SMASH . . . CRASH . . . WRECKING BALL! Dig into construction sites and building machines in Buildablock, a fun addition to the acclaimed Abrams Block Book series.
In this sturdy board book, young readers are introduced to more than 24 construction machines. From wrecking balls and dump trucks to forklifts and cherry pickers, this book showcases an impressive number of different machines, their names, and their functions.
Like other books in the Block Book series, Buildablock features die-cut shapes on every spread and has several durable, interactive fold-out pages, perfect for little hands. Watch as a city forms right in front of your little construction worker’s flip up one page to reveal a sky crane lifting a giant container of equipment high into the air; flip another page down to highlight the path of a tunnel borer deep underground. With bright, animated, retro-inspired artwork by Peski Studio, this is a must-have book for the little truck lover in your family.
The construction machines included in this book wrecking ball, bulldozer, grader, skipper, excavator, dump truck, tunnel borer, paver, roller, road striper, bridge builder, crane, pile driver, trencher, pipelayer, forklift, sky cranes, cherry pickers, and more!
First sentence: Smash....crash...wrecking ball! Construction site! What's going on here? Can I look too? So many trucks! So many workers? But what do they all do? We clear the way with...the bull dozer! We flatten the ground with...the grader! We haul logs away with...the skipper! We dig up the ground with...the excavator! We move heavy loads with...the dump truck!
Premise/plot: Little ones are introduced to dozens of construction vehicles in Christopher Franceschelli's Buildablock. His previous books for little ones include Cityblock, Dinoblock, Countablock, and Alphablock. Like the previous books in the series, this one features plenty of die-cut shaped pages which makes for a fun read.
My thoughts: I've only read Cityblock and Buildablock, but I loved them both. I loved the writing. There aren't many words per page, but that doesn't mean there's not much happening. This is an active story that unfolds. And little hands can keep those pages turning. (I love how easy it is to turn the pages.) If your little one loves construction sites and/or vehicles, this one is well worth reading and sharing. Perhaps again and again.
Leuke illustraties! Echt een aanrader.
Perfect board book to introduce young readers to the various construction vehicles. I initially thought that this book would appeal to mainly boys, but was pleasantly surprised to see that even the girls wanted to read this book multiple times. Fantastic conversation starter among young readers.
Another fav in this series, the kid still loves to shout which vehicle is about to be revealed. Finding the pigeon is also a must. This was in heavy rotation around 3 years old but is still enjoyable in kindergarten because of the ongoing vehicle love.
Nice job of listing construction vehicles. There are flaps. S loves it. A lot of these construction-vehicle-listing books have found their way into my life and little differentiates them from one another. About a line of narrative gives you an edge in this market - I was extremely taken with the construction-vehicle-listing book which ended with them having built an adventure playground but I can't remember what it's called. This one features a tunnel-borer and a bridge-builder, both of which are fun and less frequently featured, and at one point they break for sandwiches.
If you're sick of truck books that name the same five types of construction vehicles, this book is for you! I was reading names or construction vehicles I've never heard before 😂
There are many construction vehicles/ machines related books in the market. This is by far my favourite, the most informative and engaging, and suitable for all ages from babies, older kids to adults. 20 month-old Little-AJ loves the fun of turning the thick-pages board book, lifting the cut-out pages of different shapes, and revealing all types of construction trucks and vehicles along the way. This book introduces us to 18 construction vehicles/ machines/ tools together with their uses: wrecking ball, bulldozer, grader, skipper, excavator, dump truck, tunnel borer, paver, roller, road striper, bridge builder, crane, pile driver, trencher, pipelayer, forklift, sky cranes and cherry pickers.
I love how the illustrator has purposely included many female construction workers/ engineers/ supervisors/ architects/ contractors in the book. A woman can hold a shovel as well as another man, and a woman can definitely control a dump truck as smartly as any other man. This book will be a very good conversation starter and provoke discussion on gender stereotypes and female career choice. There are some common construction vehicles missing from this book (cement mixer, backhoe, fuel truck, flat bed truck etc). It will be nice if these could be included too to make this book more "complete". Or, what about a Buildablock part 2?
Franceschelli, Christopher Buildablock Illustrated by Peskimo BOARD BOOK Abramsappleseed, 2017 (Abrams). $16.95 Content: G.
This book shows all the different machines and their functions to build a city. One page spread will say what the machine does and then you turn a cut out page that will label the machine. As the book goes on a city begins to form from all the work being done.
This is a cute bright board book with creative lift the flap type pages. There are many pages and it is a fat book, with the spine about 1 ½ inches thick. Because the spine is so big I’m not sure how long it would hold up in a library. But this would be a good book for truck lovers.
If there is an award for “most durable children’s book” well then this takes the cake! I love the thick, high quality pages and overall design of the book because each page is a different shape. Some are printed to match the construction vehicle, some lift up, some pulls down, it is so much fun to read with surprises on every page. Perfectly geared towards young kids and yet helps me as a mother get such a feel for what makes it all so enthralling. Everything from the illustrations, wording, selection is all spot on for young readers!
For little ones who love all-things-construction! And the story it tells in very few words beginning with SMASH...CRASH... WRECKING BALL! With two tots in the big city trying to peek through the barriers surrounding the construction site asking, What's going on Here? Can I look, too? the rest of the story of discovery unfolds... The cut outs and folds add another element of delight for curious tots! Love it!
Another wonderful chunky board Block book by Franceschelli. This one focuses on two dozen construction machines and vehicles busy working on building up a city block. With die-cuts and fold out pages, this will be a fun book for toddlers who love trucks and construction.
I learned a bunch by reading this one with our infant. Admittedly, I was not familiar with my construction equipment terminology! I like the images throughout, the interactive elements, and the text.
