No good deed goes unpunished.
Alexa learns that the hard way. After an emergency operation, the heroine suddenly starts having visions which she can’t explain. Helping that person gets her kidnapped and used. She either stays there or helps Jude or she gets to leave and everyone she loves will be killed.
I panicked at the beginning when I thought it was YA. But rest assured it goes more to the NA direction. I had to keep reminding myself at times when the heroine was being juvenile that she is only seventeen. But at times she came across as more mature. What others see as a gift is a curse. It brings her nothing but confusion, sadness and heartbreak.
I am really surprised in how great this book is. It’s a book where you don’t know where things are going. Where you have no idea, what is going to happen and it’s not annoying that you don’t know what is going on. Full of surprises and suspense I really did enjoy it.
This is just me but as it is YA I can’t give it a full five stars and I find the first person POV difficult.

I picked this up because of a few rave reviews from fellow bloggers, and the synopsis had a great hook. Plus, when I went to add it to my wish list on Amazon.com I discovered it was free. Bargain! I’ve read many books in this genre and had a lot of fun… but ‘The Gift’ was anything but for me. I think I’d rather have my teeth drilled, strapped down in a dentist chair.
The writing style felt juvenile. As well as the main character, Alexa, fell through a sequence of events and felt very passive. The line 'are you okay' was repeated with such repetition I wanted to turn it into a drinking game but was in fear I'd kill my liver.
Her acceptance of her gift happens very quickly, and the plot all of a sudden becomes very intricate - but this development does not feel organic, maybe because of the writing style, and maybe because of the poorly written protagonist.
The novel takes a turn and I thought it would get better, but Alexa is just not reacting logically or realistically. I feel like its some poorly written, badly acted movie.
To add insult to injury, Alexa says asshole way too much. I really feel like slapping my forehead repeatedly. She also says and thinks ‘ugh’ a lot too. This book is exasperating. Wasn’t this even edited to get rid of so many repeated words and phrases?
And then there is the antagonist, who is almost a characture of a bond villain.
Their relationship makes me want to vomit.
Ended on a cliff-hanger which had me intrigued, but will not continue with this series. There was nothing resolved with the plot by the end of ‘The Gift.’ The writing style did not work for me. The main characters behaviour annoyed the heck out of me, she was always the victim... A whole lot of questions were posed, the mythology suggested, but never explored, the characters weren’t able to resolve any of the problems set up during the novel and then the book just ended. It felt like I was in the middle of a sentence and someone hit the pause button.
The dialogue for all the characters wasn’t all that great. Even the sassiness of Alexa came off as cheesy instead of humorous – which is what it seemed the author wanted it to be.
With ‘The Butterfly Effect’ in the series title, I was expecting something to do with time travel – but we got none of that. I felt mislead.
I could have DNF’d this book quite easily – but then I wouldn’t be able to comment on plot – which went nowhere, character development: nada, and believability was ruined by heavily stereotyped characters and cheesy dialogue.
But it has a lot of potential. I’m shocked given the award the Author has won. But I can’t see myself ever reading any more of her material after this dog’s breakfast. This has got to be the lowest rating I’ve given for 2017.

Another book that ended abruptly - it is a trend that is very annoying to me! Otherwise, it wasn't too bad, though it seems as if Stockholm Syndrome is taking hold! Don't fall for a guy that kidnaps you and denies your freedom by threatening to kill your family if you leave - that is not romantic, its abuse.

Let me first say I just say I love this cover it is so catching just beautiful.

Margaret has done it again is there anything she can not write this is so different from what I have ever read before. I honestly did not know what to expect going into this. I knew it was going to be very different from the authors other books. Once I started I couldn’t put it down.
Alexa has a gift that people want her for and they will kill for it .. but they cannot steal or take it from her it is a gift and it is a part of her. I love the characters.... Jude I am not to sure about yet lol he is an arrogant asshole.. but that could change! lol
I really don’t want to spoil this book but if you love this authors work give this a try even if you think it will not be for you it is so worth it and you will not be disappointed.. it is so well written and flows perfect. The story will keep you hooked and turning pages trying to figure out what is going to happen. Oh yes and thank you Margaret for not ripping my heart out in this one. lol

This book was awful.
Jude is a horrible, violent, disgusting person who kidnaps a 17 year old girl and threatens to kill her family if she tries to leave and yet apparently he's attractive? Just because he's rich and powerful and good looking and doesn't physically hurt Lexi does not make the relationship at all healthy or acceptable. How about we don't sell these ideas to teenage girls? Or anyone for that matter.
Also, how many times can the characters have the same conversation in a book that is less than 200 pages long? I don't know because I lost count.
The only good thing I have to say about this book is that I got it for free so I didn't waste any money.

One thing I’ve come to expect when reading a Margaret McHeyzer book is that you will be pulled in from the beginning and won’t be able to stop till the very last page!! The Gift is no exception.
Lexi is 16 almost 17 when doubled over in pain. After being rushed to the hospital and undergoing surgery for appendicitis, things have changed with her. Change in a big-time way! It starts in the hospital…yet Lexi is afraid to tell anyone.
Jude is HOT!!! Jude is a BAD man. Jude always gets what he wants…if not you are taken care of… Lexi can help Jude in a big way so Jude does what he does best. He acquires Lexi and will use her to his advantage.
Although I must admit, this book really didn’t sound like something I would enjoy at all. Boy was I 100% wrong!!! I thoroughly enjoyed this quick paced, page turner!! Just goes to tell you, sometimes you must step outside of your comfort zone to enjoy a great book!!!
Can’t wait for book 2 to be released when all questions should be answered.

The Gift is the first book in the Butterfly Effect series. Actually, I don't know if it's going to be a series or a duet. Either way it's the first one, right? I am going to make this short since I can't really say much about the storyline.
At the age of sixteen, Alexa's life changes. She wakes up confused and has no idea what has happened to her but she feels different. Then, it happens. Her gift is presented to her. She doesn't know what to do with it. But soon she finds out that people would kill for it.
Yeah. Sorry. That's all you will get out of me about the story. It will make the story even better with the surprises though. I will say that the characters are well-developed. The writing is amazing. The storyline is fantastic. It's truly an addicting book. You will want the next book as soon as you see the last words. And Thank God Margaret isn't going to make us wait too long.
Overall...I was hooked in from the very first page. It's a fast read that you leave you wanting more.

This started off interestingly enough ... then totally went downhill. I had to force myself to finish and even with under 200 pages, it felt looong.
The premise: near death experience and now she can catch glimpses of the future by touching people. I liked that.
But once she was kidnapped by a 25-year old gangster who is going to keep her for her ability, oy! Utterly eye-rolling. The "relationship" between Jude and Lexi was so unreal. He has kidnapped her and says he'll kill her parents and best friend if she tries to leave. Trying to even imagine a 17-year old girl in this situation ... and it is NOT Lexi here in this book. Oh she says she's upset and cries her eyes out, but then mentions that Jude is "hot" even though his violence (he beats and tortures people, sometimes right in front of her, other times glimpsed in visions) turns her off ... that and the whole being kidnapped and loved ones threatened thing. That doesn't stop her from chatting casually with him at breakfast, pouting, teasing, flirting with him while changing into a new bra/panties as he watches and telling him to pick her up tampons and pads for her upcoming period. Just blah!
Glad I got it for free at least (Kindle special). Will NOT be continuing on to the next books in the series.

Interesting premise, but goes sideways fast
The narrating style is not my preference, but the concept appealed to me. We spend a lot of time setting up the main character, but you don't know much about her by the end of the book. I only finished this book, because I kept hoping it would turn back. It did not.

Once Lexi is held captive, I started skimming. It became too Stockholm Syndrome, until she remembered she should be angry. I feel no connection to the main character. I wish the plot would have developed differently.

This book is UNFINISHED. This is not a book but an episode. There is no ending. While the story line moves along quite reasonably in spite of a rather juvenile style, the fact that it simply stops and says - to be continued - like any soap opera, is not acceptable.
A book, Ms Mcheyzer, has a beginning, a middle and ... an end. This end can contain loose ends teasing the reader to seek out a sequel but to simply leave the end hanging is unacceptable.
I therefore consider that this book is UNFINISHED and thus unreadable.

Imagine if your body begins to go through changes, changes no one wouldn't believe. Suddenly, you're captured as your changes manifest into your "gift" and your captor wants your gift. Would you submit or would you fight for your very life. This is my first time reading McHeyzer (I know, I know, where have I been) and I'm pretty invested in this series. Superb suspense with intriguing characters along with an original plot. Highly recommend!

Thoroughly intriguing reading
I’m enthralled with this story. Margaret McHeyzer has created an interesting premise and her characters are well developed and intriguing.
Alexis and Jude certainly have an interesting relationship, or you might even say a non relationship.
What strikes me the most is Lexis dedication to her family and her best friend, Dallas. For a seventeen year old girl, she’s definitely one old soul but her sassiness is refreshing, if not annoying to Jude.
Loved this story, even though it’s YA and not my normally preferred genre and now 8m looking forward to diving straight into The Curse.

Imagine waking up all of a sudden at the hospital and feeling strange. The nurse touches you to check your vitals and you are transported into a vision of what her future will be. FREAK OUT!
Alexa is a normal seventeen-year-old and these visions are making her very stressed. She avoids touching anyone, except her parents to avoid launching these visions. By accident, she touches a stranger at the mall and sees that he is about to be assassinated that evening. She is driven to warn him. It is a lot for her to carry the burden of a murder she could have prevented and didn't. The rest of the story is a rollercoaster ride thriller of danger and survival. Everyone wants her gift, but not necessarily for good.
Be forewarned this book ends in a cliffhanger. Never fear, The Curse (The Butterfly Effect#2) is releasing on August 20th and you do not have long to find out what happens next. THRILLING!

Alexa Murphy was a normal 17 year old girl until her appendix burst and she nearly died. When she comes too in hospital she discovers she has been left with an extra ability, the ability to touch people and see their futures. Lexi is a kind-hearted young woman and she makes a decision that ends up putting her face to face with Jude Caley. Jude knows what she can do and takes her captive. Ostensibly he claims it is to keep her safe, but that doesn’t stop him from using her as a human lie detector.
“Then I’m not free. I’m not free to leave, I’m not free to live my life.”
“You’ll live your life here. With me.”
“I hate you.”
“I know.”
The relationship between Lexi and Jude is a highly complex one. From the start of The Gift, Jude comes across as an uncaring. I initially hated Jude and the way he acted with Lexi. I found, however, at some point, and I can’t really say when. I found myself feeling pity and sympathy for him. It’s apparent he is hiding something from Lexi, and I really hope that is solved in the sequel The Curse. I enjoyed The Gift; it was a good start to the series which is why I didn’t really take it to heart when I found the book hard going in the first 15%. I wasn’t completely hooked until I was at the halfway mark.
I don’t often read YA/NA books. I find them very hard to get into and even harder to relate to, but this was not the case when it came to The Gift. I know I stated that this wasn’t an easy one at the beginning, but this has nothing to do with it being a YA/NA. It has more to do with the character and story build up being done in a way that I found staggered at times and once or twice was very slow or mundane. The Gift is the start of a series that could go anywhere. There were so many questions left unanswered. I really am highly intrigued in where the author will take this plot. I just wish this book hadn’t ended on a cliff hanger.

Went into this story expecting one thing but pleasantly surprised with so much more. She's able to take two aspects of a story I love that are nothing a like and bind them in nonstop page turning piece.
The story starts off with the heroine Alexa a.k.a Lexi in the hospital. After surgery she wakes to find she has gained a supernatural ability. Confused and scared of what people will think if she keeps it herself. After failing to help out someone she decides to help a man named Jude out despite him thinking she might be crazy. Unknown to her Jude is a very powerful and dangerous man.
To me the concept of her powers was an interesting pull but when the concept of putting her into this dangerous world because of a man's need to control and use this gift hooked me in. The complexity and balance of the story plus the characters intrigued and elated me. I'm so far hooked in I'm helpless just waiting to see what happens next
First time going reading from Margaret McHeyzer and I got more then I expected. She brings a plethora of elements to this story and balances them out perfectly.

This book sucked me right in and I could barely put it down to sleep! The plot twists are amazing and the character development in both Lexi and Jude were really well done.
I highly recommend this even though the cliffhanger made my jaw drop! What a way to end the book!

This book blew me away. I read it in one sitting, I couldn´t put it down.

I am left a bit speechless on this one. More like 4.25 stars because of the slow start. However, once it got going I could not, did not want to put this down. Then I was left begging Margaret McHeyzer for more immediately!! Can't wait to get my hands on The Curse!!

OMG!! So intense
This story had me hooked from the beginning! It's full of twists and turns and I don't know whether to hate Jude or develop a major crush on him!

What a page turner. Started out a little slow but then I sailed through it. Some laugh out loud really funny parts. Lexi is a pistol. I like her fire. I too, can't wait to read The Curse. So I preordered today.
I recommend this book.

Nice concept, Short on execution
Admittedly, this book was a frustrating read for me. Not necessarily because of the premise. The premise is that a teenage girl, named Alexa awakens in a hospital to find she has developed the ability to see the future of anybody she touches after almost losing her life due to acute appendicitis and after using her abilities to save a guy named Jude, she ends up being kidnapped by him so that he can use her abilities to help further his criminal empire. Now while the premise of someone developing psychic abilities after a major physical disability is not a new one, I did not mind the concept. Nor do I mind the inevitable romance between the two characters…for the most part. Rather the execution of the premise left a lot to be desired. From the pacing to the plotting, to the characters; I started to feel drained the more I read this story. Even more frustrating is that there are seeds of a decent, entertaining story present. It was just not able to reach its full potential.
Now this is a novella size story. Meaning it is a story around 180 pages. A story of this size should not feel as if it is padded. Yet this story does. The author introduces several moments at the beginning of the story that are either extraneous to the plot or a kind of a sequel hook to the next book in the series. Due to this, the story feels weaker. Slower. Jude himself does not appear until thirty percent or so into the story. By that point, we have had several points that could have been its own story. Or contributed to Jude and Alexa’s characterization. Like for example, Alexa’s mom is a judge working on a case that necessitated Alexa having a bodyguard. It feels like a missed opportunity for the case not to be related to Jude and his criminal empire. Perhaps even have it where Jude was keeping tabs on Alexa before her realizing her abilities. There were several characters, including the apparent fake doctor and nurse, that could have been easily revealed to be working for Jude. As is, they feel wasted elements and probably should have been removed.
Then there is the plot. As aforementioned, I do not mind the concept. Yet the execution is wanting. While the banter between Jude and Alexa is done well at times, ultimately the relationship feels very manipulative and it is debatable as to whether this was intended by the author. Debatable in the sense that there are moments where the story tries to establish Jude as a sociopath, albeit with some ounce of good in him. Or moments where Alexa is truly worried about her family and being kidnapped by Jude. Only for the story to then try to have a humorous moment that somewhat dampens the whole thing. A good example of this is that there was a scene early in the story where Jude has a guard killed due to the guard grabbing Alexa and hurting her. Alexa is completely in shock by Jude’s actions and she worries that she is in danger. It is depicted as a very serious scene that is supposed to establish the character of Jude. Some page later, Alexa basically does a striptease in front of Jude. Now ignoring that Alexa is only seventeen (and just became seventeen in the story) and Jude is twenty-five, this scene is depicted as humorous. Jude is completely flustered by Alexa’s actions. It is depicted as a ‘win’ for Alexa because she gets the upper hand on Jude in her mind. This dichotomy completely deflates the tension of the story. The characters do not feel like people. They feel more like props in a set piece being moved by the story to act in ways that help the story to progress, rather than people creating their own story.
In conclusion, I just cannot recommend this story. The characters need to be fleshed out more. The plot needs more focusing and trimming. The tone needs more work to make the concept work.

Ok, so maybe the next book in the series clears up the things that don't make sense, but I cannot continue. This books just made me mad.
Lexi has emergency surgery after her appendix bursts. When she wakes up, whenever she comes into contact with someone else's skin, she sees a vision of that person later in the day. First she sees a vision of her nurse being gunned down. But weirdly, nothing happens when her parents touch her; that hasn't been explained yet. Then some suspicious people claiming to be a nurse and doctor are in her hospital room and they seem to know what's going on. Days later, she's at the mall when her friend pushes her into the path of a very attractive man. Lexi gets a vision of him meeting some business associate, but it's an ambush of men with guns. Feeling that she can't let anot her person die, Lexi warns him. He glares and asks who sent her.
Days later, she's in a car accident and kidnapped.
Ok. This is when the book fell apart. The attractive guy from the mall, Jude, is a very dangerous man. He's kidnapped her because he realizes she has a gift and is very valuable to him. She begs to leave. He tells her she can leave any time she wants. But the moment her foot leaves his property, he'll make a phone call and her mom, her dad, and her best friend will all be killed. They go through this conversation MANY times. So here's my problem. I don't care how sassy and spunky of a seventeen year old you are. Dealing with the psychological torment Jude puts Lexi under should do more than cause her to sob a couple of times. Like seriously, the stuff this guy does is beyond terrible. And then there's Jude. Maybe the writer was trying to make him come off as complex, but instead he just doesn't make sense. He flips between two extremes too much. He's a stone cold killer and he's terrible. And then he's all sweet towards Lexi, but is holding her captive. It almost comes across like he's falling in love with her. And then Lexi goes from "You're a monster! I hate you!" to "the way he said that was sexy". Are you seriously trying to go for Stockholm syndrome?!?! Just don't.
Anyway, since I've told so much of the story, I may as well continue.
While Jude is away on business, Lexi is taken by people pretending to be cops. They a make sure not to touch her, so they know about her "gift." And then they are in a car accident, and as she blacks out, Lexi feels herself being taken from the van. The end

WOW! Well written book with an intriguing storyline that will grab you from the first page right to the cliffhanger end! Yep, it's a cliffie! But that's ok because that just means that there more to read, more intrigue, more mystery and excitement and more of Mr. Hotness that is one Jude Caley.
Lexie is just sixteen years old when she after receiving emergency surgery, is given the "gift". When she touches someone, or someone touches her she can see the future, their future and that scares the hell out of her. She's only sixteen, how does she process this, who can she tell what's going on without them thinking she's needs a padded room. After going home from the hospital everything goes back to normal and the visions stop, until she goes back to school and is hugged by her best friend. She is floored and panicked. What's wrong with her and why is this happening to her. She agrees to go with her best friend to the mall (which is the vision she saw when she hugged her), and in fact, her vision comes true, but it goes a bit further when her friends puprosely trips her into the path of the "really cute" guy in a suit from her vision. When he touches her, the vision she sees is horrid and she runs, but realizes by her not warning him would only lead to another person losing their life by her keeping quiet so she rushes back to him and tells him about her vision. From that point on her life is never the same, as a matter of fact, her life isn't her's again.
An amazing read that will keep you on your toes and turing page after page to see where the story leads. Jude is a bad man, but he is also good to Lexie and is trying to protect her. He seems to know what has happened to her and although he wants to use her ability, he also want's to keep her safe. But can he? Something strange is going on and there is something shadey going on. But you will have to wait to find out what! I promise you will not be disappointed in this book and I highly recommend it!

Okay, let me first say that I really loved this book! It is the start of what I am sure is going to be an amazing series!
I went into this one blind, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Oh, and this is also my first time reading anything written by this author. With that said, I am glad to say that this story was outstanding.
Alexa is a seventeen year old girl who was rushed into surgery with appendicitis. When she awakes post surgery, it doesn't take her long to figure out that something is different. She seems to have developed a gift. Whenever she touches someone or they touch her, she receives visions. For fear of not being believed and maybe looked at as crazy, she doesn't reveal her gift to anyone. That all changes when she has a run in with a young man in the mall. When she touches this man, she receives a vision of him being killed. Even though she knows this stranger will think she is nuts, she tells him and rushes away.
A few days later, the car she is riding in is hit several times from behind. She ends up in a swanky house that belongs to the man from the mall. His name is Jude, and he is a well known criminal. By sheer luck, he has figured out her special gift, and he wants to use it to his advantage. He basically kidnaps her and threatens to kill all those she loves unless she helps him.
I really loved Alexa! Even though she was in a bad situation, she is sharp and sassy. And Jude? The jury is still out on that one. Margaret McHeyzer is a very skilled writer. Her writing is flawless which allows the story to flow effortlessly. I will warn you. Don't start reading this at night because this is one of those books you just can't put down. If you are willing to step out of your comfort zone, this is the book for you! I can't wait for The Curse which is the second book in this series.

Started off pretty good, but I'm having the same trouble I always have when someone suggests a book about a girl falling in love with her captor: How can you be attracted to someone who repeatedly threatens you or your family? Not buying it. Not romantic at all. He scares her and makes her cry after ruining her life. Not swoon-worthy, sorry. I get him falling for her. I don't get her falling for him.
I did enjoy the stuff about her gift, though. I'll read the sequel, but I'm having trouble with the love story. At least it's a quick read.

How about no.
Please don’t perpetuate the total jerk as a love interest trope. Jude is a bad person. Gross. Also, it’s hard to read a character who is constantly seesawing between content/happy and extremely emotional/angry/hateful all the time. I’m all for the gifting, all against everything else.
Side note: there were quite a few dangling modifiers—enough for me to notice and be annoyed by. (Had to pacify the grammar nerd there, sorry!) Otherwise it was a grammatically clean book and easy to read.

I love the idea behind this book- being able to see into the future of another individual with a simple touch. However, I feel that there was a lot more that could have been done with it. It was extremely repetitive and focused too heavily on the unusual relationship between Lizzy and Jude which just felt a bit wrong. Not in the sense that you feel like a naughty school girl whilst reading it but in the sense it made you want to throw up a little.
