I’ve been reading ‘Red Sonja’ for years and this is hands-down the most F.U.N. ‘Sonja’ comic I’ve EVER read. The She-Devil finds herself in Central Park on a freezing winter night, bereft of her weapons and unable to speak the local language … and tells herself ‘I’ve been in worse situations’. What follows is 15 odd pages of fun, restoring Sonja as a force to be reckoned with; Gail Simone’s run had Sonja getting beaten up by bouncers and even smacked on the arse by opponents mid-combat but Amy Chu’s Sonja is BADASS. She catches herself a goose for dinner (and presumably eats it raw), then goes to a bar in Harlem and proceeds to crush all the huge guys in there at armwrestling without any effort. Despite putting her stealth to good use earlier, she can’t help but attract attention with her looks and superhuman strength and her enemies catch her antics on social media. She then knocks back 120 beers and passes out with her new buddies. Enemy thugs find her and we get a short but nice fight on our hands, with Sonja walking the dog all over a couple of 300lb thugs. The issue finishes with some funny and surprisingly sweet and sensitive scenes at Max’ apartment, revealing a bit about his background, and with Sonja displaying more empathy than she did in the entirely of Gail Simone’s run. Amy’s Sonja is just so likeable … instead of the surly and sex-crazy grouch Simone gave us, Amy’s Sonja is positive, she makes friends easily and she cares about other people. Just an awesome issue, start to finish – it really doesn’t get any better than this IMO.

I will admit that I was skeptical when I heard that the new Red Sonja series would take place on modern day Earth. This series has surprised me. There is a sense of fun that keeps things moving along. There is action and the "fish out of water" moments are competently done. The art has a modern comics look which fits the story. I enjoy it.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to keep reading Red Sonja after the runs by Gail Simone and Marguerite Bennett ended, but this is a genuinely entertaining romp and my favourite of the titles on my pull list this week. Sonja, trapped on Earth by Kulan Gath, discovers things like indoor plumbing, beer on draught and television.
