BRANDON MULL is the #1 New York Times best-selling author of the Fablehaven, Dragonwatch, Beyonders, and Five Kingdoms series. A kinetic thinker, Brandon enjoys bouncy balls, squeezable stress toys, and popping bubble wrap. He lives in Utah in a happy little valley near the mouth of a canyon with his wife, Erlyn, their eleven children, and three mischievous cats. Brandon loves meeting his readers and hearing about their experiences with his books.
My son asked me to read this series after he had read it. So it’s been fun to talk about the plot and characters with him.
Imaginative and fun! There was a lot of very clever ideas and storylines in this book. The author also did a pretty good job of world building, developed likable and heroic characters, and had a well woven story built through the five books. Each book takes place in a different kingdom and the author successfully creates five unique kingdoms while keeping the characters and the overall story arc consistent. This series is not has intense as the author’s “Fablehaven” series, but still has plenty of action. In the age range of 8-14 or so.
The first two books were a little slow for me, but by the third I was invested with the characters and wanted to read, but I probably wouldn’t have kept reading the series if my son hadn’t been looking over my shoulder. But I’m also not a big fantasy reader so throw that in the mix. I defiantly struggle with 11 and 12 year olds being able to save the day and act that mature. But it makes it fun for his target audience. Some of the plot was predictable, but perfect for a younger audience. My only other comment was that it seems that each books ends very quickly.
But my son loved it. And I appreciate it for its imagination and being clean!
3 stars for me. 5 for my son. So a split down the middle. ; )
I read Brandon Mull books to be able to discuss them with my grandson. This one reminded me a lot of They Beyonders. Sort of the same premise, different characters, facts, etc. But that having been said, I enjoyed this series. Mull writes good characters, and his focus on quite young heroes is certainly different. I don't imagine I would have had that must strength of character, not to mention strength, at thirteen. I'm also no Sherlock Holmes nor even an Ann Shirley, but literature allows us to glimpse other lives vicariously from the comfort of our armchairs. Mull's books are a good read.
Super fun fantasy series full of magic powers and quests and friendship. Cole sees his friends kidnapped and taken to a new world, so he follows them there, hoping to rescue them. This new world just happens to be threatened by many evil powers and Cole just happens to be the key to saving them all. I would for sure recommend this series to any teenage reader.
A great adventure story, reading with my 10yo son -- exciting enough to keep him coming back for more, but not scary to keep him awake. Each book is an extension of the adventure - new magic in each new area they explore.
Sarai and I (my daughter) loved this series! We were hooked. After each book we couldn't wait for the next one. Since we listened to the audio books we decided to buy the book collection and read them all over again.
This series is definetly my number 1 book series!! I loved it so much that I even emailed the author asking for more books when I finished. My favorite book in the series was definetly every single one!
I liked the idea of it and it was well written but the ending was simply gut-wrenching! I can’t believe they just forgot everything! It felt like the book had no purpose at all because for the characters it’s like it never happened

Again, not as good as Fabelhaven, but still gets the reader to think outside of the box! Mull delivered with a new set of mystical adventures, this time set in a far away place.
