. "I'm really sorry." "There's no sorry in roller derby. Now shut up and keep being my hero."

I want more! A possible reunion between K.O and Can-Can would make my dreams come true. I want to watch a derby match so bad. I'm so sad this is the last issue and it got discontinued but I'm looking forward to starting the mini-series ASAP.

I always have fun reading this title. I like the art. I like the story pacing. I wish I could see a bit more of the scenes that go on in the gaps of what we're told, I think it also adds to the surprise when two characters who were rivals are suddenly mending that. In other comics I find shifts like that annoying, but here it's charming.

Hey Veronica Fish, that's one nice cover.

Last issue had Cancan and Knockout stop being friends :( so I super hoped they made up this issue, and they kinda did, albeit at the expense of Cancan being injured.

I liked that they had an intro to roller derby at the start of this issue, because I honestly don't know a whole lot about it and it definitely made it feel more inclusive for someone like me who doesn't know their stuff.

The opposing panels of them talking to other members of their team about the dissolution of their friendship made me really sad but was such a good layout for this; to see their pain paralleled was just honestly really touching. This coupled with the last panel where Cancan calls Knockout her hero was so so cute!

I think this is my favourite issue to date because we had a really good balance of roller derby and the friendship between the two mains.

Take one teaspoon of football, add a dash of hockey, throw in a big ol' cup of kicking butt and you've got just a taste of roller derby.

Look at that cute couple in the left corner awwh

This was by far the best one yet. I just have to say that there is something about the color palette that this comic uses that I find very stunning to look at. It all blends together so well.

Just in general I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this series up until this point. I didn't know anything about roller derby and now I know a thing or two. Also all these supporting moms during the matches were absolutely endearing.
