Anger ate away at his soul. Years ago, his brother joined the People’s Liberation Army and he’d joined the Navy. Then, at a battle in Siberia, the Russians had killed his brother; he hadn’t been able to protect him. They have land and resources aplenty, but the Russians always wanted more. They’d stolen China’s birthright as the leading power on Earth. For Lieutenant Tao Yu, now it’s time to get even.

Something is afoot at the Hainan Island Naval Base, China’s nuclear ballistic submarine facility. Dark and mysterious events are stirring.

Somebody needs to enter the Dragon’s lair to investigate. Who will take on the mission? Tom Hilton, a Royal Marine, and Irina Petrenko, a Soviet naval officer. They’d pose as naval officers assisting the People’s Liberation Army Navy with undersea warfare.

Their journey leads them to deceit, torture, and pursuit through the deadly snowy forests of Siberia, until they reach some of the deepest waters on Earth.

The KGB and British and Russian Special Forces are drawn in when they learn what Tom and Irina have uncovered. At stake is a nightmare for nuclear war.

Tom and Irina are back, and in life’s cruel game of chance they need to throw a six. Will they or the Dragon prevail? Follow them now, into Deception Abyss.

Stephen Makk is the author of 20 books, including the bestselling USS Stonewall Jackson Series and The Tom Hilton Series. He mainly writes thrillers about technology and the military, with hints of romance. His protagonists are male and female, playing the imperfect hands they’re dealt.

How to write like a Makk… Take the mind of a fish, any fish (he’s an experienced diver). Add an engineer, simmer for years. Sprinkle on liberal helpings of strategist, astronomer, historian and anthropologist. Bring to the boil and let loose. You need some Makk on your bookshelf!

Good yarn planning. Never action Stations for instance. Always

RN..action Stations only used in surface vessels. Attack teams closer up in boats. Down bubble, never. Degrees down or up. eg. 15 down on foreplanes. Never enter a boat from the Fin. Gore hatch or act hatch to engineering spaces. This would very much add to the knowledgeable readers enjoyment. Whilst both navies are similar they are divided by traditions. The most irritating being ]telegraph orders. All ahead Flank. Never been interferon an TH boat slow ahead, half ahead act though normally the orders would e given in revolutions. Apoloogies it this seems nitpicking.

Didn't like it

After a fantastic start, the 2nd and 3rd books have become R rated soap operas. The plot is forced and unbelievable. No spy/agent would not suspect video and audio surveillance especially in govt issued quarters.

Not for me

I prefer reading stories that are realistic, this one is so far from being believable that I could not really get interested.

GRAMMAR &TYPOs

The rating should be higher but there were just too many typos and grammar mistakes. They were very distracting. Good plot, good storyline
