FROM AUTHOR'S WEBSITE: I'm a native of central Maine, and grew up on a small farm with a wonderful mom and dad, three sisters and a brother. Most of my books take place in small towns, many of them in Maine.

My husband, Jim, and I moved to his birth state, Oregon, for a while after we were married, but decided to move back to Maine and be near my family. It allowed our six children to grow up feeling close to their cousins and grandparents, and some of Jim's family have even moved to Maine!

Our children are all home-schooled. When Jim retired from his vocation as an editor at a daily newspaper, we moved from Maine to Kentucky.

I've always loved reading, history, and horses. These things come together in several of my historical books.
Another longtime hobby of mine is genealogy, which has led me down many fascinating paths. I'm proud to be a DAR member! Some of Jim's and my quirkier ancestors have inspired fictional characters.

For many years I worked for the Central Maine Morning Sentinel as a freelancer. This experience was a great help in developing fictional characters and writing realistic scenes. I also published nonfiction articles in several magazines and had several short stories appear in Woman's World, Grit, and Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine.

On the worst day of his life, Detective Harvey Larson's partner was murdered in a raid and his wife left him. Ten years later, he receives a call to investigate a missing computer programmer and meets a beautiful young programmer, Jennifer Wainthrop. A few weeks later as the case has gone cold, he finds out that his ex-wife has committed suicide after her new husband left her. Harvey's life had been on hold as he hoped that they could make up. His ex's death frees him in a sense. He asks Jennifer out despite her being sixteen years younger. Then the cold case heats up as the missing computer programmer's car is found in a lake.

After Nick disappeared, Jennifer's bosses ask her and two other programmers to work on a highly secret program for a foreign investor. However, each programmer can see only his/her part of the program. A Middle Eastern man visits the company several times.

As Jennifer and Harvey's romance heats up, so do their questions about God and Jennifer's misgivings about the secret program. When someone blows up Harvey's car, the big questions are who and why. Is the attack because of a current case or does someone from his past want him dead?

I've read at least one of the later books in the series and enjoyed it. The romance is unusual here because of the age gap and the wounds that both Jennifer and Harvey carry. Davis keeps the suspense high and the characters developing. She does a good job making their search for God realistic. It's a good read for Christian suspense lovers.

Ten years ago, Harvey Larson experienced the worst night of his life. His partner, Chris, was killed in a firefight and he returned home to find his wife had left him taking nearly all their furniture, all their décor – everything that made their apartment HOME - with her. He had no warning and has felt stuck ever since. Ten years later, he STILL has no furniture, STILL wears his wedding band (even though the divorce has been final for 8 of those years) and STILL sleeps on the floor because he can’t stand to sleep in the bed she left behind. To say that change is hard for Harvey is probably an understatement.
Harvey works as a detective in Portland, Maine assigned to The Priority Unit. When he and his partner, Eddie Thibodeau, catch a missing person case, he has no idea of the changes coming his way. The last person to see Nick Durham before he disappeared was his co-worker at Coastal Technology, Jennifer Wainthrop. Harvey’s connection with Jennifer is immediate and, for him anyway, intense. As he and Eddie investigate, he can’t forget the young beauty but when the case goes cold, he stays away. His personal ethics prohibit him from getting involved with someone he met on a case and he still feels married. When there is finally a break in the case, what will it take for Harvey to step out of his past toward the future he wants?
Jennifer Wainthrop has been a programmer at Coastal Technology for just under 3 years, specializing in security measures for the programs they create. When she and two other programmers are put on a “special project” that requires each of them to work on a separate piece of one program without ever seeing the other two pieces, her suspicions are aroused. As she gets to know Harvey through the investigation, she begins to trust his integrity. Can they piece together all of the questions they have to solve the mystery of both her co-worker’s disappearance and what the secret project can do?
As bombs blow up Harvey’s vehicle and gunshots are aimed their way, Harvey and Jennifer are pulled together. As they pursue a killer, they also pursue relationships with a God that neither grew up knowing. Will faith be the rock each of them needs when survival is in question?
You know that book where you want to yell at the hero or heroine, “NO!! Don’t step out that door!” or “Don’t get in that car!” Well, THIS is that book and because of that suspense, I stayed up WAY too late to finish the story. I knew I wouldn’t sleep if I didn’t find out how it ended. For me, that is the mark of a great suspense novel and The Priority Unit ticked every suspense box. Romance readers will also enjoy watching the love grow between Harvey and Jennifer. It was quite a read and, after reading some of Susan Page Davis’ historicals, not exactly what I expected. I definitely recommend this!

"It had almost become a matter of pride that he never let his work intrude in his personal life."

But that was before Detective Harvey Larson interviewed Jennifer Wainthrop. As one of the computer software designers at Coastal Technology, Jennifer knew the man that been declared missing, and Harvey needed to gather any pertinent information that she could give him. He hardly expected one quiet conversation to make such a lasting impression.

Jennifer Wainthrop wonders whether or not the new software project that she has been assigned to is capable of infiltrating high level security. The partners have certainly been secretive about a lot of the details, especially after one of the program's premier designer's disappears. "Why did (Detective) Larson inspire calm and hope in her, when Owen and Channing's (firm partners) speeches to employees only fuel speculation and dread . . .. ?"

As Harvey and Jennifer brave the idea of a personal connection, it becomes apparent that the missing persons case is larger and broader than originally implied; and while their sincere investigation of faith and a future is endearing, a cloud of doom precariously hovers overhead.

This is not only an interesting crime novel, but the characters' intentional determination to discover whether or not God is "real", and how their acceptance or denial of that fact might influence the rest of their lives, is beautifully displayed through-out this story.

In reading Susan's book, I realized how lucky, or maybe I should say blessed, I am that I grew up in the South where going to Sunday school and church was just what we did. It is almost beyond my understanding that it's not that way everywhere. But neither Harvey nor Jennifer learned anything about Jesus when they were young. It was fun watching them learn about things I almost take for granted.

What I liked best about it was the relationship between Detective Harvey Larson and Jennifer Wainthrop. It really resonated with me. He's sixteen years older than she is and worried that he might be too old. He is such an honorable man who was faithful to a wife that deserted him, yet he had no compunction about hacking into the company where she worked to check her out. Of course, it caused quite a bit of trouble for everyone. But I don't want to give away too much.

"Priority Unit," book 1 of the Maine Justice series was a delight. A seasoned police detective and a young computer software designer set about to solve the mystery of the death of her co-worker, and in the meantime come to find not only love, but the love of God. For anyone who loves police procedurals and suspense, this is a great read!

Very much an inspirational Christian story with mystery included. Detective Harvey Larson is a complicated man who is an honest, caring person yet without any faith or understanding of God. The changes in his outlook on life are almost too quickly changed. But there are circumstances in his life that influence his growth in faith and, after all, it is a fictional story. Clean read.

I did enjoy this book. I especially liked the fact that to protagonists realized they needed to be saved and establish their own relationship with God separate from their romantic relationship with each other. It was a clearly Christian book. it seemed to drag in places, however, and didn't deviate much from a predictable romance/mystery plot. I appreciate the conservative nature of the book, but the protagonists, who began the book as unbelievers, seem to act and think almost like believers. This is listed as "inspirational romantic suspense" but to me it would be better classified as a romantic mystery as it is more about the puzzle of what was happening than fast-paced, danger-laced suspense.

Harvey Larson is a Detective with a small town in Maine. Jennifer Wainthrop is a computer tech at a company that produces computer programs for a variety of companies. They cross paths when one of the computer techs Jennifer works with disappears and a missing person report is filed. Little did Harvey and Jennifer know that this would push them into a relationship that neither expected when both their faith beliefs and personalities were so different.

Fast paced, filled with numerous twists and turns, along with suspense and romance, this was another top notch read from Susan Page Davis. I look forward to reading the rest of this series.

Priority Unit is easily one of the best fiction books I’ve ever read. From the very first chapter, it pulled me into a world of crime-solving, unexpected connections, and genuine spiritual searching. If you enjoy detective mysteries with depth, heart, and purpose, this book absolutely delivers.

At its core, the story follows a dedicated team of crime-fighting detectives—exactly the kind of investigative suspense I love. The mystery is engaging without ever feeling rushed, and each revelation feels earned. But what truly elevates this book is how much it gives you beyond the casework.

There’s also just the right touch of romance woven into the story. One detective, long stuck in his past and resistant to change, meets someone who quietly captures his attention—and maybe holds the key to him stepping into a new chapter of life. Watching him wrestle with whether to remain anchored in what has always been familiar or to take a chance on something new adds a beautiful emotional layer.

But perhaps my favorite part of the book is the spiritual journey of the protagonists. They begin with a simple intellectual curiosity about God, yet their seeking becomes sincere and transformative. As a reader, you feel like you’re sitting front-row learning alongside them—exploring questions of purpose, truth, and what it means to genuinely pursue God.

This story is about so much more than solving a crime. It’s about:

Chance encounters that turn into life-changing moments

Courage to pursue new opportunities

Friendships and partnerships shaped by trust and mutual growth

Learning to depend on others instead of carrying everything alone

Right versus wrong, and the weight of the choices we make

Seeing God at work through people He brings across our path

Priority Unit blends mystery, character development, romance, and spiritual discovery so seamlessly that I didn’t want it to end. It’s a book that entertains, inspires, and leaves you thinking long after the final page.

Highly, highly recommended.

Could be great

I enjoyed the premise of the book but was very disappointed the author used it to proselytize against the Catholic faith using arguments that clearly demonstrate her lack of actual knowledge of the Catholic faith. She needs to investigate for herself. May God bless her and help her to do that. I will not be reading anymore of her books.

Hmm . . . I thought I "heard" about this series because my friend Melissa had read it and posted it on GoodReads--but Goodreads says none of my friends have read it . . .

The Priority Unit is a unit of the Portland Police Department that gets cases that need immediate attention. Harvey Larsen is a detective in the Priority Unit. The book starts with a missing computer programmer. Jennifer Wainthrop is one of the missing man's coworkers.

At first, I wasn't sure I'd like the book. That may have been because with this being book 1 in the series, some background information needed to be put out there. I liked that the author didn't hint around at Harvey's past overly long, but just got the information about Carrie out there fairly quickly.

I also liked that both Harvey and Jennifer began seeking the answer to their question(s) about God. They both are correct that the belief needs to come from yourself and not because you want to believe because the person you love believes. In one sense, a Christian is always a seeker--there are always things we don't understand--some we don't understand yet and some we won't understand until God reveals them at a time of his choosing--and we should keep seeking new information and new understanding about the Bible.

There's a set up for other characters to be seekers too: Eddie and Mike. Perhaps Sarah eventually. I liked the Sarah character, but I also wondered if Eddie might eventually end up with Beth. I like both women, but I'd hate to see Sarah get hurt because Eddie chose Beth over her. Then again, maybe Beth will end up with Jennifer's brother if he ends up in Portland.

The book did get better for me as it went on and I do plan to read others in the series.

Thanks Susan Page Davis for my copy to review.

This is an interesting suspense story.  The book starts with Harvey having the worst night of his life. His partner is killed and his wife leaves him. The book then fast forwards 10 years to when he is investigating the disappearance of a software designer and this is where he meets Jennifer Wainthrop. Not long after he learns is ex wife has died and while at the funeral he spends time with her grandmother who challenges him. It is here he starts to wonder does God exist.  At the same time Jennifer has questions of her own and they both decide to do research together. In the meantime there is still a missing man and there is a car bombing.

I enjoyed waiting to find out what would happen next. The suspense wasn't too heavy which I like but enough to keep you on your the edge of your seat. I wanted to know who the bomber was and why, and why did the designer disappear. I also have to mention Eddie, he is a scene stealer at times and a fun character. I was kept guessing which is a good sign of a good book. I am eagerly awaiting book two.

If you like Police suspense I am sure you will enjoy this book

I found myself engrossed in the book because of the computer skills of the two leading characters. Jennifer is a software designer working for a company that develops very sophisticated systems for their clients. When a fellow designer goes missing, the police bring in their Priority Unit to try to determine what has happened to him. Harvey, the lead investigator who has better than average computer skills for a cop, becomes quite frustrated when they cannot find a single clue that will lead them to the missing designer. But the best part of the book occurs when Jennifer and Harvey decide to delve into the question of whether or not God really exists. The story takes on a whole new dimension as they talk together, attend church, start reading the Bible, and dig deep to see what they can learn. Jennifer has a certain shyness and insecurity so that she wants to know which way Harvey is leaning in their search but he tells her that she has to decide on her own. He does not want her decision to be based on his beliefs but to be totally hers. If you struggle with faith matters, this is a story that carries a powerful message wrapped in suspense, mystery, and romance.

Harvey lost his partner and his wife all in one night. Ten years goes by and it seems that life still went on and he needs to figure out what his life is all while finding out what happened to a missing man.
Jennifer is working on a computer case and something just doesn't seem right. But when her coworker goes missing her focus becomes helping the cops any way she can. But it seems someone has it out for her. Can Harvey keep Jennifer safe and find out who's involved with the missing coworker and who has it out for him?
This book starts off kind of slow and has a lot of details. However it has a few twist and turns along the way. I thought this was a suspense book, however there is a little suspense and a lot of romance. The storyline does have some mystery to it and it keeps you intrigued. At the end I wanted to read so much more and I can't wait to find out what happens with Eddie. I really enjoyed the friendships through this book it made for a super fun read even more.

Interesting. The story pulled me in. These were two people who lived intentionally. Detective Harry Lawson had made up his mind he wouldn't become involved romantically after his marriage ended in divorce. However, when he visits a computer company to investigate the disappearance of one of its programmers, he meets Jennifer Wainthrop who intrigues. She's got beauty and brains, and something else...class.

As the story unfolds, Harry and Jennifer begin to investigate the man's disappearance together. And they also begin to investigate with the same intensity whether the Bible is true. This was one of the most intriguing parts of the story to me. The author made me believe these two had grown up with no religious education. How they went about investigating the validity of the Bible was authentic.

The body of the missing man is found and it's sad for his wife and children, another part of the novel I felt was authentic. Of course the case is solved and the guilty punished.

I've had this book for quite awhile and it just kept getting pushed down the line until I forgot about it. I received an e-mail about the 7th book in the series and decided I needed to read it, and I am so glad that I did!

Harvey is a 41 year old detective. His wife left him 10 years ago but Harvey kept his ring on, hoping she would change her mind, even though their divorce was final. Then he finds that she remarried and has committed suicide. He was sad, but it also set him free.

Jennifer works for a computer company, she's 25 years old. When someone in her company goes missing Jennifer meets Harvey and there is an instant connection between the two of them, but both are a bit gun-shy.

Danger follows both of them and it puts them together more and more, and they decide to give a relationship between themselves a try - despite people trying to blow them up!

A good clean read.

This book launches us into a specialized police investigative unit. Book 1 introduces us to Harvey, Mike, Eddie, Jennifer, Beth, Jane and a few others. The Priority Unit is brought in on a missing persons case with no leads and after 8 weeks it needs to be left alone for other cases. After a car bombing, Mike, Eddie and Harvey try to figure out who’s mad enough to try and take someone out that way. What follows is the reheating of a couple cases, including the missing person case, when that body is found, and help from Jennifer. This book also starts the characters on a faith journey beginning with the question of it God is real and how to know. My first foray into Susan’s crime books and I’m impressed. Will be looking forward to reading the rest of this series. Fast moving book with plot twists nicely tied up by the end.

Good mystery romance with a balance of action and romance. There was not a terrible cliché about the cop protecting the woman; she stood up for herself. However, I did find it a little outlandish that he was single for so long.

The Christian aspects of this novels is like teaching a child about God/Jesus for the first time; they are both unbelievers. Very basic. The Catholic guy's reaction to it all peeved me a little though. Do people really feel that way?

The author really needs a better editor and I found it strange that she threw some unusual vocabulary on occasion when the rest of her writing was fairly basic. There were instances where I had to read a sentence twice because of the errors.

I look forward to the next book. I loved the characters especially Eddie.

Got tricked into reading a God propaganda pamphlet

The story is hokey at best. Then God gets thrown in. It is the opposite of fifty shades, but similar in one way. In fifty, the story stops for no good reason and breaks into a random sex scene. Flip a bunch of pages, ignore the boring sex, and continue with the story. The same holds true here, just substitute sex with God. Which clearly this author has done in her own life , as only a sex starved bible beater could craft such a boring and unrealistic couple. And..the thinly veiled jabs at Catholicism is weak. So why a full 2 stars? The author has created a character in Jenny that just makes me wanna grab her by that long blond braid and pound the God right out of her.

I was a nervous wreck reading this book. It starts with an employee at a software company going missing, which looked like foul play. His co-worker, Jennifer, picked up his projects, which were very secretive. The whole upper management team at the software company seemed very suspicious. Every time someone knocked on Jennifer's door, or a car drove into the driveway, I worried it might be someone coming to kill her, too. In the meantime, Jennifer meets police detective Harvey, they start seeing each other, and work together to determine if there is indeed a God. I enjoyed the book very much.

I loved this story. It has romance, mystery, suspense, drama, and a really nice dose of faith involved. I thought Davis did an excellent job of portraying the process of coming to faith in Christ. I found it very believable. I'm looking forward to reading the next book!

I feel that this book would be suitable for a teenager if he/she was comfortable with police-type activity. I wouldn't call it violence, but there are action scenes. The romantic episodes are perfectly acceptable, in my humble opinion, and portray strong moral character.

This is a great adult Christian Romantic Suspense. I'd recommend it to anyone, even a non-Christian, as the Christian message is easy to understand without being overly "preachy" (would be good to suggest to a friend who might be seeking answers about Christianity). I really liked most of the characters in this book (all the "good guys" anyway). They make nice new literary friends. I am looking forward to reading more books in this series; life for the members of The Priority Unit seems very interesting and at times almost too exciting.

Well-plotted, with a sweet romance and an interesting arc as Harvey and Jennifer made a cautious approach to faith. For me, it felt more "narrated" than "shown," which kept me at a distance. And I'd been looking forward to a vicarious trip to Maine, but other than mention of place names and the occasional highway route, there wasn't much to help an outsider like me "see" the landscape. There were a couple of lighthouse visits, but I didn't really "see" even those. Still this looks like a nice, easy-read mystery series. 3.5 stars for book 1.

Jennifer & Harvey

Harvey is a police detective and Jennifer is a program designer for a technology firm. They meet when Jennifer's co-worker, Nick goes missing and Harvey is assigned to the case. There are plot twists and danger on every side, as Harvey's car is blown to smithereens, he is shot & Jennifer is kidnapped. Neither of them has a religious background but they decide to try to find out if God is real. Their journeys to faith are sweet and convincing. Great start to the series.

A mysterious computer program being designed under a cloak of mystery. Multiple programmers each with one key component and no access to the rest of the program! I was drawn right into the middle of this mystery when the main programmer disappears without a trace. If you like lots of action, a mystery with interesting twists and turns, you will enjoy helping Harvey figure out this deadly mystery! I was gifted a copy by the author and my review is voluntary..

This is an extremely good book. The suspense begins with the prologue and slowly builds to a grand finish. The hero and heroine are both very likeable characters and as they begin their search for God, the steps are believable. The clues are given on a regular basis and I loved how the police worked at solving the crime. Highly recommend. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

When he and the Priority Unit investigate the disappearance of software designer Nick Dunham, he meets a young woman who will change his life. Jennifer Wainthrop was the last person to admit seeing Dunham alive. Harvey and his partner, Eddie Thibodeau, stay a step ahead of a bomber and put together the clues that tell the truth: Dunham’s kidnapping and the bombings are one case, and Jennifer is caught in the middle.

Eh. I enjoyed it, but putting in the Catholic kid who doesn't know his faith and then coming up with pat little explanations why Church is wrong and making him look even more inept was just not nice to him or the Church. Also I had a hard time believing an honest cop sneaks thru firewalls when investigating people. That seems pretty illegal to me. I'm going to pretend book 2 shows him learning deeper truths.
