I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

This was amazing! I was really curious about what this book would be, I know, it is about signs for babies and toddlers, but how would they show us these signs, and what words would be featured.

It was super-interesting, and at moments like this I wish I had a little kid myself so I could see if these signs would really help and if my kid would be able to do them. I will definitely remember this book, if I ever have a kid I will try these out. I would love to see my little one tell me what they want through signs.

Some of the signs are really basic (like up, sleep, or eat), but there are some that are a bit more advanced. The words selected for the ABC’s are the basic ones (well, except for zoo, but I guess they had to pick a z word and zoo is something kids love). Some examples are eat, water, yes, no. As you can see words that you need often in daily life.

I had lots of fun trying to figure out how to do some of the signs. I am glad I am not anywhere near people when I read the book, or else people may have looked at me funny.

Next to the ABC’s the book also lists various other important signs, like father, mother, cat, etc. I loved that they added those, I quite missed those while reading and coming across the letters for those words, and was already thinking how important those are for a kid. Thankfully they added them.

The art is quite a fun art. It is cute, and I adore the colours that the illustrator used. Plus they really took care of adding little details, backgrounds, and more.

I would highly recommend this one to everyone.

Engel, Christiane ABC Baby Signs. BOARD BOOK. Walter Foster Jr (Quarto Publishing Group), 2017. $17. 9781633223660

This book teaches you 26 signs that are great to learn to communicate with your baby before they can talk. It gives visuals and written instructions to teach you the signs that can help you communicate with your baby.

I love the creativity with the rhyming poems for each letter and the cute illustrations. I think this is such a great way to teach baby signs to parents and for young children to be able to communicate before they learn to talk. I think the author does a great job of teaching signs you will use every day.

I thought this book was an extremely good idea. Every parent should teach their baby to sign simple communication. Children take years to learn how to talk not because they do not understand, but because talking requires fine motor control in several tiny organs, most of which you cannot see, all of which have to work in concert with one another. Signing on the other hand is usually based around larger movements of limbs that you can see, it does not require things working in concert nearly as much, many signs are understandable even if performed poorly, it is far easier to learn and do at a young age. Not to mention, then the population of those who know how to communicate in basic sign would increase which would make it all around better for the deaf community and easier for them to communicate in general.

On the other hand, this book showed the inherent limitations to the medium of two dimensional representation and how it doesn't convey the dynamism of sign language. I am terrible at deciphering charts and flow charts, anything with arrows and lines, really, always have been, always will be. I didn't understand half of what these signs wanted me to do. What direction am I supposed to move? What way am I supposed to rotate, left? right? How many times? None of that stuff can be made clearly in a book format.

This book really brought to home to me how important it is that we start translating books into sign language in video format. There is an effort to make a signed Bible in a series of videos right now, which I think is fantastic and wonderful, but we should be doing it for every classic book, and eventually every book. At least until we are successful in completely curing deafness so that either no one is born deaf, or we can treat every form of deafness from birth. I applaud each and every person who is making free youtube videos translating children's books into ASL. They are doing wonderful work, and I hope more people do it.

This really hit me hard because I was volunteering at a camp this week and there was one girl who was deaf. She has cochlear implants, but ASL is still her native language, and it is not the same as English. The camp director's wife is one of two nationally certified ASL interpreters on the Western slope of Colorado, and it was one of the coolest things to watch her translate everything...all day...twenty-four-seven for this teenager. I seriously felt for her. What she did was amazing. Amazingly kind, amazingly gifted, and amazingly difficult. Simultaneous translation is so tiring. It's so hard. The speaker you are translating for rarely considers that he should slow down, or input breaks to allow you to catch up. Languages don't have the same grammar structure. If I am translating from Japanese to English, they have nearly the opposite structure. English is Subject Verb Object (SVO) whereas Japanese is SOV (and usually missing the S which has to be inferred from context). I have to wait until the end of the sentence to know what verb the person is trying to say, and by the time they get there, when they have a really long sentence, I've already forgotten what the beginning was. I'm great at learning languages. I pick them up really quickly, and without a whole lot of effort. But interpreting? I'm terrible at it. It takes years of practice. It's not just 'I speak Spanish ergo I can interpret for someone'. It's an art that requires training and practice to become good at, and I was in awe of this woman for what she did. We need more people translating books into sign-language(s) in video format.

Anyway, this book is a great idea, but the medium didn't really support the idea, unfortunately. You would be way better off watching ASL, or whatever sign language is used in your country, instruction videos on youtube than you would be reading this book. Sign language is inherently dynamic and uses quite a bit of space, but it is incredibly difficult to illustrate that in two dimensional form and even harder to emulate it correctly. It's far easier to just watch a video and imitate the person in the video.

Story: Dictionary-with poems
Art: Adorable
Price: 16.95!!!

I was going to up it a star for the art, but then I saw the price. Nope. Definitely go to youtube. It's a better medium and it's free!

This is an absolutely brilliant idea for a book - simple head gestures for communicating with babies that are yet to learn to talk, allowing babies to communicate with their hands before they have learned the words to do so. There is one sign per letter of the alphabet, with lovely clear graphics and easy-to-read text, as well as very simple to understand diagrams of how to perform the actions; the arrows help to show exactly what you should be doing with your heads. Some of these gestures are ones that parents would perform anyway, but there are some great ideas for other ones which might not have been thought of. This is a fabulous book which I would definitely recommend!

(Thanks NetGalley for this copy).

A lovely well thought out book on baby signs.
Just a heads up, saying you go through the alphabet does not mean that you will learn letter signs though. I found that a little confusing.
Still all the basic needed signs for baby are in this really cute board book. My youngest child ended up in speech therapy and learning signs was a huge help for us. I wish I had this book when she was younger. I read this to her today (4 years old) and it was a really fun reminder of things we had forgotten. She really enjoyed the pictures and that each description of the sign told a story and rhymed a little.
Would make a wonderful baby/toddler gift.

Great book for learning sign language with and teaching sign language to your baby and toddler. I enjoyed the format traveling through the alphabet for each new word/sign. The rhyme scheme that accompanies each new word/alphabet letter will draw in young children. The descriptions are good, and the ease of figuring out the signs means you'll be able to put them into practice more quickly.

ABC for Me: ABC Baby Signs is an awesome way to learn some basic sign language for you and your littles. With colorful pictures and your usual alphabet book format, this board book is a fun way to engage in early communication skills. Plus, there are extra signs at the back of the book for family members (both human and furry).

This is a new favorite board book!

I loved the illustrations. Some of the directions were a bit difficult to understand. It would be nice if it came with a DVD. But the concept of a sign for every letter of the alphabet is awesome. I’m going to recommend that our library buy this!

Bright engaging board book to introduce little communicators how to speak with their hands. My own children were eager signers from a very young age and it gave them a way to speak months before they were gaining verbal traction. Teaching children to sign is a pedagogical accent that prevents frustration and allows for engaging early!
