For years, students have asked knitting instructor Mary Scott Huff for a book on their favorite topic—knitting mittens—but one that empowers them to create their own mittens their own way. This is that book. The Mitten Handbook is much more than an instruction book—it provides a list of mitten ingredients (thumbs, cuffs, tops, edgings, and different constructions), then outlines the best tools and techniques for readers to combine them to knit their own unique creations. The book is organized into three sections. The first presents mitten elements, with a menu of choices that makes getting custom results easy. The second section covers the key aspects of construction, including how to measure for the perfect fit, yarn and gauge considerations, and which direction to knit. And the final section provides 20 complete mitten patterns.
Love the format of this book! Very straightforward and easy to understand. You can follow a pattern from the back of the book, or design your own with the directions and the build-your-own worksheet that is provided.
Not sure why I checked this out from the library since I have no time to knit right now (too busy cross stitching on a never ending project). There are a lot of great tips as well as several ready to go patterns. The patterns range in difficulty to fairly easy to really complicated(but cool looking) and complicated color work. There are also a pair of goldfish cracker inspired baby mitts which are adorable but I don't know anyone having a baby so I have reason to knit them.
Three words: Mitten Design Theory. This book gives you all the tools you need to construct your own custom mitten patterns from scratch. Who knew there were so many different kinds of mitten tip closures, thumb gussets, & cuff types? I sure didn't, but this book will teach you all you need to know. This book is a great jumping off point for the hobby knitter & knitwear designer alike- one I'm glad to have on my shelf.
The Mitten Handbook: Knitting Recipes to Make Your Own by Mary Scott Huff
I borrowed this book through the Kindle Unlimited program and was Very Disappointed! The book was basically censored so that all you were able to see were the pictures of the finished mittens and the cable or Intarsia (?) pattern used for them. No actual Directions or ANY printed words at all 😣 What a WASTE of time and a borrow/loan.
I was so excited to start this book and begin making mittens as gifts. To say the only thing the book has are some photos and maybe a few graphs for textured mitts is sad. Nothing else - no words anywhere in the book. Do not buy this book if using it as a Kindle book. It is a great disappointment.
Multiple sizes and enough combinations to cover most common gift-mitten needs (IMO). Author included worksheet calculation options to change gauge and customize further if desired. Exceeded my expectations!
This is SUCH a great idea of a book! It's a basically a mix and match style for the pieces of mittens. Cuff section, thumb section, body section, tip section. Also has 20 patterns to get you started.
This is a lovely little book. It gives you tons of options for mittens - different cuffs, bodies, thumb areas, and tops. I always think these are the most useful if you only want one book. Take a look!
I found this book to be inspiring, well-written and full of all the techniques I think would keep me making mittens for myself and others for years to come. There's nothing like combinations. Once a knitter gets competent with all the components, the sky's the limit.
I purchased the Kindle edition with promotional credit. I am glad I didn’t use my own money. There is no writing or instructions, simply the images. If I wanted a picture book, I would have bought Goodnight Moon.
i loved this handbook that gives some great patterns but more importantly reviews the different techniques in knitting making so you can design your own.
