Twenty-six year old, paramedic SEANNA BURGES wakes up five hours late to the sound of breaking glass on what was to be the eighth and final day of her work stretch. Seanna is quickly informed by her ambulance partner Ronny that the hospital they both work at has been overrun with patients infected with an unknown virus and things have quickly spiraled out of control. Those who are infected tend to die quickly... and they reanimate. During her travels to try to reunite with family she becomes a victim but her reaction leads to a different outcome for one important reason; she remains alive and is much closer to the origins of this event than she'd ever imagined.
At first, Affliction appears to be your everyday, run-of-the-mill zombie novel. Seanna wakes up and zombies are on the prowl. She goes to try and reunite with her family and--oh. She got bit. This is where the novel takes a different turn for the zombie genre.
I liked where it went. It was full of twists and turns, able to keep me guessing. And it ended on the perfect cliffhanger for a sequel. The story wrapped up in such a way that there's loose ends, but they're purposeful.
While the characters, for the most part, were different, some sounded the same. Affliction utilizes first person--an apt choice for the type novel. Seanna and her boyfriend, Graham, were the only two that popped. There were plenty of supporting characters. Each of them served a direct purpose to the plot. They felt a little flat, though. The interactions were fabulous
The story pacing was good. Things happened in a way that made sense. It's not an ultra-violent, hack-and-slash, survival zombie novel. There was a meaningful narrative. One that got built up very well. When it came to characters, the author was a big fan of the information dump. The story would pause for a few pages to give an entire background on one character. Not only did it jolt me out of the story, but it served to confuse me as well. I loved learning about the characters--don't get me wrong. They had interesting backstories. The timing was off. It broke the flow and continuity.
Affliction does need editing. Paragraphs were long, full of exposition, internal monologues, and observations. Description wasn't lacking. The fact that Seanna was a paramedic made for wonderful telling and plot points. While description wasn't lacking, there was an awful lot of telling, not showing. There's a lot of information to be had. Sentences run on for miles. There's multiple tense changes per sentence. The writing style feels solid, but the technical writing aspect needs adjustment.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I liked how it started one way, and then went in a completely opposite direction. It was suspenseful, with a solid plot and characters in the right spots. There's plenty of areas for improvement, but the same applies to lots of novels. I'd like to see a more polished version. Regardless of any of that, the author has a knack for good storytelling, and I look forward to future novels.
Affliction is a unique and stylish story that intertwines the familiar details of any zombie apocalypse tale with an original idea, in which the protagonist, Seanna, has become infected with the ever spreading contagion, but through the help of medical science, manages to prevent her complete transformation to "undead status."
As the reader, we follow the story through Seanna's POV (1st person), and begin to sympathize with her daily struggles as she remains confined in a secret lab in New Jersey, where she is being tended to. Though she is among friends and those who work to help her with her condition, not everything is as it seems in this mysterious medical center. As more truths are uncovered, Seanna must make difficult decisions in order to save herself, as well as protect those closest to her. The story does end a little abruptly, which leads me to assume that future novels will follow.
Affliction is a powerful and gripping tale of determination and resolve in suspenseful situations, and I found myself drawn into the plot as if by magic! Ms. Daniels does an excellent job keeping the flow of the story constant while taking us on a roller coaster of emotions as we follow the protagonist through her thoughts and actions. I'm not much for the zombie apocalypse type of story, but this one is such a unique treasure, that I couldn't help but enjoy it from beginning to end. I hope to see part 2 soon!
This book has such a unique twist to the familiar zombie-survival tale that I could not put it down once I started reading! The author has a way of surprising the heck out of you just when you think you have it figured out! The main character, Seanna, is a twenty-something paramedic that we meet just as a mysterious and violent outbreak is gripping her city. She's smart and strong like other female leads in the genre, but make no mistake, she's quite different! The story is told from her POV and Ms. Daniels does an excellent job of bringing us into Seanna's head and body...you have to read to see what I mean! It's tense and funny and terrifying and moving in all the right measures. When I hit the last page I scrolled back several times to be sure it was over because I was so into it! I'll be waiting for the next installment!
Wow! This book was awesome. I enjoy horror and scary books but I've never read a zombie book before. Affliction is written in first person, which worked so well. I enjoyed the perspective of the main character Seanna, who is a paramedic dealing with a zombie outbreak. I was instantly hooked by the strong, intelligent main character. The writing flows very well and the author did a great job telling the story. I very much enjoyed the human aspect of this story. If you're a fan of The Walking Dead you will love this book. I strongly recommend Affliction by Dottie Daniels. Great job!
I enjoyed this book in ebook format. It is very much written in the first person and is one of those stories that has moments where there are parts that are told instead of shown. The language is easy to understand and the plot is semi relate-able. I would read more from this author.
Read the Look Inside on amazon. If you enjoy that then you will enjoy that, then this is the book for you.
Affliction surrounds twenty-six-year old Seanna Burges, a paramedic who wakes up during a Zombie invasion. In a scene similar to your favorite Zombie movie, people are trying to get away from their now mindless neighbors who have been infected. Unsure of what’s going on, Seanna’s partner Rodney “Ronnie” Bowen arrives to explain to her what’s going on and the danger of going outside. Seanna isn’t trying to hear it. The phone lines are down and she has not heard from her boyfriend Graham. After going back and forth, the two eventually leave the apartment and fight off zombies on their way to Seanna’s car in true Walking Dead fashion.
I was excited to read this book. The amazing cover and professional production had me digging in. I enjoyed the beginning of this novel. It took off in true Zombie fashion: right in the middle of the action. I like the way the author infuses her medical experience into the narrative. With the main character being a paramedic, it makes it believable. All the medic parts are on point and made sense. My heart also sank for the elderly woman Ruthie who is 83 and have been bit by a zombie. If you are familiar with any Zombie movie / TV show, you know what that means. There is only a matter of time.
Eventually, Seanna is bitten as well, rescued by SWAT and taken to a research facility but Seanna doesn’t die. This plays into the mysterious feel of the book as we anticipate why Seanna is different.
At this point, the novel slows down for me. Maybe it was meant to be suspenseful but the ambiguity wasn’t working for me personally. I was anxious to understand what was going on and why Seanna’s case was different from everyone else. The author spends a lot of time drip feeding us details and while I enjoyed the medical terminology, insight, and eventual revelations, Seanna’s time spent in the facility is uneventful. It made me feel like I was in the hospital with her and we really needed to get out and get on with our lives.
There’s a lot of telling. I would have loved to know how Seanna felt (instead of being told) as she was experiencing these zombie-like feelings. As she battled the effects of being bitten. How did it feel to have undigested food, blood in the eye, and a dropping blood pressure?
Affliction is recommended for fans of Horror and books with Apocalyptic themes.
