An action-packed stand-alone novel from The New Homefront Series!
As the fifth book in The New Homefront Series, Viking One serves as a stand-alone novel, chronicling the apparently orchestrated collapse of our fragile, modern world from the perspective of Jim and Lori Rutherford and friends, as their small town of Delaware City, Delaware begins to feel the noose tighten around them. As a preparedness-minded individual, Jim and crew, working together with friends, neighbors, and local authorities, try to secure their beloved town while keeping their minds open to the possibility of fleeing if the extent of the collapse is as great as they fear.
Join them, along with characters from The Last Layover, as they struggle to maintain the security of their town while hanging on to every last thread of hope and humanity.
If you like action-packed, SHTF, TEOTWAWKI, prepper, collapse-of-society, or survival fiction, check out Viking One as well as the rest of The New Homefront Series, the Society Lost Series, and the newly released Breaking the Beast Series by Steven Bird.
Viking One is written as a stand-alone novel and doesn’t require that the reader has read other books in the series, although readers who have read the preceding four books will appreciate the character overlaps.

Jim Rutherford and a close circle of his friends are as prepared as anyone could be for a disaster. Once it hits they find themselves with limited options once Delaware City becomes overrun by terrorists. Thanks to Judith Hoskins, they have a small boat to carry additional supplies when they head out to sea. But, the ocean is not immune to criminal behavior.
Bird’s fifth novel in The New Homefront series, Viking One, can be read as a stand-alone novel. It steps away from the story of Evan and Jason while keeping to the same universe. The two stories dovetail into one another. The escape to the ocean was a nice change to the overland adventure.
I don’t know if Bird plans to continue their story and have them meet up with the folks in Tennessee, but I certainly hope he does. I have loved every moment of this series.
This is a stand-alone novel in the New Homefront series. It’s more or less a prequel that documents the state of the country and in a more local sense the situation in the small town of Delaware City, Delaware prior to the collapse. If you read or listened to the first four books you will recognize some of the characters and situations. This is a good if seriously right-wing tale of preparedness and survival in our country’s current social and political climate. Wonderful characters, great story, excellent closure. Patrick Freeman continues to do an excellent job of narration.
Enjoyed all 5 books but this last one, seem to be some kind of a mistake as it repeated a story in part from the first. I almost thought i had read this book before but i persevered and finished. However it left me cold as i do not know what happen to all the folks on the Homestead but i did enjoy the others very much. I liked that fact that they are decently written with no offensive language. I will read other books STEVE BIRD will write. So depend on me Steve, i will buy more.
I was very impressed with Steven's first set of books. Now we are looking at the situation through new eyes and new dreams. Anxious to see how these added characters get woven into the action.
Very fast paced action and interesting description of gear and the like. I enjoyed it. Would have liked a little more character development if I had to choose an area to be improved.
I love books that don't follow the planned out course, where your characters have to change their thoughts and directions because of unforseen instances . Makes the book real. Great read.
This stand alone novel is just as good as the Homefront novels from this author. Great characters well played out events and a book that is difficult to put aside. Loved it
Steven Bird always spins a great read. This books does take off from the one before it for about 13 chapter's into the book, so it could be read as a stand alone.
In this installment, we are better acquainted with the Rutherford family and their group of readiness friends. An excellent, fast paced story of the escape on the high seas from Delaware City.
Jim and Lori and a group of friends have the perfect place to live in mind in case the apocalypse comes as feared. Plans don’t work out that way. Interesting read.
A really good story about a SHTF scenario where all you can trust are those closest to you. Add in a nautical theme and it will bring you to a unique environment full of dangers you won't usually find on land.
This isn't a cooperative survival story line. Us vs them. Unnecessary assault description, more detail compared to other situations. There are better books on the same topic/theme.
No your typical end of the world story, but very entertaining. And not complementary to the government either. But I liked it and looking forward to the next one.
I love everything Steve Bird writes. I almost definitely a fan for life! I loved how this book was standalone, but incorporated our friends from the first book. Keep writing, Steve!
This was a very well written book that I had fun reading. It was a stand alone book, but it gave me the idea that there could be a continuation. I recommend this book.
