Determined to get her life back on track, Lexie retraces a road trip she went on with Alex before he died. The trip was meant to be a harmless adventure to revisit old memories and track down an elusive color of nail polish. Instead, Lexie uncovers a truth in Sugar Hill that her mother wanted to keep hidden.

She tries to keep her mysterious neighbor at a safe distance, but after he fights off an armed attacker, Lexie finds herself turning to him for comfort.
Her new protector can’t stop the evil forces already in play…
There is only one person who can answer for the chaos that has taken over Lexie’s life…her mother. The man responsible for the torment detailed in the pages of the diary is real, and now his sights are set on Lexie. His henchmen might have failed, but he won’t.
Lexie must figure out exactly how much she trusts Jackson and his good intentions if she ever wants a chance to finally piece her life back together. But first she has to survive…

Some demons don’t die. They wait...

Review:
“Every logical thought screamed at him to stop this before it went any further, but he couldn’t help himself. He wanted to know what could have been. Jackson pulled Lexie’s door open and held his hand out for her. She slipped her hand into his...the contact made his blood heat.”

5 distorted stars! Suspenseful and dangerous!! I loved everything about this book!
This book is twisted, suspenseful and edgy! I was constantly kept on my toes as I read and you feel the pain and anguish that Lexie is going through. And don’t get me started on how amazing Jackson is!! The mysterious stranger next door… ugh he’s everything you want in a neighbor and more. This book will leave you guessing at every turn and gasping for air at others! The chemistry between Jackson and Lexie is hot and off the charts sexy!! I had a hard time putting this book down because I needed to know what was going on with Lexie!! Definitely worth the read!

I’ve been a fan of McNeil’s work for a while now but after reading the first book to this series, I have to say that McNeil needs to be on everyone’s radar.

Degrees of Distortion was intriguing, a page turner, suspenseful and dare I say a bit steamy. A great introduction into what I believe will be a gripping series.

On a harmless road trip, Lexie Wilder uncovers a past she had no intention of uncovering, one that had Lexie questioning her own mother. With each page turned I was more and more invested in the story, trying to figure out who Lexie should trust and what type of past her mother had.

I was also introduced to the dark and dangerous Jackson. A man I wasn’t sure Lexie should trust but I couldn’t blame her for being drawn to him. He was mysterious and carried himself with unyielding confidence. Each time there was a scene with him in it, the more excited I got. He’s one mighty fine male that everyone should get to know. ;)

It was interesting the way McNeil tied the past and the present together to come up with an action filled ending. Oh, and what an ending it was with various POV’s and a cliffhanger that left me immediately wanting the next book.

Degrees of Distortion should be on everyone’s TBR list.

Lexie went on a trip with her best friend Stephanie to relive the moments with the love of her life, Alex, after tragedy struck. Coming across a small town, Sugar Hill, Lexie and Stephanie finds pictures of her mom in the wall. A shady looking man questions them about a woman named Mary Connors. Leaving right away and going back home Lexie puts the trip behind her until similar men start to show up around her. Calling her mom and telling her what happened, Lexie is told to grab a bag from her mom's house and to leave town right away. Confused Lexie does as she's told when the same men shows up at her mom's house unexpected. After leaving town Lexie meets Jackson, a hot neighbor that stirs feelings she hasn't had since Alex. Not knowing who to trust she tries to keep her distance, but once she's found out again she has to trust a guy she does not know. Everyone has secrets and sometimes those who seem good are anything but that. Will Lexie finally learn the truth that her mom has been keeping from her, or will these shady men catch her first?

In the beginning I was confused but as the story kept going things finally start to come together. Poor Lexie who has been thru so much is now running from men that may want to harm her. Then here comes Jackson who happens to be around when she needed help the most. The attraction between the two was hot. The body feels what the body feels even when the mind tells it different. I enjoyed the chemistry between the two. I really liked this book and would recommend it to others to read. I am looking foward to the next book in the series and to reading more from this author.

Lexie lost her long term boyfriend, Alex, last year and she hasn't quite recovered. Desperate to keep a piece of him alive in his heart, she and her best friend Stephanie retrace a road trip that she took with Alex. On the way, she discovers that her mother isn't who she said she was. Now there are strange men with guns after her and Lexie is left with no option but to flee her home town.

Lexie's mother, who was prepared in case the men came after them, sends Lexie to a safe house that she set up many years ago. While hiding out, Lexie can't help but notice the sexy stranger next door.

Jackson has spent his entire adult life hell bent on solving his father's murder. Now, the girl in the mysterious cabin next door, holds not only the key to the crime but also the most beautiful eyes he has ever seen.

Try as they might, Jackson and Lexie can't keep their hands off of each other. When they get together, they both feel a release from all the horrible things in their past. Now their connection may be the very thing that risks, not only his father's murder case, but also Lexie's life. Secrets are revealed that change everything both Jackson and Lexie thought they knew and now life will never be the same.

I loved this book! The writing built up the suspense and I couldn't get enough. McNeil had some amazing twists that completely took me by surprise and I was left staring at my kindle open mouthed.

Lexie was a likable character and at no point did I hate her. I feel like some authors struggle with creating a likable character when they don't write the girl next door. Lexie was broken and made mistakes. There were times where I begged her not to go into the proverbial basement but, of course, she did it anyway. Lexie was spunky and sexy but was filled with a vulnerability that I felt I could relate to. However, I didn't peg her as a damsel in distress waiting for a man to come and save her. She knew what she wanted and was willing to fight for it and for her loved ones.

Jackson...What is sexier than an alpha male with a police badge, bulging muscles, and a need to please in more ways than one? Still thinking of your answer? I'd wait but we'd be here all day. Actually, what made Jackson even better, were his partners Dane and Teddy. I loved their dynamic and how they looked out for each other. Think the three musketeers with cell phones, guns, and modern day sex appeal.

Now, speaking of a need to please. This book has a good amount of sex in it. The scenes are intense and detailed but not overly graphic. There were one or two things that didn't make sense in one of the scenes but it didn't ruin the moment for me. I moved on pretty quickly because I was enjoying my new book boyfriend. It's perfect for a romance reader who likes it dirty but not necessarily kinky.

This book is a series and I can guarantee you that I'll be reviewing the second book so stay tuned! McNeill has other books out and I recommend you take a look at those too. She is a fantastic writer and I am excited to see what else she puts out into the literary universe.

Lexie gets caught up in her mothers unraveling past with a man more dangerous than she could imagine.
But on the course of her journey to safety she meets a police officer of sorts (well who doesn't love a sexy bad cop?!). Introducing Jackson....

Excerpt:
This was a powerful man that was capable of great and horrible things. This man did not open doors or offer sweet smiles. He carved his path too close to danger to be safe. She could see it in his eyes as they promised her dark and beautiful secrets.

With varying POV from the main characters we get a good insight into the action packed read Aimee McNeil drags you into...you can't help but fall into the fear and action of this book and the characters who bring a whole array of questions and concerns over.

Got to admit the ending killed me, but wow! What a cliffhanger to lead us into what I hope will be a brilliant series!

Final excerpt:
The only thing Jackson cared about was crumbling the very foundation beneath John Stodden's feet and making sure that Lexie wasn't in the way when it all came crashing down...

This is one of the best books I've read in weeks, and I read A LOT! The 3 books from different authors I chose before this one were DNF's so I was extremely happy when I began this book and it hooked me in from the beginning. It is written really well and the plot kept me intrigued the whole way through. I felt I knew the characters personally and was invested in the story. I highly recommend!

4.5 stars!!

First off, many thanks to the author, who provided a free copy of Degrees of Distortion in exchange for an honest review.

I have previously read Truth or Dare and Catching Fox by this author, and am stoked that she is trying her hand at a more suspenseful, action based type of story.

This book begins with a road trip, and a heroine that already has some major issues. Lexie has already suffered the devastating loss of her boyfriend, Alex. When we meet her, she is in the middle of having a total meltdown over the fact that the nail polish that he bought her on a previous road trip has run out. Her best friend immediately suggests retracing the road trip in hopes of finding where he purchased said nail polish. They have no luck, but find something much more intriguing in a dive bar they visit along the way. The girls find a picture on the wall there of a woman that is the spitting image of Lexie’s mother, Mary. When they ask about it, they are given a totally different name and are told that she disappeared x-amount of years ago. Freaked out both by this discovery and the questions that followed, the girls hightail it out of there.

The girls return home, hoping to find out more about this mystery. But before Lexie can barely get the question out of her mouth, there are sinister looking men turning up in her mom’s diner, and her mom is frantically instructing her to grab a bag she had hidden in the wall of her bedroom and run for her life. Terrified and confused, and with two armed men hot on her heels, Lexie follows her mother’s instructions. She arrives late that night to an isolated cabin with only the clothes on her back, a duffle bag full of money, her mom’s old diary, and instructions to stay out of sight until she contacts her. Needless to say, there is a whole lot about her mom that Lexie didn’t know. And what she doesn’t know, just might kill her.

Lexie’s next mystery involves Jackson, the man living in the cabin next door. She is powerfully attracted to him, but is also rightfully paranoid at this point, and jumping at shadows. When he rescues her from an attacker Lexie has to decide if she can trust him, or if he truly dangerous, and sent to get close to her. No doubt, there is a lot more to Jackson than meets the eye. As she reads her mom’s diary a terrifying story is revealed that leaves Lexie questioning everything she ever knew to be true.

I make notes as I’m reading, and as I looked over them to write this review, one phrase popped up over and over. The action was FANTASTIC! Aimee has found her niche! Suspense is apparently her forte, and the action was top notch. I loved the backstory between Mary and John - it was tightly done and a lovely bit of storytelling. As Lexie reads Mary’s diary entries, you can really feel the sense of dread and horror that Mary feels as she becomes more involved. I can’t praise the backstory highly enough. The only thing that seem out of place for me was the whole hullabaloo with Alex, Lexie’s recently dead boyfriend. Lexie’s mourning seemed a little heavy handed, and was pretty much thrown out of the window when Jackson showed up. If Lexie was truly mourning Alex, then I would think she would have more angst over this sudden powerful attraction to Jackson. Unless it’s going to be revealed that Alex’s death was not as random as it seemed, then he could have easily been left out of this story entirely.

Yes, it ends on a cliffhanger, but really, you should have been expecting that. By the time you reach the end of this book you will be desperate to see how the story plays out. I’m anxiously awaiting the arrival of book two!

Degrees Of Distortion by Aimee McNeil is a suspense and thrilling read. There’s also some action in there with a touch of romance.

Although the book had a slow beginning, it soon picked up and I couldn’t put it down. I really like Lexie and Jackson. Lexie is dealing with her own personal pain and struggling to deal with the mess she has found herself in. Jackson has his own mission and his own demons.

There are feels and some sexy time scenes. A great read! I enjoyed this book and I hope there’s a second book. This was my first book by Miss McNeil and I look forward to reading more from her. I give this 4 stars.

This is the first book I have read from this author and I was pulled in right from the beginning. Lexie and Jackson are attracted to each other from the get go.
The secrets and the danger around them makes you wish the pages would turn faster just so you can see what is coming next.
I did enjoy the multiple POV from different characters throughout the book.
I must say the ONE thing I didn't like was the fact that Lexie slept with Alex's brother out of pity. Not because she really wanted to, more like she felt sorry for his pain so she gave in. Hated that part.
Eagerly anticipating what is going to happen with Lexie and Jackson and how they are going to bring down John.

Degrees of Distortion is an astoundingly epic, edge-of-your-seat romantic thriller that will push all your boundaries while daring you to fight for everything you believe in or die trying. This is a painfully dark yet tantalizingly beautiful journey that will shred and then reshape every part of your heart. You will lose yourself without even realizing that it is happening while refusing to avoid the devastating storm baring down on your path. What you think you know will be destroyed before your very eyes, and in its place you will find yourself plunged into a world you hoped would never exist. The only hope of survival is in the last shreds of humanity that you desperately cling to. No matter what keep your eye on the prize or will find yourself drowning in a horrific, never-ending nightmare in the blink of an eye.

Lexie is lost to her grief. She had recently lost the sun in her small world, and she is trying to learn how to live again with its painful absence. Nothing about her is the same as it was before that fateful night. It seems that the harder she tries to fight back against the darkness that threatens to pull her under, the faster she grows numb and feels her strength failing. Just when she thought she could take no more, she finds herself forcibly thrust into a dark and dangerous game of cat and mouse. Not knowing who to trust, she lets her heart lead her to Jackson. While everything about him is shrouded in mystery, she clings to the light that he shines into her shadowed world. Jackson has a mission to accomplish, and he doesn’t need a distraction like Lexie. However, no matter how hard he tries to fight against it, he is helplessly drawn to her like a moth to a flame. What they both discover is a sadistic plot that threatens to unearth more than just an ugly past that Lexie wants no part of. Both Jackson and Lexie find themselves on the precipice of an endless, dark pit that will either eat them whole or find itself undone by the power of love and the fierce light of hope. Are either of them prepared and up to the task for the journey that lies ahead, or will they find the end of everything they hold dear just a few steps away?

I was completely blown away by this incredibly real and tremendously masterful story! This book pushed me so far outside of my literary comfort zone that I wasn’t sure I could finish it. Before I realized what happened, these amazing characters stole my heart and led me on a fantastic journey of deep darkness and pure light. Lexie and Jackson were so much more than I ever imagined. They were beautifully raw, unforgettably gritty, and wonderfully flawed. They made me feel and forced me to face the hardest parts of life that we like to shy away from. I look forward to where the next part of their journey takes me. It won’t be easy and it won’t be pretty, but it will be honest and it all be real.

Amiee McNeil has gifted us a brilliantly written and devastatingly breathtaking masterpiece that will force your eyes open and tear your heart apart. This is a treasure that you will want to share with anyone who has ears to hear and a heart to feel. I can’t wait to see what this incredibly talented author creates next. It will definitely not disappoint!

Degrees of Distortion is not your typical everyday romance novel per say man and woman falling in love and living happily ever after. This book was dark, suspenseful and had me on my feet (so to speak) with every page. It was a a page turner!
The main character Lexie who's life basically ended when her boyfriend, Alex died. Alex gave her blue nail polish and that's all that she has left and she goes to a town named Sugar Hill to retrace his steps. Well this trips turns into more than that and brings the past of her mothers back home with her as she was followed. So her mom tells her to go now and take the bag with her. There's a note and key and a phone for her mother to contact her. So when she goes to this town her neighbor, Jackson is very intimidating but is also hot. Lexie and Jackson's chemistry in this book is intense.

I really liked both Lexie and Jackson. Lexie been through alot and is now dealing with her mother's past and reading about the memories her and Alex had. My oh my, Jackson whose a sexy man, he is a protector, and isn't afraid to kill. There is one character that I didn't like but this book wouldn't be suspenseful if he wasn't in it.
Degrees of Distortion by Aimee McNeil was really intriguing to read. It's the first book I've read by McNeil and it wont be the last. It had my attention from the beginning but it was confusing at times with the different point of views. The writing was very detailed and I liked how she put memories in the stories I felt they were used properly.

This does leave the reader wondering what's going to happen. Cliffhanger- Ahhh, not a big fan of those. Aimee McNeil I need book 2!!

This book had so many feels while reading it. From sadness to smiling to what the heck to I want to punch him in the throat to omg it ended I need to know more!! So if you like dark romance I'd highly recommend giving this book a read!

Parts of the story I liked:

"Why did you pick blue? Because it's called Knockout, and that's how I feel every time I look you-completely knocked out."

"You're like an open book:

"You're scared of me. Your eyes give it away. you swallow a lo, which indicates you are uncomfortable. The color of your skin and the way you keep licking your lips tell me you are also attracted to me."

Plot - 4/5
Characters- 4/5
Heat-3/5

Lexie and her best friend Stephanie decide to take a road trip to help Lexie get over the grief of losing her boyfriend Alex when they stumble into a diner that has a picture of her mother. Only her mother went by another name and the men questioning Lexie and Stephanie seem very dark.

Soon Lexie finds herself on the run with a million questions that need answered. But somehow she finds an ally in her new neighbor, Jackson, who always seems to be there when she needs him. Yet Lexie is torn between her loyalty to Alex and her attraction to Jackson.

When Lexie gets a hold of her mom's diary she soon realizes the trouble she is and knows she is only one step away from disaster. Will she be able to escape from it all or will she fall into the hands of the one person her mom has worked so hard at keeping her away from?

This book is so awesome and I couldn't put it down. I was so happy and disappointed when I got to the end and realized another book was coming. I was excited in that there was going to be more story but sad that I knew I was going to have to wait for the next one.

I loved the turmoil that encompassed Lexie through the book. She was in a state of wanting to remain in a place with Alex but a part of her really needed to live and move on. Yet she had no idea what was in store for her with the small mistake that her and Stephanie made. I was mad at Lexie for reaching out to Stephanie in that it led the people straight to her. I yelled as I knew bad stuff would come from it.

Jackson was a mystery and as more came to light I began to understand more and more and I really hope he takes part of the blame for everything that went down and that they catch the traitor. I can't believe he took Evan with him and that seems like it will be an interesting relationship with Evan's own issues.

I am so scared for Stephanie and for Beth!!

So looking forward to the next book and it can't come soon enough!

OMGGGGG….the people who know me, it’s no secret that I love suspense. This book has just blew a lot of those other suspense books out of the park. This book is full of deceit, lies and secrets, which leave you wondering which way to turn and who to really trust.

Lexie is grieving, the loss of what was the love of her life Alex. While on a cross country search for what seems an impossible find for nail polish, she stumbles upon something much more sinister than not finding a colour to help your memories.
Before she knows it, secrets are being divulged abot ger mothers dark past and an escape plan is being planned.
Enter Jackson Finlay, neighbour, cop, handyman, but also hot, Lexie has pull to Jackson, but can Lexie let her body control her mind and forget Alex? Before Lexie knows what’s happening, there’s bullets flying and they’re on the road again, escaping a past she doesn’t know about but she will soon learn how dangerous life can be…

This is a fast paced story, filled from beginning to end, happening all in the space of a few days. This will have you rooted to the chair because you will want to know what happens.
The prologue left me reeling and I struggled to put this book down. This is told in third person but this so well written that you meet all the main characters and you don’t get lost in the story at all. This is the first book I’ve had the pleasure of reading of Aimee McNeil but it definitely won’t be the last!

This is the first book to the Degrees of Distortion series and I can’t wait for book 2.
This is a must read if you like romantic suspense. A definite page turner and it will most definitely leave you wanting more…

I give Dregrees of Distortion 4 stars, only because it confused me a lot at the beginning. The writing is great, the story is dark, my curiosity was peaked and the author managed to keep me wanting to turn page after page to find out what was next.

Aimee McNeil has intertwined the lives of many characters, both good and evil. There is romance, mystery, suspense, fear, loss and confusion, many twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Lexie looses her long time boyfriend Alex and is grieving, even his brother, Evan, can't get over the loss. When Lexie and Stephanie go on a trip to retrace the steps from her last trip with Alex, they discover a secret that determines the rest of their journey...

Lexie's mom's past comes to light and sends her on another road trip with no idea of what to do and who she can trust. In comes Jackson, sexy bad-boy cop, and turns Lexie's world upside down, and provides the reader with some steamy scenes. Then we're introduced to John, true evil, and the story opens up...

What's next for this cast of characters? Will Jackson save the day? Where's Stephanie? And John...is he or isn't he?

You will meet many characters along the way, some you will like and others you will not, but I guarantee you'll want to continue reading to find out where it leads. I really enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down, and look forward to what is next.

Wow.. this book was NOT what I expected what so ever. And it left me begging for more! Lexie had been through some really tragic stuff with losing her boyfriend. So take a trip to try and get yourself back or at the very least a part of him. What she didn't expect was the roller coaster that ensued. The past comes back to haunt Lexie's mom and it turns Lexie's world upside down. Enter Jackson. Totally tough as nails but sin on a stick. When things start to unravel even further, she has to put her trust in him and ohhhhh does she ever.
What I really loved about this book was the twists and turns involved and the omg factor. I really enjoy a book that gives me that intrigue but gives me that spiciness too. I seriously need to get my hands on the second book in the series stat though! I NEED ANSWERS!!!

I love finding new authors especially ones with the talent that Aimee McNeil possesses. This book was a nail biter and it kept me completely on edge the entire book! I love books that keep me guessing and this was just that book. It was full of suspense, mystery, twisted characters and some smoking chemistry between the two main characters. Lets not forget that the heroine has been dealing with so much grief after losing her boyfriend which Aimee did such an amazing job writing. I could feel her pain and she had my heart clenching in my chest.

I highly recommend this book, it is a book that you won't want to put down. I seriously cannot wait to get my hands on the rest of this series. It is a must read and definitely worth the read for sure!

It's not what I was completely expecting definitely more suspense than romance but I was delighted to get a bit of steam from this story. I feel like this story is the slow build up to what is to come next. Lexie has a lot of things to learn about herself that she's never known, some she learns on her own and some from her mother.

I was curious throughout the majority of the story of what would happen? and Why do they want her? and now What will happen next? I'm intrigued and I can't wait to see what will happen in the next book. I'm left completely un sure of what's going to happen to Lexie, and I want to get into that book two stat.

Fans of suspenseful, darkish romance reads will loves this series and I recommend adding it to your TBR or starting it today!

Lexie is on a mission to find a particular colour of nail polish. A boyfriend who died protecting her bought it for her, and she has worn it ever since. She retraced the journey they were on, and it leads her to discover something about her mother's past.
This unfortunately brings a very dangerous man into all their lives, and she has to go into hiding.
Jackson is a cop with revenge in mind. He has an obsession with trying to find the person who killed his father. He will let no-one stand in his way.
A very tense thriller with sex rather than romance. The villain is a very powerful man with unlimited resources.
Please be warned it has a cliffhanger ending, which I wasn't expecting. I now have to read the next book ASAP. A very enjoyable read.

The only other title I've read by this author was Catching Fox and because I could tell this was going to be a darker read, I wasn't sure how I was going to fare the reading of this book -- because Catching Fox was NOT dark.

I won't say I was surprised to find I enjoyed this story, because I enjoyed Catching Fox and I fell for this author's writing style. But I was surprised at how dark Ms. McNeil could go. The suspense and angst you feel as a reader were drawn out extremely well; this book does end with a cliffhanger, though. It's a well-written cliff though, leaving this reader excited for more!

This is my second book to read by Aimee McNeil. And let me just say that she is one of those authors I want to scream at the world to read her books! Her writing is beautiful and her characters are complex, and I never find myself bored with the story. I'm always wondering what is going to happen next and what route she's going to take us as the reader on.

Degrees of Distortion is a book full of suspense, twists and turns, and secrets. I loved every page of it. That ending though....whoa! Now I'm ready for book two!

Pretty good read

This book keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole way and the list between Lexie and Jackson is steamy with a hint of something deeper. Very thrilling. The way the author drops you hanging off a cliff at the end should be a crime so I suggest pre ordering the 2nd book before u finish this because you will be dying to known what happens to Lexie her mother and Stephanie.

Lexi and her friend go on a road trip in search of the shade of nail polish that Lexi's late boyfriend bought her once. Lexi ends up on the run after finding out a secret about her mother. So many twists and turns in this book but they kept me on the edge of my seat and my stomach in knots, but I loved every second of it. This was my first book by Aimee McNeil and I can't wait to find out what happens in book 2.

This is the first book by this author that i have read. I must say that I am very intrigued with her writing. This book is full of suspense, and is steamy. This book for me was a real page turner. I didn't want to put it down. If you have not read any of her work I would suggest starting with this one! I have not read her other books but I will be looking them up!

Degrees of Distortion

It was a good book and good writing but it is a cliffhanger. I'm usually very careful and don't get books that are not complete so I missed this one. Probably it's a 4 or 5 star when you get to the end.
