This book is the very essence of Jupiter. From its apt title, to its generous use of many famous chart examples, to Arroyo's trademark insight and wisdom on every page, "Exploring Jupiter" is positively a winner! The presentation of the astrology is clear, practical and intelligent, making it a must for both newer students and more experienced practising astrologers. Unlike the majority of modern astrologers, Arroyo refers to Jupiter's ancient rulership of Pisces as being significant, and the book is written with this in mind. As always with Stephen Arroyo, it is the clarity and profound depth of these guidelines for interpretation that is so striking. The chapter on transits involving Jupiter is particularly good, building on ideas he has expressed in earlier writings.
Stephen Arroyo (born October 6, 1946 in Kansas City, Missouri) is an American author and astrologer.[1]
Arroyo has written seven books on psychologically oriented astrology which outline his theory that the individual’s experience of the Solar System’s impacts on their personal energy field, both psychological and physical. His works recast astrological concepts in psychological terms, and reject what he perceives as the fatalism and negativity of old-fashioned astrology. His books have now been translated into 20 languages.
With my Moon in Sagittarius in the 3rd house, I tend to understand the world through Jupiterian lenses. So maybe I am biased, but I thoroughly enjoyed Arroyo's perspective on the heaviest planet (which is ironically associated with levity and optimism).
What is commendable about this book is that it doesn't cloak Jupiter in the cliche robes of jovial beneficence. It presents a rather objective and balanced view (which is expected, considering Arroyo's airy liberal - pun intended - chart) of the significance of a Jupiterian emphasis in the birth chart.
I would recommend this book primarily to professional (or amateur) astrologers. However, I'm sure, it would be a fairly enjoyable cup of tea for any Jovian out there too.
"Excessive Jupiter energy or a poorly integrated Jupiterian attunement can result in a person always overstepping the immediate situation that exists in the present and wildly scattering energy into activities that will only be relevant in the distant future. For example, a would-be author who makes lists of book titles when not one book is yet written......"
Me: *reads astrology books to get called out*
Books: *call me out*
Me: Ah, if it isn't the consequences of my own actions-
Following "spoilers" are just my highlights that I want to revisit without having to check the ebook again and not actual spoilers.
solid volume on jupiter. feels like an appropriately inverted version of Liz Greene’s book on Saturn - similar structure, and both provide good ancient & modern context for their respective planets.
Arroyo adopts a warm, friendly tone for this one, and I think it works. It’s a good bit different from the more reserved tone I’m used to from the CPA books, but it fits the material.
Would recommend to anyone to anyone looking for a deeper dive into Jupiter & its significations.
Arroyo is the absolute best in his field. His genius mind is definitely something transcendental. However, I wish he would have worked with more complex themes, than Jupiter, like in his book on transformation. This is the reason behind me only giving 4 stars, even though I know that Jupiterian aspects are very optimistic, but I think some more complex themes get us closer to the truth.
