At age fifteen, Jason Davids appears to have it all: high grades, popular friends, a beautiful girlfriend, and nearly any worldly thing that promises enjoyment at his disposal. Despite this, there is a persistent emptiness inside his heart. After failing to fill the void with achievements, relationships, and illicit substances, Jason finds himself intrigued by Jessie: a rather quiet girl, who is the daughter of a local pastor. How is it possible that she stands for everything his lifestyle opposes yet possesses the one thing he has been searching for all along?

In “The Aftermath” by Stacy Padula, the reader is taken back to Montgomery Lake in the wake of the tragic storm that shook the close-knit town and left Andy Rosetti in a coma, fighting for his life. The focus is brought to popular high school freshman Jason Davids as he struggles to process what has happened. Seeing the world from Jason’s perspective, the reader gains valuable insights into his struggles, now amplified by the guilt and confusion he feels following Andy’s accident. Jason makes the difficult decision to change his partying ways, but soon realizes that it will be a long and challenging road. Like many teens, Jason is faced with many temptations along the way and must find the strength to continue on his new path. While this book is universal in its themes, I would recommend it to high schoolers in particular. Like Jason, teens everyday are faced with difficult choices and with the reality that the right decision may not always be the easiest. The topics of popularity and faith are all things that are very present in the lives of high schoolers, and teens can learn a lot from seeing how Jason navigates those same issues.
It has been three weeks since a terrible storm left Andy in a coma, and for Jason Davids, nothing has been the same. Jason, the most popular freshman boy at Montgomery Lake High School, recognizes that he needs to make a change in life and give up the partying lifestyle he has been a part of for the past two years. Jason discovers this task is not going to be easy and struggles to turn away from darkness, as he is constantly presented with new temptations. Jason must decide whether to go back into the daze he has been living in or look for a new source of strength to help him win his battle over his addictions.
I would recommend this book to anyone in middle school or high school, as it touches on topics very prevalent to this age group: temptation, gossip, popularity, and prayer. It reminds readers that one's reputation in high school will be insignificant to the rest of our lives, and that, therefore, people should focus on more important matters such as their relationship with God.
Everyday teenagers are faced with difficult situations that constantly question their faith and moral compass. The Aftermath by Stacy Padula follows a group of students from Montgomery Lake High School, specifically Jason Davids who has a plethora of misconceptions about God and struggles to discover who he is in a world that has already answered that question for him.
The Aftermath is written from the perspective of Jason, allowing the reader to explore his thoughts and feelings in a very detailed manner. The story begins where the last book ended and deals with the events that follow the destructive tornado that touched down in Montgomery leaving one of Jason’s classmates, Andy, in a coma. Jason’s life is forever changed by this accident and the story follows his journey of redemption to deal with the guilt that he feels for leaving Andy helpless in a hospital room.
I recommend The Aftermath to all teenagers, especially those who are currently or have in the past dealt with difficult times or struggled with drugs or alcohol. It is not necessary to read the other books in the MLH series to understand the story. It is very inspiring to read about a teenager that everyone can relate to who deals with societal and personal issues on their path to find God.
The Aftermath, by Stacy Padula, is an exceptional book that continues to follow the lives and challenges of a group of teens at Montgomery Lake High. The teens embody many different lifestyles, challenging each other to find their voice against the many vices that high school social life offers. The characters find a common thread in rallying around a critically injured friend, causing them to interact in ways that normally would not happen. These interactions with people outside their usual social circle is intriguing, sometimes confusing and eventually rewarding. The teens in the book face challenges such as peer pressure and bullying. The book follows Jason, who is the central character in this installment of the MLH series, through various difficult situations. Jason faces peer pressure from his brothers and classmates to continue on his destructive path of alcohol and drug use. An unlikely friend, Jessie, is the incentive that helps him escape this disastrous lifestyle. Jason is able to take himself from nearly being hospitalized from drug and alcohol use to being confident enough to refuse repeated offers to use drugs. His strength comes from friends who, each in their own way, help him find his faith in God. The Aftermath is a fascinating story about how important it is to have faith and surround yourself with the right people. While Jason has to ultimately make his own decision to turn his life around, it would not be possible without the right friends. Teens who read this can see what an impact our words and actions can have on another person’s life. Behaving badly can harm those around you, while helping a friend see that there is always hope can save their life. The Aftermath is an inspirational book that I would highly recommend, exemplifying how we can impact others positively by helping them find their faith.
After Andy’s devastating accident, Jason realizes that he needs to reevaluate the direction of his life. The shadow he was engulfed in blinding him from an unfulfilling lifestyle quickly dissipated after a tragedy in his life. Although the drugs, alcohol, and social life that Jason has seemed to be enough to sustain his happiness, he begins to realize that these things are merely temporary fixes. Throughout the book, Jason wrestles with the allure of the world versus the truth of God, providing insight into the struggle faced by youth when choosing the right path in their daily lives. Stacy A. Padula’s third installment in the Montgomery Lake High series, titled “The Aftermath,” is the most captivating one yet. The characters continue to develop and come to life as the series progresses, and the lessons in the story resonate strongly with readers. Padula's book is an amazing vessel to share the Gospel with teens. The plot is both entertaining and rich in important lessons; it uses realistic coming of age situations to reveal the unfiltered truth about a lifestyle that may seem appealing to many, but only from the outside. And most importantly, she emphasizes that drawing strength from God is the only way to live a fulfilling life that meets your personal needs and allows you to be a light to those around you.
This book shows the inspirational journey of high school freshman Jason, who struggles with substance dependency and realizes that he needs to rely on his friends and his faith in order to find purpose in a life that had previously felt empty. Throughout the story, Jason's struggles with friendships, temptation and scary realizations are documented. The book shows Jason's transition from caring mostly about popularity and partying, to realizing that he needs better values in order to live a fulfilling life. Jason's story of finding his way to happiness, while also dealing with the typical hardships of high school, was extremely inspirational and I recommend this book to anyone who wants to be inspired or reminded that there is always hope for better days in the future.
The third book in the Montgomery High Lake Series is another winner. In this book, Ms. Padula addresses the emptiness inside when a person has all the toys and all the things they want. What do you do when you have everything but are still empty? This is the void only God can fill.
Jason finds out that even the drugs, alcohol, sex, and popularity leave him feeling empty. But he is drawn to some who seem truly happy. What Jason finds is that God loves him and can fill his emptiness with his love. Jason faces the demons of addiction, pride, and lust—and in the end is victorious in Jesus.
Another well-written, spirit‑led book. The real issues faced and the real solutions are on point. I recommend these books for anyone from 12 to 32 or who just thinks like they are still between 12 and 32. I have become a fan of these books. The development of the characters, the story line, and the presentation of the Gospel is truly amazing.
The Aftermath by Stacy Padula is mainly focused in on one the characters, Jason. As you know, he is a little bit of the typical high school druggy. Througout the book, he is stuck in his party ways. Constantly drinking and smoking until he comes to the realization that enough is enough. He explains his whole situation to Pastor Mark, which is suprising to say the least but, he gets a little more than expected from it. This book shows readers that times may be tough but you need to push through. With the help of great friends and family supporting you, anything is possible. I believe this book is good for those readers that are struggling with something so similar. It could potentially make them realize this isnt the path they should be going down. They could have a change of heart or way of life. - Written by Samantha Waxman.
My favorite book in the series! This one goes deep and the character arch of Jason is superb. I recommend this book to anyone of any age because the characters draw you in. They are multi-dimensional and truly captivating. Read this book!
One of my all time favorite books!!! I love Jason Davids. What a great character. So much depth. You want to be his friend; you want to spend time with him; you want to understand him. 5 Stars for sure on this one!!!
The status quo has officially gone from rattled to completely decimated at Montgomery Lake High. In the third book of the Montgomery Lake High series “The Aftermath,” author Stacy Padula remains relatable to her young and impressionable audience, while also continuing to introduce faith in an informative, but not intrusive way. Padula demonstrates the power it can have on all aspects of our lives if we make ourselves open to it and offers those who come from different practices and religions an easier path to understanding the Christian faith and those who follow it. One way Padula successfully accomplishes this is by incorporating Bible verses, as well as lyrics from popular Christian songs into the plot line. Text that once seemed daunting and somewhat untouchable to a young audience is suddenly given real-life context, applicable to any teenager’s life.
While religion plays an important part in the plot, there are other core themes that can be taken away from the trials and tribulations of the characters we have come to love. The book heavily focuses on Jason and the changes he is facing in his life, as well as within himself. After seeing his childhood best friend, Chris, find God and move away from a life of destructive decisions including drugs and alcohol, Jason’s first instinct is to go in the complete opposite direction, going on benders and splitting their friend group down the middle. But, with self-reflection and the support of his peers and brother Matt, Jason is able to begin the journey of bettering himself and confronting his feelings instead of running from them.
Staying on the theme of family, Padula also forces the reader to challenge the assumptions we make about individuals due to their familial connections. By exploring the very gray dynamics that are sibling-relationships, such as that between twins Cathy and Chantal, and brothers Matt, Luke, and Jason, she encourages the reader to cultivate an idea of a person based on experiences and conversations with them, rather than rumors and stereotypes associated with them. For example, knowing Cathy and her often evil intentions, should in no way reflect upon the personality and actions of her identical twin Chantal, who is very faith based and tries to find the good in everything. Matt being a drinker and Luke being a “pill-popper” should not affect the reputation or expectations of Jason as an individual. We can see through the story how damaging these assumptions can be, and how we can work to overcome them.
Overall, the third installment of MLH has been my absolute favorite so far. Now that I have a deeper understanding of all of the characters and their connections to one another, it is even more amazing to me how Paula is able to give so many characters such distinct personalities that set them apart from one another. I would recommend this series to any child or teen experiencing those crucial formative years, as this novel offers realistic expectations for those entering this phase of life and solace to those who are already knee-deep in their journey.
Jason Davids, the kid who has it all: brains, beauty, and popularity. A life full of fulfillment, so one should think. Despite his blessings, Jason has constantly fought off a void he felt from the inside. Masking that emptiness with drugs, alcohol, and his popular friends, Jason found only a temporary high, literally and figuratively. In search of more, Jason began to realize that he had been walking in the dark, and the only way to emerge from the pits of obscurity was through the light—through God.
After Andy’s accident, their class president, Jason knew that living life in a haze wouldn’t suffice, and he needed to get sober. A long and bumpy road was ahead of him, full of trials and tribulations. Jason sought out a new source of fulfillment, one that wouldn’t leave him with a hangover and resentment. Many people had been praying for Jason’s salvation: Chantal, Chris, Jon, and Jessie, the girl who had captivated him and shown him the light. He has slowly begun to see the light in what used to be a grim and dark world. With clarity of mind, he uncovered the truth of what his classmates thought of him, he saw his friends, family, and the life he had built for what it truly was.
Jason had always been a skeptic of God and committing himself to his faith, as he didn’t see himself worthy, but through the inspiration of his best friend Chris, he knew that it was God who had given him the strength he needed to persevere his addictions. Will Jason muster the strength to walk away from his comfortable life as the freshman class's most popular party boy? Will he uncover the whole truth? Will he finally lift Satan’s veil from his eyes to see the light? If he can, it will not be easy. Satan doesn’t just let people walk out of his kingdom without a fight. If you want to find out, The Aftermath, by Stacy Padula is a must read!
“Montgomery Lake High Book 3: The Aftermath” gives a new perspective on the established cast of characters by involving the eyes of their fellow classmates. Jason, Cathy, and Jessie get involved in a rumor that sweeps out of control, spreading amongst their separate friend groups in different versions. The readers are shown how each character reacts to outside forces misconstruing their lives, and how some are able to find strength in their faith.
We are also given more context for why certain characters act the way that they do. These characters are teenagers, and even when they try to do the right thing, they may not always do it in the right way. Even the “straight-edge” characters can be frustrating, and the “bad” characters can be sympathetic. Their journeys toward becoming better people are not always formulaic, and I appreciate that the book doesn’t try to hide their struggles. Even when a character wants to change, they often have to work around the influence of their friends, which is something most teenagers will relate to.
It is nice to see some of the characters make active changes in their lives in an attempt to get better. Jason’s interactions with Pastor Mark are insightful and interesting, not only because of his biblical advice, but also because Pastor Mark’s daughter Jessie is one of the people unwittingly involved in the rumor that drives most of this book. I’m particularly interested to see if this rumor will end up spiraling any further, and if it does, how each involved party will react.
The book The Aftermath (Montgomery Lake High #3) by Stacey Padula advances the students journey at MLH. I have become very involved and comfortable with the characters' personalities and I think that God has a great impact on all of them. As this book is placed through the eyes of character Jason, the readers are able to get a better understanding of his struggles and how he seems to face them. The readers can experience the same guilt and confusion that Jason fears when he continues to blame himself for his classmate, Andy’s accident. The accident can be seen as a wakeup call for Jason due to the fact that he had given up partying and substances. This book can include the readers by explaining, in depth, the struggles and temptation that Jason endures. This book, along with the other series of Montgomery Lake High, is very realistic and incorporates common life lessons throughout. After reading The Aftermath, teens will now be exposed to the consequences of bad decisions, and the positive outcomes of good decisions. This book can be seen as a source for teens to navigate through highschool or tough decisions regarding one’s morals. Overall, I highly recommend teenagers to read this book because it will reveal to them another perspective on challenges common highschoolers go through.
The Aftermath by Stacy Padula is a fantastic novel about keeping hope through times of struggle. The kids of Montgomery Lake High are once again challenged to turn away from their dark path of drugs and alcohol and start walking the difficult path toward the light, and sobriety. Between heartache over Andy’s accident, new rumors speculating about relationships that may or may not exist, and a devastating breakup, this book is full of twists and turns that’ll keep readers on the edges of their seats until the very last page. The powerful message of hope provides inspiration to readers of all ages, showing them how looking for the silver lining in a bad situation can make anything better, and shows readers that staying strong helps others stay strong too. The friendships between the Montgomery Lake kids are beautiful examples of people who support each other in their times of need and really make a big difference in each other's lives, demonstrating the types of healthy friendships everyone should strive to create. Stacy Padula’s skillful writing draws in readers and makes them think about the important things in their lives: friends, faith, and family. It makes readers stop and think about why people do the things they do, especially the things that aren’t always beneficial, allowing readers to gain valuable insight into human nature from which they can learn and grow.
The Aftermath begins with the town of Montgomery Lake dealing with the storm that recently destroyed the town and left high school student Andy Rosetti in a coma. A main part of the book is seeing the incredible transformations of Jason Davis. Jason who has always been the popular bad boy is finally seeing how his drug issue is both hurting him and the people he loves. Jason turns to God to help him through the healing process and help him become a better person. Many other students and the pastor also help Jason along with this journey. Although he is still faced with temptations Jason leaves his partying life behind and finds himself on a safer and healthier path. The book's many lessons and themes make it the perfect book for high school students and high school parents. The book shows many difficult social situations high school students are often faced with and how to possibly deal with them. Through the book high school students are able to learn about different ways friendships are developed and how to make the best friendships possible
Fifteen year old Jason Davids is used to being the epitome of popularity at his school. He has the looks, the friends, the beautiful girlfriend, and success. Yet somehow he is not fulfilled and finds himself filling the void with drugs, alcohol, and cruelty. In the aftermath of a local tragedy, Jason sees his chance to break from his shallow and vindictive friends and make a fresh start. However, there is more going on in his school than meets the eye, and forces beyond his comprehension hold him back from escaping. In the midst of social and spiritual warfare, Jason learns who his true friends are and where he can place his trust. His battle to escape his worst vices is filled with ups, downs, and Jason’s eventual acceptance of his own inadequacies. Although Jason wants a life filled with meaning, he wonders if he has fallen too far to ever be pulled out of the pit he has dug for himself.
The Aftermath: Montgomery Lake High 3 is an engaging, realistic, important, relatable, and captivating story! This book is the third in the Montgomery Lake High series and is recommended for eleven to eighteen year olds! Unlike the Gripped series that follows Montgomery Lake High this series can easily be read as standalones. There are multiple characters who each have their own perspective throughout the book, however, Jason Davids is the main character. Jason is used to living a life envied by other students. His many achievements, relationships, and illicit substances make it appear as if Jason has everything together. How Jason feels internally tells another story. A girl that lives in life in a completely contrary way to Jason catches his attention. Jessie is a conservative Christian girl. To be with her Jason has to change his picture perfect high school life. Will peace or party pay off?
Throughout the Aftermath, by Stacy Padula the reader experiences the events following Andy’s tragic accident after the storm. During this time, Jason attempts to reconcile his differences with the people whom he has hurt, and comes to realize that his addiction caused a lot of deeper problems than he had once believed. He attempts to change his ways and learns that this path will be long, and challenging. He is faced with many temptations but continues to persevere in order to gain back respect from himself and those around him. I would rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend the Aftermath to high schoolers and young adults because they will be able to easily relate to the characters and their social problems/situations. Difficult challenges of popularity and high school clique culture are discussed throughout the book, and young adults can learn a variety of important life lessons.
In The Aftermath by Stacy Padula, the readers learn about highschool drama and see Jason and Cathy’s relationship crumble as Jason involves himself with a new girl. After Andy’s accident and Jason’s secrets behind it, Jason becomes unhinged and takes a break with Cathy. After getting in a fight at a highschool football game to protect another girl whom he is drawn to, Cathy spreads rumors to destroy Jason’s reputation and Jessie’s.
Jason is on a mission to change his life, stay away from drugs and start volunteering to feel more fulfilled. He feels as if he has everything he needs in life, such as popularity, a girl, and good grades and still lacks fulfillment. After his harsh night, he shares this with his brother and is set to turn his life around. He starts to realize how others see him and why everyone is afraid of him. We wonder if he will be able to stay sober, redeem his reputation, and focus on religion.
The Aftermath by Stacy Padula is an important continuation of the Montgomery Lake High series, which follows each individual character's life following recent major events. The book explores faith and spiritual recovery through characters such as Chris and Jason while also continuing to demonstrate the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse through Cathy’s new persona. Jason’s journey towards redemption offers an inspiring light, sending a standout message to young readers. The characters face relatable and realistic issues through engaging dialogue and dynamic storylines. The book does not shy away from difficult topics, but depicts themes of forgiveness, faith, and redemption in depth. The message of this book provides a hopeful light for young readers who may struggle with similar issues as the characters and many teenagers might find a connection in reading.
“Your entire school thinks you’re a heartless, drug addict, cheater of a boyfriend…” Jason Davids has hit rock bottom. His drug addiction is out of control, his girlfriend is out to ruin his reputation, and gossip links him to the local pastor’s daughter, Jessie. My favorite part of this book is watching Jason’s character develop throughout the novel. He has depth, and we see an entirely new side of him not seen in books one and two. Jason Davids has tried everything the world offers for happiness, yet none of it fulfills him. The Aftermath follows Jason’s story in a touching plot of failure and salvation. If you are looking for a heartwarming, yet realistic tale of deliverance, I would recommend “The Aftermath” to you.
Very enjoyable read. The characters are easy to relate to ane well developed. The way the author writes makes you feel like you are there in the suspense with Jason and his friends. It keeps you wanting to read more.
The Aftermath by Stacy Padula is the 3rd book in the Montgomery Lake High series. In book 2 of the series, Jason Davids realizes that he needs to straighten up his life. In the Aftermath, Jason is trying to fight his way through peer pressure, drugs, and his ex-girlfriend Cathy. After Jason defends Pastor Mark's daughter, Jessie, Cathy learns what happened between Jessie and Jason, and she is not pleased with what happened. Cathy, feeling threatened, rallies her friends to spread a rumor about Jason and Jessie. Jason and Jessie need to navigate the rumors and the problems that come with them. Jessie appears unbothered sure in her relationship with God, while Jason starts to find his way toward God. Padula shows readers that everyone, even those with a lot of baggage, is welcome to experience a relationship with God, and God will use all things to find you.
The Aftermath emphasizes just how important to surround yourself with the right group of friends and how God plays an impact in all things. Jason is torn between his best friend Chris, who has found faith and wants the same for Jason, and the people who still expect Jason to party. Jason begins to listen to Chris and sees the way God is acting in his life, and he starts to realize just how negatively his group of friends have impacted his life and is ready to make the necessary changes. The Aftermath is a great book for teens since it shows just how impactful a group of friends is on their lives and how great a relationship with God can change how they live. Being a teenager is an exceptional challenge, and The Aftermath shows the influence that kindness and faith have to ease that burden.
