A Sipping Good Yarn...

I am not one of those readers who slavers to know what is trending in any part of my life. I don't usually separate my genres much beyond the general labels like Mystery, SF, Fantasy, Romance, Nonfiction, and so forth. I DO read reviews, and will generally check out titles recommended to me by people whose opinions I trust. I also check out cover art and regularly read the blurbs from the backs of the books. What I want is a book that will grab me by the nose and drag me in, regardless of the genre. I want characters who will engage me, and make me look up suddenly to realize that hours have passed without realizing it. I am happy to report that I have found this kind of read in Blood and Holy Water.

Fin is a vampire who works as a trauma doctor in the ER of the hospital in Nampa, Idaho. Ava is a Fourth Order Angel trying yet again to earn her wings (for the 13th time). Not sure how or why, Ava is sure that Fin is involved directly with her miracle. Ava follows Fin all over while he's working in the hospital, and inexplicably, she finds herself being drawn to the solitary vampire. The only problem is that according to what both have been told, Fin shouldn't be able to notice or interact in any way with Ava, but he does.

In the middle of the puzzle of how the two could possibly talk with or even touch one another, potential angels are being found dead, drained of every drop of blood before the Angels of Death or Acquisitions can find and collect them. At the same time, vampires are turning up dead instead of dissolving into ashes, with no apparent physical damage to them. Fin, never wanting to be around his own kind, gets called in by the head of the local vampire Blood Board, a call he can't ignore for more than one reason. Ava is sure that the dead angels and Fin are interconnected somehow, and refusing to abandon her miracle despite Fin's objections, can the two work together long enough to find the solution to this dilemma without crossing either of the two opposing factions?

This is particularly well written, fast paced, and can be considered a good thriller, mystery, and action piece, as well as a paranormal romance. The action never flagged, and there were twists and turns enough to keep the reader eagerly turning the pages to see what would happen next. I noted the time when I started reading, and when I next surfaced, I was impressed to discover that several hours had passed, lost in the book, without my being aware if it.The characters are memorable, and I can easily see making them good friends who I will visit again and again when I need an enjoyable read.

I do have a couple of notes here, though. There is some language in the book that not all readers night be comfortable with, It is not excessively used, nor put in indiscriminately for the purpose of being disturbing. Be aware that at no time in the story does Ava ever use it. If you're uncomfortable with any amount of profanity, no matter how small, you might want to pass. You will definitely miss a good story, but not every story is for everyone. The same thing might be true if you're concerned about your teen reading it, but I recommend that you read it first, before you dismiss it. Only you know the maturity level of your own offspring, and that is a call that only you can make (who knows, you might even find a new author to read!). On an extremely positive note, there are absolutely no sexual or adult scenes in the story, and the scenes that could be considered gory are organic and help to move the story forward without being overly detailed or thrown in for the shock value.

The book is text-to-speech enabled, which is very useful for the times when you just can't look down or see to read. If you've never used it before, the pages automatically scroll to keep up with the reading voice, and so you can pick up where you stop the reader without losing your place. The speed of the voice can be adjusted to a reading speed that you're comfortable with. I have been around, and worked with, the blind and visually impaired for a number of years. I have personally used programs like the Daisy Reader, as well as using books and other materials recorded on tape and CD by human readers. The artificial reader voice, especially on the latest generation of the Kindle devices, is considerably better, than even the screen reader in Windows 10. The only drawback is that if you're not used to listening to the onscreen reader, it could be offputting because it might be too artificial in sound. I would urge you to have an open mind and give the reader a chance. It's nice to get the audio option without having to buy the Audiobook version from Audible.

All in all, I highly recommend this book, and I am happy to call it what it is: a sipping good tale!

Well, this was different. Picture a vampire, Fin, who is also a doctor in a hospital. And picture an angel who thinks he holds the clue to find the miracle she needs to win her wings and the next level for her kind. But Fin has no time her frivolous silliness. He’s too busy avoiding his own kind to care what a naïve angel wants. But when the other vampires uncover his deepest secret, threatening what he cherishes most, nothing can help him...except a miracle. Too bad he chased the angel away.

What do you get when you mix an angel trying to earn her wings and a grumpy emergency room doctor who happens to be a vampire? A fantastic read! Ava has been trying to earn her wings for a hundred years. She's looking for a miracle that will promote her into paradise. No one else has ever taken this long and she's beginning to believe she's the worst angel ever.
Vampires and angels can't exist together but Fin can sense any angel. This one is different than the angel of death he generally senses. Ava breaks one of the many angel rules by showing herself to Fin but it's far from the last rule she will break. They need to work together to solve the mystery of the murders of potential angels and Fin learns that vampires are also being killed. I loved this story, it felt fresh and new. Highly recommended.

Joynell Schultz brings us her newest work, a supernatural romance as good as anything J.D. Robb has given the genre. A complex cast of characters get to work in “Blood and Holy Water,” setting up a circular set of circumstances pitting one group against another against another. Her vampires don’t sparkle. Her angels don’t wear halos. The rules are complicated. Friends don’t always have each other’s best interests at heart. The drama and the mystery keep the story moving and, as the action gets grittier, the romantic tension gets tauter. The story will make your heart pound, so keep some garlic handy; the vampire whose attention you draw may not be benevolent.

Blood & Holy Water: Angels of Sojourn, Book One - I couldn't put this book down without a fight. Another well written, well thought out story concerning an unusual vampire (I like what was done with this character) and a wingless angel. Enemies with the same goal, but different results gained, work together to solve the deaths of potential angels and murdered vampires, and the ties between the two groups. The characters are realistic and both have morals and ethics. The angel goes a little gray, but there's so much involved in her decisions in trying to help the humans and potential angels. There's intrigue and suspense, and the book moves at a fast pace. There's sexual tension, but no sex - thank goodness this author treats angels as angels not sex starved humans without morals - and very infrequent vulgar language. 5*

Broken & Burnt (Wings & Wonder: Angels & Magic Book 3):
Joynell Schultz - I had to read all the Angels of Sojourn books that I had. Although there are three other contributors to this boxed set, I didn't have the time to read them (all new authors to me - my apologies to them). Ms. Schultz just has a way about her: her writing style; her realistic characters; her understated sexual tension between characters; and her infrequent use of vulgar language. This is a well written story complete with a well though out plot and believable dialog that moves at a fast pace. I appreciate that while the angels once were human, they don't behave as humans; sex, vulgar language and all the other stupidity. Her angels behave as angels, even the "tainted" or fallen angels are good, they're just in a gray area. Their mistakes were actually to help someone in need or pain. There is plenty of suspense and intrigue in this short story. 5*

Magical Connections - A collection of novellas, short and spin-off stories. They were well edited with interesting characters and suspense and intrigue, and touches of romance. Even the stories that were part of a series, could be read without knowing any other book from that series. There are no cliffhangers or continuations to another book for the rest of the story, while I certainly enjoyed. I'm looking forward to reading more of Ms. Schultz. 4*

Fangs & Fairy Dust - I enjoy Ms. Schultz's stories, which I discovered in Hexes and Ohs, and was happy to find this collection. This is a well written and believable novella introducing the Angels of Sojourn series, of which Blood & Holy Water is the first book. The main characters, a male vampire and a female human and her mother, are interesting and believable, along with action and dialog. It is fast paced and contains vivid descriptions making everything easy to visualize. Fortunately, it is not a cliffhanger. 4*

The Mail-Order Bride - I read this little story in Hexes and Ohs, my first by her. It's a new twist on a witch's tale, which makes for a cute and intriguing romance. Entertaining and enjoyable. 4*

Hidden - A lovely, heartwarming novella about discovery, love and kindness, and loneliness. Searching for her baby's father leads a pregnant fairy to new adventures and learning experiences, and a vast change to her life, while she shares her godmother skills without her magic. There's plenty of humor and danger included in this sweet story. 5*

The Enchanted Apothecary - A sweet, romantic, little story where while grieving for her mother, she has suspicions of a male customer and his use of dark magic, and how she confronts him. There's a good balance of suspense, intrigue and romance. The ending brings a big smile when the truth is told. This story is similar to the romantic stories of the superhero wives world. 4*

One Possible Future - I read this short in the Angels & Magic: Bonus Collection. An interesting, well written, quickly read story between a psychic and a fallen angel and the possible futures awaiting them. The next story is available in the Wings & Wonder boxed set. 4*

Bitten - A sad but heartwarming short story of a mother's love for her small son bitten by a werewolf. The lengths she went to keep him safe. This is a spinoff from the Angels of Sojourn Series. 4*
Magical Connections end.

Dr. Fin O’Brian hadn’t fed in days. He walked down the emergency room corridor with a syringe of blood, but he had to lose his invisible stalker, an angel who had been following him for a month. He entered the physician’s lounge and had to wait until another doctor left. But then he felt the angel’s presence again and thought it had come for his soul. He demanded a face-to-face conversation and, to his surprise, a young female without wings appeared! She was stunned he could both sense her and see her! Ava has been trying to earn her wings for over 100 years and somehow believes Fin has some part to play with the miracle she needs to do this. Wing would mean she could visit Earth at her discretion and work directly with humans. Fin, however, wants her to leave him alone so he can do his job and help his patients coming through the ER. He was so different from what Ava knew of other vampires. He didn’t drink from humans, could be in the sun, could interact with angels, and cared for humans. So peculiar.

To prove herself to Fin, whose skill, kindness, and empathy had greatly impressed her, Ava sought out his dying patient. Ava could do something about her intense pain despite morphine, but she’d need to step out of Sojourn and into the human world to become physical. Then she took Gwen’s pain into herself.

As Fin was ready to leave, a female vampire came into the hospital! He raced out another door, wondering why she was there and wondering if it had anything to do with the angel. When he saw Ava again, she denied knowing about the vampire and helped him search for her with no luck.

When Ava went to ask Simon, her advisor who assigns her miracles, some questions about Fin, she overheard him say to someone that two potential angels were found dead before they could cross over. At the same time Fin, looking again at a letter he received, is being called by the Chair of the Blood Board to help with a vampire issue -- vampires are turning up dead instead of disintegrating into ash. Fin, who always avoided his own kind, cannot ignore the summons. Ava has a feeling that the dead angels have something to do with Fin based on the tingling she feels. She won’t walk away from him, still sure he is her miracle, even though he tries to get her away from danger. Can they figure out how to work together to solve the two mysteries? And what will happen to them then?

I really loved this book. The story line never lags at all, moving at a perfect pace and pulling the reader in. Both main characters are so different from the stereotypes and can’t figure each other out. But can they work together to solve this serious situation that affects both angels and vampires? Put yourself into this mystery and follow along to see where this book leads!

Let me date myself a little bit here to start -
I came of age right alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar's Buffy Summers kicking ass and saving the world as a vampire hunter, all while the love of her life was one of the creatures she was destined to destroy.

If my bringing this up in relation to this book doesn't have your attention, I'm not sure what else to do.
Why do I bring it up? Because despite the fact that Ava is an angel instead of a slayer, I see a lot of parallels between these two stories - in a good way, despite the fact that Ava would never destroy anyone.
Both have a duty to fulfill that usually involves the end of vampires
Both are able to look past their rules when they find a vampire worthy of helping instead of destroying
Both have a destiny that directly involves the vampire they decide to save
Both, technically, fail at their assignments for their involvement with their vampires, disobeying direct orders from their superiors, annnnnd yet, they both save the day for those exact reasons
And, let's be frank here, both of these vampires are hot as hell, soulful, and trying to atone for what they've done in the past. Fin and Angel? They'd be friends. Sure Angel has a couple of centuries on Fin, but how often does one find a kindred good vampire?

I'll be honest, I was a little concerned when I saw the angel involvement, worried it would turn into some religious story instead of a kick-ass paranormal romance. However, I am very happy to report those concerns never came to pass. The angels in this book are real - they have emotions they aren't supposed to, they break the rules, and they don't know everything. They're essentially a better, more powerful form of us humans. Or, at least they try to be a better version.

The very beginning was just a touch slow for me, but that also could have been my apprehension about the possible religious factor. It didn't take long for me to adore Fin, picturing him trying to hide his syringe of blood from the beautiful angel that wouldn't leave him alone. And Ava? At times it was a little difficult to connect with her thinking, but she died over 100 years ago at the age of 18, there's a lot she would not have gotten to experience, and I can completely relate to her desire to make up for lost time.

Both of these characters grow so much thanks to the other it's impossible to not love them. Ryker and Simon both have potential as well, each also getting their own stories down the line as the series continues.

I give this book 4.5 stars, but am willing to round up for the whole star option on the site's ratings.

Very Unique World For This Angel And Her Vampire

So, first of all, this is a new author for me, so first time reader! I have a passion for all things Angel and Demon, but most specifically, the mixing of the two and the blurring of the lines. Mrs. Schultz did a fantastic job with this, and I am very pleased I took the time to give her a go.

The world building is interesting and not quite the 'norm' when it comes to angels and vampires. It's not staggering, just different enough to keep it from getting monotonous. I am actually looking forward to future books in hopes of getting to understand more of this world. There were quite a few questions left unanswered by the end of the book. Rest assured, there is a happy ending and I don't believe reading further is necessary to enjoy the book on it's own standing.

Finn is our vampire doctor (he doesn't tend vampires, he doctor's humans, cool huh?) and father to a human woman who we get glimpses of throughout the book as they interact. He is very broody, but I can't blame him. He's got a good heart and he really is a good person. I'm heart broken for him but simultaneously proud of his will and determination to do right by his daughter. As Ava breaks down his walls, we really get to see that he has a personality beyond that and it's quite endearing.

Ava, our angel working on her wings, is a sweet, absolutely adorable character. She too has a strong will, but she's so fluffy cute you'd be hard pressed to see it. I kind of like that she's a rule breaker. Her long stint as fourth level angel (wingless) has made her almost desperate to get her miracle to get her wings, but at the same time, it has shown her how her 'humanity' has slowly been being drained away. We get to see her own transformation through the book and it is quite heartening.

Overall, it was a wonderful romance with action, angst, suspense, and two star crossed lovers finding their way. I suggest it. I will be reading more by this author, specifically the novella's in this series and future novels.

To those who care about such things: this book is pretty much sparkly clean. No sex at all. Some snuggling though. :D

Ava is a fourth order angel who is trying to get her wings by being part of a miracle which she believes requires a vampire ER doctor name Fin. She angel-stalks him, and he can see her, which he isn't supposed to be able to do. He doesn't believe he is worthy of a miracle. He murdered his wife twenty years ago and has been repenting by trying to save human lives as a doctor; he has even distanced himself from other vampires. But Ava believes that the miracle that will get her her wings involves him. She slowly starts to break down his walls, and they get to know each other. Then strange things begin to happen with murdered angels and murdered vampires.

Will Ava get her miracle and her wings? What sort of miracle might Fin need? What is happening with the murders of angels and vampires?

What a fast-paced, immersive read! Ava is such a sweetheart and a little naïve, but she has good intentions. FIn is complex with his challenging past and his desire to do good now; he cannot appreciate his own kindness and compassion. I enjoyed what went on in this story between Ava and Fin as well as within the greater paranormal community of vampires and the angels. I love the romantic aspect of this as well, as Ava and Fin would seem at the surface to be such different entities that they couldn't have such an attachment. The love story aspect of this is sweet, with just a little cuddling but no explicit sex.

If you enjoy stories about angels and vampires with a romantic twist, you might enjoy this book.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

This is a slow build romance, which is nice as Ava and Fin get to their HEA. Ava is an angel without wings. She has been trying to get her miracle that would give her wings and promote her to the next level but she always seems to fall short. Fin is a vampire living in the human world as a doctor. Every day he fights a battle with his vampire side by not drinking directly from a human and sticking to only what he can draw from them medically.

Ava is a bit naïve but as she gets to know Fin more and starts questioning her angel directives she realizes there is a lot more at stake than just her miracle to move her up the ladder.

Fin has a secret that he would kill to protect and Ava’s questions put him in a vulnerable position. Will he be able to help her get her wings and have her move on before he loses his heart to her and possibly someone he loves more than life.

There is an almost old fashioned feel to how these two interact in the beginning. I like that we get both sides of the story, which for me is always a better read. Ava starts off innocent in many ways and starts understanding there is more at work than first assumed. Fin thinks that he has gone unnoticed by the other vampires and is in for a rather rude awakening.

There are a few murky areas that could have been fleshed out a bit, such as more info on the other vampires.

The pacing in the beginning was good, towards the middle started lagging but it did start picking up in towards the end. Both characters made you care for and about them plus the story had enough meat to keep your interest.

Fun read

I enjoyed this story. It has angels and vampires and, for the most part, they are pretty typical and what you'd expect but the story is still pretty different. I liked both of the main characters: Fin and Ava. A vampire and angel, respectively, though they are both unusual for their race (?) and I enjoyed slowly uncovering the mystery as to why they are both different.

The biggest problem I had with this book was that overall the content was clean. The romance is sweet and not at all steamy, which I appreciated. The violence is minimal, though there are murders that occur and one suicide, but this is definitely not a gory book by any means. HOWEVER, Fin occasionally drops the F bomb throughout the book. And it just seems so out of place to me, with the overall clean feel of the book. Granted, I prefer to not have curse words in books, but I think even if I was totally fine with profanity it would still feel out of place. It's not that it's necessarily out of character for Fin to curse, per se, but he doesn't really say ANY other curse words in the entire book (maybe 1 or 2? compared to maybe around 10 for the F word) and that seems weird to me. I guess I expect if someone says the F word as often as Fun seems to, I would expect more profanity, that's all. So it was just weird. And I would have preferred for that just to not be on the book at all.

I was given an arc of Blood and Holy Water in exchange for an honest review.

Blood & Holy Water was about an angel and a vampire who fell in love and had to solve a murder mystery based around the deaths of potential angels.

Fin and Ava both faced struggles - Fin with his vampirism, and Ava with the order and rules of the angels. They were very real, for mythological struggles, and I could relate.

Fin’s love for his daughter was sweet, and I really liked her.

Simon was very meh for me. I wish we could have had a flashback scene about his and Ava’s friendship, as constantly having her tell us about it and not being shown got a little tiring.

Some twists and turns were a bit predictable, and it dragged a bit in the middle, but the story was very enjoyable overall.

I liked the ending. It was something that I didn’t see coming, unlike some of the things related to Fin.

I hope the sequel will be about Lily.

4.5 stars.

I know now when picking up a book by Joynell Schultz that I will find a super sweet love story without being too cheesy. Although it is often love at first sight but the characters turn it over in their heads before they totally fall for it. There will also be a supernatural element but with a new twist or idea. And I will love it.
Here we have Ava, an angel fed up with trying to get her wings. And Fin, a vampire who has himself under control and stands out against other vampires. And a few humans who know of both sides and try to intervene for the greater good by killing humans, angels and vampires alike.

You can read this book as stand alone and after book 2 (like I did) without problems.
I'd like to know how Ava and Fin carry on after the book has finished, so I hope there will be more indepth books about those characters introduced in book 2 and the spin offs, maybe all comes together.

Uncaged Review: A very well paced start to a series. Ava is a Fourth Order Angel, she’s been trying to perform the right miracle to earn her wings for over 100 years. When she feels the pull of a miracle with a vampire named Fin, she is surprised to find out that not only can Fin see her and touch her, he’s not the typical monster vampire. He works as an emergency doctor at a hospital, and successfully keeps his monster at bay. But when angels start dying, the suspense heats up.

This is a nicely written story, with two strong characters in Ava and Fin, and a different type of paranormal when pairing vampires and angels. The suspense is well done, and keeps you guessing on what will happen to both Fin and Ava, for breaking every single angel rule trying to get to the truth. I’m looking forward to the second book in the series. Reviewed by Cyrene

When I read the story's short. I was interested. The cover only made me want to read more. That alone made me feel like there could be a gem hiding here.
After reading the entire thing, I smiled. It's interesting and a bittersweet.

When the story started to unfold I felt, I wanted to know more. The search for answers is truly well formed. However I lacked a true feeling of fear. Every feeling is well described, only the fear left me a bit hungry, it felt a too flat to me.

However, I was truly enticed trough the story and hope to read more from this writer soon. I am sure this is a gem and there are more in the making.

I love the Angels of Sojourn series. Schultz has a very different take on angels and vampires. Her angels do not reside on clouds plucking harps - they are specifically chosen to watch over humans. They also have the same foibles as humans: free will, choice and the desire to keep questioning even when it is not a good idea (according to your superior). Falling as an angel does not mean automatically becoming a demon. Vampires are enemies of angels. What happens when a not-so-vampiric vampire and a not-so-quiet angel fall in love?

Finn a vampire, living life as humanly as possible. His a sweetie, aong with being a caring doctor and loving dad.

Ava is an angel waiting to gain her wings, she's a fun and strong willed character.

I liked how Finn and Ava's relationship developed through the book, it wasn't rushed and happened as the story went along.

The story kept me interested and near the end of the book I needed to turn pages quicker to see what was going to happen!

This was my first read from this author and it was enjoyable, I liked the paranormal world she created and will read more in this series.

This was one of the most original stories I've ever heard... I mean, vampires and angels? Totally got me from the 1st page.
Love the fact that it had POV from Fin, Ava and Riley. First time Riley's POV came into view I was like "who's this one?" And it was brilliant to see all the dynamic on this book.
I'm not a fan of narrator but this was was so well written that I completely forgot about that.
It warmed my heart seeing them falling in love through all the odds and sacrificing everything for the other.
Loved the story pace, so very well constructed and the plot so original I can't give anything else than 5 stars. 🤍

This was an enjoyable read. It was fast paced and exciting. The characters were very strong with their individual back stories and twists. The world of angels and vampires was created with great detail, the rules were made clear. Every riddle was answered and though this was part of a series it made it as a stand alone book no cliff hanger. There are many places the rest of the series could go as far as detail in back stories and side characters those books may be exciting to read. This one was fulfilling and the perfect length.

Well done

Ava is an Angel trying to find her miracle that will get her wings. Fin is a doctor and a vampire who doesn't drink blood from humans. He can stay out in the daytime and who raised a human daughter. But he thinks he is a monster for something he did 22 years ago. Ava has a superior named Simon, who insists she stay away from the vampire.

This story reminds us that sometimes it's necessary to break the rules of it will save a person. That love conquers all and friendships are priceless. I enjoyed the story and the adventure it provided.

Blood & Holy Water is the first book of Angels of Sojourn series and it is a must read. This is one of those reads where you easily get pulled in. Ava and Fin are both strong characters and that made for a well balanced couple. The attraction between the two simmered along nicely. The storyline was engaging and kept my interest as well as the mystery, drama, twists, mistakes and emotional turmoil created tension for the couple. I can not wait to read more books from this author.

A doctor who had a sad past. An angel who offers maybe a hope for the future.

Echoes of darkness from an immortal past haunt him in his present and threaten any sort of a future.

With luck, love, strong fighting and stubbornness skills, and maybe a bit of divine intervention, maybe hope and love still have a chance.

Ava is an angel working to earn her wings. She is having a difficult time trying to accomplish this. Fin is a Vampire ER Doc, who she shows herself to. There are killings of potential angels & vampires that they work to solve. This is an original story that I thoroughly enjoyed. This is an awesome read that I recommend for those who need a new supernatural story. I Loved It!

If you’re looking for a good, quick read, this book is for you. Generally good world building and well plotted. This is my first book from this author and as you know, sometimes that works out and other times it doesn’t. I was pleasantly surprised as Kindle Unlimited selections are hit or miss.
However, it was good enough I plan on reading the second in the series to see where it goes. I’ll keep you posted.

Exciting Forbidden Romance!!👍🌟💘
(Read using Kindle Unlimited)
Blood & Holy Water (Angels of Sojourn #1)

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I liked both Ava & Fin individually & together.😍💘 They manage to forge such an unexpected friendship, it was cute, but it works so well for them.🙏 I enjoyed the pace and the whole storyline, Angels & Vampire's. I wasn't a huge fan of Simon but he redeemed himself in the end.👍 I'd recommend it.🌟

A different kind of supernatural story.

This story, was amazing! A well thought out, supernatural story, with a twist. Fin and Ava, have such a beautiful relationship, vampire and 👼. An odd duo, that worked out perfectly! I will read more by this author, as this was my first book by her.

Wow.....this takes paranormal romance to a whole new level. It has you gripped on just the prologue before you even start the very first chapter. It just sucks you in until you realise that you have devoured the entire book. An absolutely first rate book and I cannot wait to devour every single piece of work from this author.

Blood & Holy Water sucked me in from the very first line! This is not your typical vampire-meets-angel-angel-tries-to-save-vampire story. Nope. This is a story about profound loss, sacrifice, redemption, and above all — love.
As funny as it is sad, as violent as it is heartfelt, Joynell Schultz's novel is a must read for all urban fantasy lovers!
