Like many paranormals of Greek descent, Kai Xanthopoulos will not know her true nature until her young powers fully manifest. Unlike her parents—and much to the dismay of her stray cat best friend—Kai has chosen not to spend the rest of her life at the diner in Nocturne Falls. She takes a job at Delaney’s Delectables instead, a decision that puts her directly in the path of a fugitive werewolf that could change her destiny…
Finn Kincaid is cursed. Literally. Accused of murdering his pack-brother, beaten and left for dead in the woods, he runs to Nocturne Falls to seek sanctuary with the one cousin who successfully got out of Tennessee: Ivy Merrow, the sheriff’s wife. On his way there, he’s drawn off course by a girl with no idea how much power she possesses, both within herself, and over him.
Together, Kai and Finn must find a way to break the curse and fight their fate, without destroying each other—and their future—in the process.
First of all, I love this idea with Kristen Painter inviting other authors to write their own stories set in her world, Nocturne Falls. For a town filled with a lot of wacky and awesome characters, it works out because it does not quite matter that the tone and feeling are a bitter different from Kristen Painter’s version because we can chalk that up to a character “thinking differently.”
Anyway, this is cute. I was not expecting actual teenagers, as we have not focused on any teenagers in Nocturne Falls, but this is interesting. Also, I love that the author uses her culture to influence the character as well. We get some Greek mythology and a lot of new paranormal elements that Nocturne Falls has not tapped on before.
And what a weird coincidence for me when I was reading this! I have literally just watched the Princess Bride movie for the first time this week, and I have been comparing movie v. book with my friend (love the movie, hate the book), and coincidentally, the characters in the book were talking about the movie and book version of it here, too.
Anyway, I’m giving this 3 solid stars. I enjoyed it. It’s fun and cute and refreshing.
NOTE: Despite the author’s cool, new take on Nocturne Falls, I think there MIGHT have been a factual error. While the author has free reign on what to do with the world, and I like that, I think one of the original characters from Nocturne Falls was described SLIGHTLY incorrectly. Ivy (from Book #2) has dark hair, I believe, but I THINK I read at the beginning of this book that Ivy is blond here? However, perhaps she dyed her hair color, which is possible too. Anyway, not that it really matters, but it’s something that I noticed. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
Things that you might want to know (WARNING: Spoilers below) Is there a happy/satisfying ending? Love triangle? Cheating? Angst level? Tears-worthy? Humor? Favorite scene? What age level would be appropriate? ------------ Sucker for cutesie shit like this <3
Kristen Painter has extended the Nocturne Falls Universe and got a bunch of authors to write novellas. I think they are a must read for fans of the Universe. And also a great way to discover new author- or at least to me they were all new authors.
My favorite of the Nocturne Falls Universe Novellas so far!
I totally fell in love with the cast. Kontis did an amazing job at the character building. This is just a novella but I feel like I know Finn and Kai. Add to that the support cast which was done well as well. I love that we get a little visit with old loved characters from NF. The amazing thing about this is that it feels like the characters that Painter had written. The storyline is cute. There is a total insta vibe going but I didn't mind AT ALL, which shows you how well Kontis did with the plot. The writing style is wonderful as well. This left me wanting an entire book about Finn and Kai. I definitely will read more by Kontis!
Kai was born into magic and the wonders of the unknown. So, why doesn't she know what her own powers are or how to use them? This is a coming-of-age story of sorts set in a town where almost everyone is hiding just a little bit more than a few tricky secrets!
Verdict: I liked it. A quirky quick read (or listen) with likable characters and enough well-paced action to keep the reader interested. This was not a gloppy romance (overindulgent in sappy lines and urgent sex), but with the appropriate amount of teenage angst, it made for a short and sweet one-day read.
2019 bk 365 - Alethea Kontis has some of the best crafted books in the Nocturne Falls Universe collection. Instead of adding 'mary sue fan fic' to the drop in citizens of the community, she has turned to a sub community within Nocturne Falls - that of the students attending the Academy. Her teens are have the ultimate feeling of being real teenagers with all of the lows and highs of life in a high school. The students are well-woven together with adults there in the periphery with suble and sometimes very noisy help. This book felt the most natural of any of the universe. I enjoyed all three of the novels that were available for print. What a joy to find someone who writes the wonderful world of teenage years so well.
The younger generation of Nocturne Falls, a magical town that celebrates Halloween year-round. Magic, a cursed wolf shifter and a cursed cat. High school drama, but only a smidge. Plus lots of laughs. I really enjoyed the innocence and the humor in this novella. A wonderful addition to the series.
Excerpt: “Am I a butterfly?” he asked, without really wanting to know the answer. “I turned you into a cockroach,” she said. “Far more appropriate.” She scooped him up and placed him gently on the table, then plopped herself down beside him with all the flourish of a princess. “There. See? That’s much better. Now we can talk eye to eye, like civilized people.” “You’re a civilized nutcase,” said Finn. “Don’t make me squash you,” warned Bellamy. “Look,” said Finn. “There’s no need for all this. I went to see Kai last night.” “To attack her again with your lusty wolf lips?” “To apologize.” Finn found it incredibly difficult to stress the gravity of one’s words when one was a talking bug.” Excerpt From: Kontis, Alethea. “The Truth About Cats and Wolves: A Nocturne Falls Universe Book.”
This book was a great addition to Kristen Painter's Nocturne Falls Universe. I love how Alethea wove her story into the series seamlessly. Her hero is part of the Kincaid family. Finn Kincaid finds himself in trouble and heads for Nocturne Falls for sanctuary. He is taken by surprise by his initial encounter with Kai, a Greek paranormal still trying to figure out what her gifts are. This is the first YA (Young Adult) story within the NF storyline, and I'm thrilled to see a YA novel in this setting. My teenage daughter has been anxiously awaiting the opportunity when she can read a NF novel. Now I can provide her with one! Enjoy!
Omg completely loved this but to be honest knew I would, excellent story and seriously some roaring laughing moments as well as epic story, would love to read more about them thank you for a wicked book xxxx
“Fate only clears the path. How you walk it is up to you.” ~THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND WOLVES
THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND WOLVES is out today. Snag a digital copy for a mere $2.99!!!
THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND WOLVES may be part of the Nocturne Falls Universe created by Kristen Painter, but you don't have to read that series to read this. The characters are brand-new, and the title focuses on the teens living in the town that celebrates Halloween 365 days a year rather than the adults.
If you love paranormal novels, you'll really enjoy this! If you're not a huge PN reader (I'm not, either!), you still may love it because it's more focused on mythology and relationships than it is about "being paranormal."
Alethea Kontis inputs her trademark mixing of mythology and lore into her latest offering. Kai Xanthopoulos is Greek and living in a town of paranormal beings. It's commonplace to rub elbows with werewolves, fairies, witches, etc. Kai is Greek, and hasn't come into her abilities yet--though she will begin to as the novel progresses, and while they're super spoilery, they're also super cool! Kai's life is uneventful until the day Finn Kincaid blows into town. He's a werewolf on the run, cursed with bad luck. When he sees Kai, he can't help but kiss her, despite having never met her before. His existence starts bringing out Kai's powerful abilities, and if she can figure out who she is and learn how to control her manifesting powers, maybe she can break Finn's curse and figure out why she feels so drawn to him.
I gulped this book down in one sitting and immediately wanted more. Kontis has created an intriguing world and introduced us to already-endearing new characters. There are enough loose threads that I could see her returning to Nocturne Falls and giving us more books about these characters, because I'm just not ready to say goodbye to them yet. There are so many spoilery things I can't talk about, which makes this review hard, but I really like the way all the magical and mystical elements were handled. It was a great blend of contemporary and fantasy and paranormal, and it never bored me. In fact,
I kind of wanted to see if Ivy had a story in the original series because her character intrigued me so much. I'm also wondering if any other residents of Nocturne Falls that we encountered were from Kristen Painter's original series. While I never felt left out or like I was missing anything because Kontis introduced the world so well, it did make me wonder what I'd missed out on and consider coming back to play with the original series! When Kontis published FISH OUT OF WATER this past fall as part of the Barefoot Bay line, I had no desire to read any other books in that world because the surrounding characters didn't stand out to me. I can already tell that Painter has well-fleshed out characters and an intriguing world (I mean, seriously, a town that celebrates Halloween 365 days a year and has residents who have NO CLUE that paranormal beings live among them? SO INTRIGUING!!!) because they carried over into THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND WOLVES so well and so naturally. Nothing felt forced or added in for no reason.
While I'm normally not a fan of insta-love romances, the one between Kai and Finn really works here. There are REASONS that these two have the connection they do, and since Kontis has that fairy tale-vibe in all of her writing, it just works. I loved all the Greek asides inputted throughout the book, as well as the way Finn is always quoting Hamlet. A guy who loves literature and has memorized the classics? Yes, please!!! There are also a lot of great secondary characters, but the stand-out has to be Owen, who....well, SPOILERS, but I definitely would love to see these books continue and to see more of him!
Overall, THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND WOLVES was a fun, fast, engaging read that was hard to put down. I'm already packing my suitcase because I want to take another trip to Nocturne Falls VERY soon!!!
***BREAKING NEWS!!!***
YOU GUYS, YOU GUYS, YOU GUYS!!!! I KNOW SECRETS. SECRETS I'M ALLOWED TO SHARE WITH ***YOU.***
1) THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND WOLVES is going to tie into a BRAND NEW SERIES from Alethea Kontis debuting later this year!!!!!!!!! It's called The Border Court, about a special street in our world (South Carolina, specifically) where people live who are exiled or have run away from Faerie!!! Does that not sound AMAZING!? I seriously already want to read it!!!!
2) THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND WOLVES is not--I repeat NOT--the only book Alethea will write in the Nocturne Falls Universe!!!!!!! There has been speculation--heck, I speculated in this review! *flails* The second book will be about Bellamy, who is a super cool friend of Kai's that helps to break Finn's curse and I'm so excited to dig into her story!!! The book will come out in September 2017!
3) FINALLY...!!!!! Want to hear something suspicious???? Have you noticed that Sherrilyn Kenyon and Alethea Kontis are doing a LOT of stuff together this year??? They miiiight be working on some more books in the Dark-Hunter universe...Nothing is confirmed, of course, but there are rumors of a Dark-Hunter alphabet book and a YA series about Simi!!!!!!!
I've most recently reviewed her YA contemporary FISH OUT OF WATER, and Mandy has reviewed her YA horror novel HAVEN, KANSAS and had Alethea over for a guest post on how making horror movies helped give her the foundation to write HAVEN!
Alethea Kontis has also stopped by A Backwards Story several times to talk about her books, fairy tales, mermaids, and more because she's awesome like that! *loves her*
I didn't want to like this one because I have some kind of personal hang-up when it comes to YA (Is every high school girl in YA fiction required to end up in some kind of love triangle? Seriously.), but I gobbled it up and wanted more when I'd finished. The characters were spunky, the story was cute, and the Merrows are some of my favorite characters in the NFU, so I loved seeing more of them. I'll be checking out more from this author because her writing was on point and reminded me a little of Sherrilyn Kenyon. Maybe she'll even convert me to YA. BIG maybe.
I've mentioned several times on the blog how much I love Kristen Painter's Nocturne Falls series set in the town where every day is Halloween. Now it's expanding to include other authors in the Nocturne Falls Universe. Alethea Kontis looks at the YA side of the town in The Truth About Cats and Wolves.
Finn Kincaid makes a big impression when he arrives in Nocturne Falls, leading the sheriff's department on a chase through town. He's a misunderstood bad boy with shaggy hair and a leather jacket, but he's not really a criminal. He quotes Shakespeare and charms all the high school girls. He's totally Jess! I enjoyed his romance with Kai even though I didn't feel like there were a lot of surprises there. The really interesting elements were Kai discovering her magic and the removal of Finn's curse.
Throughout the course of the Nocturne Falls series, Painter has introduced several kids and the school librarian. Kontis mentions those teens but the story focuses on new ones she created. I thought she did a great job integrating the characters and places from the existing series, incorporating much more of the source material than I would have expected. But Kontis also adds bits of Greek, Egyptian, and Latin American myth and magic, which I loved to see. It makes the town truly feel like a melting pot. For all of its supernatural variety, Nocturne Falls wasn't actually very diverse.
Kontis also did a great job preserving the feel of the original series by using the Halloween parade in the story. I liked seeing how the teens contribute to the atmosphere - the cheerleaders performing in the parade for example. And I loved that Kai's friend Bellamy drove a giant jack-o-lantern. That was seriously one of my favorite moments.
My only complaint is with the obligatory YA love triangle, which felt one-sided. (Shut up, I hated geometry.) That is to say the wolf side was much better developed than the cat side. This might be due to the novella length, but I wonder if Kai's relationship with Owen could have been handled differently. Still, I'm intrigued by Owen and I'd love to see more of him.
I'd also love to get more YA set in Nocturne Falls. I had been thinking, though I don't know if I ever shared those thoughts, that a YA series set at Harmswood Academy was a great idea. If it's going to happen, Kontis is off to a great start with the magical teens she introduced here.
Originally published at Goldilox and the Three Weres and based on a copy provided by the author
The Truth About Cats and Wolves: A Nocturne Falls Universe Story by Alethea Kontis is a fun, refreshing romantic urban fantasy following Kai Xanthopoulos, a young woman on the verge of discovering--and deciding--her fate, beginning with her inexplicable encounter with a refugee werewolf who wants the Nocturne Falls police to catch him. Finn's arrival is certainly no accident, but his connection to Kai comes as a surprise to everyone and leads to the discovery of her long-awaited powers. To add to the fun, Owen--the cat that can talk to her?--he's more than he's let on, and his secrets could mean trouble for Kai on the distant horizon.
Kontis' love story busts through urban fantasy tropes with glee. Kai is a wonderfully strong young woman, both in personality and in her emerging powers. Kai's powers give her options, as contrasted with some urban fantasy stories where the woman is constantly beholden to her dangerous companions. Furthermore, Kai's introspection--balanced well by the story's action and magic--is honest in a way that makes me want to be her. Where other protagonists might simper over the abusive bad boy, Kai evaluates her options and her emotions in a way that respects her self and those around her. As icing on the cake, werewolf Finn is not your typical 'bad' boy, either, or Kai would kick him to the curb in the second chapter.
There's plenty of magic and fun, too. Both cat and wolf carry endearing traits over to their human form. Kai's family and friends range from fairy to novice witch. Nocturne Falls is a delightful urban fantasy town (by Kristen Painter) where paranormals like Kai keep the human residents in the dark using spelled water. But of course, spelled water can't hide everything! Kai and her fae friends have to be careful not to give away the town's secret (or get in trouble with Harmswood paranormal school) as they seek to break Finn's curse.
I hope there's a follow-up to The Truth About Cats and Wolves. Kontis gives readers a light-hearted coming-of-age romance, with a tasty hint of more adventure to come.
This story follows a Kai, a girl with not yet defined powers and Finn, a werewolf boy running from the Kincaid pack. Their first encounter is electric and intense and the rest of the story is equally intense. The story is beautifully written and the story line is amazing. We see some of the old well known characters, Hank and Ivy, and we meet some of the kids from the Harmswood school. We get a chance to enter the school as well, which I thought was pretty cool. We also meet a cat boy Owen, Kai's friend, who I would really like to see in the next book. Overall, I am very curious of the next books, and I do hope that this is not a one time deal for Alethea Kontis. Not only that her writing is beautiful, but she also managed to capture the atmosphere and the existing characters of Nocturne Falls, as well as create new characters that fit perfectly into the setting created by Kristen Painter. The Nocturne Falls reading order is: The Vampire's Mail Order Bride (Nocturne Falls #1), The Werewolf Meets His Match (Nocturne Falls #2), The Gargoyle Gets His Girl (Nocturne Falls, #3), The Professor Woos The Witch (Nocturne Falls, #4), and The Witch’s Halloween Hero (Nocturne Falls #4.5) in Spell of the Ball Anthology, The Werewolf's Christmas Wish (Nocturne Falls #4.6) in Hex the Halls Anthology, The Vampire’s Fake Fiancée (Nocturne Falls #5), A Vampire's Valentine Surprise (Nocturne Falls #5.5), Miss Frost Solves A Cold Case : A Nocturne Falls Mystery (Jayne Frost #1), The Shifter Romances The Writer (Nocturne Falls #6), Miss Frost Ices The Imp : A Nocturne Falls Mystery (Jayne Frost #2), The Vampire’s True Love Trials (Nocturne Falls #6.5) in Taming the Vampire collection, Miss Frost Saves The Sandman : A Nocturne Falls Mystery (Jayne Frost #3), The Truth About Cats And Wolves: A Nocturne Falls Universe story by Alethea Kontis, Magic's Song: A Nocturne Falls universe Story by Sela Carsen, The Witch Rescues Her Werewolf: A Nocturne Falls Universe story by Cate Dean, The Vampire Bounty Hunter's Unexpected Catch: A Nocturne Falls Universe story by Larissa Emerald, Reaping The Immortal: A Nocturne Falls Universe story by Pamela Labud and Close Encounters Of The Alien Kind: A Nocturne Falls Universe story by Fiona Roarke. The Dragon Finds Forever (Nocturne Falls #7) is coming this year as well.
I received an advance reader copy and I voluntarily reviewed.
The Truth About Cats And Wolves is written by Alethea Kontis in the Nocturne Falls Universe.
Kai Xanthopoulos is Greek. This is sufficient explanation in the Supernatural World for what she is.
But what she is is a teenager living in Nocturne Falls, who chose to leave her parents diner to work at Delaney's Delectables. In the Greek Supernatural World, children do not come into their various powers until puberty or later. Kai is still waiting.
Then she runs into Finn. Or, more accurately, Finn runs into her.
Then things get interesting.
Alethea Kontis does a good job of incorporating her story into the existing Nocturne Falls Universe, created by Kristen Painter.
This is one in a series of stories being released in the "Nocturne Falls Universe" and this is one is a little different as the focus is on a YA cast. That being said I LOVE YA fiction so I was all about it. Whether you read YA generally or not and you love Nocturne Falls then this is a good fit for you. It definitely "feels" like the original series and although it is a novella it feels like you get a complete story. That being said I certainly wouldn't be sorry to read more about this cute little couple!
Me encanto!
I picked this up from a lfl and I misread Nocturne Falls Universe as Nocturne Falls University- wasn't expecting the characters to be teenagers. I had low expectations when I started the book, but I found myself enjoying it. It was a silly book with a silly premise with some actually good writing at times. I will be dropping it off at a new lfl soon for someone new to enjoy :).
I felt this was a good fit both in the quality and spirit of Kristin Painter's Nocturne Falls series, and I'll be looking at more of Althea Kontis' novels.
This is a spin-off or companion novella that ties into the Nocturne Falls stories that author Kristen Painter writes. This novella is a part of that "universe" and it is a very welcome part! The book focuses on some of the younger residents of Nocturne Falls and it is a great perspective to read from! I love the idea of the teens getting a place in the story and would love to read more about this age set!!
Author Alethea Kontis spins a seamless tale into the exciting world of Nocturne Falls and it is a world that leaves the reader wanting more! I loved Kai and Finn and I love the way their relationship is developed in this one! There is no sex, no swearing and no distractions. While this could technically be read as a stand-alone, it is best read with some knowledge of Nocturne Falls, as the author doesn't give much of the back story in this one.
Grab this book and the rest of the Nocturne Falls books - you don't want to miss out!!
WOW - I just love the series about Nocturne Falls. And these by guest authors just keep the fun going!!!
The Truth About Cats and Wolves is about Kai (a girl who has yet to come into her powers) and Finn (a werewolf boy who is running from his pack). As the story starts, the reader is made aware of the fact that Finn and his brother had been cursed by a witch. Finn ran away from his pack and headed to where a relative lived in Nocturne Falls. Finn and Kai meet shortly after he arrives in Nocturne Falls. OK - I have to stop here because I hate when someone tells you all that is going to happen - SPOILERS big time. BUT, you really need to read this because it is one of those books that you will not want to put down until you finish!!!
I was given a copy of this book for an honest review.
Minder her own business manning the shop at Delaneys Delectibles Kai's peaceful day is interrupted by a hot guy causing uproar in the streets and then a kiss from the movies by said guy. Only for him to be arrested and to find out he's the victim of a curse.
The very first YA within the series this book took me by surprise. I was al ready for the typical angsty teenage point of view I've come to know from past YA I've read. Instead I got a well written story easily able to be read by teenagers or adults. I'm not normally a YA fan because of the immaturity and end-of-the-world-love feel to most of the books I've read however this book contains a maturity to it without it being adult. The story is more focused around the mystery to be solved rather then the love story, although that is of course there.
Easy flowing story with great characters, not only the main protagonists (whom I directly fell in love with) but the others too, especially the cat (such a feline!) and Mrs X and ... oh, all of them. I'd love to read more about them! Kai - the heroine - is kick-ass and cool but very real and believable in her growing-up insecurities too, I could totally relate to her even though I am way older. Her counterpart Finn is the epitom of broody wolf, willing to sacrifice his own happiness to protect everyone he loves, never too much, I understood and liked him from the start. Their story is gripping and fun and drama and romance, absolutely enjoyable. A great addition to the Nocturne Falls series!
I absolutely love Nocturne Falls! This novella is part of a Nocturne Falls Universe where certain authors write a story with Kristen Painter's beloved characters. I really love this point of view, the teenagers of Nocturne. Kai works at Delaney's and is bored.. that is until a dark cloud comes down the street in the form of one cursed teenage werewolf Finn. Finn comes into to Delaney's and kiss Kai senseless. Finn and Kai with the help of her friends, must find away to break his curse before it kills him. It was great to see Ivy and Hank again! I reaaly enjoied this book! Can't wait to read the other books in this Universe.
Wow! So far, this is my favorite book in this new Nocturne Falls Universe. I just love this author and plan on looking up her other work. I would like to see another book in the future about Kai and Finn when they are older. I didn't think I would care for this because they are teenagers but it was superb for all ages. There was so much happening the whole time in the story. I thought the little twists were wonderful. And the thing that Kai turns out to be is so amazing. She could really be a badass. Please make this a series? They could always move to another town if it can't be Nocturne Falls Universe. Lol.
The Truth About Cats and Wolves is a very good story and I LOVED the character of Kai! Alethea Kontis has a wonderful imagination and came up with an excellent new paranormal for Nocturne Falls. This is a very strong addition to one of my favorite fictional places and I hope the author will continue to add to the Nocturne Falls Universe.
I loved this story line about the teenagers in Nocturne Falls. It was heart warming and fast paced. A bad luck curse is not always bad. But you will have a good time with Kai, Finn, Bellamy, Maya and Kaley.
So, here we have a story set in Nocturne Falls that does not feel like Nocturne Falls. There are character names mentioned from the main series - but these are not those characters. I had to struggle and struggle with this one, and finally I just gave up and DNF.
As will all my reviews there are no spoilers and no story recap. This short story is written in third person and has no explicit language or sexual scene. While this is a part of the Nocturn Falls Universe created by Kristen Painter it can be read as a standalone without having read any other book in the series and it can be read in no particular order if you haven’t (for some strange reason) already gobbled up all the other stories/books of Nocturne Falls. I have not read any other stories by Alethea Kontis but she makes a great addition to the guest authors Kristen Painter has chosen.
This story is a YA story about teenagers. I don’t have any issues with that but it might be make a difference to someone else. The story was cute and quick without any real ‘problems’. If you haven’t read the main Nocturne Falls book you may be at a slight disadvantage reading this story. There is no recap or explanation about anyone or the town; it doesn’t hold the story back but it leaves out so much. This story could easily be expanded in to a whole book, and then a series with the friends or other teens in town, and marketed towards that YA group – If I was Ms. Kontis I would be trying to make a deal with Mrs. Painter to do just that – While not my usual read, she would have this adult getting each one. This story was very well written and flowed well enough to fit right into Nocturne Falls.
