Awakened by someone prowling around outside his house in the middle of a windy night in Escondido Canyon of the West Texas frontier, Tom Schurtz prepares for the worst and receives a surprise. The surprise provides an explanation for the strange occurrences that continue around his home. Has the supernatural invaded Tom’s world?
If the supernatural has not, the Donahues certainly have. And their influence bears watching. And watching might not be enough.
The fall roundup draws all into the ranch-land harvest. Will they finish in time to get their beeves to Charles Goodnight at the JA ranch to join the fall cattle drive to Dodge City, when the frosts assure that no beeves will carry splenic fever. Before all that there’s an encounter with Ike, a cryptic conversation with Henry Edwards, and the introduction of Bill Donahue to the job of flanking beeves, which is not universally appreciated.
Elizabeth witnesses a secret invasion of Tom’s home and has reason to keep it to herself. Tom himself thereafter comes upon another apparent invader of his home, or does he? And what is to be made of the message left for him?
