One year after Jakob Ludwig Karl Grimm started studying law at the University of Marburg, his younger brother, German author Wilhelm Karl Grimm, followed.

In 1825, Wilhelm married Henriette Dorothea Wild, also known as Dortchen. Together they parented four children: Jakob Grimm (1826-1826), Herman Friedrich Grimm (1828-1901), Rudolf Georg Grimm (1830-1889), and Auguste Luise Pauline Marie (1832-1919).

From 1837 to 1841, the Grimm brothers joined five of their colleague professors at the University of Göttingen to form a group, known as the Göttinger sieben. They protested against Ernst August, king of Hanover, whom they accused of violating the constitution. The king fired all seven professors.

Wilhelm Grimm died in Berlin.

The stories in this collection are very strangely written and the pacing is bizarre. Some of them just don't make much sense. Some are entertaining and funny in a weird way, but overall the book was not for me.

I received a copy of this from a Goodreads giveaway.

There are some fairytales in here that are probably very familiar to most people, but even in those fairytales are little details that may still come as a surprise. About half of the fairytales were new to me, some tales were slightly familiar, while some have been retold often.

What really adds to this book and makes it worthy of adding to a collection are the illustrations. Yann Legendre’s illustrations are amazing. In one illustration, the branches and leaves of a tree also form a woman’s face, making you take a second glance. Lance Rutter’s ornaments and borders also add some great details. It’s obvious that a lot of work has gone into the visual aspect of this reimagined collection of fairytales, and I love it. The design of this book is eye-catching and really would look great on any bookshelf.

I would have given this five stars but in my opinion there were some problems with the editing and flow for some tales.

The brothers Jacob and Willhelm Grimm had my childhood dream job of traveling around and listening to stories told by grandmothers. Right up there with Aesop‘s fables, this collection of classic fairytales should be on every child’s bookshelf. There are a few here that I was never entirely familiar with until very recently. The ones that everyone’s familiar with or should be such as “Tom Thumb”, “Hantzel and Gretel”, Rumpelstiltskin”, “the frog prince” are all here in short bedtime story length. The book is very sparsely illustrated in black-and-white lithograph form. This book alone, contains at least several years of bedtime stories. Highly recommend this book.

To the discard pile.
It's sad, because the illustrations are phenomenal. But it has the same issue as every Grimms book - the poor storytelling.
Cinderella is the best example of this - two pages of the story are the exact same paragraphs with slight changes.
While I love the concept of staying true to the original text, that doesn't mean it has to be the original text.

I love the illustrations in this book - they really help you envision Grimm's tales. And the book is full of stories you are familiar with from Disney.

My teenage friend who devours mythology, sci-fi and fantasy said this book is a very good retelling of the old stories. He was quite impressed with the illustrations.
