I picked this book up in an eclectic little shop while on vacation in Kansas City. It was an impulse buy, and I didn't expect it to be very helpful. I was proved delightfully wrong.
Meditation has always felt distant to me, like I wasn't fully capable of meditating properly. This author gave me a new perspective on it—meditation is less about trying to quiet the voice in your head, and more about distancing your true self from earthly thought. The book is about one third history, one third science, one third practical application/"how to" suggestions. The writing is not exceptional, but it's concise and thoughtful. It feels honest.
Three stars for the book itself, five stars for the conversations it sparked. I'd recommend it to anyone short on time with an interest in spiritual meditation.
This book looks sweet but, it is a deeply thoughtful introduction to several styles of enlightening meditations. You can carry it with you to your favorite meditation spot. Mine is under a tree in the backyard where I feel connected with nature. I will treasure this book always.
This was a super helpful guide to different types of meditation. Organized in tidy little sections, it will be easy to go back and find the technique that I want to revisit. Excellent book to pick up here and there in between other reading.
Lately I’ve been getting deep into self-care practices that I can use for myself in a myriad of situations I find myself in, a lot to combat anxiety and the like. One of these techniques is meditation.
I picked up this book due to my growing interest in mindfulness and meditation, and how it can calm anxiety and reduce depression, and all around good for your health. I practiced it lightly a few times but still new to it. This book breaks down the history of meditations, different practices of it through the world and the modern day version of it with some exercises you can do anywhere.
I loved it!
It’s a tiny book, little over 100-something pages. I got through it in one 2-hour session, really quick read, but it has a lot to offer, from rich history to practical benefits in today’s time.
I was kinda surprised on how intrigued I was on the history part, since I don’t care much for history, but it was honestly pretty light to read, interesting and enlightening. And the benefits of the practice is super encouraging to want to start right away.
All around, really enjoyed this little morsel of a book. Highly encourage it for anyone interested in expanding themselves whether it’s a new piece of learned history or a new self-care practice!
A really wonderful introduction to how meditation has been discovered and curated across all cultures and religions. A great jumping off point for diving deeper into study . I'm personally trying to find a deep correlation between meditation practices to potentially find a through line, a simple truth to the idea of it. What I've been having trouble with is finding specific types and subtypes within different studies to correlate in the first place. This book is very well organized when explaining different principles; there's also a long list of resources in the back for further study. The last two chapters, and last half of the book, are largely dedicated to guided practices, which I'm sure is great for some, but I wanted more history and explanation.
What I really liked about this book is the guides it gives you to meditate. It definitely showed me new ways to meditate and more ways to improve upon it. I also like how this book backs up meditation with science. If you're looking for this book to learn how meditation helps you handle stress and health, it's a good place to start. It backs up meditation with several studies. It also gives a brief history of meditation across all religious practices and other practices outside the religious sphere. At some points the author became a little to spiritual or religious for me, but overall, it gave me new ways to practice my meditation.
The first section of this book is very informative. I have been meditating for over 15 years, have read various books on all sorts of mediations and different religions and spiritualities, and I still learned some new things that make me want to explore more deeply. The rest of the book fell flat. It is highly spiritual without any kind of supporting information. Even as someone who is spiritual, it was a turn off. There is no practical meditation advice for those adverse to spirituality. Definitely not for beginners.
I’m enjoying this “A Little Bit Of” Series. Each book is 125 pages long and can be read in a day. They give you a good introduction to a topic, background, and thought provoking ways to apply the theories.
This author backed her statements up with science and illuminated the diversity of how meditation has been a guiding light across generations, geographies and religions.
For sure, one of those books to take with you everywhere and help you focus and become one with yourself. It’s absolutely incredible due to the subject matter and how you’re able to get an insight on medication and how it can work for you.
Quick and easy to read book giving you the right information you need about the subject. Perfect for first-timers and more.
This book start your journey in the world meditation, is a great book, when you have finished, you have a map of what is, the history, the type, guided, and guided meditation. But not have journaling and Hawaiian meditation or Indian, or other but remain a very good book It have big part of "what is meditation in 21th centuries" and this is a great things. I recommend this book!
Always to think about how you can become more mindful. I took a lot of notes while reading this book and will begin a Chakra Meditation journey. I am finding that as I get older and have become the caregiver for my husband, I need to promote my emotional health to give me more patience.
Great, quick read with a lot of useful information.
Fair overview and helped put some things into context, but too mystical for my taste. Most forms of meditation receive a "how to" page except transcendental meditation (which I wanted) and Tibetan-style meditation.
Cute, simple book. It definitely has encouraged me to meditate. My prior understanding was that meditating had to do with “not thinking” but I’ve found it’s the opposite.
I would have loved to see some pictures in the book, but that’s okay.
Excelente para principiantes, mucha información importante. Me ha generado mucha paz y conocimiento necesario para emplear la meditación en mi día a día.
Great book to start learning about meditation (good for beginners)! The author tells the connections between meditation and different religions and explore different techniques.
I loved how straight to the point this book was, everything i learned in just a few pages and at the end, how I can go more in-depth thanks to the bibliography. It's a great book for beginners 💕
