George Adams, a young attorney, enacts a repeated dream by appearing naked in a public place. This leads to his being referred to psychiatric treatment. At his first appointment, he meets his therapist, who is a medical student doing a psychiatric rotation. He is being supervised by an eccentric psychiatrist. During the course of the story, George and Harvey, the therapist, learn to play polo, become entwined in relationships outside the treatment room, and become friends. Harvey's grandfather, Cassius, becomes a prominent player in the story, as does Harvey's friend Moravia and her mother.
