The essence of the Christian message is The Gospel, the Good News that God is real, God is good, and God has not given up on us! Unfortunately, this essential message so easily gets buried beneath religious agendas, political positions, moral issues, personal freedoms, and ethical beliefs. When we start to feel overwhelmed with all that Christianity seems to be, it's time to Remember The Gospel and rediscover what it truly is!
Don't let yourself get bogged down by the over-abundance of Scripture references. Keep moving forward - skip them and return to them later if you feel like they are breaking up the flow of the reading. Also, I would have given this a 5-star rating if there were just a few more personal stories along the way. Stories make the book. That being said, my favourite chapters are 10 and 12. I highlighted entire sections of each of these.
Eddy's description of the misconception that many Christians have about the Love of God really struck a cord with me. Also, his breakdown of the full meaning of Christ's Resurrection and Christianity's meaninglessness without it was poignant and brought me more simple clarity on the subject.
I found myself highlighting nearly all of Chapter 12 while laughing heartily at the 'Distractions' I remember from when my parents first became Christians when I was a pre-teen and we were forced into a zeal/fear combo that held my siblings and I in a state of cynical rebellion for years (one brother is still there.) I laughed because I've embraced the true grace of Christ since then (most days) but at their core these 'Distraction' topics that Eddy expands on in Chapter 12 are no laughing matter as many people left (and continue to leave) the Church and turned away from God due to these things. Some of these topics were obvious and still hard to swallow but Eddy makes the difficulty of them somewhat more palatable. Some of the distraction topics were new (or a new viewpoint) to me and they really made me delve deeper into considering which ones still hold me back from the true living out of my faith today.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is skeptical of Christianity, anyone who was connected to a 'church' in the past that let them down or turned them away. Also, for the Christian who is living every day, trying to live for Jesus but feeling frustrated with a lack of authenticity around them. Read it. It will help you strip away the excess and focus on the main thing - The Gospel.
