Thea dreams. Not of a better life, but of revenge on the clan that ruined her family. With ferocious battles between man, machines, and monsters ahead…who knows where her quest for vengeance will take her? Creator DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON (Space Mullet) and colorist MIKE SPICER present a bold new vision, where the beauty and imagination of Studio Ghibli meet the intensity of Mad Max, in this all-new Skybound Original.
Daniel Warren Johnson is a Chicago-based comic book writer, artist, and illustrator. He's worked on titles for most major publishers, including Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, and Image. His current series with Skybound/Image Comics is EXTREMITY, a sci-fi/fantasy title he is writing and drawing, and continues to update his webcomic Space-Mullet in his spare time.
An intense, brutal and emotional start! The art is also gorgeous. I like that the creator built off of the fear of losing his hand, his identity as an artist to create this story. Such a personal basis to build off of.
This was rlly good. I really like the character designs and world atmosphere. The themes explored were pretty good too. Could have added more nuance and depth but still relatively good given the length of the series and medium
I've been a fan of Daniel Warren Johnson's work for quite a while now with Space Mullet Volume 1: One Gamble at a Time, and was tremendously excited to hear about his new story with Extremity. The premise of family revenge is really interesting, and as usual his artwork is gorgeous, the creativity in world creation and detail astounding. That being said, I think it's a little hard to rate comics by singular issue, because it's so difficult to know where it's going to go and they're so short, and this is no exception, especially as its the first in the series. Rollo, Thea's brother, is so far the most compelling character to me, especially in his relationship with their father, but I do see strong seeds in the other characters as well, seeds that will likely (and should) take longer to tease out. I liked the clear story arc within this comic, especially a sort of mini-story to highlight the focus of the larger work (at least from what I know of it), and am definitely looking forward to more. The map at the end is gorgeous, and the note from Daniel about the difficulty and length of the process makes me even more intrigued to see how it works out. I've definitely subscribed to it at my local comic book store, and am looking forward to getting the next one!
This could be interesting, but it's not doing much yet. This focuses on Thea and her clan's war. I don't know much about their feelings or reasoning. While the sci-fi aspect definitely is helped by it having the visual aspect of a comic book, it felt like the writing and characterization took a backseat in favor of more body horror. I might give it another try later on, but I don't currently feel a drive to continue on or see what happens next.
This is dark and harsh and human. We've seen the feuding family trope many times before, but this is something new while being exactly that trope. Johnson shows both brutality and mercy and how they can co-exist while conflicting and the art matches the cold reality of this world. The pacing is also excellent. A great comic.
This was a pleasant and clearly carefully crafted start to a grander revenge story. It picks up fast, giving just enough info to follow along, yet shares glimpses into a seemingly rich world-building experience. Bravo 👏🏼
I also like the colouring, art style, and that map in the back is chef's kiss 🤌🏼
First Daniel Warren Johnson series and it did not let me down, one of the most beautiful and well written comic books I've ever read , highly recommend .
el comic sigue a una familia disfuncional de un futuro distópico, donde la protagonista está buscando su identidad entre la rabia heredada y realmente quien quiere ser en su nueva forma de vida.
If you like battles, space ships, war, and destruction this is a series for you. Gives the feel of Mad Max meets space warfare. This first issue really jumps things off and right into the story!
