"I read all the time. Usually, by the fifth chapter I know where the story is going. War Drum kept me guessing until the final chapters, and the ending totally wowed me!"
She has everything she's ever sacrificed, prayed, and killed for: power, wealth, and especially love. With the only obstacle to her reign finally removed, Naamah anticipates her upcoming marriage to Prince Raheil, and a new dawn for her people. No one will ever go hungry again as Raheil has promised to make Eridu the wealthiest and most glorious city in all the world. Naamah knows he has the power to do it because she's seen him bend time, bring back the dead, and defeat the strongest enemy. But what if changes his mind? And why has he allowed a monster to roam the streets of her city at night, devouring innocent victims? Naamah's worst fear is that the being she pledged herself to for all of eternity, might be turning against her.
I had the privilege a while back to be a beta reader of this book and I loved it. I enjoyed how Ms. Witenhafer mixed historical elements with fantasy/speculative fiction and delivered an incredible story.
I was drawn into the story almost immediately. I read several books a week and many are quickly forgotten because the plot and characters aren't memorable. War Drum definitely doesn't fall into this category. The main character, Naamah, is strong, beautiful, and conflicted. The plot is intense. The antagonist is evil. And the resolution is amazing. This book is worth reading multiple times.
