Jason became a certified Salsex instructor after a bad break-up drove him to compete with his gym-obsessed ex-boyfriend. He didn’t realize that learning how to dance and exercise at the same time would change his life. Years have gone by since his break-up and Salsex has become a regular part of who he is. Things are okay for Jason, though he doesn’t have anyone special in his life. After his last long-term relationship exploded so spectacularly, he has resigned himself to the foregone conclusion that he won’t ever find another long-term boyfriend. He’s slowly settling into the idea that he’ll be single forever when Taylor walks into his life.
Taylor’s career in football hit a roadblock when the bones in his arms were shattered after an accident. Now that Taylor is recovering, he needs to do some cardio so that he’s in tip top shape when he goes back to playing football. Taylor’s aspirations are more academic than athletic, however, but it doesn’t matter, He needs his sports scholarship to continue his degree.
When Taylor walks into Jason’s Salsex class, all he expects is an interesting and fun way to do the cardio part of his exercise routine. What he gets is Jason, a gorgeous Salsex instructor who makes him question everything that he thought he knew about himself. At first, Taylor thinks that he may have just found a friend, but when Jason calls him after a personal crisis, Taylor realizes that everything has changed for him. That, added to a roommate that may or may not be sabotaging his potential relationship with Jason – if it can even be called that – and his celebrity status in a small city are enough to further to complicate things.
When Jason’s ex-boyfriend shows up to his apartment, Jason needs to confront a lot of issues that he thought he had left behind years ago, when all he wants to focus on is the gorgeous man that keeps going to his Salsex class.
Can they overcome life’s obstacles to come together or will it all be too much for them?

"Boyfriend Material" was a sweet story of Taylor, an injured college football player needing to up his cardio and Jason, a gay hair stylist and Salsex instructor. Taylor immediately finds himself attracted to Jason, even though Taylor is straight, so he finds this a bit confusing. Jason thinks that Taylor is incredibly adorable, but is surely straight and not interested in him. The last thing he wants is to get involved with a straight guy who is confused about his sexuality.
One day Jason doesn't show up to class and Taylor becomes increasingly worried when no one can see to get in touch with him and this is not Jason's usual MO when he's not going to be in class. Taylor manages to get Jason's phone number and eventually reaches him, only to find out that Jason really needs someone's help to get the courage to walk into his own home. I won't go into details on why this was, but the whole situation was pretty messed up and I felt bad for Jason since he had to deal with someone else's screwup.
The two grow close during that day, even share a hot kiss, but again, Jason doesn't want to get involved with a guy who is too embarrassed to be seen in public with him, so he pushes Taylor away.
Taylor isn't sure if he's really attracted to Jason or if he's just jealous of Jason. Thanks to Taylor's roommate, he thinks he's just jealous. Honestly, the whole uncertainty, back-and-forth and inner conversations involving Taylor were just annoying. It was like reading the inner thoughts of a teenager and that was really the only part of the book that I didn't like. It wouldn't have been so bad if it were just a small part of the book, but Taylor was a bumbling mess for way too much of the book for my liking and it made him seem immature. I understand he was struggling with his feelings, but he talked in circles an awful lot and didn't want to get to the point.
I liked Jason. He was confident and knew what he wanted. Even though he was a bit harsh with Taylor in the beginning, I couldn't blame him. He had been through a lot years ago and that had toughed him. It was obvious though in the end that Jason thought that Taylor was just adorable and he was lucky to have him.
I thought that things progressed a little too quickly for the couple, but was happy to see them get their HEA, and with the support of Taylor's family and friends.
Disclaimer: I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Jason is a hairstylist and Salsex (Latin dance?) instructor for a class at the gym. He became an instructor after breaking up with his ex and found it helped him cope and put his energy into something more productive. He’s content at the direction his life has taken.
Taylor is a popular university football player. A few months after suffering an arm injury that has taken him off the football field he’s seeking a good cardio class to go to. He picks Salsex and arrives to class a few minutes after the class ends. He ends up speaking to Jason unaware the guy is the instructor. The two seem to have a moment. Taylor is straight and he becomes confused by his own attraction to Jason and can’t help but want to be around Jason.
As far as stories from Jerry Cole goes, his stories are either up or down for me. This one didn’t do either:.
1) Both Jason and Taylor are a bit obtuse, something they pick up on about each other and actually use to break the ice. This actually causes a bit drama between the two since they get butt hurt by the others intention. I would think knowing this about each other would help them to communicate better instead of doing the opposite but it really didn’t.
2) Jason’s ex, Blaine (the douche bag), made an idle threat and his threat that Jason would regret it came to nothing. I expected something more to happen since Blaine did pay a visit to Jason and Taylor resulting in a confrontation. No such thing happened and it left me expecting something that never came about.
3) Elliot’s bad advice to Taylor. It sounded so off and I’m not sure how Taylor didn’t know he was being led around. There was quite a bit of misdirection and things said to confuse. It served very well to confuse Taylor and it was just sad that he didn’t pick up it all until after he decided how he would pursue Jason.
4) Taylor and Jason banter and flirting and just all around dialogue when together felt like a mess for half the book. It was just hard to read their conversations together at times, they didn’t seem like they were on the same page sometimes.
5) It was nice that when the time came no one had any issue with Taylor and his sexuality. I really liked the accepting atmosphere.
6) Safe sex wasn't present. I don't think there was enough prep before the intimate bit either. It was a bit wince worthy.
An ARC was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.
I thought that the characters in this book were a little bit unbelievable, but still interesting and fun to read about. Taylor is a star football player in the local college (though it's not clear exactly what position he plays) who has recently been injured during a game. As a part of his recovery, he joins a Salsex class at a local gym to get cardio in and not be bored. Jason is the teacher of that Salsex class and they have an instant connection which Taylor doesn't quite understand since he's always assumed that he's straight before this.
The way that these two meet was fun, and ideosyncratic. Their shared experiences later in the book were definitely unique and emotional. I liked reading about how neither Jason nor Taylor knew how to be in a relationship, but they both wanted to try their best to make this work.
My biggest gripe with Taylor & Jason's relationship was that Taylor was much too apologetic. I felt that he was constantly sending mixed signals to Taylor and assuming that he had somehow done something wrong by treating Jason as a friend. Jason repeatedly told Taylor that his needless fretting was cute, but I found it to be irritating. I wanted Jason to sit Taylor down and tell him that dating meant time spent together, with someone that you are romantically interested in, getting to know one another and spending time doing things that you both like - the gender of your date doesn't matter - but that never happened.
By far, my favorite character in the book was actually Taylor's roommate Elliot. Elliot was also on the football team, and had fallen in love with Taylor, but figured that it would always be an unrequited love. To watch Taylor fall in love with a man who wasn't himself was heartbreaking for Elliot and he didn't handle it as well as he could, or should, have. I hope that Elliot will get his own book and be able to find happiness too.
"Boyfriend Material" is a MM romance by Jerry Cole.
Jason is a Salsex instructor. He loves teaching his students, but apart from that his life is pretty ordinary. That is, until Taylor comes to his class. Taylor is a football player, who is currently recovering from accident. They become fast friends, but soon Taylor discovers that he has feelings for Jason, he never had before, especially not towards another man.
I loved Jason and Taylor's story. The plot was believable and well paced. Alternating POV was a great way to connect to the characters. I adored both men. Taylor was such a sweetheart, even when he was confused he was always trying to do a good thing. Jason was a little bit insecure, but lovable all the same. Honestly, this book is SO good! Super engaging and there was never a dull moment.
I enjoyed this little diversion. I thought Jason was a pretty perfect boyfriend and he definitely wasn’t some doormat that he let Taylor get away with using. I am giving it three stars because the editing issue with the names. There were many many many times that the names were mixed up like the author decided to switch who was who after he’d already written the book. It was super annoying, but I still liked the book as a whole. Also, it could have used an epilogue so here’s my version of one: Jason and Taylor’s wedding day. Taylor has graduated from a masters program and gotten his dream job and Jason is now running his own exercise dance studio. They’re happy as can be and they say I do. The end.
1.5 stars (1 star I save for authors who can’t spell AND have a bad story). Even as this story had a very serious element, it still managed to become silly. And totally unbelievable. Didn’t engage me at all. He saved a drummer from being trampled by the marching band and was considered a hero by Jason? Really?? And they kept calling themselves idiots like every few pages? Well, they were portrayed as idiots, so I guess the author got that one thing right…
Kind of a tough read character wise for me but all in all a very entertaining and intense read. There is an aspect to the story that hits the reader like a thunder bolt and puts a spin on the story that drives the reader to finish the book just to see where the characters end up.
sadly not Jerry Cole's best work. So many errors that one part didn't even make sense. I hate writing bad reviews and usually I just won't review, but I feel this one needed to be known so maybe Mr. Cole will take notice and want to fix it. I know it is a lot of work writing books so I never like to bash books. The story was pretty good. I liked the characters too.
Jerry wrote an adorable character named Taylor. Taylor is a straight man who never noticed other men until he met Jason. He might think another man is handsome, but never had sexual attractions to any of them. Jason turns his life upside down, inside out, making the poor guy second guess his sexuality. Taylor can’t deny that there is something about Jason that attracts him and heck if he can figure it out.
It’s kind of cute the way Taylor approaches Jason, his innocents I could feel and how his sudden self-consciousness gets in way. Taylor believes he’s saying all the wrong things to Jason and finds himself messing up when he talks with Jason. Jason is probably more attracted to Taylor because he knows what he wants. But his past experience has proven it’s not wise to have a relationship with a straight man turning suddenly gay. Way too many complications and they always end up breaking your heart.
Then there’s the problem with an ex-boyfriend who one night shows up on his doorstep – they broke up a couple years ago and Jason had heard nothing from him – thank goodness, because the guy really plays head trips with Jason. Jason was nervous with him there because he brought up their past and how much he has changed and of course underneath all that garbage was he wanted Jason back. Jason gives in and allows him to spend the night. Jason locked his door, but in the morning when he came into the living room was a mess and his ex tried to commit suicide.
It’s after the attempt suicide that the two main characters go through. Most straight to gay stories have that awkwardness to the characters and both make mistakes in communication or whatnot, trying not to offend the other person. This is what Jason and Taylor went through, well actually Taylor.
I loved Taylor, and also Jason, but Taylor touched my heart with his natural kindness and caring. He wasn’t a fake person by doing things just for the show of it. The questions going on in Taylor’s head could be quite comical and made the story foAs I said in the beginning I loved the book. There are not many of Jerry Cole’s books I haven’t enjoyed immensely. I will mention that reading the ARC copy, it had grammar and the wrong usage of words in many places, but I have been told these were taken care of. I still gave it my five star review, so please enjoy reading another wonderful story by Jerry Cole. ***I read a complimentary Advanced Reader Copy of this book & am voluntarily leaving an honest and unbiased review.***
The book blurb does a much better job of describing this book than I ever could........ ************************************************************ As one would expect , this was another great story by Jerry Cole. One of my favorite themes that I enjoy to read: straight to gay romance. Jerry delivers an awesome read in Boyfriend Material. We have Jason, an out and proud, hair stylist and exercise instructor, and Taylor, seemingly straight, atypical jock, well liked by his teammates. Taylor did not like the spot light as a football player; rather content with his role as a student. Unfortunately, he broke his arm , after the cast removed: he had to obtain some type of exercise to build up his arm before the coach would allow him back on the team. His schooling is determined by playing football. He decides to enroll in Salsex, a cardio/music/exercise class. However, he missed the class and met the instructor: Jason. Both are attracted but Taylor is confused because all his life the thought himself straight but he was so focused on Jason. I not going to go say anymore but this is a sweet entertaining read. I thoroughly enjoy Jerry's writing: his sentence structure, his word usage and his imagination. This book would satisfy anyone wanting a good read with either HEA or HFN; depending on how then end affects you. Me, I am in the HFN feeling, Another great read by Jerry Cole.
After the end of Jason's relationship, he decides to become a Salsex instructor. He enjoys the energy and satisfaction of teaching his class. Taylor is an up and coming football star but a recent injury has sidetracked. He needs to find a way to get in some cardio without injuring his arm so he joins a class at the nearby gym. What he didn't expect was to walk into the gym and find the one, he wasn't even looking but there he was. Now Taylor will do what it takes to make the relationship work.

This is the first book I have read by Jerry Cole. It was a sweet, well written story that only missed the full 5 stars due to some minor editing issues. His work has a nice flow making it an easy and enjoyable read. I will be looking for some of his other books.
The two lovers have very interesting individual lives, so I rated this is a 4 star book because that aspect could have been more explored. Also there is a need for a proofread to take care of some minor errors in grammar. Finally, there were times when it was confusing to tell which of the lovers was talking. But high marks for great erotic writing, though not using a condom was a little out of the norm for a modern story. And finally the two lovers were very lovable.
It was nice to have a couple who didn't have to jump thru hoops to be together. Yes, there are bumps and bruises and things that happen along the way, but no major drama or espionage or stupidity that makes you want to yank a B* balder than the prez under his roadkill toupee. Now, there are definitely times and places to enjoy all of those things. But there is also something to be said for the quieter romances. The lack of stereotyping was also REALLY frakkin nice! This is an enjoyable book of two men who meet at a salsex class. Jason is a salsex instructor and is undeniably gay. Taylor joins the class to keep himself in shape to play football while his is recovering from a broken arm. Taylor is straight...or least he thinks so, but the feelings he has when he sees the instructor shaking his "booty" while instructing his class leaves him questioning this. Asking his roommate for help with this new revelation, he gets misguided help as his roommate is in love with him and doesn't want the new relationship to happen. The road to happiness for these two is a road full of pot holes and takes a lot of effort on their parts and exploring of Taylor's sexuality. The story is full of angst, jealousy, treachery, closeted gay, coming out, dancing, exploring of ones sexuality, lust, friendship, hot gay sex, straight to gay sexuality, love and a good HEA. I would recommend this story to anyone to read. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC book.
I must admit that when I first started to read this story, I was like what is this? Then I read past a few pages and met Jason and Taylor. These two men were great characters. They both give a lot to the story. They have both gone through hard things before the start of the story. Jason broke his arm and Taylor had a bad break up with Blaine. But they meet in an exercise class that is led by Taylor. Jason is made shy by him. Jason is a straight football player so the feelings that Taylor gives to him is so new. I won't say more but I think that Jerry has a gem in this straight to gay first-time story. I voluntarily received an advanced copy of this book and have given my honest thoughts.
I really liked this book because it was easy to identify emotionally with the main characters, Jason and Taylor. They grew into a relationship. Of course some drama occurred with Jason's ex-boyfriend, but everything worked out before the end.
I was given a complimentary advance reader copy of this book in exchange for my hones opinion about it.
Another winner from Jerry Jason is an instructor in Salsex and is attracted to Taylor a football player who joins in his class after having broken his arm. Taylor is straight but feels a connection to Jason which is very confusing. We follow their story as they work their way through their differences towards their happy ever after. I received a complimentary ARC and this is my voluntary review.
What is boyfriend material? Take a teacher and a student (cliche right) and ponder the dynamics. Will the teacher be able to allow someone else to teach or always be in control? Okay, will the student be open to learning even though the teacher takes you to the moon and back with an explanation? Explore the dynamics between Jason and Taylor and enjoy the highs and lows of teacher-student relations. Very insightful and makes you ponder, have I always been this .......
