Last Alpha: A Highland Shifter Romance

Rate this book
He never wanted to fall in love. She never planned to let him.

Jenny Layne has made a career out of investigating werewolf reports, but every case has only confirmed that shapeshifters are the stuff of legend or madness. Until now. Lured to a remote Scottish estate to meet a researcher working on the science behind the werewolf phenomenon, Jenny finds steadily mounting evidence that something strange is running wild in the hills.

Billy Stewart has traveled the world in pursuit of stories of shapeshifters and other strange phenomena, but the last thing he ever expected to find was love. Billy is not a man who falls easily, but when he does, it is a force of nature. When he meets Jenny he knows immediately that she is his soulmate, but Jenny is not so sure. Are his intense feelings for her just some kind of insanity, or is Jenny turning him away because that's exactly what she always does when a guy gets interested?

By turns passionate romance and gripping paranormal thriller, Last Alpha tells the story of two people whose paths collide with earth-shattering consequences. As love boils over and the dark secrets buried away in Jenny and Billy's past rise to the surface, a night of murder raises the stakes yet higher.

And as she fights for her own survival, Jenny must face perhaps the biggest question of them all. In matters of life, death and love, can Beauty ever really hope to tame the Beast?

I received a copy of this book directly from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I wanted so very badly to like this book. Parts of it, I found exceptionally well written… and other parts, lacked. As far as the technical side of the writing went, it was nearly flawless. I spotted less than a handful of noticeable errors throughout the text. For the most part, the writing was spot on. There wasn’t an overabundance of awkward sentences, misspelled words, or formatting errors.

The plot was interesting and packed full of suspense. It was obvious that the author put a lot of thought into the details of the plot and the character development. The world building was spot on… I found it fascinating. The problem is… I was also bored. The pacing of the story dragged on at a pace that made it hard to keep my interest. The tension was missing for me, and the romance, with the exception of some pretty steamy sex scenes, was lukewarm. The characters barely knew each other and fell in love at a pace that seemed unrealistic given the obstacles to their relationship.

Overall, the book was a bit of a mixed bag. I loved the characters, the suspense, and the mystery. I loved the world building, the detail, plot, and setting… I just wasn’t enthralled by the writing. This didn’t feel like a romance. It felt like a dark suspense/mystery with a side element of romance thrown in as an afterthought—and that’s wonderful if that’s what you want to read, but it’s not what the book promised. I ended up giving this book 3 stars. I didn’t really like it, and, to be honest, I could have put it down several times and been okay with that decision. It wasn’t an awful book, it just wasn’t what I thought I was getting, and in the end, it just wasn’t to my tastes.

If you’re a fan of dark, suspenseful paranormal plots, you’re probably going to like this book. If you’re looking for a paranormal romance though, you may not enjoy this book as much as you were expecting.

Ruby Fielding’s Last Alpha is written in a way that is so different than most shifter stories. This story is based in the Scottish highlands and an American blogger Jenny goes over to write meet Jonathan Carr. He has been preserving and re-introducing wildlife into land he bought and preserved. Also he is looking for the way to turn “werewolves” as a cure for disease.

This book has some very deep reading in it and some very erotic scenes. It is one of the best shifter books I have read in a while. Please note there are lots of terms that are Scottish so if you are American like me be ready to look them up.
I am so ready for more from Ruby.

Ruby Fielding’s characters are well developed and have feelings and convictions everyone can relate to. Her characters also have humor and a touch of whimsy.

The “Last Alpha” by Ruby Fielding has a unique twist on shifter romance. I haven’t read a shifter romance that has given me the POV of the hero in wolf form before. I found this captivating.

Her heroine Jenny is sweet, skeptical, wary, and sometimes downright snarky. I loved reading about Jenny’s journey for finding a factual shifter story turning into a journey that she learns to come to terms with her parental relationships, her wariness to trust other’s at face value, and finding true love and her soul-mate in Billy.

I fell in love with Billy the minute I met him. He is unlike any other alpha male I have read about. He is strong in a subtle way, trusting, open, and tender. He is intense and forthright about his feelings for Jenny. He is also an innocent, and I do mean an innocent. That is until he first meets Jenny in her hometown of Maldon.

Now tell me how many shifter books have you read that the main alpha male is an innocent. I haven’t read a one. I am telling you, Ruby has taken the part of alpha male and made him more appealing and attainable, if that could have been possible.

The scene of Billy and Jenny coming together for the first time, this also being Billy’s first time, is unbelievable. The intense emotion, the raw feelings, the explosion of their release is erotic (they don’t become as one the first time).

I recommend this book to anyone looking for something different or even refreshing from the norm of a shifter romance.

I am giving "Last Alpha" 5 Full Moons.

I was given an ARC of "Last Alpha" for an honest opinion.

An intriguing mystery.

This is a very well written novel.
It kept me guessing until almost the end.
I'd think I had it figured out but another red herring would pop up...credit to the author as I read/have read so many mysteries that I can usually tell whodunnit long before the end!

The paranormal theme added greatly to the story...I admit I do have a "thing" for wolves (blame Twilight!) but the scientific research angle was a new one for me.

The main characters, Jenny and Billy, were not only believable but also likeable and it was wonderful to see their relationship grow...it made a pleasant change to not have them hopping into bed with each other after 10 minutes.

The supporting characters were also well written....and all had an air of mystery about them

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope it is the start of a series.

(RabidReads.com. 3.5/5 Stars. Shifter romances are a dime a dozen, or so it seems these days. It’s hard to find one that is truly different from the rest, but I think this book is truly one of the different ones. Not only is it a romance, but it’s also a mystery. That being said, while it’s different, it’s not without a few problems.

Jenny is an American blogger visiting Scotland for the first time. She’s a house guest of a mega rich man, Jonathan Carr, a man that is bankrolling studies on werewolves. Jenny’s blog is about weird things in the world and lately werewolves have been a big thing on her blog. When she is invited to come to Scotland, of course she goes. When she gets there, she finds Billy, a man she met in America at a court trial. A man who thought he was a werewolf was on trial after killing someone. They were both attending the trial because of the werewolf aspects. Billy is working for Mr. Carr, something she did not know. She had developed a friendship with him, until he abruptly told her he loved her and wanted her forever. That was it for her. So she is suitably shocked to find him at Carr’s estate. She starts to wonder if she’s been manipulated into coming to Scotland as Billy is right in the middle of all the werewolf studies. When a woman’s body is found, after what looks like an animal attack, Jenny is also in the middle of everything, as well.

I was only a few chapters into the book when I checked to see if the author was British. That’s because of some the phrases that Jenny, an American, uses. She just didn’t sound like an American young woman. And I was right, this is by a British author. I have no problem with that, as I have read many books by British authors and have enjoyed them. But I could easily tell, and I don’t think the author intended for that to happen. Another problem I had was how slow the book started out. I know the author has to set the scene and introduce the characters, but it lagged a bit for me. Halfway in though, and I was really turning pages.

The romance was very sensual, but the first sex scene came out of the blue for me. It just pretty much happens, even while Jenny is really questioning anything to do with Billy. I just didn’t see the moment when Jenny decides that’s what she wants, so I was a bit shocked at the abruptness. There are plenty of sexual scenes, and they are gritty at times and very real. Emphasis on real.

I am choosing to not address anything specific to do with werewolves since I don’t want to tell any spoilers. Suffice it to say that werewolves are real in this author’s world building. The mystery was good, although I figured most of it out early on. There was a big twist that I didn’t see coming and a smaller one, as well. I love when books can surprise me, and this one certainly did. I also enjoyed the fact that there are supposedly Scottish legends concerning werewolves.

Because this book was so different and did surprise me, I do recommend it to adult paranormal romance readers. It’s not your usual paranormal romance, but is a worthy entry into the PNR world-in my opinion at least.

I’m the real thing. A natural shifter.

As far as I know, the last of my kind. What a scary thought! Can you imagine being the very last of your kind?? Initial thoughts while starting in on the story is that Ruby starts off running & is very descriptive. The fact that it is set in Scotland is awesome!!! Definitely love the descriptions when it comes to any & everything Scottish!!! Now that I am finished and trying to find the right words to do this review, I have to take a step back first. Overall, I was firmly caught in Ruby's web, ensconced in this story, determined to figure out what was going on before the story revealed the answers. Thankfully I was wrong most every time! That is a great thing because it shows how original, how different & how unique the story is. Now to think about the story on the deeper level...without ruining any single part of the story... The intensity level sure amps up quickly and often, which makes it a very furrific read! ‘All I ever wanted was to find companionship in others like me, and I ended up falling in love.’ This isn't a romance story about shifters, this is a last wolf shifter story with a side of romance...until it becomes a romance, then shifts to a shifter romance. ‘We don’t do all that. It has to be for life. A soul-mate.’ ‘He meant everything he said. He believed it. That he was a werewolf, the last of his kind. And that he was in love with Jenny.’ Ok, maybe in my 'real life' I would think a guy a nut job if he said all that to me, but since I prefer to live with my head - and heart - in paranormal romance books, I would LOVE to have that all said to me!! That is actually one of the very cool parts to this story - how much it shifts, grows almost. 'Tender intimacy taking over from animal intensity.' While this line describes something else (obviously! snicker), to me it describes the story perfectly! This book ranges from the lightheartedness to highly intense, humor to solemn, and back again, making this story very hard to define, all in a good way though! The psychosis of the wolf, of the man, of the woman, are all separate entities, even when they really aren't. Trust me, after reading the book you will understand what I mean. I can't find a way to say more about it without giving spoilers. Because of these vastly different features this isn't a book that I would call a shifter story...until it is one!! I love how you get sucked in and pulled through this amazing adventure! Ruby has created such an innovative shifter story, where nothing is like any other shifter book that I have ever read! And I have read a LOT!!! And that ending?!?! I was NOT expecting that at ALL! FANGTASTIC!!! Even though this is the first book that I have read of Ruby's, I can already see just how gifted of an author she is! She has impressed me very much with this book and I cannot wait to experience her other stories!

Last Alpha was to me different then the other Paranormal Alpha's I have read.
Jenny Layne is a blogger, she wants to prove werewolves exsist, which as of today she still hasn't proved it. Being invited to Craigellen Castle by Mr. Carr. So here she was at the Aberdeen airport renting a car to drive to the Scottish Highlands. Did you know everything is different in a car driving the Scottish roads. The driver is on the opposite side of the car and drives on the road on the opposite side. Jenny had to really constraint to make sure she was driving properly, she was just so excited it's like a dream come true she was even a day early.
Jenny met Lilian a scientist who studies and works regenerating and repurposing human tissue. Could she make a werewolf? So far Lilian had not.. Billy Stewart traveled around the world looking to find anyone who was different like he was, he has been hiding who he was for a long time. Jenny met Billy at the trial of Jackson Taylor who said he was a werewolf. Jackson was found mentally unstable and sent to an institution. Billy realized his feelings for Jenny where different then any other women. He didn’t understand or know why. As the love story continues you find you have to keep reading to find out what happens to Billy and Jenny. But than there are twists and turns. This book has some slow parts but don't get discouraged keep reading. I was gifted this ARC for a honest and truthful review.

This review is from: Last Alpha: A Highland shifter romance (Paperback)
I was given this book as an ARC for an honest review

I absolutely loved this book. Jenny Layne is a blogger that writes about unusual topics...one of them being the existence of werewolves. When she is drawn backk to her home town to cover the murder trial of a guy she went to school with, she meets a kindred spirit in Billy Stewart. Billy falls hard for her during their time together covering the trial. But when he confesses his love for her at the end of the trial, he never gets an answer to confession. They are interrupted by her father and Jenny storms off. Fast forward a few months. Jenny is in Scotland after an invitation from Jonathan Carr...a billionaire supposed doing research into werewolves. What she finds there is Billy Stewart....it was him who put her on Carr's trail. Jenny is upset at first and even thinks about leaving when she realizes she was set up, until Billy convinces her to stay and check things out. Then, strange things start happening...like wolves howling and a murder. And Billy still has more secrets to reveal. Jenny is shaken when Billy finally reveals his secret. But then it is Billy's turn to be shaken when he realizes that he is not alone ...as he thought. But there are still things hidden neither of them expected...and when they are revealed, Jenny and Billy are in more danger than either of them knew about.

Title: LAST ALPHA
Series: N/A
Category /Genre: Paranormal Romance
Recommended for: 18+ due to sexual content
Received from: Ruby Fielding (in exchange for an honest review)
Grammar/editing: A – near perfect

This is a stand-alone story.

This is one of those books that I call a relaxing read. There is a bit of suspense and definitely some turmoil, but it never seeped into my bones and made me feel tense. A nice change of pace and welcomed during a time when my own life is full of angst and boiling emotions.

The main characters, Billy and Jenny, are fantastically layered and real. Jenny’s cautious, almost fearful, and analytic approach to the thought of love was frustrating, yet understandable. There was no insta-love for her (though Billy was sure as soon as he met her). Instead, she allowed it to grow organically, even fought it a little, and was amazed herself at the realization when she was sure it was true. I loved that. Again, just something a little different from the usual hard and fast of so many shifter romance stories.

This is the first book I have read from Ruby Fielding. I’d love to read more. I’m curious if the relaxed pace is her normal or I just stumbled on to the right one at the right time for me.

The Last Alpha by Ruby Fielding
Jenny Layne has been asked to come to the castle of Jonathan Carr to observe his project and perhaps write an article. It isn’t everyday a blogger like Layne gets asked to come and possible observe research into her passion, wolves and more importantly the possibility of actual shifters. Since a young man when he swears he saw his father killed by a werewolf Carr has tried to find a source. Now Layne needs to understand how this all affects her. Carr’s gamekeeper seems to hold a secret that he doesn’t want exposed. Just sitting back and enjoying the trip just isn’t in the cards for Layne, she find herself involved with the thoughts of the locals and this game keeper fascinates her, (once an old flame) is she being drawn back to him and when he confesses something to her so bazaar how is she going to keep it all together. What secrets does Carr have and what has it got to do with the bizarre confession coming from Stewart the gamekeeper. There are a lot of twists and excitement in this story and I can’t let it out. All I can say is if you want something to read with lots of excitement, a werewolf, and the secret of the Last Alpha well this one is for you. I loved this book.

I received this book as an ARC for an honest review. Jenny Layne is an amateur paranormal blogger in the States. She is always looking for something that could possibly be true in the paranormal world. She receives a message that an English man (Jonathan Carr) who lives in a Scotland castle was privately funding a Scientist Lilian Lee's research into proving that werewolves are real and do exist. She decides why not check it out for herself and flies to Scotland. When she get to Scotland she rents a car and drives to the castle she gets there a day early. She meets Jonathan and his Stewart Billy. Jenny met Billy a couple months ago in her home town during a trial to one of her classmates claiming to be a werewolf and that was the last time she saw him til now. Jonathan lets Jenny know that yes she can write her blogg about him and what he is doing but after and only after she has seen everything and gone back to the states and that is if she chooses to go back. Jonathan ask Jenny to be his PR person to let everyone know that he is doing nothing wrong. Come follow Jenny on her discovery to Romance, Murder, Mystery and more than meets the eye. See for yourself is werewolves are real or not.

What extreme measures would you take to be a werewolf? Wealthy, obsessed, eccentric millionaire Jonathan Carr paid a fortune towards werewolf research in the guise of cancer research. He hoped Dr. Lillian Lee and team of scientists can make his dream come true. Jonathan was a survivor of a brutal werewolf attack that killed his father and he has secrets. What are his true intentions towards both Billy Stewart and Jenny Layne?

Billy Stewart (Scottish, alpha werewolf) thought he kept his secrets well hidden. He was sought out and hired by Jonathan Carr who funded his expeditions. His expeditions are to travel, chase werewolf stories, and gather evidence. He met Jenny Layne in America on one of his quests for other werewolves and misconceptions have kept them apart. She didn't believe him and considered him a madman. Will he be able to save her in Scotland? Which shifter is her mate?

I am also into a good shifter story.
So I was happy to try this one out.

It started promising as the setting was in Scotland, one of my favorite countries. It was so funny that she wanted to step into the wrong site of the car, so recognizable. And the accent was even written down when some characters talked, I liked that.

But next I had to wait a long time for the werewolf to show up for real in the story, that was a pity. There were a few hints to the wolf from time to time. But it took some time since he came out, first she didn't believe him telling he was one. But with the events happening afterwards and seeing it with her own eyes, she has to believe him.
The hot passion between them finally happening was fantastic to read and happening again and again, which I didn't mind.

The last chapter made things okay again, except for the last page which has a little cliffhanger for the future. Luckily the story between Jenny and Billy had a lovely ending.

Wow my first by Rudy Fielding. She is impressive, imaginative and creative what a great read.

This book is well written full of mystery and action.
First chapter threw me a little until I understood it was from the wolf's point of view then it was cool. The main story is about Jenny who writes her own blog about possible paranormal story's in real life.

she was invited to come to Scotland to visit Mr Carr in his castle but later finds out a man she meet in the USA is there also and he might have had something to do with the invitation.

finding out the truth in this story is going to be difficult, and dangerous since someone has been killed.

Really impressive and highly enjoyable full of action and hotness great book it's in my must read list of books!

Book given for an honest review and I honestly loved it

Jenny Layne is a blogger/investigator in anything werewolf related and her latest adventure takes her to Scotland to investigate werewolves.
Billy Stewart hunts down any paranormal story all over the world. When he comes across Jenny he knew she was something special but she wont let him get close to her. Will they be able to overcome obstacles in their way to find love with each other after the tragic events.

I loved the characters in this story and their interaction with each other. The author created great characters that you just want to root for.

This is for mature paranormal romance book lovers who like a little mystery with their romance.

Loved this shifter story, this one keeps you guessing for a while, and I must admit I was so tempted to look ahead to see what was going to happen because of the twists and turns. Loved the characters Billy and Jenny are so alive I would love to meet them one day if I'm ever in Scotland. Mr Carr keeps you guessing always sort of around but with a air of mystery surrounding him. Well written the scenery very well described I could almost feel the fog and the midges, the romance was true and led into the steamy scenes effortlessly. A great read can't wait for more.

This was my first book by Ruby Fielding. It won't be my last. This isn't your average shifter romance. When Jenny gets an invitation to a Scottish estate, she is looking for answers about the paranormal. She finds more than that. She finds a man she met in the US. Although she is nervous about him, she finds herself drawn to Billy. Billy has been searching for another shifter. He believes he is the last one. Did he find another one? Did he find his soul mate? I really enjoyed the story, and look forward to reading more by this author.

Jenny travels to the highlands at the request of an eccentric billionaire, to get information on the possibility of werewolves being real. What he shows her is unreal, a research lab searching for ways to recreate a werewolf. When people start dying and crazy things start happening, Jenny needs to make a choice to stay or go, but will that choice be taken from her hands! You won't believe the ending.

I am not real sure what to say here. I found myself reading this story and finding myself rather puzzled about the flow. The plot concept is great but the flow of the story just left me scratching my head most of the time and I found myself skimming a lot of the pages just to catch a bit of the details here and there. It is not a bad story.. just in interesting one with A LOT going on.

This book was different from the usual shifter book. There were more twists and turns than a roller coaster. The process of the shifting was well described and I could almost feel the pain. The feelings and emotions of the characters were well developed. There was some romance, danger, violence and explicit sex.

Great Story, Great Characters Jenny Lane is a semi-successful werewolf story blogger who follows leads on the next story, looking for any kind of validation that they might be real. Her latest tip has landed her in the Highlands of Scotland. She arrives at the castle of billionaire Mr. Carr, a man who has hired a team of scientists to come up with a serum that will create werewolf shifters. While there, she runs in to Billy Stewart, a man she had seen in the Spring. Last time she had seen him, Billy's intensity and his feelings caused her to flee and avoid him. Eventually, being around him has reminded her how much she enjoyed being with him. This time, his intense feelings for her don't make her flee. As they grow closer, weird things start to happen. She's  not sure if she can trust Billy and crazy things he's telling her, but something inside her won't let her stay away.I found Jenny Lane to be a very interesting character. Many female characters in Paranormal books tend to have self-confidence or the subject is kind of avoided, but Jenny is not like this. While she has started finding success with her blog, which also led to YouTube success, she is self-depreciating about it and doesn't really see herself being particularly successful in the field of journalism. When she starts to examine Billy's feelings towards her, she views herself as just ordinary and throughout the book she doesn't see herself as someone who deserves to be so loved by someone else. The way the author writes her, rather than her being annoying with self-pity, I found her very relatable and real. While there's not as good a picture of Billy, it's not really necessary because we only see him in Jenny's POV. Basically, he's spent his life hoping he's not alone, and then when he finds Jenny, basically, his life is all about his feelings for her. I really liked this book. This is the first modern book that's taken place in the Highlands that I've read in a long time. The author didn't make it obvious about what was happening (which I appreciate) and I loved the wolve's POV. I would definitely recommend.
