Beautiful story with interesting characters and all-time subjects. Like abuse, love, mourning. The different viewpoints throughout the story makes that you see the things from all sides. Which makes it come even more alive. I can't wait to read the stories of Emily's siblings! I received a copy through Booksprout and chose to review it.
I'm giving four stars for this story, but I have reservations. The image on the cover is more Victorian than Regency and I was surprised when I read the blurb again and discovered it was set in the Regency period. There was nothing really to indicate that time era; in fact they ate dinner in the evening, when in actual fact they would have eaten at about 1-2pm with supper later in the evening. But the story was very short and more detail would have enhanced the narrative. It didn't hold many surprises for me and the outcome was inevitable. I noticed a lot of phrases were repeated, sometimes on the same page. And I smiled when I read 'slow ton wall'. Of course it's low stone wall. You must be wondering why I've given four stars after the comments above? It's simply because I really liked the characters.
It's a very quick, fairly sweet read. I can't call it light because the abuse of one's romantic partner is an abomination, especially when the one being abused has no recourse to escape. I didn't feel like there was quite enough story for me to fully connect with the characters. The ending is as expected; the only way for Lady Emily to escape and keep her good reputation. It's well written and a good escape for an hour or so.
A nice clean romantic story. Poor Emily married a terrible husband who beat and berated his wife. Since divorce was not open to her she had little to hope of ever getting away from her terrifying husband. The story is a bit predictable, but in the end the story has a happy outcome.
In the beginning, this was an engaging romance and it was good to read, but as it progressed it just became the cliche of all romances. Also, the way that it managed to get Thomas to meet Emily was unrealistic, to say the least. So, although I did like a few of the characters, the overall plot compels me to say that I did not like it.
Great story. Emily’s father had died and she was home with the family. Of all her brothers and sisters, she was the only one married. She had married a man who seemed loving and caring in the beginning but was now cruel and abusive to Emily. Find out how Emily escape this nightmare, enjoy reading this story
This easy-to-read Regency romance maintained my attention throughout. It dealt with spousal abuse which had few choices of escape back in the time. It was predictable, and the romance somewhat speedy between Emily and her rescuer, but enjoyed the novel just the same. Recommended for anyone who enjoys this era and genre.
Their father dies and all are home for the funeral. Emily finds comfort with her family away from her abusive husband. She asks for help from her eldest brother, but he is reluctant to aid her. But his friend Thomas offers to see what is going on.
