Whitney was amazed she finally had a boyfriend, and was prepared for a new life with him in the siren night human world. And the fact he was a lead singer in a rock band in his free time wasn’t bad, either. Too bad having a boyfriend didn’t mean she was going to see him, as his father’s punishment included separating them. Whitney is certain she can handle it, but sure enough, that isn’t the only wrench thrown into her new life. There’s a new threat in town, a scarier one than the backstabbing siren clan she’s part of now. They are night human hunters, and Whitney is an outlawed night human breed. Could her luck get any better? Quiet and peaceful would be ideal, but that’s not what she’s about to get.
Originally from Wisconsin, B. Kristin currently resides in Ohio with her husband, three small children, and three cats. When not doing the mom thing of chasing kids, baking cookies, and playing outside, she is using her PhD in biology as a scientist. In her free time she is currently hard at work on multiple novels. Every day is a new writing adventure. She is a fan of all YA/NA fantasy and science fiction.
I received a free review copy of this book. The cover's really nice! The first chapter did a good job of (re)introducing what came before, but overdoes it a bit; it's not necessary to keep mentioning what just happened without adding anything. I expected this to be a typical romance, light on reasonable thinking from all involved participants, but was pleasantly surprised when nobody did anything obviously stupid without a very good reason! For most of the book I was confused on the use of "siren" vs. "mer" - they're usually used interchangeably, but in some passages there's a distinction drawn between the two words as though they meant different things. Toward the end, it's explained that sirens are essentially a race of mer. High schoolers are really too young to be choosing lifelong mates, and anyone older than a high schooler should know that. However, I'm not going to object too strenuously, since there's only kissing in this book, nothing inappropriate or too adult. I do wonder why Whitney doesn't keep in touch with her old friends. Do they not have cell phones or internet, like she obviously does? I liked that she craved "human normal," but she wasn't a normal human for very long, was she? Wasn't it just that she was craving familiar things, or in other words, homesick? I liked the mystery elements - when the answer to "who can you trust?" is "nobody," it makes the investigation that much harder! The twist of the hunters asking for her help was interesting. It certainly beats the forced misunderstanding in a typically romance novel. I liked that the leads actually communicate, rather than letting resentments and jealousy fester!
***I voluntarily reviewed this book and will provide a review.***
I love this spinoff series with Whitney. I was kind of ambivalent of Whitney as Cassie's best friend in her series but she's really come out as a great character in this series. The sirens seem like terrifying night humans but thankfully for Sam...and now Whitney, they give me hope and hope for great things.
An interesting twist of this story was definitely Jade and Jax and their mom. I loved all three characters and cannot wait to have them come back and be apart of the series again. I also loved learning further into Whitney powers, it got really exciting when she started to excel. LOVE Whitney and Sam together and I can't wait for more cuteness!
Great second book in the series, I'm diving into book 3 shortly so I can't wait to continue.
I love this series! I didn't get quite as into Songs and Fins as I did the first book, but I think it was just because SO much happened in a short amount of time. Whitney and Sam have to figure out how to survive apart during his punishment set by the king, and Whitney's friends are also forced away from her at school, so she gets to know Jade and Jax, siblings who are new to the school. They have to figure out who's killing innocent day humans while keeping their identities secret from her new friends. I didn't feel like Whitney grew much throughout this book, but the timeframe was very short and I'm really excited to see how she harnesses her siren power in the next book after the subtle hints in Songs and Fins! BKM can do no wrong!
This one was just really short. Not enough to really get to know the new characters, plot a war, and do a battle. Everything felt really rushed and in a story like this, it needed to be a bit longer. Another 30 to 50 pages would have added so much to the story and to the depth of the characters. What I do know, I love Jade and Jax. And I really hope that eventually they both find out the truth and come around. Whitney is a freaking bad ass! She was born to be a Siren and I think she'll be their queen. She is so strong and amazing!! Im not surprised at what Amber and Tim planned. I'm not surprised that they are traitors. I just hope they die, but I don't trust the Siren King at all to do what's right. Sam is the only good one
I was fortunate enough to receive an ecopy in exchange for my honest review.
The sequel picks up where book one left off. I love the new characters that are introduced. Especially Jax. I wish this book was a little longer. When I like a book I don't want it to end. Mermaids are my favorite creature so I love reading about them. It seems just when they think everything is fine a new problem presents itself. Loved learning about Sam and Whitney's bond and more about the Mer and different ones.
I'm one step closer to the end and while I don't want it to end the Merworld is to complicated for my liking I prefer my wives Ari and Cassie with main man Dev( Sidhes are just as complicated). Now back to the main world Tim you dumb thing. Why you so greedy! and the rest of the mer are just to damn complacent and also I don't get the whole war thingy like why though?
2.5 stars. There wasn't much of the relationship between Sam and Whitney. Sam's dad is determined to keep them apart. The school year for Whitney is awful her new friends abandon her (not by choice), hunters come into town, and Sam's dad is keeping them apart. The book was okay I just wish there would have been more of Sam and Whitney it was like their relationship was non existent.
The world created in the mind of B. Kristin McMichael is a fascinating one. Her books are clean and free of gutter language. The plot and characters are fun and I'm left happy there is another one coming.
First off. ...if you haven't read any of this authors previous Night Human series, you may want to check them out first to get acquainted with the world building. If you've already read the other books and book 1 of this awesome series then buckle up! We see Whitney grow into her siren abilities. ...true to form Sams evil brother Tim causes trouble. ...how to keep Whitney safe when Sam himself is ordered to remain underwater by his overbearing dad. Whitney is left alone on shire as her friends have been ordered to act as servants to her archnemesis Amber. Curious siblings show up to the school and befriend Whitney in her time of need. There's something unique about them. ...she just doesn't know what it is. All kinds of supernatural mayhem occurs. ...who will come out on top? Will Sam and Whitney's love reign supreme? Will the King realize what a jerk he's being? ....(don't hold your breathe) ...I can't wait to see what happens next! I'm LOVING this surprise faction in the Night walker realm. Looks like within the siren faction there's still a huge amount for us to discover along with Whitney. Personally I'm also hoping we may see her BFFs from the previous Night walker/Daywalker books show up in the future. She and Prince Sam are quickly becoming a force for good and a force to be reckoned with. ...keep an eye on Jade/Jax. ..I think we may be seeing them in future books < grin >. After all, one can never have enough friends or allies. Long live Prince Sam and Whitney! !
