A film tie-in which features Wayne and Garth, two adolescents obsessed by Heavy Metal and Hot Babes. From Aerosmith to Madonna ("heavily babetitious"), they ponder the great issues of the world in a language all their own. The book includes essays, photographs, a crossword puzzle and a glossary.
The depth and class of Wayne's World is sinfully delicious, and the comic writing was genius. Best of all is that I have had this book for ages. It has that wonderful smell from sitting in the garage in a box forever. This smell is nostalgic of the way books smelled in a garage covered in stuff from Jr High. I don't even know how to describe the smell--old and dusty will do. Sniffing this book almost brings a tear to my eye.
It is a shame that such an interesting and historically valuable work such as Wayne's World: Extreme Close-Up is so difficult for modern readers. Many have commented on how difficult this style of comedy is for the younger generation. Consider the following quote taken from the first few sentences of this fantastic read:
"When they called me up and asked me to write a book I said, "no way" and they said, "way" and I said, "no-oo wa-ay" and they said, "way" and I said, "nooooo waaaaaaaay" and they said, "way" and then I got call waiting and asked them to hang on a second."
This book has everything a person would want in a novel. it has a foreward, 'how to' stuff, recipes, essays, detailed instructions on how to Schwing, top ten lists, a crossword puzzle and an excellent conversation with the band Areosmith on the collapse of communism.
This book is a must-read if you have 20 minutes and really nothing else to do while you are just sitting there and it happens to be within arm's reach. Might also be as well if someone tosses it to you.
Wayne's World is responsible for a huge part of my sense of humor. I saw the first movie in the theater for my birthday (thanks, Mom!), and received this book later on. I read it between 3 and 4 dozen times in the first year of ownership.
I admit my rating is a little bogus--I did a little dance when I saw an ad for the DVD box set of the movies--but for those children of the early 90's: I think you know what I'm talking about. It's excellent.
Found this treasure at a secondhand bookstore and was downright giddy! If you love the films, you’ll love it. Just straight nonsense with the sprinkle of profound wisdom thrown in for good measure.
So glad I now know how to properly perform a “Schwing” move.
(I do wish the publisher hadn’t been so heavy handed with the black ink. Some of the photos are too dark to decipher. 😢)
