Review of THE BLOOD LIVES
{IN THE BLOOD BOOK 1}

By Lee Isserow

This initial installment of the paranormal/sci fi series IN THE BLOOD is an exciting, fast-paced, deeply emotional novella with an intriguing scientific premise. There really do exist monsters, “haemogoblins” which consist of, quite literally, blood: sentient, active, almost uncontrollable blood entities. Certain individuals carry these, and when threatened or in danger, the blood monsters are aroused and injure, even kill, the threats. Of course, secretive governmental agencies are formed to study, analyse, and combat the entities. Carriers, when possible, are trained. One such is Ben, whose mother was killed by a “monster” when he was very small.

I started this and aside from going to bed last night I couldn't put it down. I had to know what was going to happen to Ben next and how he was going to accept what was happening to him. Ben when he was quite young (5yrs) witnessed his mother being killed by a legitimate monster. However, no one believed him and he eventually stopped believing himself and accepted that it was the man in jail who had killed her.

Now I'm not going to go too far into what happened in the beginning of the book regarding Ben and his mother's supposed murderer since I don't want to give anything major away...I mean no one likes spoilers. However, as a result, it does lead Ben into being recruited by a government agency whose mission is to combat the monsters responsible for his mother's death.

The missions the recruits go on is fast paced and the ending will leave you begging for more I know I am.

The only thing I would worry about for younger audiences say between the ages of 15-16 would be the use of cutting to access the monsters known as hemogoblins and the fact that for some reason the author seemed to have needed to describe a ladies pubic hair since they walked in on a couple in the act of fornicating.

I did receive this as an ARC copy from ABAM and loved it so much I wanted to let everyone know about it.

SPOILER ALERT:

The monsters by the majority are called Hemogoblins. They are formed out of the hosts' blood and defend the host. However, without training the blood can take over and cause a blood lust to happen which is not a good thing. The thing is though the only thing that can kill the hemogoblins is another hemogoblin and if you've read this far you've probably guessed Ben is a host and along with a group of others are training to control their Bloods. Bloods is the name his class calls the hemogoblins.

Blood Curdling

I enjoyed this book because it was very different to most other books. Ben is a troubled soul who doesn't understand what is happening as his life shifts. It is a scarey book in some ways because you can see what the ramifications could be if it really happened. I want to read the other books and follow Ben's perilous journey.

Definintely an interesting take. The author does a good job of storytelling. My only dislike was the way he left it off for the next book in the series. Felt less like a book ending and more like a book chopped into pieces.

Thought I would read some horror to get into the Halloween spirit. An interesting premise, but I just could not get into it. The ending really leaves you hanging, and I felt it was a cheap attempt at luring the reader to buy the next book.

This Lee Isserow novella is just part I of a four part horror, science fiction, monster, slasher novel. I originally expected a vampire story, since blood is a major thematic MacGuffin. However, I was swiftly moved from that frame of mind, once readers were introduced to the monsters of the series.

Ben Graham is an adult that witnessed the murder of his mother, when he was a child. Clearly, such an event would traumatize any individual, but Ben especially has nightmares about monsters. He believes that the only way to fully heal would be to kill the young man who killed his mother. That is especially a focus since the killer is about to be released from prison. Just as he is about to get revenge, the story goes in an altogether different direction than one might expect.

Seeing as how that information is a spoiler, I will refrain from telling more of the story and just move to impressions. The novella, as one might imagine is weird, unique, and kind of cool. I didn't love the story because it kind of bogs down with very necessary exposition. Again, the explanation is necessary, but there are better ways to deal with "the pope in a pool" exposition.

Anyway, I found the novella intriguing enough to want to know more, but was disappointed that I didn't receive a full story. It bothers me when a writer releases the work piecemeal. It feels as if the writer is more concerned about utilizing a marketing ploy, rather than providing potential readers with a fascinating, complete read. My two cents.

This story is both terrifying and horrifying! Thank goodness it’s fiction, right? I was on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book which holds quite a few surprises! I highly recommend it.

Strange but different

I'm not sure how to rate this one. Completely different from anything I have ever read. That's saying way more than most think. Ben a man on a mission of revenge. A life for a life. But his blood seems to have a life of its own. Can he control It? Should he control It? So many questions with very few answers. So the sea begins.....

The Blood Lives Part One is an awesome journey! It is a horror with a dash of suspense. The main character I bonded with because of what happen to him. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting a different twist with horror. I am looking forward to reading the rest in the series!

It started slow then picked up right after Ben passed out from him getting attacked by his mom's killer. Then everything got very weird and fast.
Ben finally makes progress about what's going on with him and why He's different. Totally different read. Blood coming alive when you get stabbed or cut anyway. New whole playing field for me. As readers we get to learn right alongside the characters trying find out what in the world going on and how this is happening. I can't wait to find out more
