What I really like about Charolette-Boyette Compo's books is she ALWAYS writes steamy chemistry between her hero and heroine. They are not perfect. They are flawed and usually have some skeleton in the closet that isn't the most honorable thing, but they work through it and find a way to make it work. It's not always neat and clean, there are usually some major bumps in the road, but in the end love conquers all. This book was no exception. Lannie is on the run from her abusive ex-husband. A hard working author, she is traveling to her hometown in Georgia when her car breaks down in a small town in IOWA. She is immediately helped by strangers who go out of their way to make her feel welcome, safe and secure she feels herself relax for the first time in ages. When she is offered a car to drive while hers is being fixed, she eagery accepts and starts exploring the neighboring town. As soon as she see the white run-down Victorian farmhouse she is smitten with it. Compelled to take a closer look, she notices an old cemetary almost directly next door. As she looks over the tombstones, a flicker of gold catches her eye. Deciding to investigate, she comes across a gold chain with a medallion hanging from the tree branch with the initials RDB engraved on the back of it. She decides to keep the medallion as a good luck charm. Noticing that the house is for sale, she contacts a local real-estate agent and immediate is shown the house. As soon as she steps her foot in the yard she knows she has found home. When she is warned that the house is haunted, she shrugs it off, knowing she is safe there regardless. When she dreams of a handsome cajun-speaking man making love to her that night she feels loved and safe. She feels like she has known him forever and they are soul-mates. She even knows his name...Remy. I won't go any further with this because I don't want to spoil it for y'all, but I really loved this book. Remy is such a strong, complex hero that is a victim of his circumstances. But, he is definately all that AND a bag of chips...sigh...some girls have all the luck...lol I liked that you know that Remy and Lannie are going to have to work hard at keeping their happily ever after...but you also know that somehow they will be sucessful. If you are offended by hot sex and dirty words, this book is not for you.
I was born in Grinnell, Poweshiek County, Iowa and raised in Kellogg, Jasper County, Iowa where GHOST WIND takes place. I left the area many years ago when I was 18 but I go back for short visits fairly often. I have been aware of Charlotte Boyett-Compo for at least 15 years but just got around to reading my first book by her. I have to compliment her on her attention to details about the area she was writing about. From her descriptions I could picture in my mind exactly every location that she talked about. Not only were the descriptions detailed, they were very accurate right down to the names of restaurants, streets, and a golf course. It was like looking at a map of central Iowa...... or a trip home without the long drive from Arizona! I read this story strictly because of the setting, thinking the genre really isn't what I would like. Surprise! I enjoyed it very much. I was very impressed with the author's writing skills (besides the above mentioned attention to detail.) The story was well fleshed out and the characters well developed. There was suspense and of course, romance, and the end was satisfying -- not rushed and abrupt as seems to happen too often. I gave 4 stars because this still isn't my favorite genre and I don't think it ever will be but yet I'm looking forward to reading more by Ms. Boyett-Campo.
I really enjoyed this book. It was quite a bit different from other romance novels I have read. It was a bout a woman starting over with her life, away from a severely abusive ex husband. Lannie has car trouble on the highway outside of a small town in Iowa. Cruising through the countryside in her rented car she finds her dream house. Victorian, decrepit looking, etc etc and of course it wouldn't be complete without the resident ghost Remy. Remy and Lannie fall a little too quickly in love and then she buys the house and moves in. Moving on to the final act, her abusive ex locates her after fantasizing his revenge and I'll leave it at that. Be aware that there is a scene towards the end that was extremely graphic, quite disturbing and life like. All in all it was a really good book and I couldn't put it down.
In Ghost Wind, Lanelle Durant is on her way across country, traveling to get away from her abusive ex-husband in California. She’s derailed in the middle of Iowa when her car breaks down. A series of events brings her to the house that was owned by the Deveraux’s where Remy’s ghost resides. She buys the house and Lanelle falls in love with Remy, who cannot physically leave the house...

A true ghost story -- set in rural Iowa and constantly engaging characters both from the contemporary world as well as a very winsome ghost from the past. There is mystery here, murder, love, betrayal, and prejudice. All are brought together in a very creative way and are evidence that the author knows her "stuff." This is one of those stories that is just too good to put down!
