There's little to none to tell about this fourth book that I haven't said before about the first three. Kong continues to extend the series, while the quests/ challenges are getting harder and harder all the time. I love the way the base-building is being done by the author here.

As always, when I find something supremely enjoyable and so delicious in the devouring, I tend to go overboard with gonzo reviews. I rave like a ravager. So what makes this one different than all the rest?
This is JUST like Skyrim. Only, this is totally humorous and full of all the self-referential Earthly goodness of an actual player scamming an immersive reality-game. :)
In this novel, we're moving a bit beyond legendary enchanting and going right into legendary alchemy skills. We've got that smithing going, too, but the real focus is on becoming uber-boss and dragging his whole village kicking and screaming into uber-ville with him. Fun? Hell, yeah. Plenty of side quests that turn epic on a dime, new characters climbing the ranks, and at the center of it all, Richter. We're all the Richter for him. :)
All across the board, I feel the leveling-up magic. Scamming the system has never been so fun. Power builds aside, we're in the territory of grabbing every single skill only to learn it can become utterly epic. :) And more than Skyrim, there's even more customization and secrets to uncover. It's almost dreamlike in how it caters to us gamers. :)
So, I like it, then? Hell, yah. :)

FFS, only 40 minutes in and we've already got a case of "teehee, isn't domestic violence funny and cute if it's the woman beating her husband unconscious?" More misogyny and homophobia to follow. This author has serious issues, which are only more obvious when the "hero" has a pointless one night stand, saying he's going to "grind the pretty" off a "sexy" elf villager. Kong is a fucking creep.
Ugh, now he has been dropped into one of his fantasies (three naked a-list actresses writhing around naked) and in between disgusting comments about them he's having a homophobic tantrum about the handsome actor he's in denial about also fantasizing about. Nothing not gross here.
I could go on and on, but the gist is, this just gets more and more about Kong's boner the longer it goes on, and I can't put up with his crap enough to enjoy the world building anymore.

So I have been really enjoying this series and suddenly....this one took a major nose dive!
First, the pop culture references are starting to get annoying. And "fun bags" seriously???
Second, nothing happens in this book! In prior books I was excited to read and find out how things would progress in the Land but now I barely care to read the next book.
I'm disappointed. It feels like he is stretching out a good story to make money and that is a real bummer!

Wow, how boring was that?
I feel like nothing really happened this whole entire audiobook that was worth mentioning...besides maybe Alma leveling? Or maybe the Doctor Who reference? Even so, I can honestly say the only part I rather enjoyed was the Dark Abhorration monster. All other battles were dull and unnecessary, and even the leveling and looting was yawn worthy.
This is where I have issues with long series, especially LitRPG ones..at some point it is just TOO much and the story just drags on. That's where we are right now.
I feel like I am hog tied and being dragged behind a ridiculously slow train, eating dirt and wishing for something to happen.
Do I even bother finishing the series?

Way too crude and crass
I do t know what made him go off the deep end for this 4th book but as much as I enjoyed the first three books, the juvenile humor was just too much in this one. I actually gave up 80% of the way into it. It just became too much.

What s the deal with the misleading title.
The story was great but there is one of let down. The title is very misleading. Actually it is downright wrong. The title is Catacombs. They talk a lot about going down into the catacombs, however they never actually step foot into the catacombs, not once. The title should have been something else. Other then that is was a great story.

This doesn't seem like a novel, not since the first installment. There is no plot to be found. The book is just of string of events.

As a teacher (wife and mother), I find that the only time I get to actually PLAY RPGs is during the summer or week+ breaks from school. Listening to the main character going on adventures, leveling, learning spells and completing quests scratches that itch to play.
The story itself is a great read. The pacing of events keeps you hooked and wanting more. There is a great balance to character development and action. The humor in the book is spot on for this genre. I've found myself laughing out loud many times. I hope Mr. Kong continues this series, because I can't get enough.

“The Land: Catacombs” is the fourth book in the well-crafted Chaos Seed Literary Role-Playing game (LitRPG) series written by Aleron Kong; said to be the father of the genre. As with the previously released audiobooks, this one is wonderfully narrated by Nick Podehl; who has grown to be one of my favorites to listen too. This audiobook picks up where book three left off. Because this is truly a piece of LitRPG, our character grows to face new and more powerful challenges all the while struggling to balance his own advancement with that of his growing empire; or town. If you have listened to the previous three books in the series, grabbing this one for a credit is not even a question. If you have not yet listened to any of the books in the series, I recommend you start by picking up the first book in the series and working your way through them in order.
What I have come to enjoy with the series is that each book focuses on a specific theme or plotline, all the while maintaining the overall feel of a character maturing in their skills. This of it as a major quest while there are a number of minor quests still needing to be done. So, when you finish one book, you feel a sense of accomplishment and completion, yet the overall storyline progresses at a steady pace. Here in book four, there is a renewed focus on magic and more notably alchemy. The characters discover the importance of enchanting items, but such requires special crystals to achieve. Hence the name of Catacombs is given to this book in the series.
Parallel to leveling up his alchemy skills, our main character battles the many needs of a growing community of people. They want to grow and be used for the better of the two, and to accomplish this, they need new buildings or items which sets our protagonist off in search of materials. I enjoyed seeing the town grow and as it becomes bigger, their requirements for extra protections keeping it secured from attack. As with the previous books, the main character also faces the trauma of his past decisions which at times had dire consequences. As stated in previous reviews, I enjoy the sense of growth and expansion to both characters and world, as this really gives one the feeling of a role-playing game. The author is able to balance questing, action, and growth along with character development to keep the story interesting. There is always a fine balance as to what is better for the character or the village; including wanting to move from a militia to a full-fledged army for improved protection.
The book continues to follow the many characters surrounding our main character and we get a view into their continued progression; including that of his dragonling familiar. The book continues the banter, zings, pokes, and humor of the previous books, but I found this one to be a bit heavier on humor having a more sexual tone then than the previous two books; similar to the first book in the series. This book also seemed to have a darker overtone then some of the previous ones, which may be a setup for what is coming in future books. We are also introduced to a few new creatures such as a saproling and a rather scary dark aberration. But, we are still faced with the bugbear invasion and a few other enemies. These are only a sampling of the many various creatures our characters encounter in this book. The ability of the main character to be able to transfer knowledge or spells to others was a unique twist keeping things a bit more interesting.
Nick Podehl does an exceptional job narrating and continuing to be the voice of the Chaos Seed series. I like when a good narrator is able to produce all the works of a series as this gives a level of consistency, and even better when that narrator has over three-hundred and thirty titles currently narrated on Audible. From a veteran narrator, what more would you expect that a professionally produced book which includes just the right amount of sound effects to make you feel like you are truly in the game. I do not recall any audio artifacts (swallows, page turns, etc.) while listening. It is such a joy to listen to a piece where the narrator knows his material and can help augment the story with his voice.
For parents or younger readers, it is difficult for me to recommend this book due to the heavier use of vulgar and sexual language. There are plenty of innuendos thrown around like a pitcher in a world series game. To me, it felt like the author took a few steps backward in this area, where the material did not have to be so adult-focused to be considered funny or witty. This book in the series is more geared towards mature audiences.
To summarize, if you have journeyed with our main character through books one, two and three, it only makes sense that you would want to pick up book four. You will not be disappointed when you do. It feels bigger, darker, and vaster than the previous books; which is a good thing. The series is one of my favorite LitRPG series I have listened to thus far, and I look forward to future books in the series.

I had this series in my 'to read' list for a good while, but I kept putting it aside and choosing something else because I don't play RPG games and I assumed I wouldn't understand or enjoy it much. But, I WAS SOO WRONG. You guys, this series is so fun! Just a couple of weeks in and I am already on book 5. I cannot put it down! Book 1 is amazing, but they keep getting better! The story is packed with action, not drawn out and wordy. Where I am at right now in book 5, the main character has only been in the land for 112 days. Book 1, 2, and 3 cover only about a month of time in the story! In such a short time, so much happens. Not a dull moment! I don't know what I am going to do with myself when I finish the last book out right now, but I fear I will have a repeat of when I finished the Kingkiller Chronicles, where I go through the first 100 pages of about 20 new books and then put them down because they just don't compare. Books this amazing will ruin you for a while... I am sure some of you know what I am talking about! Luckily this amazing author writes his books incredibly fast (I want to say he wrote all six in like 18 months or so? Could be wrong.) so book 7 will be out soon :). I find it incredible that Aleron Kong can do that! He is an Indie writer with no publisher, who wrote, edited, formatted and started selling on Amazon on his own. Much Respect!! I will add that I don't understand some of the negative comments. A few are complaining about all of the status updates in the book. That is what makes litRPG!?! I love the status updates. I find it fun to think about how the main character chooses to allocate his points and then compare his decisions to how I would do it. It adds so much character depth because you literally have quantitative data showing you how he is growing/changing in just about every way! Some people don't like the dirty humor, either, and they find the main character to be some sort of pervy womanizer. I find it hilarious! It has been a long time since a book has made me literally laugh out loud, and I can't count how many times I have lol'd while reading The Land! Some parts of the book, I'll admit, are shocking. I will be reading and thinking, "no way the author will go there".. and then.. he goes, and passes "there" lol. But I think the books are better for it! Those are the scenes that are the most memorable! (the assassin scene, yikes! lol! Kong thought of the worse way to die and made it even more terrible!! haha!) Anyways, I could go on and on about my love for this story, but I'll wrap it up. For anyone on the cuff about this one, just do it. If you enjoy audible books, get the audible. I got the audible because I was so into the book that I wanted to listen to it while driving and doing house work. It is the best audio book I have ever listened to and the man who reads it is my new favorite, hands down. Overall, I am obsessed with the Chaos Seeds story and chances are you will be too. This series has everything I love about the fantasy genre, but at the same time, it is so different, refreshing, and new. When I can't stop thinking about the story and characters, when I want to read/listen whenever I have spare time, and when I am telling everyone about these books in hopes that they will read it too, just so I have someone to talk to about it..... this is how I KNOW it is a good story.

GREAT BOOK!
This series is Great. It's got action galore, lots of neat monsters, swords, magic and it's all wrapped up around a fantastic story.
It doesn't matter if you are male or female, you won't be able to put this book down.
You really should read them from the beginning. They will make a whole lot more sense.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND SERIES!

Más de lo mismo que los libros anteriores. A su favor tiene que se lee muy bien, el lenguaje es accesible y el ritmo narrativo ligero y fácil de seguir. También tiene bastante acción y unos diálogos entretenidos.
¿Sus peros? Pues que es una obra a la que le falta bastante profundidad y su trama principal tiene bastantes agujeros, pero me está ayudando a mejorar mi inglés, así que a mi me valen.

Re-listened February 2020 - Just like in the previous books the second time around I find myself getting more and more annoyed with Richter. It is a good thing that I still love all the other characters and world building. Richter does stupid thing after stupid thing in this book. Here's just a small sample

Still a pretty good read. Like with the last book, I thought that Richter was recklessly taking on too many enemies. There is a difference between finding yourself in a situation where the odds are poor and having to fight to survive, and placing yourself in a situation where the odds are poor. In the last 2 books, I felt he was making foolish decisions that put himself and his party in jeopardy. The last book had Richter being more of a solo adventurer but this book dealt more with a war party. It seemed likely leveling up was more important to him than his own life and the life of his party. Overall, still enjoyable. I just hope it does not get too crazy from now on.

For being called the Catacombs, surprisingly little of this book deals with the catacombs. Not much in the way of story progression really happens here at all and comes off like the middle portion of a much longer book. In fact, the way he set up the start and end of the book, it seems he could easily combine books 3, 4 and 5 into a single novel.
In many ways, The Land, as a series, is very cathartic to gamer mentalities. The stakes aren't really that high, but it's just so satisfying to get a rare item, or level up, or upgrade your village. This series is really one giant gamer power fantasy and a chance for Kong to live out his ultimate D&D / RTS fantasy. It skirts the edge of marry-sue.
Please, either stop with the pop-culture stuff or make it more subtle -_-. There's a bit in the middle of the story where it feels like he's fighting Robin Williams' Genie from the Disney Aladdin.

We are starting to get into the series now.
Plot: After surviving the assassins Richter starts to explore more of his lands, learning more of the history of the Mist Village and finding the demons that reside under his feet.
Characters. We focus more on Richter in this book and I would have liked to know more about the other characters. That being said we start to feel that the Village itself is starting to become more of a character as we learn more about its bloody history.
We also seem to be building up to some big boss in later books.

I'm enjoying the progression of the book. just as in game play there are so many avenues to follow the different threads are starting to get overwhelming to keep track of.
however the humor and characters make me want to continue. and those cliff hangers at the end of each book!!!

Another spellbinding read. (pun intended). I love this series, and while listening on Audible I enjoy immensely the performance of Nick Podehl. His range of voices and characters is outstanding. Can't wait for the next one to come out.

Loved the book. Aleron has created a fantastic series with high magic, adventure, danger, and comedy. Since finding the series I have re-read it multiple times and I have to say it is one of my favorite fantasy series of all time.

Another great book in the Land. So glad that some of the other people were involved in stuff this time, rather than Richter being on his own the whole time. I like it when there's more around, especially Sion, though I adore Alma too!! Love this series so much, trying to take it slow so I don't catch up! 6th audiobook is due out this month, Nick Podehl is AWESOME!!

re-Read: Entertaining, but a bit all over the place.
The author has a problem when not writing witty dialog. It comes off as dry and stiff at times. And our hero just luck's into everything that he needs. Still, the fights are pretty good and the humor great. I have some problems with this series, but also see why it's so popular. Though, man, everyone not the main character really feels like an npc at times and not a real character.

When I got to the part about Roswan asking for more bacon and eggs "Please and thank you" it finally clicked. This taciturn builder with a large mustache is Ron Swanson! Increased my enjoyment of this series even more and now I'm wondering what other references I've been missing!

I read too fast
It's either that or the writing is so enthralling that I just can't put the book down. I'm always excited to see what happens next and I'm never disappointed. Great work on a great story. Can't wait to see what's next!!
