From first page to last, Kirby is a fast-paced, joyful celebration of romance and going after what you want. With an adept hand, Samantha Anne immersed me in the New York City setting and portrayed true to life the up and down experiences of the main character.

Life takes an abrupt turn on the first day of Rachel Sirianni's dream job and she has to rethink how she'll survive in New York City. As her life makes another turn when she takes a second job -- one she'd rather keep secret -- the story moves at a peppy pace and new dimensions of Rachel's character are revealed. Further complications occur when her night-job intersects with Joe Pavon, a man she refers to as Hottie McCoffeehouse. He's larger-than-life gorgeous. Living two lives weighs heavily on her as a relationship with Joe grows exponentially for both of them. However, both of them are keeping secrets that threaten the relationship and could explode it all apart.

Caught up in the story I didn't want to put down, I felt Rachel's pain, cheered for her pluckiness, felt like kicking Joe when he hurt her, and ended up crying for both of them. With detailed and gripping descriptions and well-crafted, witty dialogue, Samantha Anne tells a beautiful, sexy, and smart tale of living and loving large.

This is one of the best contemporary romances I’ve ever read. I was hooked from page one—the storyline revolving around the heroine, Rachel, seeking a job in the publishing industry one I found extremely interesting—but then Ms. Anne threw in her twist: Rachel’s alter-ego, Kirby, the sex-line operator. Ms. Anne’s voice was cute and quirky without being vapid, which can be an unfortunate by-product of contemporary romance. Rachel’s interactions with the other characters showed off her personality in the best light, leaving the reader with the feeling that Rachel was a friend. And don’t even get me started on Joe, the hunky 6’5” dreamcicle from Michigan with his aw-shucks manners and kissing prowess. This book is surprisingly sweet in the heat level for having a heroine who is a sex-line operator. I can’t help but wish I got to see how amazing Joe is in the bedroom, but in the end, I guess it makes sense that only Rachel is privy to that information. Joe’s just old-fashioned like that.

Rachel is an aspiring junior editor, Joe is a big handsome piece of man candy, and Kirby, well Kirby is a surprise. You'll have to read to find out.
Kirby is a light, fun read with a sexy, sweet romance at the heart of it. I rooted for Rachel and I fell in love with Joe. I read a LOT of romance, so any time one stands out to me it's a miracle. I enjoyed the interesting setting (publishing), the intense chemistry between Rachel and Joe, and the fun, readable voice of its author. All in all, this is a great story with engaging, sympathetic characters.

I will attempt to write this review with as few spoilers as possible. If you catch a spoiler I do apologize in advance.

If you are a fan of stories, which I assume you are if you are an active member of Goodreads, then you know how crucial it is to have your attention grabbed within the first few moments. This book does just that. Rachel is such an interesting character. She is so easy to relate to that the reader can effortlessly see things from her perspective. I found seeing Rachel as myself while the story played out in my head and the words melted away into my own personal internal movie.

The scenes came alive as my eyes quickly soaked in every word. The smells and sounds of each setting came alive the further I fell into the book. All of this and then BAM! Hottie McCoffeehouse arrives and have mercy. How can one not swoon over such a description of a tall dark and handsome man? I fell for him right alongside Rachel. To say there is sexual tension seems an understatement. I found myself wanting to scream at them to just rip each other's clothes off already.

And then we have Kirby. Who doesn't wish they had a personality like Kirby? What would Kirby do indeed?

I smiled, I laughed out loud, I teared up. All things I enjoy while reading. All and all it was a decent quick read and I am excited for what more is in store for Rach and Hottie McCoffeehouse.

Favorite quote: If he can’t handle being with you at your worst, then he sure as hell doesn’t deserve you at your best.

I just finished this story today and I have to admit I am a little unsure as to how to review. I did enjoy this story. I liked the scene setting of the publishing house, the girl power, the nasty junior editor, and I really liked Rachel and Joe. But the use of coincidence that occurs over and over, one after the other, to put Rachel in the path of Joe--well there were just too many. I can’t even go on and on about them because they would definitely be considered spoilery.

In fact, I’d completely ruin the story by mentioning any aspect of these coincidences. The story plays a bit on the theme of mistaken or false identity, when Rachel takes a job as a phone sex operator and her alter ego, Kirby, picks up a call from a man who Rachel/Kirby instantly knows is Joe. Of course the right thing to do would have been to come clean, but as Kirby she would always know exactly how Joe felt about her. Not cool, I know- I also knew that this would end up being the cause of this couple questioning their relationship.

I wish the secondary story arc involving Rachel’s boss Michelle could have been expanded. I found myself really looking forward to scenes where Michelle and Rachel interact. The reader knows that Michelle is worthless and had to have come by her position because of previous assistants who made her look good. But Rachel wasn’t in it to make Michelle look good, she wanted to prove herself. Ultimately, Michelle’s actions instigate her own demise.

Predictable and full of coincidences, but a cute enjoyable story with a sweet HEA.

I can see myself joining the unpopular opinion crew on this one, frankly. Why? Because I hated the movie Serendipity, which most women my age seemed to adore and think was the most romantic thing ever. The idea that the heroine decided to leave everything up to fate and not get the hero’s number immediately irked the crap out of me. You’ve just met a great guy and you’re going to let him get away, just to prove that fate will lead you back to each other? It’s a dumbass move, so really, the whole movie didn’t work for me. (Even though I adore John Cusak. But I digress…)

Kirby didn’t rely on serendipity as a concept per se, but it did rely on the idea of a relationship between the hero, Joe, and the heroine, Rachel, being kismet. Kismet is a kind of serendipity, in my opinion, in that no matter what happens, these two souls will be brought together in the end. Well, I guess I’m just a grumpy old lady for not believing that kind of thing can happen anywhere outside of a rom com.

Now, that’s not to say that the whole novel didn’t work. Here’s what I thought worked really well:

1. The whole idea of Rachel needing extra money and taking a job as a phone sex operator is kind of hilarious. It’s the kind of thing I would expect to see in a rom com starring Kate Hudson or (enter name of other young, plucky starlet here).

2. Rachel as a heroine is very relateable. She’s the kind of girl you’d want to be friends with. Rachel would drive you to the airport, bring you ice cream and booze after a breakup, and would never steal your boyfriend. She’s just an all-around good person. But she’s not such a goody-goody that I got irritated with her as a character. There was balance to her character, and I appreciated that.

3. Joe’s a decent hero, too. He’s not an alphahole, and in romance these days, that’s something to be celebrated. It makes Joe a bit of a romance hero unicorn.

4. I think one of the markers of a good romantic comedy novel is whether or not you could envision it on the big screen, and this one definitely reads like a popular rom com chick flick.

5. It’s a slow burn. This isn’t a couple that immediately jumps into bed together. I can always appreciate a good slow-burn romance.

6. This is a sweet, easy read. Very low angst.

Here’s what didn’t work for me (again, keep in mind I’m a grumpy old lady who hated the movie Serendipity and doesn’t believe in the entire concept of kismet):

1. The number of times Rachel literally bumped into Joe and almost fell down is too high for my liking. Really, this should never happen to a romance heroine more than once in a story. Ever. If that kept happening in real life, the dude would think she was drunk, or had some kind of inner ear infection that was impacting her balance. Either way, it’s not cute.

2. In a city as large as New York, I find it super hard to believe that Rachel and Joe would keep getting thrown together. It tripped my bullshit meter several times.

3. No dude EVER calls a phone sex line just to chat with someone about his day. I don’t care how new to town he is, or how lonely he is, that’s just NOT DONE. And why didn’t Joe realize who “Kirby” was immediately? No one sounds THAT different on the phone.

4. Instalove. There’s no way around it. Just because these two didn’t fall immediately into bed together doesn’t mean their relationship wasn’t instalove-y. I have very little patience for instalove.

5. While I love that Joe isn’t an alphahole, there’s a fine line between a nice-guy beta hero and an insecure wuss. There was a time or two when Joe toed the line a bit more than I would have liked with his insecurities.

But, overall, if you’re in the mood for a light, fluffy rom com, and if you liked the movie Serendipity (or even the old-time Rock Hudson/Doris Day romps), you should probably consider giving this one a try.

Rachel is on the rise for a great job. After a set of, hilarious, in my opinion, setbacks she is late for the first day that leads to her not getting the job she wants. This sets her back in pay, so she ends up with a second job as, insert gasp, a phone sex operator. Through some wild luck a strange man, only known as Joe, that she keeps bumping into comes into her life. She is on her way up, slowly, but surely. She learns the hard way that sometimes you have to fall before you can rise.

I loved this book. It's like fate had it all figured out and Rachel had no chance against it. This story was written well. It was funny and witty and full of drama and romance. I haven't read much romance lately, but very much enjoyed this one. I would love to see more of Rachel and Joe!!!

*I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Rachel Sirianni has big dreams of becoming an editor for Equinox Publishing. She finally lands her job interview and the morning of….well everything that can go wrong does. Showing up to the interview a little late lands her in a different and lower paying position that she cannot refuse since she has always dreamed of working for the company. With that in mind she must also take a second job just to pay her bills.

Rachel’s second job brings out her alter ego. Being a phone sex operator will bring out sides to Rachel that she just had no idea existed, but might just help her land the man of her dreams, except for the fact that she has absolutely no time for a relationship.

“Joe had already thrown her portion of the universe into a tizzy. When she wasn’t working she was thinking about him, and when she was sleeping she was dreaming about him. And she went weak at the knees any time she even imagined his hands and mouth on her. Who the hell do you think you are, Joe?”

Joe is a writer that is trying to get published at Equinox Publishing but his world is turned upside down when he keeps running into Rachel at the coffee house and then ends up getting set up on a blind date with her. Joe is a big man that has no trouble getting women but struggles to get the one that he really wants. That is until his Rachel meets her inner Kirby.

“You’re everything that I want. You’re kind, talented, beautiful, funny, and your spaghetti sauce? I can’t live just walk away from that can I?”

This book was a great and fun read for me. She is living two separate lives that are bound to collide and cause fireworks and boy do they! Rachel is more of a responsible adult that knows what she wants out of life and is determined to live her dreams. Her alter ego Kirby is more sassy and imaginative than Rachel would ever be.

Her relationship with Joe is just what she wants in life but comes to blows when she decides to be honest about who she really is and what her second job really is. With that being said this book had my full attention from the first page to the last. The writing is great and the storyline just flows perfectly.

I think Kirby is a great read for anyone no matter what genre you prefer. I know I really loved this book.

My Favorite Moment: I love the conversations that Rachel has with her best friend Cami.

“Oh, please – Rach, let’s examine the evidence here! You bump into him twice, and both times he’s got you weak at the knees. Of the ninety-nine other girls he could get when calling a phone sex line, he gets you. My brother sets you up on a blind date, and it’s him. You really don’t see it yet?”

Rachel laughed louder. “See what, Cami?”

Camille smiled knowingly. “Kismet.”

My Favorite Laughable Moment: It is very true that you just do not mess with a girl’s best friend.

“Excuse me, it’s Camille. And I’ve known her for over ten years. And if you knew even the slightest bit about her, you’d know that she doesn’t have a malicious bone in her body. She’s not a liar, Joe. This isn’t something she just does. She was embarrassed about a job she needed to take to make ends meet. She was even more embarrassed when you called. Rachel knew your voice and remembered your name even then. And if you want to know the truth, I think she was already crazy about you. Although I can’t imagine why, you take horrible photos.”

Kismet: A power that is believed to control what happens in the future to believe; Fate

Twenty-seven year old Rachel Sirianni is a New York native with dreams. Her dream is to become an editor for Equinox Publishing. Landing an interview, her dream is about to come true until one morning anything that can go wrong, goes wrong. The position and interview she worked her tail off to get slips through her fingers. She is offered a position at the bottom but hey, at least she has her foot in the door. Problem is, it isn’t going to pay her bills.
With no other choice , she is forced to get a second job and the one she finds is at night, so it works perfect for her and doesn’t interfere with her day job. Until she can get her career in order, she has sworn off men. Rachel struggles to maintain the two lives she has created for herself, her own and her alter ego, Kirby. Kirby brings out the side of Rachel she never knew existed, but then again it is easy to be someone else behind closed doors. Kirby is everything Rachel isn’t, sassy, imaginative, a great listener and a bit of a fireball.
Little did Rachel know that her life was about to change, when she literally runs into Joe.

“Oh, please-Rach, let’s examine the evidence here! You bump into twice, and both times he’s got you weak at the knees. Of ninety-nine other girls he could get when calling, he gets you. My brother sets you up on a blind date and it’s him. You really don’t see it yet?”
Rachel laughed louder. “See what, Cami?”
Camille smiled knowingly. “Kismet.”

Joe is a gorgeous man. He is also a fantastic writer. There is something about him that prevents Rachel from being able to control herself, in a good way, her Kirby persona just can’t seem to stay at bay around him. Confused by the mixed messages she receives from Joe, she isn’t sure what to think. Being new in town and trying to make his dreams come true, he finds himself getting dating advice from a least likely place.

“If he can’t handle being with you at your worst, then he sure as hell doesn’t deserve you at your best.”

Rachel and Joe are destined to be together. They have so much in common and their attraction for each other is electrifying. When all aspects of Rachel’s life come crashing down on her, she realizes that not only will she loose her dream job, but she will also lose the man she loves.

Samantha Anne created a funny and beautiful character with Rachel. Clumsy yet sexy, smart and determined and a bit guarded. When Rachel has the opportunity to let go of her inner sex goddess in Kirby it gives her a confidence she never knew she had.

Joe is a gift from the gods. Not only is he gorgeous but he is a writer, a gentlemen and old school. I loved seeing a softer side to man. It was a nice change of pace to see the man wanting to take things slow to savor each moment.

This was a fun, entertaining and easy read. It was romantic and sweet. A modern day romantic comedy. The sexual tension was fantastic. Well written story and a must read!

I loved it! I remember as a kid watching classic romantic comedies with my mom and this book was like taking a trip back there. It brought to mind, specifically, the great Doris Day/Rock Hudson romp “Pillow Talk.” It was just so much fun. I’ve already recommended this book to my mom but I warned her she’s not allowed to like it better than my book coming out next month. Sorry, Samantha.

I smiled from nearly beginning to end as Rachel just got herself deeper into love and deeper into trouble all the while alternating between following the bad advice and ignoring the good advice proffered by her best friend. There’s even a back-stabbing ambitious, but under-talented, superior at work and if you have ever worked in an office environment you’ll know this character is drawn to PERFECTION.

Ms. Anne’s hero, Joe, is maybe a little too-good to be true but who cares! He’s gorgeous, sexy, talented, funny, intelligent, a down-to-earth family friendly guy who believes in commitment before hanky-panky. It wasn’t until a day after I finished the book that I thought maybe Joe was a bit too Pollyanna but then I decided I was looking for a flaw because I wanted to jump his fictional bones and felt guilty for it.

Read Kirby and then come wait with me for Samantha Anne’s next book.

What a fun, suspenseful, and witty novel! KIRBY is fast-paced, with great characters, whip-smart dialogue, and a sizzling---yet sweet---romance. I enjoyed the author's lively take on the phone sex industry, which she wove into the story deftly (and in a non-smarmy way) to provide compelling conflict between the hero and heroine. That, and a subplot involving the publishing industry (with a wicked editor and a savvy publisher) kept me turning the pages until well past midnight. Fans of the film "Working Girl" will certainly enjoy KIRBY, as will all readers who like to start their day with a big cup of Joe. ;)

In Kirby by Samantha Anne, Rachel Sirianni dreams of becoming an editor in the publishing industry, but jobs in publishing are not easy to come by or easily acquired.

But Rachel has a secret, she has an alter ego named Kirby, a sex-line operator. While Rachel follows the bad advise and ignores the good advise from her best friend, she finds herself deeper in trouble and falling more in love with Joe.

Joe is a talented, smart and down-to-earth true gentleman with old-fashioned views. Read More..

Kirby starts with great atmosphere and buzz, and Ms Anne keeps the pace just so, right until the end. Not only is there a cute heroine and a hot hot HOT hero to back, there is a lovely story of life in the publishing business, and um, another career choice of Rachel's (due to having to make ends meet!!) but I won't spoil it and tell you all! There's just the right amount of conflict and loads of sexual tension, very neatly done by Ms Anne. All great fun, I had a huge smile on my face when reading it. Looking forward to the next Samantha Anne :).

4.5/5 This was a fun read that grabbed my attention from the first page. I really enjoyed Rachel's story, but there were just a few niggles that prevent me from giving it the full 5/5 rating. I don't want to post any spoilers but there are three huge coincidences in this book that I found a little far-fetched. But hey, it's fiction. I also never figured out what Joe did for a living. He seemed always able to run to Rachel's side, seemed to have no problem with money, but I have no idea where it came from. Also, he was a little too perfect. But then I like my heroes with more than a touch of angst and issues to deal with. However the book held my interest and kept me page-turning to see how Rachel's various issues would work themselves out. A fun, light read for the beach or a warm evening on the patio with a glass of wine.

“It all led to him, she thought in delighted surprise, to Joe— my Hottie McCoffeehouse.”

Yet another book that made me stay up to late reading it. This book was so good! The excitement this book gives you. I was hooked from the first page to last! It is so well written. A fast pace light read, that gave me a break from the heavier reads I’ve been reading lately. Well done Samantha Anne. I CANT WAIT for the sequel! You did me dirty with the teaser lol

Rachel Sirianni is a native to New York with dreams of becoming an editor for Publishing Company Equinox. While Rachel does not get the job she wanted, she does get a job with the company with the ability to move up. Therefore, she gets a second job to help pay the bills. Rachel was a realistic character. Her actions and behaviors were truly, what I would expect most to do in her situation. I can easily understand why she did not tell her boss everything about Joe from the start. It’s hard to tell good bosses from bad bosses in the beginning.

Joe aka AJ Pavon is a hot and sexy writer with a heart of gold. He wants a relationship not just a few dates with a women. I loved that he knew what he wanted in his life and career but at the same time, I did find it odd. Most guys while they do want a relationship are not as upfront as Joe was about it.

The chemistry between Joe and Rachel is blistering. I loved that fate seemed to step in and keep pushing these two together otherwise I think neither would have given each other a second chance. I also liked unlike many romances sex was not the core reason they stayed together and that they waited for the right time and did not hope into bed together.

I found this book to be well written. The main and secondary characters were realistic. Overall, this was a magnificent book. I hope that Rachael’s best friend Camille ends up with her own book. I would love to know how many men call a sex line for relationship advice?
