After being trapped inside his own body, unable to communicate with anyone but his own thoughts, Andy Rosetti finally wakes up from the coma that controlled his life for one month. But upon awakening, Andy finds himself and his friends in an unfamiliar setting: a mansion riddled with secrets and supernatural forces. As his friends fall prey to the entities encompassing them, Andy must figure out if the darkness lies within the mansion’s walls or within the people surrounding him.

The Forces Within is a story that explores the power of spirituality and the battle that many teenagers go through when faced with tough decisions. The story focuses on life after Andy Rossetti wakes up from his coma and what his recovery process looks like, including the recovery that those closest to him must go through as well.
The Forces Within begins in Fallen Lake, a small New England town, where Leslie’s family owns a Mansion. A group of friends decide to go there for a weekend, but as soon as their trip begins, it is apparent that supernatural forces are at work. The story allows the reader to better understand the characters that they met in the previous MLH books and reveals the truth in who each person really is.
I recommend The Forces Within to all teenagers, especially those who are currently struggling with identity and social pressures. It would be useful to read the other books in the MLH series before reading The Forces Within to fully understand the characters and their relationships to one another. The story is filled with suspense and drama, something that kept me glued to each page. High school is a time for teenagers to discover themselves and this story does a great job of describing some difficulties that are very relatable, and how to get through those daunting situations.
The Forces Within is the 5th book in a series that follows a group of teenagers on their journey through high school, with lessons about faith and temptation. In the 5th and final book, this message is made more clearly than ever before. The teenagers end up in a seemingly haunted mansion where everything is going wrong. People are acting strangely, having nightmares, and even going missing. As the teens try desperately to find out what is going on in this place, they realize that this mansion is haunted with normal ghosts, but with Satan's temptations. As the MLH characters desperately search to find out what is going on and why some of their friends are safe while others are having a horrible time in the mansion, many things are revealed. This book then goes on to show the dangers of spiritual warfare and how the teens who lived a life in the image of God were safe and happy in this house, while the others were haunted and tormented by demons. This haunting was a result of Satan trying to tempt them and take control of their lives. I love how this book made learning about this spiritual battle so interesting and easy to read. Author Stacy Padula used the haunted mansion with all of its secret passageways and hidden rooms as an extremely interesting and mysterious medium through which to tell an important story about spiritual warfare. Personally, I had not heard of this type of spiritual struggle and it was revealed in a way that made it interesting and important in my mind. It is revealed later that the time spent in this mansion was a dream of character Andy's. This dream happened while he was in a coma for a month and when he woke up to his real life, the parallels between his dream and what had been happening in his real life were uncanny. His realization that this war going on for people's spirits was a real threat and he began to wonder how it would affect his life when he woke up. Not only does this book provide valuable lessons about faith and how Satan's temptations can wreak such havoc in this world, but it also kept me eagerly turning every page as the characters attempted to solve the mystery of the Fallen Lake mansion.
A trip to Fallen Lake takes an unusual twist when Andy Rosetti and his closest friends end up in an old spooky mansion. The students quickly discover that dark forces are present throughout the house, and discerning illusion from reality becomes increasingly hard to do.
Suspenseful and filled with unexpected turns, The Forces Within will keep readers guessing until the very end. This book not only gives insight into the true identity of some of the Montgomery characters, but causes readers to question what is true in their own lives.
I would recommend this book to all high schoolers. Not only is it a page turner but it forces the audience to really think. Topics such as social status, temptation, and identity are all prevalent in this book and are important for high schoolers to think about. This book also offers the message that prayer and devotion to God are the most comforting defenses a person can have as they go through various battles in life--a lesson that will serve students both in school and during the rest of their lives.
The Forces Within, by Stacy Padula, is the fifth and most compelling book in the MLH series. The story focuses on the spiritual battle of several characters in the series, but mainly dissects the actions of Andy Rosetti. Andy finds himself in a strange place called Fallen Lake, in an even stranger house. He is surrounded by his friends but they all seem to take on different roles than he remembers before his accident. After Andy finally wakes up from this alternate reality, he struggles to decipher what the events at Fallen Lake mean. While Andy battles to find peace, other characters in the story also grapple with their relationships, including their relationship to God. Both Chantal and Katherine look for guidance in trying to give their life up to God and surrender to his will. They look for signs from God to guide them in their lives. Metaphors first mask and then reveal a deeper meaning to many of the characters’ life questions. The Forces Within is a book unlike any other in the MLH series that is essential and relevant to almost anyone willing to look beneath the surface. The story is full of examples that show how our relationship with God, or lack thereof, is evident in everyday life. The Forces Within shows how the teens in the story are able to analyze the signs and make adjustments to their life accordingly. Finally, the book demonstrates how effective spiritual warfare can be in helping to guide friends from darkness to light.
Have you ever awoken from a dream (nightmare seems more fitting, actually) in cold sweat, fighting the shortness of breath, and struggling to decipher foe from reality? Imagine being stuck in that parallel world for a month straight--now that’s a nightmare. Facing nothing other than his inner self, Andy Rosetti experiences a spiritual awakening during his coma. Andy’s battle was physical on the outside, yet spiritual on the inside, something that remained upon his awakening. Andy recognized the darkness around him, something that he had so long tried to ignore through appeasement. The “boy who had it all,” really had nothing--without God that is.
Everyone has the capability to shine in the light, but the darkness is so consuming, convincing even the strongest willed that they are unsalvageable. Filling a void is near impossible, remaining empty until the light fills in the gap, like drawing the drapes in a grand hall. Andy felt as though he fit in everywhere and nowhere at the same time. His insecurity in his faith had prevented God from working within his life, leaving him stuck between darkness and light, an exhausting and viscous cycle on his soul. Spiritual illumination sheds light in one’s soul, restoring faith, hope, and love. Chantal, Andy’s long-term girlfriend, was always radiant, in her beauty of course, but mainly in her spirituality. She was Andy’s push, his reminder of hope and restoration of strength to accept God and his purpose.
Attaining illumination takes strength, and pushes you out of your comfort zone--something that most high school freshmen struggle to overcome. Fleeing temptation and emerging from darkness means allowing yourself to become vulnerable, relinquishing the grip you hold on your own life, and transferring that power to God’s will. The reward is God’s love, strength, and protection. Eternal happiness and peace is on the other side of the road, you just have to be brave enough to cross it. Andy, Chantal, Chris, Bryan, Jon, Jason, Katherine, Lisa, Leslie, Bobby, and the rest of MLH have access to the same road, but who is brave enough to cross to the other side? Who will make it half way and cower? Who will be hit along the way? Read The Forces Within to find out!
In “The Forces Within” by Stacy Padula, events in Montgomery Lake take a long-awaited turn: Andy Rosetti wakes up from his coma. After spending a month trapped within his own body, Andy is faced with a unique set of challenges in another unfamiliar setting - Fallen Lake. As soon as the group enters the mansion, it is evident that there are larger forces at work. Much like Andy’s life in Montgomery Lake, he is forced to make difficult choices and truly think about the people in his life during his time at Fallen Lake. Andy must rely on his own instincts and be able to trust himself, bringing up a message that Padula has woven throughout “The Forces Within”: identity. Unable to trust those around him, Andy must come to terms with and understand himself in order to navigate Fallen Lake. In this book, the students of Montgomery Lake High come to learn much about both themselves and each other. An engaging page-turner, the latest book in the Montgomery Lake High series does not disappoint. Even as the story unfolds in a mansion consumed by supernatural forces, this book presents very relatable and real issues in an approachable way. Much like the teens in Montgomery Lake, teenagers today are often plagued by social pressures and struggle to discover who they really are.
This is a story about a high school kid named Andy Rosettie who is stuck in a dream world while he is in a coma. When he wakes up, he is confused by what is real and what isn’t.
He comes to realize that what happened in the dream was more real than he wanted to admit because it was showing him the spiritual battles that everyone, including himself, were going through in the real world.
I think this book should be called book number four of the“Montgomery Life High Series.” I’m not sure I would have understood the relationships of all the people without reading the other three first. But I really enjoyed the story and the Biblical teachings in it.
One of the main points I got out of the book is a lot of people claim to know Jesus Christ as their Savior, but never give their hearts to Him. Therefore, they have never known a personal relationship with God and have never received God’s Holy Spirit. Then there are some who have, but they have temporarily walked away from the faith. So the outside appearance can be deceiving.
The spiritual war for our lives never stops. And those who have not received God’s Holy Spirit by grace through faith are truly deceived.
Overall, I loved the book and strongly recommend it.
“The Forces Within” which is the last in the MLH series by Stacy Padula, goes deeper into what truly happened to Andy Rosetti. In this story, the reader gets to understand what went on inside Andy’s head while he was in the coma. As Andy wakes up, he is faced with reality once again and important realizations are made. Surrounded by his family, friends, and his girlfriend Chantal, he can only help but think about what his dream at Fallen Lake meant. In this book, the struggles of different characters are explored deeper and many relationships are put into question as well as get tested, but an important one to highlight was the characters’ relationship with God. Andy’s realizations have made him understand that he wasn’t dedicated enough to God and that it was a change that needed to be made in his life, almost like a second chance. “The Forces Within” gives great examples on how some of God’s work is disguised in ways that need to be figured out and explored deeper. This book is a great read for someone who may be figuring themselves out or looking for a sign to grow closer with God.
I really enjoyed reading “The Forces Within” by Stacy Padula. The start of the book seems a little confused—but that is by design. The confusion sets the stage for the story. Ms. Padula weaves together the natural and spiritual worlds in a very skillful manner.
The story is action packed, entertaining, and extremely thought provoking. There were more twists and turns than a labyrinth, yet through the story is a clear thread tying it all together.
Stacy Padula has addressed very real issues facing teens and adults alike in both the physical and spiritual realms. She brings social issues like peer pressure, cliques, substance abuse, and sex into perspective—and supplies the answer.
Overall, the book is well written. It was a page-turner that I could not put down. One of the best books I’ve read in several years. I would say that this book is a “must read” –especially for fans of Frank Peretti. I dare say that Stacy Padulla has taken the baton of the spiritual realm books from Mr. Peretti and is running with it.
“The Forces Within” by Stacy Padula is full of twists and turns as well as unexpected endings. It is the perfect read for someone that loves mystery or plot twists. The story is based on a group of teens who find themselves in an unfamiliar house while one of their friends is lost in what seems to be the vast woods. As their journey to find their friend begins, they also try to find themselves as well. Dealing with internal struggles as well relationship problems, this book is filled with everything interesting. I loved the book due to the fact that the struggles in the book are so relatable and true. Its a great read especially for teens and young adults. I reccomend this to anyone who is looking for a mysterious yet dramatic book. samantha waxman
“The Forces Within,” the last book in the Montgomery Lake High book series, is a thrilling novel with hidden messages of the spiritual warfare which takes place all around us daily. I, personally, could barely put it down- it kept me captivated until the very last page.
This book takes place, for the most part, during Andy’s dream as he is in a coma. In this dream, he, Chantal, and a few of their friends are chased through the woods and have no choice but to hide in a mansion. This is no average mansion, they soon find out, many secrets and mysterious events take place while they are there which may change Andy forever.
The Forces Within by Stacy Padula tells the story of an adventure gone wrong. This book is about a group of teens, just looking to explore their friends summer house and unfortunately getting caught in something much more. The reader learns so much more about characters they thought they knew, and gets a very deep insight into their childhoods. My favorite part of this book was the obviously powerful story coming through in a very entertaining way. I just couldn't put it down!
A thrilling page turner for sure! This is a bit longer than the other MLH books but it flies by because it is so entertaining. I love mysteries and the twist in the middle was eye opening. Couldn't recommend it more! Great for teens or people who like mysteries and thrillers. If you can handle reading about demons, you can handle this book. Otherwise it might creep you out! I loved it!
This book is freaky! But in a good way. It's an adventure that turns into a thriller... but then there's a layer of paranormal activity. I think someone could read this without reading the other books first if they had an interest in mysteries or paranormal fiction.
“MLH 5: the forces within” is the grand finale of the MLH series. This addition to the series takes on a completely new style that Stacy Padula somehow seamlessly weaves into the narrative she has previously established.
The novel is broken into two parts. The first part being the dream world Andy has been living in during his coma. The second part is the ever-changing reality that Andy now has to face after his trauma. In the dream world, Andy is experiencing a totally twisted reality, that somehow gives insight into the changes happening in the outside world. While at the haunted house in the woods, new couples begin emerging, true intentions start being revealed, and most importantly, faith is truly tested. But where is the line between dream and reality and why does it seem to blur with every passing day out in the woods? Is this dream really a metaphor for how life has changed while Andy was gone?
When Andy returns to his everyday life, he struggles with his relationships, including that with Chantal. But, even with the blending of social circles and the uncertainty of where each character belongs, ultimately faith brings them all to where they are meant to be. Whether it’s Andy discovering his false view of God and desire to be close to him for his own needs or Kathryn breaking away from those she knows best to be with people who bring her the comfort her heart desires.
It’s impossible to read this series and not reflect on yourself, and with that, the beliefs and faith you do or do not hold. For anybody at any pivotal moment in their lives, but specifically young minds finding their way in the world, Padula offers an entertaining and informative series that should not be overlooked. It’s rare that faith is talked about so openly and received by so many levels of the social spectrum in high school. The reality on the nonbelievers or followers of different faiths are present, but there is no shame or judgement, just the desire for every character to find their purpose.

In “The Forces Within” by Stacy A. Padula, Andy Rosetti is thrust back into the world after his tragic accident, and is forced to confront this very question. The lines between reality and imagination are blurred after supernatural forces and dark secrets conquered his mind for a month, with nowhere else to turn.
Andy’s dreams while in a coma were vivid, and as he begins to decipher what is true and what was just part of his imagination. Revisiting his experiences, he begins to realize that there may not be too much separation between the two seemingly conflicting stories as he initially thought.
Padula skillfully weaves together themes of faith and salvation through the events of Andy’s integration back into the waking world. At the start of the novel, readers are taken on an exhilarating journey within Andy's mind, which mirrors the battle of the spiritual realm, and the conflict in all of the characters’ hearts.
Many of the characters in the story have a darkness within them, leading to the need for redemption by Jesus. Some come to the realization that they need to change their way of life, while others are still far from this encounter with God. But there is one thing guaranteed: there is at least one character’s standing that every reader can see themselves in, whether they be saved, backslidden, or still living for the pleasures of the world.
It’s hard to think of a specific person who could benefit from this book. “The Forces Within” combines adventure, supernatural elements, and profound lessons and themes. So whether you are looking for a story of redemption, a great adventure, or just an enjoyable and easy read, this book has it all within its two covers, bringing the Montgomery Lake High series to a satisfying conclusion.
“Montgomery Lake High Book 5: The Forces Within” takes the series in a new direction, dividing the book into two parts. The first part takes place in an entirely new setting, introducing physical manifestations of spiritual warfare while leaving the readers in the dark just enough to question the reality of the situation. It quickly becomes apparent that regardless of whether the experience is “real” or not, the metaphors behind it definitely are.
The readers are then taken back into the reality they are familiar with, and are left to ponder just how much of the first part of the book directly relates to the characters during the second half. Essentially, the different format invites the readers to focus on the events from the first half and use that knowledge to question the spiritual validity of characters later on. It quickly becomes apparent which characters are on which side as the world from the first half becomes more and more intrinsic with the world in the second half.
This book (and series as a whole) provides an interesting conversation for teenagers about spiritual warfare. This book in particular uses physical imagery as a prop to help its audience easily understand its message while simultaneously illustrating a terrifying real-life situation that will keep its readers in anticipation. As mentioned in a previous review, I recommend reading the “Gripped” series as well, which serves as both a prequel and a sequel to this one. While this series ends with a bang, these characters’ lives aren’t finished. We are left with a feeling of hope and the knowledge that their lives will continue on, albeit as changed people.
The novel The Forces Within, by Stacy A. Padula, is a thrilling novel about looking inward and discovering what’s really important in life. It focuses on Montgomery Lake High student Andy Rosetti, who finally reemerges from being in a coma for a month. But little does he know, a lot has changed since the day of his accident and things are no longer what they once seemed to be. This captivating and mysterious story does a deep dive into the darkness inside of Andy and his friends, starting many of them down a path of self-discovery and faith. Through betrayals and new relationships, the kids must persevere to make it to the light so they can finally be happy and able to live their lives to the fullest. The intensely realistic characters draw the reader in and make them feel as though they’re running right alongside the kids as they dash through the haunted mansion they find themselves trapped in or crying from desperation as they frantically try to save their relationships that are starting to slip away due to rumors and lies. This, combined with engaging and talented writing, makes this book a must-read for everyone who finds themself in a moral, religious, or emotional conflict in which they need guidance.
The Battle for Innocence by Stacy Padula is an incredible story that many will benefit from reading. I would most recommend this book to young adults and teens who are seeking advice regarding drugs, alcohol, friends, and religion. There are so many storylines and characters in this book and the whole series that every reader will be able to find at least one character they can relate to in some way and look to for advice. This book also touches on the difficulties of seeing a friend face medical issues that can be a very important lesson for teens and young adults.
Many characters are beginning to see how amazing it is to turn to God and how helpful he is in all aspects of life. The characters enter a spooky mansion that is filled with spirits which leads to many story changes. By reading the book you can see what happens and how each of the characters continues to face the challenges they have already been facing and the new ones that will cause tension.
