So many books, so many wonderful authors, how can we choose who to read next? This fabulous paranormal authors have gotten together and given readers a collection of short stories that are like those appetizers before the main course, absolutely delicious and leaves your palette ready for more, more, MORE!

Author Rebecca Hamilton has gathered together some master chefs of the paranormal world who share some new short stories, some tried and true shorts and I have to say, I have found a couple new authors to covet, some favorites to indulge in and look forward to stuffing myself on calorie-free reading heaven!

From shifters to vampires and beyond, follow a daring rescue in a race against time, check out the first day on the job for a new reaper, the last day on the job for an experienced reaper, the power of the Ouija Board and so much more!

Guaranteed great reading, some dark, some not so dark, but each has the distinct flavor of the authors who wrote them! When in doubt, try this sampler plate! NOT JUST VOODOO is a must try, one bite at a time!

Not Just Voodoo by Rebecca Hamilton and other authors have a collection of awesome fantasy stories that are sure to please the fantasy fans out there. I have read only one book better than this in years. Although they were all were awesome I always pick out my favs to share. 'I Wish I Weren’t A Djinni' and 'Wicked Witch' were my two favorites. Those are the two stories that stuck in my head when I finished the book. All were good, either a 4-5 star stories.

It was great to read short stories from new authors, many carried these stories over into full length novels. Really there is something for everyone in this set. I've read all the stories, and loved all of them. You really can't go wrong if you enjoy sci-fi, paranormal, and fantasy.

Lucy's (L.C. Hibbett) Wicked Witch is enough by itself to warrant getting this anthology!

Finding the party of school friends in a graveyard gets a lot easier when its you who picked it out. Being born a witch does however help when a click of your fingers can subdue the burly security guard interceding your plan. How the thirty prep school juniors around a bonfire wasn't what alerted the guard is a surprise. The purple and green colouring of the flames told it was a magical fire burning, it and the many empty bottles of booze lying around still should've been something that had come to someone's attention first. The two-thousand dollar dress that barely kept her step-sister's ass covered ought to signify well enough the sort of revelers there. Not that its any real call to fame it was Destiny who'd invented Graveyard Fridays, and even with everything going on she couldn't miss what was essentially her own party. A number of things would happen this night, lending truth to the shadows shrouding out the light. They would be revealed as triggered by a little plastic dipstick in a confused girl's pocket, a passing glance between guilty parties, and a human boy with eyes of a clear blue sky.

Different types of witches can commandeer certain types of behaviour, such as Reds, Blues, Golds and Silvers to name but a few. A Silver, for example, might enrapture the mind and lust into a fervor, but when all is said and done you can only do so much if you want them thinking they can get into your pants. The wrath of a Black Witch, however, is something everyone in their vacinity feels, especially if its destruction they seek. She's the first that's been born in centuries. Destiny had something important to share with the boy currently holding her attention, his ongoing avoidance that started that morning was now something that had everyone backing off. They knew the temperature drop had nothing to do with the weather, and certainly not when gathered around a bonfire the temperature continues to drop. Destiny held in her hand concealed in her pocket, the important reason for the absent discussion. He'd stood her up that morning before school and his avoidance now that she wanted to know where he was didn't bode well for why their conversation was important. Her mind dealt with the truth and the sense in what she'd done and needed to do, but her body still screamed for his attention despite her climbing ire.

The calls of the kids around them should also be enough to clue anyone into the warnings of her magic: “Raise the dead, raise the dead, raise the dead.” Being a servant of the Family was a foregone conclusion for the daughter of an immortal god and a high witch. The Family has special usages for talents like hers, as the name suggests, being born a Black Witch meant you're almost always a Wicked Witch. Although not the intended topic the plastic wrapped stick burning a hole in her pocket had intended, the thing that came out of her mouth still wanted to be true; she and Mark could fight their way clear of the Family to live freely. Her own father had been the one to first tell her that ninety-percent of Black Witches were born bad. The little voice in her head that said Destiny could choose to be good, that she could refuse to be a Wicked Witch, thoroughly went against any expectations of her. She knew deep down that if she truly pushed to be free like her mother had before her, she'd soon be a witch listed on the Vanished List too; not that anyone believed their absence had anything to do with vanishing. The List was only made known as a means of keeping witches from forming plans where they could live their life the way they wanted to.

Its in the moments between when a little fun turns to something deadly, and whether we choose to do the same things we always do or try to do something new, that fate provides the impetus of change or confirmation, based on our own particular destiny. The memory of sage words coming to Destiny, "Any place can be an end. Or a beginning.", seem to decide the road her life will lead her upon, now that she actually has a goal. People resigned to allowing fate to steer them in the same direction as always, of making the same mistakes over and over again, choose to do the same things repeatedly for no other reason than its the way its always been done. Those that want their destiny to be something new, to have an influence over how it travels, choose to do the right thing or simply something new. Under such circumstances its possible to redefine our lives for the better. Of course the impetus can be for change that's worse too, when we choose to do the wrong thing despite having always done the right ones; but in such cases I suspect its no longer fate or destiny that's been the shaper of change, its the darker sides of human nature that fuels those changes. Perhaps Destiny's 'Vanished' mother knew something about her daughter's future when she chose her namesake, because it seems she's come to realise the former of the aforementioned two.

Not all stories have to be long to be enjoyed, although had you asked me a while ago if it was possible to get satisfaction from short stories, I'd have said yes but rarely at best. Happily I stand corrected with regard to this short story which is entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable. A tantalising preview of things to come, a window into the history that might later shape the way the story leads. If the point of prequels is to provide a contextual window into the how, and the why of things that are, then this little number does both. This teaser also leaves a reader with expectations and anticipation of where Wicked Witch will go, and the sorts of characters it'll have to do it with. Even if you have no plans on whether you'll followup and read the series, Lucy's little teaser herein is still something you should read. It has its own set of characteristics that do not inherently require any further efforts to grasp the purposes of writing it. Prequel or not it is still a great little flash fiction. Definitely five stars in my book: the only thing I'd call for is that I'll get to read more, and since this is specifically a prequel, I'll get to do exactly that - so full marks are in order.

Magically enticing!

I loved every single story within this box set! They were simply magical... It was great to read short stories from new authors, many of whom carried these stories over into full length novels you can pick up from Amazon or any other e-book retailer. I'm so excited to add these books to my ever growing "to read" section. Believe me...they will be read and reviewed. I'm amazed by the talent in this box set. Rebecca Hamilton never ceases to amaze me with her keen eye for authors such as these. Very well done! I highly recommend taking the time to read each story. It's worth every enjoyable minute! A must-read, 5 stars!

Not Just Voodoo is a ‘box set’ of quite a few different stories ranging in age and heft. It has a little something forever paranormal fantasy lover out there and feels pretty cohesive as a group.

Major Arcana by Margo Bond Collins – This is probably one of my favorites in this set and it’s definitely a strong lead in. I liked the characters enough to want to continue their story and enjoyed the writing style enough to add several of her books to my wishlist.

I Wish I Weren’t A Djinni by Erin Hayes – This goes with Erin Hayes shorter series that features titles like ‘How to Be a Mermaid’ and ‘I Do Believe in Fairies’, which I haven’t gotten around to reading but I do own. This is short and sweet. Teeth-achingly sweet, but I enjoyed it’s lighter feel (especially after the first book).

Splintered Magic by Aileen Harkwood – This has a case of ‘ridiculous adult’ syndrome that some YA novels are prone too. All of those who can be considered old enough to function independently are jerks or make terrible choices, it’s irritating that the only rational adults are those mentioned second hand. However, the magic system does seem really interesting and though the story itself didn’t feel new I did enjoy it overall.

Wicked Witch by L.C. Hibbit – This one has a really cool premise and I love the idea of highly influential and well of people being magical, I also like that the group of teens we follow are not necessarily good people either. But this one just didn’t grab me much and at times it felt too Gossip Girl in terms of loftiness.

Journal of Abigail DiAngelo by Megan J. Parker & Nathan Squiers – I wasn’t a fan of this one. The tone was almost too nonchalant and bored to match the subject matter towards the beginning, though the latter portion really does hold some promise.

The Witch and The Thief by Katerina Martinez – This one is an adult paranormal read that really pulled me in. It’s a shorter story that moves rather quickly, but it really does a good job of building that creepy tension that I expect from New Orleans-based UF.

The Awakened by K.N. Lee – This might be one of the more unique stories in the set as it is historical and has a more prim writing style. I don’t think I was blown away by this one, but it was enjoyable and it would be interesting to see how Willa handles her power.

Gavin’s Gamble by Nicole Zoltack – I really liked this one! It’s one of the stars of this set I think. We get a different view on witch hunters, a more personal view and I really liked that Gavin wasn’t blindly accepting of his father’s brand of world saving. I’m keeping my eye on this other for sure.

Deadtown by Debbie Cassidy – Another fantastic read! This one is more adult in age terms and we follow a duo who tackles problems of the paranormal variety. There is a lot happening this one and it really sets up nicely for the beginning of the series that follows and has a really interesting set of characters.

Visions Among Frost by Alicia Rhodes – This one has some promise as well, though it does have a rather style that lends itself towards ambiguity. I have the first book in this series so I’ll be giving this author another go sometime soon and I’m curious to see how Crystal gets started on this road.

The Dying of the Light by Monica Corwan – This leans more towards mystery/crime beat fiction but has a really interesting paranormal twist in the form of reapers. There is some seriously awesome stuff happening in this story and I’m glad to have this author on my radar now.

Tested by Magic by Jasmine Walt – Another really good story for this set and another author for me to add to my list. We get a new fantasy world as well as more modern setting with shifters and magic users, as well as some bounty hunting goodness to round it all out. The writing is fantastic and the characters really balance each other out.

Reaper’s Redemption by Thea Atkinson – I’m torn on this one. I wasn’t really fond of the overall story, but I did like the idea of it as well as the twist. There was just something off about this one that I can’t quite put my finger on.

Leaves Like Magic by Rebecca Hamilton – This is one of the longer stories in the set but it falls somewhere in the middle for me. The magic is really awesome and I like the idea of a sort of political battle with vampires and witches…but it just didn’t really feel much different from other paranormal stories out there. I don’t really think I knew the character enough to care about her power or her selflessness, it was sort of Mary Sue-esque and it lost some of its unique quality because of that.

Overall I think this is a great set of short stories! Some of the stories were in the middle, a few were hard passes, but quite a few were stories I’d be interested in continuing at some point. I love getting to try out new authors and sets like these really provide a great way to do it at a low cost.

I'm going to intentionally keep this short. I don't want to review each story, but I did keep track of what I'd rate each of them, which I'll list later. As a whole, I liked this collection, hence the 3 stars. While I really liked some of the stories (4 stars), there were quite a few that I simply liked (3 stars) or thought of as just okay (2 stars). I admit that I didn't find this to be the strongest anthology, and even though it took me a million years to read, I didn't have a bad time reading this one. Actually one of the things I enjoyed most was just trying out new-to-me authors. I do think this collection would be more accurately named as a "sampler" because most of the stories were prequels. Overall, while this might not have been an all-time favorite for me, I am glad to be walking away with some new authors that I want to check out!

"Major Arcana" by Margo Bond Collins - 4 stars
"I Wish I Weren't a Djinni" by Erin Hayes - 3 stars
"Splintered Magic" by Aileen Harkwood - 4 stars

This is a collection of young adult stories by multiple authors. These are all long short stories (Maybe novellas, is there a difference?). All of the stories are paranormal stories with witches, vampires or some other supernatural type of being and usually have a romantic element as well.

Some nice features with this collection is that all of the stories are given and age rating so it is easy to decide if the story would be appropraite for younger readers. Also, each story has author information and descriptions of some of there other works. There are links provided to follow the author or to get to other writings but some of the links have already expired.

The best thing about collections like this is that you get to try several authors with little commitment on the reader's part. With the aditional information at the end of each story, it is quite easy to be able to jump into other works by authors that catch our eye. Since the authors all write in similar styles and genre, you have a better than average chance of finding multiple new authors to start reading.

Not just Voodoo Review

Good collection of different types of paranormal/fantasy short stories.
They are all short quick reads but a few really caught my interest. A few others were almost to short to gather an opinion on them either way.
This kind of book was a great for a way to learn about new authors and series I hadn't heard of before and there was more than one I plan on looking into further. In my opinion it's worth a read.

Read my full review at http://blackwords-whitepages1977.blog...

There are two reasons that I wanted to read this Anthology...One, I love YA Paranormal and you just can't beat a good YA Anthology. And two, it's free and who doesn't like free?....

As I do for every Anthology that I read, I break down my thoughts on each story and then I write an overall review at the end.

Margo Bond Collins - Major Arcana
This was an interesting and unique story. I want to read more from this author.

Erin Hayes - I Wish I Weren’t A Djinni
What an magnificent tale! I loved it and am anxious to read more from this author.

Aileen Harkwood - Splintered Magic
An interesting and intriguing story with a shocking twist. I loved it.

L.C. Hibbett - Wicked Witch
Another great story, though I hope there is more to come.

Megan J. Parker & Nathan Squiers - Journal of Abigail DiAngelo
I have been following this dynamic duo for quite a few years now and their ways of storytelling always amazes me and this story is no different. I really loved this story and the magical words that fell from its pages. I am so ready to read how this character fits into the Gods & Monsters.

Katerina Martinez - The Witch and the Thief
This story was really short and left me asking a lot of questions in my head. I really hope there is more to this story and I will be keeping my eye out for this author.

K.N. Lee - Awakened
This story was also short, but direct and to the point. It has left me yearning to read more.

Nicole Zoltack - Gavin’s Gamble
An interesting story that I hope will have more to it.

Debbie Cassidy - Deadtown
This story was unique, yet confusing at first and a bit creepy, but I loved it.

Alicia Rades - Visions Among Frost
I have fallen in love with the Crystal Frost series and this one is by far my favorite one yet. The author brought forth a fantastic story-line that kept me entertained.

Monica Corwin - The Dying of the Light
What an amazing story. I absolutely loved it.

Jasmine Walt - Tested by Magic
What an awesome story and one of my favorites. I loved it.

Thea Atkinson - Reaper’s Redemption
A very sweet, yet short story, but I still loved it.

Rebecca Hamilton - Leaves Like Magic
This was a fascinating story with a bit of humor added to the end. I believe this author has won me over with her style of writing and I am anxious to read more from this author.

Overall review.
This book of was remarkable. Each Author had a unique and genius way of bringing to life their stories. These stories was edge of your seat worthy and I highly recommend them to all YA and YA at heart readers.

Rebecca Hamilton is a wonderful author. I loved her book, Leaves Like Magic, she showed me the true meaning of friendship, loyalty and love. So far I’ve only read this book in the boxed set and plan to read the rest soon. Her characters Hadley and Finn are complex and Hadley’s feelings for her situation she’s put in just shows me how creative Rebecca Hamilton thought about her characters in order to bring them to life. Leaves Like Magic is full of suspense, intrigue and a few twists that keep you guessing how it’s going to end.

Hadley will to do anything for her best friend, Iris; even trusting a stranger with their lives.

Finn is willing to help Hadley at any cost, and the bond between these two young people is amazing.

In my opinion, Leaves Like Magic is beautifully written and the story is about loyalty and love and the willingness to put trust in another person in order to come together and overcome what they have experienced in their lives.

I loved Leaves Like Magic and couldn’t put it down!
